It's not the kind of thing you're eager to talk about.

Announcements / Re: Fundraising for the American Cancer Society

For those folks who have already donated, thank you very much.  This is one big frickin' dragon, and it'll take every bit of help we can get to bring it down.

For those who haven't, hey, consider it.  Cancer is serious business, and we're all scarily likely to meet it someday.  What goes around, eh? :)

As we did last year, me and my gang of gaming friends are participating in the Relay for Life fundraiser for the American Cancer Society.  If you're of a mind to help support a good cause, need a tax writeoff, or are just feeling generous, feel free to drop by the link below and throw a few nickels in the kitty!  The donation will applied in the name of our fundraising team, and maybe help us beat out those big corporate teams that outdid us last year. :)

Hey, the map pins show a yellow dot for signing in Des Moines?  Did I miss something??  If he's coming he'd better bring Shannon too!  Apparently all the IA people are too shy to sign up!  Time to brow beat some friends I think!

I don't know what pins you're talking about!  Man, no one tells me anything! :)

Uh.  No one told me about it.

Jim

I was wondering if someone could get me some verification. On the frapper map it says that there will be a book signing in Calgary Alberta, does anyone know if this is true and if so when it will be taking place??

This convention has been canceled.  If I went there by my self, I'd be really, really lonely.  And I'd look a little silly.  My ego couldn't take it.

I've donated several autographed books to a charity event supporting the American Cancer Society.  Some kind of all-night-a-thon.  I think I'm going to be playing D&D all night, rather than walking or jogging or what have you, but at least it's for a good cause. :)

Here is a link to where the books are on sale at Ebay!

Why are you posting in the third person, Jim?
Or did some sneaky person steal your login?  ;)

Let me tell you what kind of person Jim Butcher is.  Jim Butcher has a TV show and stuff now, and is clearly too important to refer to himself in the first person, like everyone else.  Jim Butcher has grown beyond that, baybee.  Jim Butcher is the kind of man who has to distinguish himself that way.

Sure, people might say that Jim Butcher has just become too big for his britches, but Jim Butcher will tell you what Jim Butcher thinks: and as soon as Jim Butcher finds Jim Butcher underneath the new ego growth, and asks him, he will let you know!

Calendar Event Discussion / Re: Jim at New York ComicCon

My eyes saw "Jim" and "Comic-Con," and I started to do a little happy dance, before my eyes registered "New York."

*mope* but... but... San Diego is prettier.  (Yes, I know I'm greedy.  Yes, I know he was here signing 2 years in a row, and I hear rumor that it might be three, but... COMIC-CON!)

it's not fair - last year was my first time going to Comicon in SD and i didn't know about the Dresden Files then!  if Jim is reading this - please come back to sunny California!  San Francisco for example, would love to have you  ;)

I'll be at several places in California in April, doing a signing tour. :)  I'll have to get back to you guys when I know more specifics about the tour. :)

Non-Spoiler Answers / Re: Question~ Dresden Books: On writing
« on: February 17, 2007, 06:38:36 PM »
Q: Now that he sees how the story line opens up and the potential of what would basically be third person POV does Jim regret writing in the first person?

Oh, not just no, but hell no.  I mean, I couldn't even imagine doing that now. :)

Quote
Q: What made him choose first person for Harry?

Debbie Chester, my writing teacher. :)

Remember that I wrote Storm Front in what was basically a bid to show myself how wrong my writing teacher was and how right I was about my work, so I resolved to do everything her way for one book, just to show how awful the results would be.

I had been struggling with third person--especially with being able to make characters who were sympathetic and emotionally viable--and Debbie suggested that I try writing something in first person viewpoint and see if it worked out any better.

It did.  I had a much better instinctive grasp of first person than third person.  My third person writing is STILL not up to the kind of speed I'd like it to be--but I've done a lot less of it, too, and it seems to be improving steadily, if not monumentally.
