DFRPG / Had the first game last night...
« on: April 03, 2011, 03:39:17 PM »
It went pretty good.  The players caught on to the idea of Aspects pretty quickly, the Wizard threw some Evoc with a minimum of fuss, the White Court Vampire sexed things up and the Pure Mortal had his mind opened pretty quickly.

The game started In Media Res (as it seemed the easiest way to get into the mechanics of things) but what I did was set up a basic scenario with some cultists and one low rent sorceror then asked the players "why would your PC be in the trailer park at 2:00am on a Thursday morning" to get them to use their Aspects to basically self-compel and get them into the game.  Before long they were chasing cultists through the woods and facing down a mass of tentacles that was emerging from a nearby sewage lagoon (forcing the PCs to team up).  It was also lots of fun when the White Court Vampire handed the Wizard her brand new smartphone so he could call the Warden and its simply fizzled in his hand.  She was livid:)

The system was really pretty elegant and snapped into place once the players got the hang of Maneauvers and Blocking.  The few sticking points we had were easily smoothed out (the book has a great Index and lots of cross referencing).

DFRPG / Question on Feeding Dependency
« on: April 02, 2011, 10:04:23 PM »
Is the Hunger Attack at the end of the scene modified for how many times an ability was used?  If someone use Inhuman Speed twice in a Scene, is the Attack made at +2 (Inhuman Speed) or +4 (Inhuman Speed x2).

DFRPG / Re: Getting Extra Mental or Social Stress Boxes?
« on: April 02, 2011, 03:02:42 PM »

On the flip side, could one technically take some sort of supernatural recovery for  Mental and Social stress? For instance being able to recover quicker from said consequences?

So in the end, is supernatural toughness only applicable to physical stress or could you take different versions for other forms of stress?

Our game that starts tonight has a True Believer Priest with an Item of Power that's essentially a rosary that gives him the Inhuman Recovery ability for Mental "damage".  No reason why you can't reskin the existing toughness powers and apply them to other Stress Tracks, just so long as it makes sense for the character.

3. What is an area of effect interesting way to use air magic?
Vibrate the air in ultralow frequencies, creating the infrasonics and the fear effects that they induce.

That`s a great idea.  Unfortunately when I saw this my mind went right to The Brown Note ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brown_note).

Perfectly valid for a maneuver though:)

Thanks for the advice, I never thought about equating a Stunt with an Item of Power (as in to get the +2 to damage).

I`m definitely going to use either a reskinned Inhuman Recovery or a reskinned Inhuman Toughness to simulate a magical rosary`s effects on the priest`s mental fortitude.  I think Recovery maybe to show that he has to hold it, pray, recite the rosary etc to use the powers.  I`ll leave it up to the player.

For the Winter Knight`s gun, I`m going to give it Weapon +2 (for a +5 Total, as he`s a sniper and uses rifles) along with the "winter`s chill" suggestion to both be unlimited ammo, untraceable to mundane means (ice bullets..yes we know its not possible, that`s what makes it magic) and satisfy the Summer Catch.  I may also have it apply to any other creatures they encounter who are susceptible to cold.  The player`s likely creative enough to ask about using the cold for Maneauvers as well so I`ll allow a "can use cold/frost/ice for Maneauvers" sort of thing as well.

To get the +2 damage all you need is a -1 power so say for example

-1 Freezing Bullets - Your gun does an additional +2 cold damage which satisfies the catch for summer fae.

How does one get the -1 = +2 damage though?  I guess its modeled after Claws?

Go with Wrath, nothing says "mundane death" like "beaten to death by the six dudes he decided to pick a fight with."

oooohhh.... I like this idea for Wrath vamps:)  I'm so going to steal this:)

DFRPG / Items of Power question
« on: March 22, 2011, 08:31:18 PM »
Alrighty...we're new to this so bear with me:)

I have two PCs who are eyeing "Item of Power", one a Knight of the Winter Court gun based character and the other a True Believer Priest conflicted about his church vs. his sexual identity as a gay man.  Both players are looking for something in the 1 pt range to keep their Refresh at 2 (they'd like a slight amount of wiggle room when I Compel...unlike the WCV and the Wizard with their Refresh of 1).

For the Priest I'm looking at a Rosary that grants something similar to Inhuman Toughness or Recovery, but for Mental "damage".  I can give it either power and then the +1 Refresh for being an item of power, correct?

For the Knight, he wants a weapon.  Specifically a gun, but I'm really at a loss as to how to make one.  Is it a simple matter of "a normal gun is Weapon 2, yours is Weapon 4) and count that 2 point bonus as a -2 Refresh power (then offset by the +1 Item Bonus)?  How do I model the fact that the gun would be extra useful against Summer?

