DFRPG / Re: "Official" Perspective on Lawbreaking
« on: March 15, 2011, 08:30:31 PM »
Chad, on the other hand, is personally uncomfortable with the idea that the edge cases, seeing them being low on or absent of intent. In his games, the universe would let you off the hook this time.

FWIW, the only thing we have in book-canon that's even close to an accidental breaking of the Laws is Harry blowing up Bianca's party, and scorched human remains were found later. It's possible they were already dead, and it's possible they weren't. We don't know.

But since Harry didn't seem to pick up Lawbreaker there, that's my rationalization why I tend to be more lenient on accidents.

So:

* I forzare you into the path of an oncoming car I didn't know was coming? Universe grants a pass.

* I forzare you off the roof of a tall building and you become street pizza? Lawbreaker, baby.

DFRPG / [GB] Stat Out a Proton Pack
« on: May 12, 2010, 12:11:27 AM »
Ignore Hexing issues: assume that the Ghostbusters' proton packs and traps are magic items, not technology. (They're enchanted/focus/Items of Power, whatever, ok? -- immune to hexery.)

How would they work under DFRPG rules?

If anyone wants to additionally contribute stats for the Ghostbusters and associates, I will not complain. ;)

Very nice. But I'm also looking for stunts. ;)

(There's a reason for a specific marginalia I wrote.)

Also, I'd like to see statting for Gracie Law, Wang Chi, the 3 Storms, Egg Shen, and Lo-Pan himself.

Can the DFRPG handle it? I think it can!

Jack Burton?

Is that Kurt Russel's character from Big Trouble In Little China?

(lo-pan) INDEED! (/lo-pan)

Who wants to take a crack at statting Jack Burton (and possibly his allies and enemies) under the DFRPG rules?

Of course, then they'd have to make real stats for some of the powerful monsters and wizards, instead of just saying Plot Device.

*golf clap*

DFRPG / Re: Harry's summoning circle
« on: April 21, 2010, 01:19:22 PM »
Harry's circle used to be silver. I think he even had an iron and silver one at some point.
The new one from the fae smith that costs $5K is from Changes and is new.

IIRC, it was copper, got upgraded to silver, went back to being copper again, then we got the deluxe version in CHANGES.

I think the Cu-Ag-Cu up/downgrade was a Jimslip.

DFRPG / Re: The First Law Question.
« on: April 20, 2010, 11:08:58 PM »
For the record, I'm not trying to get out of anything (and tend to agree with you that doing so is annoying), and would never play the stated character, I'm just a firm believer in a consistent and specific interpretation of how the Laws work, and will continue to bring that perspective to discussions.

One interesting interpretation might be that the Laws are absolutely true immutable axioms of the cosmos, no matter how people interpret them into gray areas.

So, yeah, that would mean that Harry picked up an LB stunt for killing people in GP, and another for raising Sue from the dead, and what not.

But that would ALSO mean any pre- or retrocognition spell grants an LB stunt for "swimming against the currents of time."

How sick would it be if an NPC said to a PC, "You want to know the name of who's after you? The Outsider known as She Who Hovers Above" and the PC gets instantly smacked with an LB stunt.

THINK ABOUT IT.

(Me, I'm psyched that the LoMs can be interpreted various different ways by people -- IC and OOC -- and that has a mechanical effect.)

Thanks! I'll add an interjection in there ala "—and possibly other faiths as well—" soon as I get a chance.  (I mean, they are Swords of the Cross, so I get why it was said that way, but the OP is absolutely right, and I think they're more a focus for faith in the White God in its many forms.)

Also, Sanya is descended from Saladin (IIRC), who was definitely not a Christian.

I concur.

DFRPG / Re: What counts as Cold Iron?
« on: April 18, 2010, 09:05:38 AM »
I won't get into real life stuff (because who cares, it is a game).

I am utterly convinced, in real world folklore, that people have utterly misinterpreted the phrase "cold iron".

"Cold iron burns faeries" is the basic folklore.

People have thus tried to figure out what "cold iron" means -- is it cold-worked iron, does it include steel, must it be meteoric iron, etc.

I think people are overthinking.

Remember, in folklore, one can thwart the faeries by turning your clothes inside-out. So, "cold iron" is just a reversal. That is, I read it so:

"Cold (room-temperature) iron burns faeries (as if it were red-hot)."

In the Dresdenverse, it's way more expanded than that, but I think starting from the idea that all iron and steel are poison to the fae is a good way to go.

I'm curious to see how you'd stat up Shagnasty, Binder, Binder's Buddies, and (from CHANGES)
(click to show/hide)
.

(CHANGES things spoiler-blocked until you get a chance to read it.)

Aha - now I'm thinking it's a reference to the limited assistance Lily promised The Merlin while at Molly's trial, since she did refer to the White Council as "allies" at that point.  Guess Summer got tired of the Red Court's incursions into their territory.

Bingo. This was the intent.
