Author Craft / Re: New Writer's Group from this Board

I'm with you Mickey Finn.  Is there some way we can get clarification as to their intent before we start?
Other than that, I'm cool with it.

It's all good Mickey Finn.

We would rather you do it right. If there is anything we can do to help out...

I tried the one chapter- one file thing and it just didn't work for me. I found that I kept a better continuity if everything is in one file.  Word does get more flaky than normal with a large file, but then I never trust Word's spell checker or grammer checker, too unreliable.

I have been writing since I was a kid. Mostly short stories.  About five years ago I decided to try my hand at a novel.  I wrote a totally crappy 90,000 word monster, and put it on a shelf. I take it out once in a while to remind myself that I had a lot to learn.

I have learned a lot since and am currently working on a couple of novels.  Jim's livejournal and several books by Jack Bickham have helped my craft tremendously.
The main novel that I am working on is kind of cyberpunk in that there is strong use of technology, but it is more like magic.
I have plotted the first book and have written the first couple of chapters.  It seems to be going well, but of course I am biased.  I hope to some day be able to mark my name in the published professional authors list.

Author Craft / SEQUELS - from the livejournal

Jim -  in the livejournal, you mentioned sequels and stated that they "are an indispensable portion of your story and will have their own article later."

I was hoping for some clarification on sequels.  I tried to look up the term, but it just lead to the Rocky IV kind of definition.

And since I know that Jim is a busy man, if anyone else has some insight to this term, I would greatly appreciate it.

thanks

Author Craft / Re: In Line With Outlines?
« on: July 13, 2006, 12:51:18 PM »
I don't generally use an outline.  I have tried it in the past and never made it past the outline phase.  What works for me is to keep notes about everything, especially key scenes.  I have a list of key scenes and write toward them.  If a scene doesn't work becasue the plot has shifted, then I either adapt or abandon the scene.  It's not perfect, but it works for me.

As a writer, I think that as long has the protagonist has something to lose (even if it isn't his life), then it could make for an good story.  But the key would be to make the reader care about the consequences and maybe the fact that he is immortal (ie, has to live with himself and his choices forever) could be used very effectively.

I think it would be harder to hook the reader, but could be worth the effort.

As a reader, I would be fine with it, as long as I felt that he was vulnerable in other ways.

*waiting for someone to suggest a writer's group being formed from these boards*

Now that is a REALLY great idea.

Would anyone be interested in something like that?   ;D

Author Craft / On-line writers groups
« on: June 26, 2006, 01:12:01 PM »
Hey all,
I have been writing for most of my life. I have never been part of a writers group, on-line or otherwise.  I started looking around for one in my area (Oklahoma City), but most of the ones I found are for Romance or some other genre.

Here's my questions:
How many of you belong to on-line writers groups?
Are they as useful as in-person writers groups?
Are there any that you would recommend for an unpublished aspiring writer?

thanks in advance for the info.
