and the name Mavra comes from a Russian opera about a love affair.

Mavra is also Greek for black.

DF Spoilers / A question about Warden Swords
« on: July 26, 2017, 02:35:29 PM »
We know that Harry has to refresh his enchantments on his gear to keep them active.
We know that Warden Luccio is the only one who can make the swords and is not currently able to create new ones.
Do we know if the enchantments on Warden Swords are permanent or not?
If they are not permanent, does this mean that the currently existing Warden wwords have an expiration date?
Are they personalized enough that the individual wardens can refresh them?  Can Luccio refresh them in her current body?

It would be very interesting if they had an expiration date looming, because you just know that they would start to fail at the very worst time possible.

I still get what I consider "empty" hits (search hits that don't actually have the stuff I'm searching for) but for some reason searches are responding really fast today.

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Spire dimensions and populations
« on: October 21, 2015, 05:27:20 PM »
10,000 ft. tall and 2 miles wide would make it wider than it is tall, which isn't very spire-like.  Unless it is 2 miles wide at the base and progressively narrower as it rises above the ground.

Cinder Spires Spoilers / What does the "Aeronaut's Windlass" refer to?
« on: October 21, 2015, 05:23:00 PM »
So, does the title refer to the Predator?  Even though Grimm was incensed when people tried to imply (or outright state in Rook's case) that it was only fit for the work of a windlass?

Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Ending (mayor spoilers, obviously)
« on: October 20, 2015, 12:27:12 PM »
I am hesitant to call this a future of either the DV or Codex Alera.  The best connection that I can see would be that the Vord show up at some point.
I tend to think that the world of Cinder Spires is a far future Earth, with Spire Albion being located somewhere in England, the Olympians being somewhere in Greece, let's say London and Athens as a guess.  Spire Aurora would be somewhere in the Arctic Circle, maybe.

Now is this the same earth that the DV is in?  At this point, who knows?  Maybe the planet is like it is because of the events in the BAT.  Maybe the side effects of being a magic user have once again changed to causing madness in all who attempt it.  Maybe the first gen power crystals are some of the baddies imprisoned in crystal on DR ;)

I don't know if it will ever be explicitly stated, but that is what makes for the best crazy theories.

Author Craft / Re: Maybe an English degree is a must?

More the latter. I've known a lot of English majors (and English grad students, for that matter) whom I wouldn't trust to write the number 1 on a piece of paper. Education isn't limited to matriculation, y'know.
I know what you mean.  I have a friend who has a Masters in English, and one time she emailed me about how she was being a pre-madonna about some upcoming event.  Wrote her back saying I always thought of her more as a post-madonna.

I say it was Uriel and here is why:

0: Heaven has taken an interest in Harry, allowing him to be a guardian of a Sword.
1: When Harry is about to use LC for the first time in PG, he is interrupted by a phone call from Molly, whose dad works for the home office.  Harry has stated that coincidence seems to work overtime when Heaven is involved, and that is highly coincidental.
2: Father Forthill states that he has a feeling that Harry is being prepared for something.
3: Michael also says something similar to Father Forthill at the end of PG when Harry takes responsibility for Molly.
4: In WK, Harry uses little ball of sunshine against Molly, and when discussing it with Murphy, he quotes LoTR "the burned hand teaches best"
5: In Small Favor, when Harry is in the chapel and meets Jake/Uriel, the copy of The Two Towers has "the burned hand teaches best" underlined,  which I think shows Uriel has been looking in on Harry for a while.  It could also reference Harry's hand being burned by Mavra, and how that trauma has allowed him to grow in his magic and how he approaches it.
6: Uriel says his help has been more subtle than Lucifer's

Sounds like Grave Peril, when Harry confronted the Red Court brother sister vamps.

Finally got my book back.  Here is the part:

Quote from: Grave Peril Ch. 16
I saw Kyle move out of the corner of my eye. I lifted the shield bracelet toward him, transferred my will to it, but in time only to partially deflect the broken chip of concrete that he threw at my head. It slammed against my temple and sent me spinning. I saw Kelly blur toward me, white cape flying, and I lifted the blasting rod toward her, shouting, " Fuego!"Fire slammed out the end of the rod, missing Kelly by at least a foot, but still hot enough to set the hem of her cloak ablaze. The flame slewed in an arch across the ceiling and down the wall as I started falling, cutting through wood and brick and stone like an enormous arc-welder.

Quote from: Grave Peril Ch. 16
...Then there was a roaring sound, and I dimly perceived the west wall of the building collapsing, falling away in great, flaming sections of wood and brick. The blast I had sent spewing at Kelly had sliced through the ceiling, walls, and support beams. It must have weakened the structure of the entire building as it had.Oops.

Lydia is in the van, taken to the building by the tennis twin vampires.  But it was Harry's fault.  Like was said above, flaming shen poop was the one he wasn't responsible for.  Sounds like your friend confused the two.

DF Reference Collection / Re: Questions Specifically for Jim, Part 3
« on: September 29, 2010, 04:07:43 PM »
A question for Jim regarding the Barabbus curse.  How many times can Nic mandate a death with the curse?  Are there any limitations on who can be targeted and how many times a person can be targeted?  Inquiring minds want to know, though mostly just I want to know.

To last poster, sort of...depends what you mean by "dog"

Btw, the only thing that would make this thread more awesome is a cryptic post by Butcher himself.

And a kitten.
I don't understand this fascination with kittens, but adding a monkey in a hat, now that's a thread.
