DF Spoilers / Re: Was Ascher telling the truth?
« on: December 15, 2017, 02:23:26 PM »
Warlocks are not human? That is exactly why being branded a warlock is something to be feared by minor talents more so because some wardens can be very creative in explaining the laws when it suits them, see Morgan.

Who did not trust his own system, and he should know.

Who also showed that the white councils attitude to fair trials is not restricted to warlocks. Nobody accused Morgan of being a warlock but he was hooded anyway and had no defense exept for what nepotism brought him.

We know the warden counted members like Justin so expecting exemplary behaviour from all of them is not realistic. And more important thee is no appeal possible and the whole affair can be finished on site with whoever available.

So much power with so little oversight and no appeal or second opinion is scary. It is not good for people even the best of them.

And what Bob said was not a lie, with that cloack he can.

In non-magic human society, people go to jail. There are several aspects of this: Punishment, possible rehabilitation and to separate people, who break the law from people, who don't break the laws.

With black magic, there is the issue of black magic corrupting the mind and soul. Once a magic user does enough bad things, their minds are irreparable. That is the premise we have here. Molly rewired heads of how many people? 2? Note her impulse control issues. And she had very good intentions.

@Arjan: Your whole argument is basically "anarchy for everyone and people will naturally behave well" combined with "Death to the fascist oppressors!". This doesn't hold water in any society for long, Mr. Shoe. If a society is to have rules, there need  be enforcers who make sure that the rules don't get broken. It's plain and simple like that. Why, do you ask? For the very same reason, why communism can't work efficiently and tends to break down eventually. Because of human nature. Most human are naturally selfish creatures, even though during our lives in some civilizations, we learn to behave a lot less selfishly. And yes, there are some people who for one reason or another are fairly little selfish or even not at all. But those are few and far between.

Now, to explain, why it's counterintuitive for wardens to abuse their power:
1) Even talented mages can be born from less talented mages. Therefore if mages wish to live on as a species, they actually need to protect the lesser talents ] ref.: White Night ]. So if one warden would feel like bullying/killing some lesser talents, another warden would feel compelled to stop him.
2) Truly strong people don't feel the need to bully the weak. It may sound like a cliché, but it's also the truth. Because weak people pose no challenge. Strong people became strong by overcoming real challenges. Same thing goes for smart people. And if said person feels pride in his achievements, bullying weak people tarnishes his own self-image.
3) It's one thing to keep people scared of wardens. It keeps them on their toes. Let's say, that a single warden went rogue and his targets don't manage to tell anyone for some reason [ you know, because there are no phones, no Internet, no mail, hell, not even a fire to send smoke signals. ]. I'd like to ask you a few questions, if you don't mind:
a) Why wouldn't the targets simply run away?
b) Holding a hostage is exhausting and you have to keep them alive, if you really, really want to earn your De Sade badge. How do you do this while actually performing your Warden duties?
... and finally...
c) Wardens are not immortal. They are not gods. They may be very powerful but that doesn't mean that they are unbeatable with any other means than magic. And while magic is nifty, I read somewhere, that it's very difficult to cast a spell when someone bashes you over the head or kicks you into a garbage can. So, pray, explain to me: how precisely would said rogue warden make sure that his victims wouldn't stick together, stand up to him and either knock him out or even kill him?

Hmm... I don't see Susan coming back in any form except some flashbacks. It would cheapen Changes and her whole struggle.

I'm fairly certain of Reapergirl being a new character. Although, in the end she may end up being used as a single-appearance character.

I admit... I have this crazy idea that Uriel
(click to show/hide)
Hmm... if you go through the bible a few times, you'll end up getting the idea, that Archangel Michael is who actually became Jesus Christ. But it may well be, that Jim is going to play the artist card in this case.

Oh... and I'd rather not be getting too deep into religion debates, but why would a god be mad about his creation doing it's job? Lucifel wouldn't be able to rebel, if God didn't make him able to do that. Given how logic works in religion, the rebellion was a part of God's plan.

Quote from: RobReece
the problem with Reapergirl being Susan is that the reapergirl was an angel and people don't become angels.  That's primarily why I believe that it could have been Lash.
Hmm... You're basically talking about the Kabbalah. And yes, Michael in Skin Game temporarily jumped up a few Sephiroths. So no, it's not out of the question, but resurrecting Susan would basically destroy the impact of Changes. For a story to be enjoyable there have to be bad scenes to highlight the good scenes. It works like this in real life as well.

I agree, and disagree lol. I think it's evidence that in generations past the roles now held by Christian or at least monotheistic religions on the angelic scale were previously held by others. various reasonings
A) Lasciel's 'closest to true form' from Harry's intuition is the Greek woman. Combine that with the Woj angels may only believe they are the originals and/or from the beginning because of faith and the current Order of Angels may only be risen from the last time the Apocalypse went down.
B) Dragons existed before humans ever came into the balance, So humanoid God's and angels weren't always in true form. Case in point, Dragons could be considered the Gods of the dinosaur era.
C) Naaglooshi are from an Angelic order whom 'retreated' after their job was done, they stayed and were corrupted by it... A previous order. Comparable to Odin saying the Jotun's retreated.

As Bob said: not every messenger is angelic in nature.

