Cinder Spires Spoilers / Re: Alex's anger at Abigail
« on: August 01, 2025, 07:40:36 PM »
But she knew he was his second by the time she poisoned him. I totally understand Alex's anger. I also understand Abigail's decision, but she had to know there was a chance he broke with her and do not forgive her.
What I do not think  is that Alex was angered because of his hurt pride.

I agree, I do not think it is pride driving Alex's anger. I think that it is the fact that Abigail deliberately chose to send Grimm to his death. He is not a duelist. I think everyone looking at the fight expected the Warriorborn duelist to win. Did Abigail truly think that Grimm had a better chance to beat him than Alex did? Or, did she choose to sacrifice Grimm instead of Alex. That is what is eating at Alex and most likely causing his anger.

DF Books / Re: "Twelve Months" Cover Released

Not my favorite cover. It seems subdued which fits the most likely quieter nature of this book. I'm just used to more action packed covers.

DF Spoilers / The Butcher Newsletter

Quick question for everyone. I got the initial 6 welcoming newsletters, but I have not received anything since. Has anyone else got a newsletter beyond the 6 initial ones?

DF Spoilers / Re: Harry's force rings
« on: August 01, 2025, 07:31:21 PM »
By his own admission, sometimes Harry misses some obvious-in-retrospect things.

Remember:  he was trained by centuries-old old-school wizards who were trained by even older ones.  Ancient traditions (that are really silly) are frequently perpetuated in such thought-bubble environments.
Add to that the reluctance to work with mortal technology and to use helpers (the Guard or Mister as examples) and it becomes easy for Harry to miss obvious solutions that are clear to us outsiders.

DF Spoilers / Re: Thomas
« on: August 01, 2025, 07:24:05 PM »
I don't think he is; not really.
Remember:  he has Seen the Hunger Demon inside Thomas.
Seen it in a way he cannot un-See.

Harry has seen Thomas lose control (and knows how to deal with Thomas losing control).  And when he knows Thomas is stressed/injured & close to the edge, he takes extra care.  We saw him with Susan, feeding her a bit of blood that she needed, but then punching her in the face to stop her feeding.
Harry just chooses to believe that Thomas is mostly going to continue to be worthy of Harry's trust.

And let's face it:  most people are occasionally un-trustworthy... this "problem" isn't unique to Thomas!  About 90% of American adults have drivers' licenses, and when behind the wheel they are one moment of rage (or simple inattention) away from hitting someone harder than Thomas ever could.  Yet we drive public highways & walk down sidewalks by the millions, daily...

Everybody human is fallible.  We can all do tremendous damage, in a critical moment, if we do fail.  Hell, Harry himself can do more damage than Thomas could!  Harry's entirely cognizant of this.  We need to extend trust, if we're to be trustworthy ourselves:  if we treat everyone else, at all times, as if they were on the verge of being their worst selves, that'd be a terrible way to act and to live.

This concept of extending trust and help is a major component of the books. We see very plainly in Skin Game where Murphy challenges Butters with his perception of Harry. He sees someone who is different from what he remembers and could be evil now. His perception is coloring his actions towards Harry. She sees a man fighting for his soul. She is asking him to extend Harry trust and help saying that if they treat him like he is the bad guy they will mold him into the bad guy.

DF Spoilers / Re: Two plus two is Starborn
« on: August 01, 2025, 07:20:29 PM »
I think very likely Malcolm was -- in her whole life, amongst scores or hundreds of Soulgazes -- the very first time Margaret gazed upon a genuinely good, kindly, loving soul.

I think that "restored her faith in humanity" -- possibly restored her faith in Creation itself.

I like the idea that a genuinely good soul might have changed Margaret. I also would like to toss in another potential aspect. When Harry gazed Molly he saw potential futures for her. What if something similar happened to Margaret? She saw a Good Soul and also saw ways that Good Soul might be used in the future. She might have saw the potential for a future where together they were a positive force for change. Just a WAG.

DF Spoilers / Re: Ghost Story--two things
« on: August 01, 2025, 07:15:04 PM »
However the "offical or unoffical"  doesn't have any evidence either, not in the text.  It's a guess, Eb doesn't tell Harry that Margaret left Raith in 1968 and met Malcolm in 1969.  Margaret in the soul gaze doesn't tell Harry she left Lord Raith and then met Malcolm and fell in love.. None of that is written in Blood Rites, if you can find it please give it to me.. Otherwise its a guess, just like my speculation is..  Yes, that is also possible..

The official timeline does not need evidence in the text. Is it based upon speculation and guesswork? Yes, but it is official because Jim has given it his blessing and hosted it on his website. It is not completely filled in, but what is present is accurate according to Jim at this time. He can always contradict or change it later, but for now that time line is considered canon.

Okay, it's very hot and humid here and my brain is par boiled.. Here is a crazy theory to hang onto your tin foil hats boys and girls...

The star born skeem was actually hatched in an agreement between the White Court and the White Council, and Margaret was the designated incubator with Lord Raith as daddy... This could be one of the reasons why Eb almost irrationally hates vampires, or maybe just vampires of the White Court.  What is strange is there was a time when Eb would dine with Lord Raith, Arrianna, and Margaret, so he didn't always hate them.

