Calendar Event Discussion / Re: Jim in Chicago (Skokie), IL - June 4
« on: April 08, 2014, 05:34:49 AM »
Soooo...
About 5 of us will be meeting for this signing. I am wondering if anyone else would be interested in a gathering before or after the signing?
The bookstore is right near/in a shopping center, so finding a restaurant shouldn't be an issue.
If enough people are interested I can work on a more organized or at least some kind of plan.
I know it would be awesome to meet more forumites!
Just let me know and we'll make it happen.

I'll post more info as we get closer. :)

« on: March 16, 2014, 08:44:30 PM »
I was wandering through Goodreads and saw an "expected publication" date of Aug 7, 2014.
Any info on how accurate this might be?

Edit by Priscellie:

We have a release date! September 29th, 2015!

DFRPG / Re: Fate Core made Buzzfeed...
« on: December 11, 2013, 05:35:10 AM »
It was less about the article than it's inclusion in the list, that's all. If nothing else people might look it up. There were more "successful" kickstarters that never delivered. It wasn't really an evaluation as much as it is advertising. I'm always happy to see it anywhere that has fairly large audience.

It was part of the top Biggest Kickstarter Wins list, but still a great way to get more players!!!

Please post whatever you have!
I like seeing what other groups create and read the story of their game.  8)

DFRPG / Re: A Good Introduction to New DFRPG Players?
« on: July 28, 2013, 10:32:16 PM »
The first chapter of Blood Rites is a personal fav....

But I also might suggest using Our World as an introduction. AAA Wizardry is the short story at the very front. Then there is Chapter One, "Old World Order" which is  a concise description of the world before it gets into the various characters and such. It might help and doesn't need everyone to buy a novel or whatever.

DFRPG / Re: Dice Roller
« on: April 17, 2013, 11:50:44 PM »
We've been using Rolz for a couple years for our game without many issues. It has been very reliable and easy.
Use the same name for the room all the time and it will keep a log of the room. (Check the top right screen.)

We all log in, and then use another chat room for the game that also has an archive option.
We've also used Roll20 for the game AND rolling.
Have fun....

DFRPG / Re: Organizing an DF RPG Online Game
« on: March 26, 2013, 11:16:28 PM »

We have run our game in a chatroom for a couple years. We use one that archives posts so we have a game record and use another for rolls and general chat. We can see the rolls which are posted to the game room. It is dependent on a pre-set game time, however. I suppose we could run it real time, and just keep the room open all the time, but it really is hard to play without some OOC chat and discussion as we go along.

There is another site roll20: http://roll20.net  which has a few chat/skype options and supports different game systems. I'm not sure about notifications or mobile apps but you can upload maps, rooms, etc. that everyone can see and use.  Log in, play the game, and roll all in the same room and it can be open all the time.

You can use this forum to post a game, and set up notifications so you can be alerted every time someone posts a reply in the game thread, but you'd have to use an external roller which makes it a bit cumbersome if you want a play at anytime sort of thing.

Were you thinking of something more instant-play like?

DFRPG / Kickstarter for Torment: Tides of Numenera
« on: March 24, 2013, 08:40:04 PM »
I just wanted to share...
Patrick Rothfuss posted a link to this as he will be participating:

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/torment-tides-of-numenera

"A story-driven CRPG crafted in the tradition of Planescape™: Torment & set in the world of Monte Cook's Numenera."

It seems like there MIGHT be a few people that would be interested in this style of CRPG.
12 days left to kick in, or just make a note and try to get it when it is done.

Thats all!

Site Suggestions & Support / Re: how to use the search
« on: February 17, 2013, 12:47:43 AM »
You know, I never had this issue which is why I think I was a little confuzzled!
I used to get pages of matches for things, but I haven't used search in awhile.

I wonder if this is a bug or a new parameter.
It is a little odd. Perhaps the mods know more....

But the apropiate room is this thread, right?
To complain about not liking the change or discuss how mean people moved my toys on an internet forum and ruined everything!!! *stomp*  >:(
No, it is not.

It is the Site Suggestions and Support (SS&S) area despite the ongoing discussion.

Since the original topic was the creation/separation of multiplying RPG's I put it here (SS&S).  I SHOULD have put it in Miscategorized Threads but I  had forgotten about the RPG section of Billy's and wasn't sure where to direct the reassignment. Should another RPG start in The Bar then the appropriate area to request a move would be the MT topic. Should the RPG get too long then the appropriate thread would be Redheaded Stepchild of Threads that Need Division.

