DF Spoilers / Re: Any news on Peace Talks
« on: March 23, 2019, 05:49:05 AM »
After doing a couple of chapters in 4 days each, this last one took Jim 10 days to knock out.  I'm hoping that extra time needed to finish this last chapter indicates it was the final boss battle chapter; meaning the next chapter will be the book's denouement, the final chapter; or alternatively, it was the chapter that leads into the final boss battle, and that would mean there were only two chapters left for Jim to finish.

If there are only two chapters left, that could mean Jim is about 2 weeks; give or take a couple of days, from the finish line.  (He said with fingers crossed for luck.)

DF Spoilers / Re: If the Denarians are trapped in Demonreach...
« on: March 22, 2019, 08:52:02 AM »
Wait, why is the host a factor in this? By far the easiest way for Fallen to end up in Demonreach is for Harry to chuck the next few coins he retrieves off of dead Denarians into the back of one of the tunnels. A live host is going to be putting up one hell of a fight, but scooping pocket change off a corpse is comparatively easy.

Wrap them in whatever blessed container it takes to prevent other Denarians summoning their comrades' coins back, leave a sign "Future Wardens: Do Not Touch", and basically forget about them. Whether they're meant to be in circulation or not, that's a free-willed mortal's choice to put them well beyond reach of anyone else.

Maybe, maybe not.  Remember way back in Death Masks when Harry wanted Bob to look for the Shroud of Turin and Bob said he couldn't go anywhere near it?  His exact words were, ""It doesn't exist on the same wavelength as me. It's out of my jurisdiction."  It's possible that Alfred might say; not the exact same words, but something similar. The island might be on a different wavelength or made to lock up living beings, not incorporeal spirits; even if those spirits are trapped within a coin.

Another way to think about it is Alfred might have rules about who can be locked up on the island and who can't, and under what circumstances the island is allowed to lock up a supernatural entity.  For a variety of reasons the Denarians, or just the Fallen trapped in the coin, might not apply.  We know the island has a lot of dangerous supernatural prisoners, but we don't know how they earned their prison sentence.

The problem with this is that a coinbearer trapped in stasis on Demonreach couldn't repent (I don't think), so it seems like something the Knights would have a problem with.

It's probable that the things trapped on or within Demonreach are effectively immortal no matter where they are.  We don't know if Demonreach would keep a mortal alive for eternity.  The coin-bearer is only effectively immortal as long the fallen angel trapped in the coin maintains them.  What if whatever power that locks down Demonreach's prisoners cuts off the coin-bearer from the coin?  All of those other prisoners have metric but tons of magical potential yet none of them seem to be able to use their magic.  The coin-bearer might still be able to talk to their Fallen buddy; or not, but they would be locked down from the magical benefits, like the no-aging one.

In this scenario the coin-bearer dies of old age and Demonreach does something to remove the coin from the island; because it was the actions of the coin-bearer that got him or her locked up.  Demonreach doesn't count the demon whispering in their ear.

Before you bring up the British prisoner, it's possible that he might not be a mortal or he might be a special case.  He somehow acquired the ability to remain ageless, that cannot be undone by confinement on the island without killing him outright.  I have a feeling the island doesn't do that kind of thing to it's prisoners.

She might also have wanted to know it what was between Harry and Susan was true love, and kissing Thomas after she'd absorbed Susan's feelings about Harry via her memories was a convenient way to test it.

What?  Please explain because I'm not getting what you're trying to say.

Isn't the longest book in the series only around 53 chapters (Cold Days)?

Yes, and Skin Game and Ghost Story each had 51 chapters, though Ghost Story had over 10,000 more words than Skin Game.  So now that Jim has reached chapter 49 he must be getting near the final boss battle chapter, if he isn't there already.

However, I wouldn't be surprised if Peace Talks has as many chapters and words as Cold Days because there are a large number of potential subplots for Harry to deal with, no matter how well Jim can combine them into a single story.

I believe we are still away of "the end". We are having updates on the drafts, but they will need to be revised.

