I have the mental picture that an airship acts much like a submarine, in a sea of moving air. The lift and trim crystals are like ballast tanks, moving the ship up and down, where it can take advantage of different air currents or aether currents at different altitudes. Without the aetheric webbing to provide propulsion, the ship is carried like a cork on the air currents, and it's streamlined shape means it actually moves a little slower than the air current, unless it extends its sails to provide more surface area and get up to the speed of the air. And with regular sails, it can only move in the direction of the airflow. With the aether silk sails extended, actual thrust is provided, which can move the ship in any direction, including against the flow of the air.
Was there not also mention made of ships with steam engines? Perhaps with propellers like a dirigible, or was that just for running the windlass barges that traveled up and down the spire?

I want to say it's a play on habitat.  That's what I assumed in my reading of my own ARC.

Jim Butcher is remarkably gracious to all of the fans who show up to get stuff signed.

By 3:00 this afternoon, an hour before the 4:00 "An Hour With Jim Butcher" session, the waiting line already stretched around two sides of the square block at the Marriott. I decided it was too hot to wait outside, so I strolled over to the Sheraton and got in line for "An Hour With Colin Baker", the 6th incarnation of Dr. Who. The line was shorter and inside in the A/C, though the crowd got big enough to pretty well fill up the Grand Ballroom. This was Colin Baker's first trip to Dragon*Con, and he did not disappoint, he was vastly entertaining.  In the Dragon*Con news, they announced that they are rebroadcasting the panels on DragonConTV at the event hotels, and will make them available on YouTube as well, for those of us who didn't get to see Jim, or Patrick Stewart, or other popular guests live. I expect there will be a link available in a day or two.

You guys were amazing, by the way. So friendly, so patient. I am always impressed by the caliber of people Jim's writing attracts.

Don't get me wrong.  There are almost always more folks who want stuff signed than cons budget time for.  But I don't think that should create a dividing line of who gets to meet the author.

The Dragon*Con of three years ago was particularly heinous.  There were fans who lined up over an hour in advance that weren't able to get anything signed.  But cons are wising up to the sheer mass of Jim's readers and the fan demand for signing time and making allowances.  Hopefully, that debacle won't happen again.

As one of the fans that got shut out of the signing in 2010, I was happy that they seem to have gotten their act together this year, with not only more signings, but much better crowd control and staff volunteers to keep the crown calm and happy. I was in line for the first signing by 9:30 this morning, it started promptly at 10am, and things moved pretty quickly. It took less than an hour to move through the queues and get signed, say "Hi!", get a photo snapped, and get out.  I did feel kind of sorry for the other authors in the room, who didn't have the huge line of fans waiting to see them, though. 

All part of the service.

I'm not an Expert yet, either, but I'm up to Sharpshooter with a rifle, and qualified as a Marksman with both revolver and semi-auto pistols.