.  But instead, you come off sounding like a stuck up Cam LARPer whose been playing his fantasy WoD self for too long and thinks that because he hooked up with some Cam LARP girls IC once, that he is a master of in game seduction.

Not helping your case any to make broad generalizations about other gamers.  Just sayin`

I'm not sure about your ability to do a female voice, but mine is on the far side of ridiculous sounding falsetto.  So having a villain with a Warner Brothers Cartoon voice just doesn't really seem like a great choice, thus, male villains.  It's not that it makes me particularly uncomfortable, it just sounds absurd to be threatened by Bugs Bunny's female voice.  You are correct I don't know how to run a believable seductive NPC.  My personal method of seduction involves utilizing small physical contact, flirting, and a other subtle things, and doesn't play well to a tabletop style game where the players are sitting around a table.

I`ve never once in my nearly 30 years of GMing tried to do a female voice.  Some people are great at voices, dialects, accents, etc.  I know I`m not one of them.  That doesn`t stop my NPCs from being memorable or distinct.  Its about word choice, speaking cadence, whether or not they make bad puns, if they use double entendres.  Silly voices are distracting, its what the NPC says and how they behave that`s important and giving them distinct voices and personalities will do far more than any falsetto ever will.

1. What is a non-combat interesting way to use spirit magic?
Using two cross breezes to steady yourself on a narrow ledge/balance beam/other precarious position.

2. What is a single target interesting way to use spirit magic?
Dust in the eyes at 50mph!!

3. What is an area of effect interesting way to use spirit magic?
Severe downdrafts keeping people pinned to the ground.

4. What is an interesting way to block using spirit magic?
Grab something nearby to telekinetically  intercept.

5. What would be an interesting way to impede someones movement with sprit magic?
Produce an updraft under them that keeps them juggled in one spot.

Heh..powergaming.  Wonder how many people here have played Scion:)

In the end, if everyone at the table is having fun, then power levels and character optimization doesn`t matter.  Everyone is there on a Saturday night (or what have you) to be entertained and it is everyone`s responsibility to not only make sure they`re having fun but so is everyone else.  The Cortex Plus books (Smallville and Leverage to date) have very clear and very good guidelines of the responsibilities for both players and GM and I tend to use them a lot.

Could this have come across as more condescending? Who are you to tell people what they should and should not feel comfortable with?

As for the issue at hand, does it have to be a lust vampire? If it's feeding habits have not already been determined you could always make it a less awkward emotion.

100% This:)

I`ve been running games for a long, long, long time, quite probably longer than some of you reading this (going in to my 3rd decade now) and this sort of condescending elitist crap doesn`t help at all.  The OP came here looking for help in a situation his group may find delicate.  Telling him his group may not be mature enough to handle this game isn`t helping.

Step one - talk to the players involved.  Always, always, always make sure everyone is on the same page.  Maybe they`re okay with RPing the seduction aspects and the perceived awkwardness is in your head.  Maybe they`re not and would rather just make some quick descriptions and roll some dice.  Each group dynamic is different but the first step to making things work is to talk it out.

Step Two - Look at the Story and figure out if it is necessary for the WC vamps to feed off lust.  Maybe its not and you can avoid the whole situation without compromising the story.

Step Three - Zig instead of zagging.  If the players (and characters) are expecting WC vampires to come after them, then do something else.  The WC is an ideal behind the scenes bad guy and that is far more their style anyway.  Maybe they have a sorceror under their sway who`ll provide some demonic muscle.  Maybe they pay off a ghoul clan to attack and scatter the PCs and then the WC vampire can pick them off one at a time.  Think outside the box and your story will be better for it.

I'd recommend tweaking one of Sophie's Aspects to be a bit different -- "Lead Unto Temptation" and "Aware of Temptation" are rather similar.

I think the intent is to use one for Seduction type things and the other to be aware of what buttons to press but I agree and will be working on the actual wording of the Aspects over the course of the first couple of games.

DFRPG / Re: Heart-Exploding Spell and the Stress Track
« on: March 22, 2011, 10:36:42 AM »
My books description of the Heart Exploding Spell doesn't list 10 Shifts to fill up a Stress bar, but 5 Shifts to fill the box beyond a 4 Stress bar (YS 301).

20 for the Consequences
9 to overcome a Superb Endurance + 4 roll
2 for extra mild Consequence
5 to land beyond the 4th box on the Stress bar

Total of 36