I've commented on this topic before.  One day, several years ago, while waiting for Cold Days to be released I started going back through Jim's twitter feed to see when he had announced, "The end.  I just finished (fill in the blank), now it goes to the publisher for ..."  Then I compared that date with the release date of that particular book.  I went back as far as Jim's Twitter feed went.  What I found was most of his books were released within 9 months after Jim's Twitter announcement.  There were some noticeable exceptions.  I think one book took a year or a little longer to be released.  Another was published just 3 1/2 months later; however, I believe Jim said that novel (I think it was Changes.) had already been very heavily pre-edited before he sent it to the publishers so both the publishers and Jim had much less work to do to get that one ready and out the door.  I think there was one other book that was released about 5 months after Jim's "The end" announcement.  There were also one or two books that were released within 6 to 8 months after Jim announced he had finished.

That's why I think it's likely we will get Peace Talks in time for Christmas.  Here in the U.S., publishers like to get best selling books out by the end of November to maximize sales during the Christmas season.  So unless Peace Talks needs a ton of editing and rewrites, the publisher will do their best to get it out before the end of 2019.

I agree, that was an interesting article.  After reading that I think I have a better understanding why Jim is writing other, shorter series in between the Dresden Files.

By the way Jim is up to Chapter 48 as of March 7.  That is pretty fast work for the past week or so.

DF Spoilers / Re: How many humans has Harry killed with magic? 4+?
« on: March 07, 2019, 07:35:55 AM »
When Harry talks to the twin of one of the bodyguards in the Raith's Deeps, his words seem to confirm that he killed the other twin and the second bodyguard in the car.  Of course Harry could have been wrong and they were just badly injured.  In that case I think Lara would have finished them off.

I've seen an SUV that flipped over a couple of time with several people seatbelted in their seats.  While there weren't any crushinging injuries because the passenger compartment wasn't compromised, they all had severe injuries and all of them were concussed.  All of them were knocked unconscious and after I pulled off the road and ran up to their vehicle, I could see all of them slowly regaining consciousness.  I told them not to move and said 911 had already been called.  It took a little over 20 minutes for an ambulance to arrive and none of them moved much at all.  (This occurred on a mountain road near Mammoth Mountain, CA. maybe ten, twelve years ago.)

So if the bodyguards weren't seatbelted, they probably would have died.  Harry only describes them as crumpled forms who weren't moving.  So we can't be 100% certain Harry killed them, just say it's possible, maybe even probable, that he killed them.

The updates have not been every chapter.

December 6 - Chapter 36
December 17 - Chapter 38
December 27 - Chapter 39
January 17 - Chapter 41
January 31 - Chapter 43
February 21 - Chapter 45
To which you can add chapter 46 as of 3/1 2019

So let's do some math.

December 6 - Chapter 36
December 17 - Chapter 38
11 Days - 2 chapters
December 17 - Chapter 38
December 27 - Chapter 39
10 days - 1 chapter However, I will subtract 1 day for Christmas
December 27 - Chapter 39
January 17 - Chapter 41
21 days - 2 chapters Again, I will subtract 1 day for New Year's Day
January 17 - Chapter 41
January 31 - Chapter 43
11 days - 2 chapters
January 31 - Chapter 43
February 21 - Chapter 45
21 days - 2 chapters
February 21 - Chapter 45
March 1 - Chapter 46
8 days - 1 chapter

So 11+10+21+11+21+8-2 =  80 Days estimated writing time (It doesn't matter if Jim's writing schedule is 5,6 or 7 days a week.  Assuming his schedule is steady; which I know is a huge assumption in late December, the total number of days are what matter.)

80/10 chapters = 8 days per chapter  Of course, the assumption here is each chapter is the same or very close to the same in word count.

So; in theory, it's just a question of how many chapters Jim has left to complete.  In reality, I don't know if the last chapter or three; the ones which contain the final boss battle(s), might take a day or two longer each, but I'll ignore that possibility for now.  If Peace Talks is 52 chapters long (I believe someone counted and said the last four of five books have been about 52 chapters each.), it should take 48 more days.  (6 chapters x 8 days per chapter)  If Peace Talks is 55 chapters long (I think Cold Days was 55 chapters long.  I know it had the highest word count.), then it will take 72 more days. (9 chapters x 8 days per chapter.)

Final assumption.  When we are given a chapter number, that means Jim has finished that chapter, not that he has started working on that chapter.  If the later is the case, I have to add 8 more days to my estimates, which I really don't want to do.

