DFRPG / Re: What would you put in a GM's screen?

The DNS on that has gone stale. Are there any other links to it, or could someone put it up on the web if the license allows?

I really can't see tricking someone in to a debt. You find a gold coin in your bed. You keep it. Ha ha! You owe some fae a big debt!

Seems to me there has to be some form of agreement there, even if somewhat implicit.

I really like the were-form build of this! Very creative.

DFRPG / Re: How many have killed off PCs?

The thing is, concessions can only be taken at the start of a conflict round.  I've seen things go very badly very quickly for a PC, especially if all the bad guys (intelligently) begin to focus fire.

I thought you could concede any time before a dice roll, not just at the start of a round (YS 206)

DFRPG / Tag for Effect and Initiative
« on: March 12, 2011, 07:24:06 PM »
Is there any limitation on when in an exchange I can tag or invoke for effect (compel)?

Suppose I do a maneuver that places the sticky aspect <knocked down> on my opponent.
A few exchanges pass while we talk (social combat) and I stand over him.
Then, on his initiative, he decides to sprint for safety (without trying to remove the aspect).
Can I use the tag right then to invoke / compel the <knocked down> aspect?
This saves me from having to keep spending points to keep invoking it even if the opponent is not trying to act in opposition to the aspect.

In general can anyone invoke any aspect for effect at any time (whether by tag or spending a FP) as long as it makes sense within the fiction?

DFRPG / Re: Automatic Weapons

It is not as though one re-aims between shots of a fully automatic weapon.

I too lean towards treating it as part of the weapon's rating. At the granularity of the simulation, the entire burst is a single attack, which could be concentrated or sprayed, and where most of the bullets miss in either case.

In a single attack, even a single shot weapon might have been discharged multiple times (all part of the same attack within the game mechanics). Perhaps this is part of why there is no attempts to do tracking of ammunition in the rules.

DFRPG / Re: Gun To The Head & Dead To Rights

I think this may be a problem of the level of simulation in this game. One is not playing through each move and shift of position.

I would say that "I sneak up behind him, put a gun to his head, and blow him away" would be the narration around the "taken out" after you invoke all the setup aspects and see that you did in fact waste this poor guy. If you failed to hit or do enough damage, then the narration might be that he heard your foot step at the last moment.

If the victim is actually tied to a chair and completely incapacitated, I would treat this as an extended (and possibly delayed) part of the "taken out" which lead you to have him completely tied up in the first place. The book does not really support it, but it makes sense to me. If the victim is 100% in your power there is no point to rolls.

DFRPG / Re: Spellcasters make the others obsolete?
« on: March 08, 2011, 05:52:50 PM »
I find it interesting that the only full wizard in my campaign has approached me specifically to de-power herself without any suggestion by me that it was needed or required. So far I have not seen issues with any of the spell throwers causing the game to go out of whack or become less fun.

A large part of the game is taking place in situations where any use of heavy artillery (either magic or firearms) is out of place so it turns out not to have that much impact in many cases.

Given that it is only allowed to "pure fae of considerable power" I think this is one of those things that was never really intended to be used by PCs in the normal course of affairs. It is more of a model than a carefully balanced power.

Not to keep beating a dead horse, but I would like to put forward a couple of example scenarios to contrast "taken out" vs "concession", both for general edification as well as to check that I have it right. :)

Lets assume I start this exchange with a 4 box stress track, no stress and no consequences.

BBG is winding up and looks like he will lay a major smack down on me.

I don't think I can proactively concede at this point because I have not taken any consequences, although it looks like I might be able to negotiate a consequence as part of the concession if everyone at the table feels it is reasonable. I would need to do this before the attack is rolled.

Lets say the guy hits me for 8 stress. Now I know that the real boss BBG is still to come so I don't want to go in to that hurt and I don't think this guy is trying to kill me, just put me down. I could choose to be taken out right now and not suffer any consequences at all (at the risk of whatever "taken out" narration the GM chooses to impose).

I could take consequences, stay in the fight, and then clearly have the option to concede in the next exchange if I want since I have taken consequences.

Clearly not a very macho character, but does this capture the RAW?

12
No. Concessions are something that happen before someone is taken out. Concessions are a negotiation between opposing forces. A taken out result is completely dictated by the opposing forces and should be potentially worse then the concession. Even if you hadn't taken any consequences Someone who took you out would be well within their right to say you're dead. If you concede that isn't usually the case.

Here is the relevant section:
Quote
Finally, a character cannot be saved from a
roll that takes him out by offering a concession.
You have to offer the concession before the roll
that takes out your character. Otherwise, it’s
cheating the opponent out of victory.

Could you not flat out make the scope a mortal stunt?

Custom Scope on old Betsy (my M16)
+1 to all gun skill rolls when shooting in a sniper or other scope approriate situation.
Only applies when using Betsy.

Seems about right when compared to "Target-rich environment".

DFRPG / Re: Where does the system break down in terms of power level
« on: February 24, 2011, 12:07:16 AM »
I think that simply spending the fate points for the +2 may be less effective than using them creatively for declarations. That may not do direct damage, but could have far more ability to turn the tide.

Used that way, the impact of a pure mortal might be on par, even if the raw shifts of damage per exchange can not be compared.

Unfortunately I can't think of a good way to compare them without some large ensemble of test cases.

So, how would you structure an effort to do a mass compel?