... What precisely was Lash really that she'd die. DIE mind you, and be reborn in a new form, still an angel?
She was made of Harry, his life, his brain, she could change because she was effectively mortal. She could chose specifically because she gained it from Harry(see woj on Free Will and if Lash got it). What died was not anything to do with an Angel except that it was once printed out by one. Effectively a piece of Harry died, she wasn't like Bonnie gestating to be born.
Lash was made of Lash. She was living in Harry. That's why she was her own person but had to take some of Harry's essence to actually gain free will. And since she used her free will to act according to her love for Harry, this was what gave birth to Bonnie.

LOL ... I've used that link many times when people ask.

As to rumors ... it's been suggested that since we're getting Brief Cases in the Spring, Peace Talks may be available next Fall.  But nothing specific.
I don't mean to be mean... but this huge pause is kinda worrying. Wasn't there somewhere a thought that Jim maybe doesn't like writing Dresden Files that much?

Erm... how can you wonder about something as straightforward and simple:

Maybe in the first couple of books; but, i think he has matured past that. Though, I am in my 40s and still get a little giddy with nudity.
I was fairly open about many things for a long time... but since I spent some time in hospitals and treatments where I had to be naked in front of other people, including ladies my age or younger, I simply stopped caring.

You definitely like them dark and dangerous, firestarter. Thanks for the heads-up on Nightshade. I have been curious about it.

I hope we see the Reaper again, too.
I like personalities similar to mine :) doing your duty to the best of your ability. Whatever is necessary but sticking to the rules.

I also expect the Reapergirl and Harry meeting either in NeverNever or Harry doing another short out-of-body routine, since she's a divine entity and probably can't make herself perceivable like Mr. Sunshine can.

DF Spoilers / Re: Who is the most evil character in the Dresdenverse?
« on: December 14, 2017, 11:43:56 AM »
How do we know he wasn't one or the other? He was very steeped in Dark Magic corruption at the least, which is insanity inducing. Mayhaps how he appeared in the recent short story is indicative he was once more of a man then Monster?

Like Harry, Kemmler was a man that made choices. Unlike Harry, Kemmler let his good intentions slip away.

Well, my starting and ending point is the current information.

Nicodemus obviously believes that he's doing the right thing and is trying to build up power to save the world in the end. And he's somehow trying to battle Outsiders.
Ariana was conned by the Red King and is acting because of injured pride and out of revenge.
Mab is only doing her duty to protect the world from Outsiders.
The Red King is simply tending to his "herd". For him it's basically growing his food source and keeping his power / growing it.
Lord Raith is fairly similar to the Red King in this aspect.Alicia Nelson
Lara Raith dtto, only being sexier because female and a lot more seductive :)
Cowl is quite possibly working with Outsiders. Either got conned or believes to use the power of Outsiders to fight outsiders.
Corpsetaker wants power and is insane. It may be the conclusion of her jumping bodies and her psyche breaking part by part as she encounters various minds [ Luccio is also sometimes dreaming memories of Alicia Nelson ]
Maeve has mommy issues and is driven insane by the crazy libido she can't satisfy. Nemfection didn't help with that. Again, not evil, just a bit insane and a bit mind-controlled. I'm guessing it's similar to Aurora's problem
Mavra is simply one of the surviving Black Court members. As a vampire, she feeds on humans. It's her nature. We don't hate piranhas for killing people and animals because they want to feed. Although I most certainly wouldn't want them in an aquarium at home. Or my bathtub for that matter.
Polonius Lartessa is a bratty nasty girl who didn't manage to grow up in almost 2 millenia. But in the long-term she's probably working with Nicodemus.
Peabody is/was just a power-hungry small-minded thug.
Marcone is simply a businessman who decided, that controlling the mob is the best way to limit the bad things that happen. As was noted in the books, by someone, I think it was Nicodemus, he'd be a good king. Not a kind king, but a good one.
Shagnasty is a Navaho variant of a fallen angel. Kinda pitiful.
Evil Bob is created from twisted parts of Bob. And Bob kinda has a problem distinguishing between good and evil. So I expect "Evil" Bob to have the same issue.
Dracul... well... as someone who kinda read about Vlad II and Vlad III, they have been attributed many nasty things, but what they did was to protect their land from extremely hostile invaders. Again, not evil. Just doing what is necessary.

So there from me :)

Oh, Reapergirl... Hmm... interesting. I didn't think much about her. I liked that character. Just as I think of Mab, I find her very dateable :)

And since Jim admitted to being too lazy to create single-use-characters, I expect us meeting the charming entity again.

Hmm... I think I'd be happier with skinning, pulling nails and pouring salt and booze over his body...

I'm a guy who is constantly being accused of flirting with women, even though it's not intentional flirting, it's simply how I talk. So I'm pretty sure that I'd enjoy that kind of banter :) but Harry has some kind of issues from what I see. He considers talking about certain topics and sleeping with someone a lot closer than I do. It makes some scenes twice as funny to me :)

Harry kinda reminds me of a couple of 12 year olds giggling and going red over a porn magazine they stole/found around their granddad's house.

Actually, I think that the only "evil" character is Kemmler. He's hurting people for entirely selfish reasons from what we've learned.

The other characters have either a higher goal in mind or are insane. This doesn't make their action less bad, but it doesn't mean, that they are evil. They have a goal and are simply unscrupulous. "The end justifies the means" I can't call that evil. I may give it various names, but I can't call it evil.
