DF Spoilers / Re: Choices
« on: April 14, 2025, 01:56:28 PM »
Assuming Jim hasn't changed his mind, he's told us what the big choice was. It's at the end of Grave Peril when Harry goes to save Susan. Our Harry summons a bunch of vengeful ghosts to kill the vampires when he could have absorbed their power and lashed out. The other Harry does the later.

Was that a word of Jim? I missed that then. I knew the choice in GP would make my list and was the most likely. But I didn't know Jim actually confirmed it.

Recently I have been thinking a lot about Mirror Mirror, specifically what choices Harry could change that would have a profound ripple effect to himself and the series. Therefore, I started a reread with that specific question in mind.

Now -- I think that realistically, this change has to happen either before Storm Front OR up to the end of Grave Peril. I don't think it can go any deeper in the series to be effective.

With that said, thus far I have reread SF and FM and here is what I have so far:

Storm Front

- Beginning of book, Harry takes Marcone's offer to sit out the investigation.
- End of book, Harry choses to use the Dark Energy at the Sell's lake house to take out Viktor (This I believe would lead to him also taking out Morgan).
Fool Moon
- Early in the book, Harry choses to work for Marcone.
- Middle of book, Harry takes Chauncey's offer.
- End of book, Harry succumbs and continues to use the Wolf Belt

I will be moving to Grave Peril later and will add. In the meantime, feel free to opine. I believe this may have been a topic years ago, but I wanted to take a new look at it.

DF Spoilers / Re: Does anyone think Harry isn’t the original Merlin?
« on: April 14, 2025, 01:04:32 PM »
I really think Harry… is… Merlin… we will see.

What if Merlin is a Mantle? And no not like the title in the White Council.... though in thinking that, maybe Merlin is a Mantle that was forgotten (on purpose or by accident) but though lore/history the White Councile adopted it a title.

I agree, because I remember, though I cannot remember if it was Harry saying it in one of the books, or WOJ, that Harry says he made up the word as a kid after he got decent at the fire spell, that it wasn't really Latin or Spanish, more of a combo with Harry's own slant.  Reason being Harry wanted the word for that spell to be unique to him so it couldn't be used against him.

It was also said a couple times its not just the name but in the way you say it. Which is why the phrasing in Changes stands out, because Harry notices it.

Also, Fuego is Spanish for Fire.  Harry didn't make it up, he just maps it to his fire spell because second languages are sufficient mental insulation.  He has a line in the flashback in GS where he first comes up with it against the Walker that references it being from Spanish class.  The shout at the battle was someone ordering the human mercenaries to start shooting, right before Ebenezar killed them all, and the commander was speaking Spanish because it's Mexico.

I've heard other people say this and I do not buy into it. There was a thread with the times it was mentioned in text and even Harry notices it. Jim is very specific in the way he does things, this sticks out. I believe there was more to it than just Fuego is the Spanish word for fire.

Maybe I'm wrong though :)

Because he planned to write Mirror Mirror but noticed there should be a book in between where Harry deals with his trauma.
All the other books have been planned or rather outlined before Storm Front was published. Twelve Months is a necessary addition.

This isnt the first time its deviated though from that outline, right? IIRC Changes was supposed to be 10, or was that some Mandela effect memory I am having?

One item that has been spinning in my mind is that the marriage is to solidify the alliance between Winter and the White Court. Marrying Laura to the Winter Knight.

Harry's way out of this.... what if by the end he isn't the Winter Knight anymore?

DF Spoilers / Gatekeeper

This might be an unimportant detail but its stuck in my head.

How long has Rashid been the Gatekeeper and who did he replace?

Maybe it doesn't matter.

Where does one find this "official" timeline?

The last book before the BAT will be the time travel book, to "plug any continuity holes".

Is there a list of continuity errors posted anywhere?

Well, yes, but it's a different type of "supernatural."

This really goes into an idea I've been playing with in my head where I classify things in the Dresden verse as a Being, Creature, or Mantle. I'd put vampires as creatures, whereas Odin is a Being, and Kringle, the queens, and the Knight are mantles. I have a long draft of a post I am working on for the topic.

DF Spoilers / Winter Law
« on: August 02, 2023, 10:11:28 PM »
In Peace Talks Lara’s second favor is to have Harry help him with getting Thomas out. But in essence doing so violates Winter Law by violating the accords. So does this mean the favor outweighs the law or does it mean that Harry can do it as long as he does it without being caught in violation??

I only ask this question because in Cold Days it’s established that even verbalizing that he is going to violate Winter Law damn near capacitates him (with Lakuna).

I feel like there is a bit of contradiction here. But maybe I am misunderstanding the difference between Winter Law and the Accords.

My current running theory is the despair Harry is feeling (noted during Instinct) is that this despair leads to events of Mirror Mirror (after resolving the marriage issue). The climax of Mirror then directly leads to the events of Murphy returns through some act of the White God for what I believe will be the final exclusively Denarian book.
