DF Spoilers / *Spoilers* Bigfoot On Campus
« on: June 05, 2018, 05:18:55 PM »
Hi all, just finished reading Bigfoot on Campus in Brief Cases (only that far in, please no spoilers for any of the other stories!). The anthology it was originally published in was a nightmare to get hold of in the UK so I never read it until now. I'm sure this will have been discussed but can't find anything using the search function.

SPOILERS FOR BIGFOOT ON CAMPUS AHEAD

Why wasn't Connie's Hunger killed the first time she and Irwin were *ahem* intimate? It's been a while since I read Blood Rites but wasn't it outright stated that if a Wamp-to-be had sex with the person they were truly in love with, it would kill their Hunger before it ever fed? Harry certainly believed that the two of them were in love. Is it just an error, or am I missing something?

Thanks!

Right now I am working my way thru Sue Grafton's, may she RIP, A-Y series. Also Patricia Briggs' Mercy Thompson series, Linda Castillo's series, Jude Deaxuer, sorry for spelling, and my cozy mystery books.

The Mercy Thompson series is, in my opinion, the most consistently well written urban fantasy series I've tried next to the DF. Fleshed out characters, great plots, and best of all tons of books to read until Peace Talks

DF Spoilers / Re: The Well of Demonreach and the White Council?

It seems like the position of Warden of Demonreach might predate the WC as we know it too. Considering when Harry mentions "the wardens" and Demonreach tells him "First there was one, now there are many". That seems to imply the wardens in the WC were named for The Warden.

DF Spoilers / Re: Dog Men Release Q&A Suggestions

Well, I have one I've been waiting for years to ask. Since I live in Germany, the chance never came up. My question needs a little set-up, so please bear with me. ^^

"Over the last four books, the urgency of the plot and the intensity of the relationships between the characters have all accelerated considerably.  Due to your writing policy of having most of an entire year pass between books, however, all those elements have had to be put on hold for Harry between each of those books, leading to a series of reasons why he can’t contact his friends for a full year. You broke with that mold at the end of Skin Game, with Harry being in a position where he is with friends and family and apparently free to act without too many constraints upon him.

My question is: Going forward, how are you going to resolve this tension between having both an accelerated plot and intensified character interactions and your policy of the one year gap between books, without losing crucial character scenes and plot elements to the time periods between each book?"

Apologies if I'm misunderstanding your question, but I'm reading this as in-story years between books, rather than book release dates? If that's the case I'm pretty sure we have confirmation that Peace Talks only takes place 3 months after Skin Game so no need for a contrived reason why Harry hasn't been doing anything for a year.

DF Spoilers / Re: Changes and the Curse that....
« on: February 26, 2018, 01:19:33 PM »
Changes and the Curse that gave people a glimpse of the future....  People around the globe got a glimpse of unimaginable destruction that could not be stopped.

Do we know that the visions they got were prophetic? I don't have the book to hand but seem to recall there was a common theme of children dying and pregnant women were most affected? I always assumed that was a symbolic representation of the "family" that was the Red Court dying because of a bloodline curse and was caused by the dispersion of their magical energy, not necessarily a glimpse into a possible future.

More likely the runes allow it to be used as a conduit for magical energy, as opposed to just a pretty, pointy stick. Same for his staff. There's also the investment of energy and emotion into the actual carving which gives it an affinity to Harry and his magic. The runes are attuned to the way Harry views magic, much like Carlos's Olmec theme to his glove in White Night.

Plus there wouldn't be much need for him to get the Word of Kemmler if he *was* Kemmler.

Thoroughly enjoyed this one, although it was midnight in the UK when I remembered it was out but of course I had to stay up and read it.

Somebody must ask Jim about the backstory to this one

That's a really interesting point.

Part of me wants to think Mac is Tam Lin, like many others have speculated on.  And in the story in my head, Tam Lin was the WK for the previous WQ, and was freed by his true love on Halloween.  Then he had a daughter with his true love, and that daughter later became Mab.  Mab keeps her father alive, as a last link to her mortality.

But I also sometimes think Mac is Merlin Emrys, who had a child (Mab) with Nimue.  And then his daughter became the WQ.  And Mab keeps her father alive, as a last link to her mortality.

Basically, I think Mac is Mab's father, and I'll sell out to any theory that can work that into it.

Oh I hadn't heard the Mac as Tam Lin theory before, I quite like that (not sure I'm buying into him being Mab's dad though ;) )

Tenuous support for that idea could come from the fact that one of the biggest pieces of dialogue we've ever had from Mac was in response to Harry telling him about Maggie. Since the myth of Tam Lin often features the young woman returning pregnant, maybe in the Dresdenverse this fatherhood was what caused Mac to embark upon discarding the Winter Knight mantle.

Quote from CD: "Something like this will test you like nothing else" Mac said "You're going to find out who you are, Harry. You're going to find out which principles you'll stand by to your death- and which lines you'll cross."

Certainly evokes images of Mac going on some kind of quest to discard the mantle. Food for thought, at least.
