DF Spoilers / Re: Who is Sandra Marling?
« on: November 24, 2018, 02:26:20 AM »
I mean, by definition if a villain was being super stealthy and Harry and the audience didn't recognize them yet, we wouldn't know if Mouse missed alerting on somebody.

Sure, but we have never seen a situation in which someone turned out to be a villain (defined as monster/black magic user), and Mouse didn't alert to them before Harry figured out why/how that person was a villain. I feel that it would be a cheap trick if Sandra turned out to be Marva, and Mouse didn't alert to her. Now if she was some sort of cutout, that would not bother me.

P.s. please correct me if I am wrong.

From what Jim himself has said:

1. He needed a physical space he owned and had moral authority over to write efficiently in.

2. He is nervous about changing the original outline he had to begin with.

3. It gets harder to write as more backstory is canonically established.

Therefore, I think he will start publishing more now that he has a home. He will also publish somewhat more slowly than he did when he had less continuity considerations to worry about.

Edit: I somehow hit alt+post on accident well before I was ready.

Edit 2: That is alt+s. The holiday cheer is affecting me.

The cell phone thing just means she isn't a sufficiently powerful mortal magic user. I think Mort can use them, and Binder definitely can.

I may be mistaken, but I believe we have seen Mouse growl at black magic users and monsters with the exceptions of everyone already knew the threat was present, and Harry said the black magic user/monster was okay.

Two points I picked up:
  • Mouse never growls at her.
  • She has a cell phone.

DF Spoilers / Re: Madeline Raith and Christos
« on: November 20, 2018, 09:44:44 PM »
Cristos was the replacement LaFortier's followers wanted. He wasn't the natural next Senior Council member. The natural replacement was Klaus the Toymaker. Everyone senior to him had already passed and/or been absent at least twice, and maybe even killed. The only way Cristos was able to skip to the front of the line was by threatening to destroy the Council.

If Cristos was Black Council, he would have feigned acceptance of Klaus on the part of his constituency and then told his constituency that they had been railroaded by the Merlin.

That's the best reasoning I can come up with for "Cristos isn't Black Council," and it relies on the assumption that Cristos couldn't put himself forward in the election process once Klaus accepted the nomination, which isn't an assumption I'm willing to make.

There's obviously more than one bad guy in the Council. Cristos is a good bet. If I had to pick someone as the bad guy on the Council, I don't see a better pick. Long story short, I agree with you, but I just like the idea that Cristos is some stupid puppet. Kind of how I like the idea of winning the lottery but don't think I'm going to win (except I have better, if not good, odds with Cristos).

On a side note, we've been spelling Cristos wrong.

I've assumed Christos. The whole thing was coordinated too much, and he's pretty much the only Council member who gained something from Turn Coat.
It's been a while since I've read it, but I remember it being suggested that killer killed LaFortier because LaFortier found out who was the traitor. Therefore, no one needed to benefit to explain the events. (Obviously Peabody wasn't the only one involved as there were two people on the island summoning the spiders).

I like the idea of Christos just being a moron.

I can't find the quote, but I think the Council killed him before he could do the ritual. Additionally, I would think that the Council didn't have any idea about the Darkhallow based on Luccio and Morgan's reactions to it and Harry's explanation of it. If they had killed Kemmler during a Darkhallow, they would have known what was going on before Harry got there and explained it. Also, they would have known that they needed necromancy.

Yes, the question was is this explicitly stated somewhere?

Not in Dead Beat, where we learn (in retrospect), that Mab has discovered that something is wrong with Lea. She broke Winter Law, which shouldn't be possible for a Winter faerie to do.

I'm reading Proven Guilty now. If I find anything that supports or contravenes that statement, I'll let you know.

That's pretty good. It would answer my question about why Mab didn't declare war on the Reds. Another explanation could be that Mab was already planning the events of Changes, so she didn't need to.

Madrigal Raith points out that he was invited to SplatterCon!!! a year ago. This means that whoever planned the phobophage attacks not only knew Madrigal's "new tastes" (to make him a scapegoat) but also planned it a year in advance.

While I agree with your interpretation, whoever planned the attacks could have learned of his attendance and taken advantage of it at any point. It could also just be a coincidence, but random coincidences are vary rare in fiction.

Here's the quote from Dead Beat:
Quote
"For what reason have you detained her?"
"Because I do not tolerate challenges to my authority," [narration] "Certain events had convinced your godmother that she was no longer bound by my word and will. She is now learning otherwise."

From that, and what we learn about Winter Law in Cold Days, it sounds like Lea was found out when she broke Winter Law.

Half right.  He ordered Bob to forgot his time with Kemler.  He did NOT limit Bob to only general knowledge.   Bob was limited to what he learned about Kemler from the time he was not with Kemler.  That means (in practice) only general knowledge at the beginning of Dead Beat.   But the order was specific to Kemler, not information about Kemler.

Harry was targeting the evil personality of Bob.

So you agree that he was limited to general knowledge, like the book said, and therefore, Bob would not have known how Kemmler had described the Darkhallow?

Quote
"Can you still remember general knowledge about Kemmler?"
"Nothing you couldn't find in other places. But general knowledge I learned when Justin was with the Wardens, yes.
Emphasis added.

I'm not saying Harry ordered Bob to only remember general knowledge; I'm saying Harry limited Bob to general knowledge by ordering him to forget his time with Kemmler. I'm only saying what Harry asked, and Bob confirmed.

Actually, Harry's flashback to the confrontation with HWW Behind in Ghost Story also showed him using a slowed time effect to toy with the young gas station attendant before murdering him.

Good point.

Inside her own Winter territory in Faerie, though. Having the juice to manage that in the mortal world while simultaneously confronting Alfred, though? I suppose it's possible, but the sheer power that would take tends towards the Walker, in my opinion.

And Kringle undid it. If I had to lay down a bet, it would be on the faeries. Maybe I'm falling for misdirection.

I recently watched a lot of youtube videos where Jim was promoting Brief Cases. In one of them, he said he would be done in August or something and in another he said September. He explained that he needs to have a space he can kick people out of to be able to write and that he doesn't (didn't) have that. He also explained that he's building a house and it should have been built a long time ago.

There are other videos in which he talks about his kitchen in the new house, so the house may or may not be done now.

Here's the most recent posting on the forum (I think):
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OZJiv_GT-Jc

It was from June 9, 2018.  I think it was transcribed, and Raidem posted the transcribed version.

11:18  Goodman Grey spin off sounds confirmed to me.  He is also excited because Goodman is so old that he can bounce around time like on the Highlander TV series/movies.  Also can recycle characters in some of the stories.  Will be called Monster LLC.  "When you're in trouble you need a hero.  When you're in real trouble you need a monster.  He's a monster for higher".
I don't know if it's the most recent video.
