DF Spoilers / Re: True Love's Protection
« on: January 26, 2026, 02:30:30 PM »
I'm hoping that the True Love and other burning conditions get a more satisfactory explanation later.

My initial WAG is that the emotional residue left behind is what actually causes the burning.  That's why a wedding ring can burn even if it hasn't been worn recently.  It can soak up "love" like a certain shroud can soak up belief.   Grief may actually burn out the feelings (literally lost love) while pining for someone helps renew it.

Ebenezer saying he has had 3 dozen apprentices is explained by his time as the Chief of the Wardens. A wizard goes through regular apprenticeship, decides to become a Warden, then get shipped off to Eb for a year or two of OJT. We know that Wardens get trained by the Chief of the Wardens per White Knight. Eb probably spent decades, or even a century, as a veteran Warden so he had plenty of time to do it even if he did it one at a time. It even explains why Harry was allowed to become a Warden without any official training. He spent years with Eb, he's a licensed PI, and has clear success performing the job of a Warden so he's got a GED in Warden training.

Harry was pretty untrusted by the wardens most of his life, and he didn't trust any of them until much later in the series.  It seems like Eb would have socialized him among his warden allies to reduce the chance he'd be beheaded.

Eb mentioned that he's had 3 dozen apprentices.  Doesn't it seem odd that none of them have stepped up to help out in any way?  Perhaps some were on the strike force to save Maggie, but none have shown any solidarity to Harry.  You'd think that Eb would have socialized him with what would presumably be his allies.

I suspect we'll see that character again since he made a big deal out of "extracting service."

But Lord Raith can't feed, right? By Maggie's curse?

Correct, Raith can't feed himself.   What Lara did with Thomas on the boat ride was Lara giving Thomas some of her energy.  Another WC vamp might be able to do that for Lord Raith.  (Which at the time seemed like the most important reason to introduce it.  It provides a way for Lord Raith to become active again and seems pretty important for Harry to consider.)

I suspect that Marcone has both a crash course in specific magic, power granted from a Fallen Angel (since Marcone didn't have a lot in the tank by himself), and Namshiel running co-pilot to assist.

Likely at the end of BG, Marcone had two issues. First, he wasn't it was worth trying to keep the eye from other interested parties. Second, throwing down with Harry isn't a sure thing (fortune seems to favor him).  Third, killing Harry might spark conflict with Mab, the White Council (at least at that point), or even Odin.

Actually I was thinking of something else.  PT showed that WC vamps can recharge other WC vamps by giving energy. It may not be the preferred way to feed, but it seems like a good way to bring Papa Raith back into the mix at nearly full power.

All it will take is someone with access to Papa Raith to cut a deal "feed me and I'll reward you."   After that his first agenda item will either be will be killing off Harry and Thomas <or> taking back control from Lara.  Either will put him on a short path to Harry.

There's also a fair chance we'll see him in Mirror Mirror if Harry is looking for an alt-Thomas or alt-Lara.

Elaine could be complicit in a number of ways that doesn't require her to be infected:
- If mortals summon Outsiders, perhaps Elaine summoned Beside to infect Aurora in exchange for protection.   Elaine said she made a deal for Summer's protection, but she could have been obscuring what deal and with whom.

- Perhaps Elaine is the referenced "Destroyer" Morgan was worried Harry was.  We still don't know what threat that poses.

- Perhaps Elaine went to Summer because of something Justin had already set in motion.  If her "entrallment" carried over, someone else still might be pulling the strings (Cowl?).

DF Spoilers / Re: [major BG spoilers] About the Council.
« on: October 07, 2020, 02:02:27 AM »
Trying to be Eb in line has some serious issues I doubt the senior council has considered or even knows.  First off, Eb may side with Harry rather than just refuse to kill him.  They already know he has some fondness and had protected him even if they don't know the full relationship.  Second, Harry just got the best of Eb.  The recent bout should show that Harry isn't just winning by luck.  Worse, since he knows that Harry was just creating a diversion, Eb can't even be certain that Harry showcased what he can do if he really wants to throw down.  Last, asking Eb to kill his apprentice sound bad. Leveling a death sentence against a senior council member for not wanting to kill sound even worse.  While Eb being the blackstaff may be a poorly kept secret it's not general knowlege.  Just how would the Merlin sell this to the general assembly without it sounding like "yea, we kill anyone that votes against us."

Actually from that point of view, the comments about submitting to a search and seizure by the wardens implies that they might use this as an excuse to steal anything of Harry's that the WC wants.   Unfortunately if they were counting on that the WC is certain to be disappointed.  Harry's position as Warden makes recovery of anything he wants to protect nearly impossible, and Harry's attitude means that he won't be submitting to the WC's authority.

True.  I could also see Harry's perception of her changing because she's just flat-out not as scary as she once was.  He was a human who was susceptible to her power before.  Now, with the mantle and the threat of Mab's offense, Lara just isn't going to risk whammying him, so he's unconsciously letting his guard down around her.

Based on PT, it sounds like Lara might not be able to consciously resist feeding if they get intimate.  I'm thinking this is a ploy by Mab to get Harry to do something else by throwing this obstacle in the way.

Obviously, Thomas would need to get caught in the act of a semi-convincing attempt, but success wasn't necessary.

Eb was just around too much, acting too emotionally invested, and completely irrational towards Thomas for something not to be going on there.

Here's a crazy theory.... Eb is responsible for Thomas attacking.  He decided it was time to get this whamp out of Harry's life.  This helps explain why Eb was checking up at Justine's and later freaked out and tried to kill Thomas at the Waterbeetle.   It's not rational, but it somewhat fits why Eb was so personally invested.

The question I was waiting for Harry to ask was, "What if she asks me to break your accords?" but he was too dumb to ask that.  I wonder if there could be a favor exchange going on as part of this book - Mab asks Lara to get someone gacked and she uses Thomas for the job earning Mab's favor, then uses said favor to get Harry to get Thomas off the hook for said gacking….

Mab essentially did answer that:

No, Harry mentions the idea -- "getting Faustian" -- and Murphy shuts that down "firmly."

That discussion is what made me think of it... Also, wasn't Summer described as the force that polices Winter?  Murphy has always put what needs to be done ahead of Harry (and other past relationships).  She makes a pretty good safeguard against Harry in a few ways.  Harry couldn't bring himself to use his might against her, but she doesn't have the same hangups (or priorities).