March 1 + 48 days = April 18
March 1 + 72 days = May 12

So now that I've done some simple math and made a rough estimate when we can expect Peace Talks to be finished, it will be interesting to see how close I get Jim gets to meeting my estimates. :)  If Peace Talks is finished within this time frame, I expect we will get it in time for Christmas.

Very true. On a related note, does anyone have any theories for why Mab hasn't given Harry a way to know what Winter Law is before he breaks it?

I wish I had a good answer for you, but I only have another question which might lead to an answer.  Do you remember the name Tam Lin? (According to Wikipedia, also a lot of other names.)  Mab mentioned him after Harry flash froze a sidhe noble at his birthday party in Arctis Tor.  Mab's exact words were: "No one has lifted a hand to them that way since the days of Tam Lin."  This strongly suggests Tam Lin was the Winter Knight back in the day.

I've read a wiki article about Tam Lin.  It mentions the fae were after him, I think they were going to sacrifice him.  From what I read I pictured the Wild Hunt was after him.  A mortal women hides Tam.  There's a lot of shape shifting involved in keeping him hidden from the fae but eventually he escapes.  I'm thinking that in one of the poems or stories about Tam Lin there might be a clue to the Winter Law Mab might want to keep hidden from Harry.

Looking over the wiki article, there are many people who have used the character of Tam Lin in their own stories and there was even a movie made in 1970 titled: Tam-Lin, also known as The Ballad of Tam-Lin, The Devil's Widow and The Devil's Woman.  It was directed by Roddy McDowall and it took place in modern London of 1970.  (Sort of an Austin Powers version of a spooky fairy tale.)  From reading a review on IMDB, Ava Gardner played the Fairy Queen, though from looking at the movie poster, her character may have more in common with Lara Raith than Mab.  The point I want to make is; for all we know Jim might have seen this movie on some late night cable channel and lifted an element from the movie to create a Winter Law or two.  (I never even heard of this movie before I read the Wiki article.)

If anyone has read the original poem or song of Tam Lin, that might be a good place to look for clues.

In "Changes," Harry tells Mab he will become the Winter Knight if she heals him so he can rescue his daughter and "give me your word that you will never command me to lift my hand against those I love."  So I'm not talking about that caveat in their agreement.

I want to know if anyone on the forum who has read about the mythology of the fae knows of something, anything the fae aren't allowed to do to, or ask of mortals, even if it isn't specifically about Mab or any of the fae with names that might signify Mab.  I have this odd idea how Harry might get out of the Winter Knight gig.

When Harry agrees to be the Winter Knight Mab says to him, "Once you are my Knight, once this last quest of yours is complete, you are mine. You will destroy what I wish you to destroy. Kill whatsoever I wish you to kill. You will be mine, blood, bone, and breath. Do you understand this?"  That sounds awfully complete, but the term "blood, bone, and breath" sounds more like a term of art; Mab bragging about being Harry's new boss, rather than an actual terms that he must fulfill.  It seems to me the destroying and killing part are the crucial orders Harry has to carry out.  Plus, I find it more than just odd that Harry doesn't automatically get to learn Winter Law or have an easily obtainable source; like a book or tutor, to learn it from.  It's almost like Mab doesn't want Harry to know anymore about Winter Law than she needs him to know.

So I'm thinking, what if Mab really wants Harry to do something, but it's not something he's obligated to do as the Winter Knight.  If Harry thinks he has to do Mab's bidding, it doesn't matter, he does the job, Mab is happy and (if he survives) Harry remains the Winter Knight.  However, if Harry learns that Winter Law doesn't apply to this particular job, he could say, "I will do it as a favor Mab, if you ask me."  Then; if Mab is forced to ask Harry to do this task as a favor, I think Harry's old deal with Mab supersedes the current one.  As a reminder that deal goes like this; "From time to time, I will make a request of you. When you have fulfilled three requests, your obligation to me ceases."  I don't think there was anything said when Harry became the Winter Knight that nullifies that.

I think many of us have had the thought that if Harry finds a way out of the Winter Knight job, Mab can still ask one more favor of him.  That not only seems logical, it's something we can all predict will happen.  If I'm right about why Harry doesn't have an easy way to learn Winter Law, then not only is the idea that Harry might be able to turn the tables on Mab a viable one, it's something Jim might want to do in order to subvert our expectations, but do so in a good way.  (Not like we have seen in a once uber popular, now crippled, maybe dying movie franchise that I will not name.)