I doubt that the White Council and White Court would scheme together. The White Court views vampires with distrust since they can corrupt and convert human wizards. The White Council, as the guardians of humanity, are naturally set against all other forces that seek to control/enslave/destroy humanity. Elaine and Harry are both starborn with two mortal parents. There is no reason for Maggie Sr to intentionally have a child with a white court vampire to create a starborn. Why would the White Council want a starborn that another group/organization has claim/influence over. Especially an organization that can bend others to their will like the White Council. Ebeneezer hates the White Court because Lord Raith killed his daughter. There is no need to find another motive for his hatred.

DF Spoilers / Re: Out Law, novella (?)
« on: August 01, 2025, 06:55:03 PM »
I've never heard of the Out Law novella, but I agree that it makes sense to dovetail with Harry's status as an outlaw of the White Council. It could be set after Twelve Months and explore some of the fallout from that. Another idea I had was it being set from the perspective of someone on the White Council like Ramirez tasked with keeping an eye on Harry and seeing how he navigates being an "out law." Carlos could keep coming up against examples of Harry using his power for good which contrasts with what he has been told/believed leading him to possibly change his mind or challenge the White Council on Harry's behalf.

DF Spoilers / Re: Does anyone think Harry isn’t the original Merlin?
« on: August 01, 2025, 06:34:10 PM »
Exactly correct, yes.
Just listened to that scene.

Rashid definitively states that the island/well is the source of the leylines there.

So the island is the source of the leylines and provided the energy for the denarians to create the greater circle to contain Ivy. I would hazard a guess then that it provided the power for Merlin to set down spells/enchantments to create Demonreach. We know from another quote in Cold Days that the energy that keeps people away is the body heat put off by the prisoners. I wonder if it also has tainted the leylines/well. Rashid warned Harry not to touch the leylines. Was it because it was too much power for him to handle or potentially corrupting due to the prisoners?

DF Spoilers / Re: Malcolm Dresden
« on: August 01, 2025, 06:28:25 PM »
The timeline of the swords is murky, but I agree with the other posters here that you can be a Good Man without carrying the sword. I think Father Forthill is a Good Man, but has a different role/responsibility than Michael. Malcom was a Good Man and was instrumental in "rescuing" Maggie Sr and raising Harry in those initial formative years. He set Harry on the track to become who he is currently. He helped give Harry his moral compass. All without a sword.

DF Spoilers / Re: "Twelve Months" Cover Released

Count me in the crowd of people that believe the boulder/crystal spires are a reference to Demonreach not Winter. To me, the color is suggestive of the island. The large boulder behind Harry is suggestive of the large crystals imprisoning the inmates. The glowing rune/signal is suggestive of what Harry has seen on/in the tower and the cottage on the island. This also dovetails in with what we know of the story. We know that part of what this story deals with is the courtship of Harry and Lara. Thomas is a thread that connects the two of them. I suspect that healing/freeing Thomas is going to be one of the subplots of the novel. Another thread that connects the two is Justine. Since she is Nemfected, hunting her will probably be another subplot of the novel which ties into Harry's quest for information on what being Starborn means and how it relates to Outsiders.

Not my favorite cover, but this is not supposed to be an action heavy book which means that the cover was not going to be action heavy either.

DF Spoilers / Re: Dresden spells and would you change them
« on: July 02, 2025, 01:24:57 AM »
I've always thought that different spells draw energy from Harry at different rates. For instance, Fozare is a projection of force in the form of a blast of wind. Harry is taking air that is already present and moving it. Infriga is taking the water vapor in the air and cooling it down to the point that it freezes. I would hazard a guess that Infriga takes more out of Harry to do since it is doing more than just moving air around. Harry may choose which spells to use based upon how much energy he has or how much he is wanting to conserve. To me, it makes sense that in most fights, Harry had no idea how much fighting he would have to do so he started with a more conservative spell in case he had to pull out something bigger later or go through a prolonged fight.

DF Spoilers / Re: Harry's force rings
« on: July 02, 2025, 01:19:34 AM »
I agree that it's storing kinetic energy,  the difference being the source of the energy, I think it's coming from Harry and his movement,  not the motion of the rings themselves.
If all it needed was for the rings to be moving then he could have been doing that for years, instead he wears them and hits the big bag.

How does this work with his staff? He carved the spell on the end of his staff multiple times and used it against Asher in Skin Game. Harry is moving the staff, but the actual spell is not touching him directly (ie ring on skin). I could buy the argument that Harry is necessary for the rings to power up. We only saw the rings "being charged" while he was wearing them within his aura. The staff is a different story. The carved spell on the end of his staff is not within his aura. Is it charged by passive movement (just being used as a walking stick)? Does Harry have to run energy through his staff with movement to charge the spell? When it comes to the staff, it seems inefficient to have to actively run energy to it in order to charge it.

DF Spoilers / Re: Children of the sun

I ran across an interview Jim did over zoom that was mostly regarding the Alera Codex series. He was asked about the Children of the Sun and he stated that they were plant like creatures. If I come across it again I will post the link.

DF Spoilers / Re: Harry's force rings

I don't think it's the motion of the ring, it's getting energy from Harry when he moves his arms.  Putting it on something moving wouldn't do anything, even another person might need attunement or something.

IMHO

To add to g33k's answer, IIRC it states in the book where they are introduced that they are charged by kinetic energy. I take that to mean that anything that generates kinetic energy should charge the rings up.
