DF Spoilers / Re: True Love's Protection
« on: January 29, 2026, 01:23:25 AM »
I've been assuming for awhile that the instance where Harry burned Lara at the end of White Night was a reveal hidden in plain sight. Lara finds it strange and unbelievable that Harry still bears the protection of Susan's love from years ago... but it wasn't from her at all. It was from only moments before.

Because we now know that Harry and Lash 'conceived' Bonea in a moment of love and connection that gave rise to new life. Harry has love for Susan, but the being he went home and wept for that night was Lash. And she let herself be destroyed for the love of him, saving him from Lasciel's damnation. That interaction was what shielded Harry from the Hunger that night.

This new idea about Harry's self-loathing interfering with the protection just seems to make that fit better, to me.

DF Spoilers / Re: Did I miss something? [Twelve Months]

The style of Twelve Months makes me think it could very easily have had sections added or removed throughout the writing process. It doesn't have the hour-to-hour urgency of the typical stories, and Harry refers to stuff happening in passing that could easily have been a chapter or two or a whole adventure. So it's possible that depending on when you asked Jim, Cowl and Kumori were in the story to different degrees.

I honestly figured that's where the Bock's Ordered Black Magic storyline was going, I hear people talking about using Black Magic for moral purposes and I think "Kumori?" We've seen her playing antihero for random Chicago citizens before.

DF Spoilers / Re: Shorts set During 12M ?

I wanted nothing more from Twelve Months than a glimpse of what John Marcone and Namshiel have been doing during the same time. Marcone also just lost his best friend and most ordinary human companion. He also just walked out of a war holding more cards than he did when he walked in. He is also someone who might reasonably be suspected of holding the Eye of Balor, the last time most people saw it was when he picked it up and took off towards the lake. He's gained serious real respect from the supernatural nations too.

I want to know what he's thinking.

DF Spoilers / Re: Twelve Months Quote

My best guess, and that's all it is:

There is a figure of speech I've heard often enough to think it's popular, at least regionally, "Shit weasel." Stephen King used it as the name of his rectally explosive monsters in Dreamcatcher.

I think "me-weasel" is an expression of Dresden's self hatred bleeding into his humor, as is common with seriously depressed people who crack jokes constantly. I have a brother who does this, he casually drops self loathing and suicidal ideation into his off-the-cuff banter, and I don't think it's intentional. I think it's something that feels so normal and correct that it bleeds through even when you don't mean it to, or even think about what you're saying. There's a reason people can pretend to be psychic and do mentalism tricks, most folks have no idea how much of themselves they're expressing.

Dresden takes it entirely for granted that Ramirez will know "me" means the same thing as "shit."

But that's just my impression. It could be that I missed something that makes it a callback. Just can't think what it would be.

I am very, very interested to see what develops as far as Harry's apparent investment of extra power into his companions and followers. I'm starting to wonder if his Starborn nature means he's been influencing the power levels and destinies of all his friends this whole time.

Of particular note is a certain Gentleman who gained a lot of his status from... Harry's signature.

I have a feeling Goodman Grey is going to become something of a regular. Harry needs two things these days: extremely powerful and durable allies, and beings with insight into remaining moral and using their power responsibly, while existing as something potentially monstrous and not fully free.