Even aside from the interest, that's probably got enough collector's value that it would have been a shame to just discard.

I still have that 1942 Atlas and it's in good condition.  I have a cousin who chose a first edition (first in English, not French) of the "Story of O" from my grandmother's extra books.  I didn't know what that novel was at the time.

By the way, as of a few days ago, Jim is up to chapter 45.

DF Spoilers / Re: The Gatekeeper in Summer Knight

The Gatekeeper is able to track Harry in some fashion.
Quote
"What are you doing here?"
"Looking for you," he said.
"You've been watching?"
He shook his head. "Call it listening. But I have had glimpses of you. And matters are worsening in Chicago."

The Gatekeeper may not be tracking Harry directly.  We have so little information to work with.  For example, if I were to ask forum members to give an explanation of what the Gatekeeper meant when he said, "Call it listening," I bet every response would be unique, and we wouldn't have a way to confirm any of them. (So please don't try unless you can quote something directly from one of the novels to back you up.) To get back to my main point, whatever the Gatekeeper may be perceiving, it's possible Rashid is looking for black magic, or to steal a Star Wars term; "a disturbance in the Force," or Mab might call it, "A disturbance in the balance of forces," and Harry is often at or near the center of those disturbances, so that could be how the Gatekeeper gets glimpses of, and eventually finds Harry.

Only in Turn Coat, after Harry called the White Council and told them he had Morgan, can we safely assume the Gatekeeper was directly looking for Harry.  Even then, we don't really know if Rashid saw where Harry was, or if he saw, heard or felt something that told him to go to Demonreach without knowing; I mean having having 100% knowledge, that Harry was there.  It could have been, the Gatekeeper's search only revealed to him that he had to get to the dock on Demonreach to learn the truth.  He could have easily guessed that Harry would be there, but that's not the same thing as being certain that Harry would be there.

Unless the Gatekeeper gives us a more detailed explanation of how he gets these perceptions; which seems really unlikely, or Harry gets to use the Outer Gates material himself to do some kind of magic search; which could happen in a future story, we don't have a solid explanation of what the Gatekeeper does or what he's looking for.  By the way, I'm fine if we never do.  Not everything in the Dresden Files requires a detailed explanation.

A lot of knowledge is like that. No particular understanding is needed and you can drill it into young children’s heads. But that does not mean it is always useless knowledge, not if you build upon it.

A place name is just a word and the location is just part of its meaning. The more words you know the easier you can read and look up the ones you do not know.

And it tells you something about your interests. If you follow the news and took an effort to find out where that flood or earthquake really was. If you read a history book and looked at a map. Or maybe you just know more about the geography of middle earth than this one, not everyone is interested in everything.

Yes, to this.  When I was very young, maybe five or six, someone gave me a puzzle.  It was a wooden puzzle with fifty pieces, the fifty states of the U.S.  Of course Hawaii was just a square with the islands painted on it that you stuck off in its own little square on the left hand side of the map.  Canada was included only so you could stick Alaska next to it, and the individual Canadian provinces weren't puzzle pieces though I believe they were drawn in on the map.  The capital city of each state was drawn on each puzzle piece.  So; for example, I learned that Bismarck was the capital city of North Dakota even though I had never been there. (And still haven't.)

You could say I didn't learn much from this puzzle, but as I grew up, if I heard a news story that a tornado had done great damage near Topeka, I knew that was in Kansas and I had a rough idea how far away it was from me.

Several years later my grandmother decided to she wanted to clear some space and she asked family members if they wanted any old books before she gave them to Goodwill or just threw them away.  I picked out a large World Atlas mostly because it had a large number of great photos in it, but it also told a story because it was published in 1942.  The map of most of Europe was one large Nazi flag.  I don't remember if it was named "German Empire" or "Nazi Occupied Europe."  There was an equally large Japanese Rising Sun flag spread out over a large part of the Pacific Ocean, South East Asia and China labeled "Japanese Empire."  I knew a little about the Second World War, but seeing that book made it much more real for me.  I think that Atlas made me want to learn more about history in general.

I've never seen it! Where is it available?

I found my DIVX copy of the Storm Front pilot using Bit Torrent, but that was about five or six years ago.  If you can't find it, message me with your email address and I'll send you a copy.
