DF Spoilers / Re: Who is Nicodemus?
« on: May 27, 2021, 04:07:02 PM »
Judas is a good candidate, here is another possible one, Thomas.  He is called "Doubting," I can see Nic getting seduced because of his constant questioning.
We already have a Thomas, and I can't believe Nic wouldn't goad about it in some way.

Course there's also Peter, who thrice denied Christ, Simon who was maybe a bit too zealous (and overzealousness leads to disillusion, and Harry having a teacher Simon might not be as obvious a goad), Paul who got his start persecuting Christians, 2 Jameses, etcetera ...

DF Spoilers / Re: Erlking's purpose?
« on: May 16, 2021, 09:15:04 AM »
I recall, but can't find back, a quote about the Queens being able to extract more warm bodies from among the wyldfae if they so require.

So perhaps the whole wyld serves as a kind of backup for the actual courts, and ergo, the Erlking's power is supposed to be a backup for the Queens in matters directly related to the Queens' purpose (and not say for Winter-Summer powergames).

Harry got 3 more of the Arma Christi than the bad guys. Seems the Fallen are already kinda countered.

And when facing a Titan, Harry held onto his love to beat her. So he's kind of a Knight of Love already. Even if he's a bit more on the gray side.

DF Spoilers / Re: The Blackstaff picks his successor.......

As interesting as that sounds, it might just kill Dresden to attempt to use the Eye. It's not just the corruption effect. It's also the sheer power. It would be like handling nuclear energy.
Millions of people handle nuclear energy, through the system of protection known as the power grid. Who says the Blackstaff can't do the same? ;)

DF Spoilers / Re: Why was Ferrovax in GP

Ferrovax also defined Michael. And Michael is a big enough role that a throwaway bit about a scary visitor seems good enough.

DF Spoilers / Re: Think the White Council will make an attempt?
« on: May 08, 2021, 06:36:52 AM »
I agree that a question is whether the Turtlenecks qualify as human.  As we know, they don't seem to consider the White Court vampires as human, even though they are very nearly human.

But, there definitely is a self-defense exception to the First Law.  Given that, I cannot see how opposing armies in actual combat situations would not be considered within that exception.

Here's Storm Front:

Butcher, Jim. Storm Front (The Dresden Files, Book 1) (p. 75). Penguin Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.

Summer Knight:

Butcher, Jim. Summer Knight (The Dresden Files, Book 4) (p. 39). Penguin Publishing Group. Kindle Edition.
I would say instead that that all shows there's a current of WC thought that such an exception exists, but there's serious pushback against it (hence why Harry was on harsh probation and not cleared; the hardliners needed to be appeased).

Or maybe...

Mab has said she would sacrifice herself if need be to stop the Outsiders. What if she's trying to push Harry and Molly into being ready to replace her, so that when the day comes, she sacrifices herself, and they slot right in cause they've been planning to overthrow her (rather than as Harry is mostly plotting now, abandon her).

I think Jim said that Twelve Months will be about Harry dating Lara, and having to survive attempts on his life.  Do you think any of these attempts will actually be done by wizards of the White Council?
I doubt it. The Council is filthy rich and cowardly, much better to hire disposable assassins. Sure, it's Harry Dresden they're going after, so any one assassin won't be cheap, but still.

DF Spoilers / Re: The Blackstaff picks his successor.......

Now that's a good question.  The blackstaff is both the role and the artifact itself.  However Jim doesn't tend to mince words, and he did specifically say "Chooses HIS successor".  So as cool as it would be if the staff did the choosing on its own I'm pretty sure it's the actual wizard in the role who picks the next wizard to fill that role.
Well we know what Elaine said about the shape of Harry's foci. If the blackstaff has any gender...  ;)

DF Spoilers / Re: What should happen to Rudolph?

Dunno how, but just send him to jail or other protective custody, he's gonna be ever more insane as reality becomes ever more supernatural. And it's starting to strain credibility that such an obvious lickspittle gets good enough at sucking up to survive it all.

30 coins, one circle, buried under Harry's floor. He already tried with just 1!

You really do have to wonder how immature Harry was planned to be if his current book self is more mature than expected.
I can't recall his most recent looney tunes reference, but aye... you have a point ;)

DF Spoilers / Re: The Denarians are the good guys?
« on: April 25, 2021, 07:56:20 AM »
It sounds like utter nonsense, but okay, I understand this is a bit an out-there theory.

The reason it sounds like utter nonsense is because the series, from day one, has been all about "self-sacrifice good, other-sacrifice bad". Harry started a war with the Reds, and murdered them all, because he could not stand to sacrifice Susan (but of course in the end he still did to save his daughter, and we got a whole book explaining how Harry may not have been doing quite great things there - even if the end result was alright).

The Denarians, of course, torture people into being their slaves. We saw this in the very first interaction, when Harry soul-gazed one of their slaves. We saw them being evil when Shiro sacrificed himself to save Harry from them - the guy wanted to start a pandemic. We saw them try to torture Marcone and Ivy into being their slave/ally, and shoot Michael, arguably the best good guy on the field.

Only once, when Marcone stabbed Ethniu, did a Denarian do something directly useful without being a backstabby git about it.

So: no. The Denarians are not misunderstood. They're Evil. Maybe not world-destroying Evil, only lives-destroying Evil, but still Evil.

DF Spoilers / Re: How Mab gets Harry to kill loved ones
« on: April 23, 2021, 03:06:30 PM »
If he points out how it breaks their deal he can squeeze out of it without repercussions I think. More interesting though, is harry becoming a saint and declaring he loves all of humanity or something. That kinda blanket effect, if done with proper form(meaning it) would irk Mab dearly but getting around it would be crafty.
Yeah, but, it requires Harry as a saint. How likely is that?

DF Spoilers / Re: Are Fae Queens still mortals?
« on: April 22, 2021, 07:00:24 PM »
I think his big thing was Luthien and Beren.  Talk about choices..

Of Luthien and Beren from The Silmarillion, she had the choice to go to Valimar, but here, Beren could not go so...

Thus she was the only elf to truly die until Arwen gave up her heritage to wed Aragorn.
I think that's underselling Elros.