A request was made, the mod agreed and made the change.  I'm sure a new topic on why RPG's should be moved from the RPG room back into the general discussion area would also be considered by the mods.  That would be a new topic and a new request in SS&S.

Complaining about it would probably be in The Bar under a new thread, or perhaps in The Story of Us under "Everything Sucks Today" or in PMs to the mods or each other as originally suggested. Or everyone can move on.

Whatever direction you choose, the original topic has been resolved, therefore:

Thank you for your exposition, founding member Fyrchick. I will greatly enjoy seeing your posts in the bar and the topics you start. I will be in the WEIRD thread where we have discussions, complaints, fun, and so forth. I will also enjoy seeing all the new people who will be arriving to play with us. If you have any trouble navigating the bar, please do not forget to read Dina's stickied post which kindly directs and informs no patrons about the bar in general.  :)

Thank you.  ;)
(Just to be clear I am in NO WAY a founding forum member, just of Hellfire... and a few other threads like the 'I hate Susan' thread which became something like the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand when the Great Purge was over... :P   ::) )

I'm not sure what you mean by having trouble navigating The Bar. Now that I'm not tripping over all the toys I'll be fine. I'm sure Dina's thread is a good place for newbies to start- I am not one of them, however. Feel free to greet new arrivals and direct them as appropriate. It's easy to get lost in the Fortress of Jimness if you don't have a destination.

*thinks dark storm cloudy thoughts*  >:(

Seriously?  ???
About what? Nothing happened to your games. They were moved just like every other topic that is posted in the wrong place. They have their own sub-board which means you can get to them directly from the home page. If the issue is the suddenness of the move or lack of notification then it's unfortunate but not malicious. If this truly affects your life in a negative way feel free to discuss it at greater length with the mods. But please do it in the appropriate room or by PM.

The Bar is just like a bar. It is intended as a basic gathering place to talk about anything that wasn't appropriate for another subforum or thread. Everyone is welcome and you fit in by just wanting to be there.

If you walk in and find half the people in there are dressed in crazy costumes and talking about things that make absolutely no sense to you and also pretending they are some character, and you have to go to each and every table (new topic)  to find simple conversation then frankly it isn't so welcoming.

It was one thing when it was just one or two RPGs but it is getting to the point that all of the general topics are relegated to the second page of threads behind active and locked RPG topics. Also, the RPGs already had a sub-forum that was made for the non-DFRPG games. It is not about who likes what or prefers what. There is A LOT of content on this forum, and keeping it accessible to everyone means keeping organized and putting things where they belong. It would be no different if people started talking about the books and spoilers in the Bar... it is not the right place and they would be moved to the appropriate place (like a lot of other threads, not just the game ones.)

I'm not sure where the I understand the reaction to moving some topics. They were not in the right place, regardless of how long they have been there. They were moved, not destroyed.
Billy's Game Den/RPG night is 4 subs down from The Bar.
http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/board,38.0.html
There all the games can live and grow and not be interrupted by general topics, in effect making them easier to find. They will also live longer there. Long threads can be snipped when you feel it is necessary. This way people can talk in one space and play in another. Perhaps one of the 8 regular RPGers can be a bartender there to take care of these things.

Finally, as one of the founding members of Hellfire (along with Rashad and Aine, not Persephone who took over when Rashad left), I can say that it is nothing like it used to be.  It's origins were lost in the Great Purge. It is now a game and not a hangout. It might have been the heart of the bar at one time, but I don't recognize it. If anyone should be melancholy or upset it's me (or Enjorous, or Mystic or a couple other people who were a founding Gods too.) But it's a just a topic, technically. The heart of the forum is the members, wherever they happen to hang out.

It's time for Hellfire to retire to Billy's and for some of the more attentive members to make a new "Bar." One that is OOC, and a great place to talk and bond and wander and complain and just hang out.

(And thanks for being as active as you are. It's one of the things that keeps this forum a good place- just now it's a place with better signage and acoustics.)

I never knew there were suppose to be in the Game Den. In fact, I remember having asked the same long ago, and being told that Hellfire were the heart of the bar, so to speak.
I completely understand the logic, but I think it is a bad idea in the long term. Those threads become hiperlong, and as they are cleaned every week is not so bad, but if they are going to be there for a month, they would become very heavy.

Well, Hellfire used to be a lot different. Its current incarnation is nothing like when it started.
The threads can be split at a certain number of replies, so length isn't an issue, and the game area can take the archived threads.
The (non DFRPG) RPG stuff really belongs in the game board since it's a game and not really general discussion.
