DFRPG / Re: Too silly for city faces?
« on: November 30, 2010, 05:20:22 PM »
Not too silly if it makes sense in the city setting.  What does an Extreme Enviromentalist want?  Why would ninjas be involved?  Is it a plot from Japan to take over New Orleans as part of the rebuilding effort after Katrina years ago?  Has someone hired the ninjas and leopards to remove some high muckety muck that is building super tall buildings with no concern for the environment?  Are there mob bosses involved trying to restore the casinos?  Maybe Yakuza are fighting with Mafia in the background?  Throw in a shaman with native american or aztec or maya influence to have more fun with sacrifices to appease the land that has been ruined by businesses.  Maybe voodoo or santaria is involved indirectly.  Maybe Panther Clan is moving in to power vacuum left by previous shapeshifter clan that was severely hurt by Katrina or other.  Maybe some dead have risen because some ancient evil was buried in the marsh eons ago only to be freed, and some one in the know wants the dead / ancient evil put back in place and hired the Panther Clan to take care of it.  Random thoughts are running down, hope these have helped inspire you.

DFRPG / Re: Thaumaturgy question (another newbie!)
« on: November 29, 2010, 02:35:48 PM »
I am a newbie also, but hope I can provide at least a direction to answering your question.  Some physical responses associated with telling a lie are increased heart rate, dilation of pupils, increased respiration, change in posture, and change in vocal patterns.  If someone were able to detect these minute changes in the person being questioned, that would not be an invasion into their mind using magic.  I would think that Supernatural Sense (YS 165) would cover these possibilities.  To give this temporary ability to someone, I looked at YS 265 Meneuvers and Contests and Conflicts.  Assume the person receiving the Supernatural Sense is going to allow it to happen (Resistance +0).  Maybe 2 shifts to give a -1 Refresh power.  5 Shifts to go from instant length of time to 15 minutes.  I come up with 7 shifts.  Minor comment though, during those 15 minutes the person receiving the Supernatural Sense aspect will be inundated with sensory overload as he/she is not used to the extra input, so normal talking may sound very loud, normal lighting may be extremely bright, etc. unless they have had this done to them several times before in which case they would be used to it.  Hope this helps, and I hope I am target with my numbers.

DFRPG / Autumn Magic
« on: November 27, 2010, 07:05:54 PM »
I have a PC that wants to be a knight of a "fallen" court where he is trying to gather up the 4 treasures of the Sidhe (Tuatha de Danaan) to restore the Autumn Court to its former power.  Part of this is coming up with a set of magic similar to how Seelie Magic and Unseelie Magic are laid out in Sponsored Magic that may be used as an element for evocation.  Spell effects I was thinking could include:

Fairy Paths (travel between mortal realm and Never Never, or mortal realm to mortal realm through Never Never, or different areas in Never Never is easier for the Autumn Court)
Veils/Glamours/Illusions (easy to disguise your appearance, hide things from those without the Sight)
Weather (predicting, causing, changing)
Silver Tongue (charming ways that increase social standing or presence or ease of casting spells)

Not sure of a possible 5th one, and not totally sure of what I have listed so far.  Ideas, suggestions, alterations please?  Have others already come up with something like this and can share, or point me to a link of an existing post?  Thank you.

DFRPG / Re: Summer Knight
« on: November 27, 2010, 05:06:37 AM »
I like the idea of him having a sword of the Summer Knight, then somehow (insert major story line here) he is also given the opportunity to wield one of the Swords of the Cross, and he has to use powers from the Summer Court and the SotC in order to overcome some major evil thingy (maybe winter court evilness coupled with a mortal sorcerer raising demons or forcing fae to do his will).  Perhaps the two swords merge in to one for a brief period of time, if there are no conflicts and he adheres to both tenets, and should one tenet be broken, he will not be strong enough to defeat the evil.

Interesting idea...maybe the shaman would know the true name of the spirit of hunger that hunts aka panther spirit.

Thanks for helping me brainstorm and understand things better, and no worries about rushed, I forget...what was I talking about?  For those still reading this strand, I would still be interested in other answers such as the transformation required maybe for a 3 zone restaurant, or an illusion, or a permanent portal approach into never never, which would be fun to see what came out too.

For taking it out mentally, 3 (to overcome 2 mental base) + 2 mild + 4 medium + 6 severe + 8 extreme, um 23...
As for the overcome Mediocre conviction, why 5?
Different possibility, apply 6 shifts to get 20 skill points and 6 refresh, or 7 shifts for 25 skill points and 7 refresh, or 8 shifts etc.?

Yes this is the same shaman I asked you to stat up.  I am not sure if I overvalued the conjuration, but to get all of the instincts and special abilities created out of ectoplasm to last for more than say 15 minutes, shrug.  I would love to see someone else's take on how to arrive at the number of shifts required for skills and refresh "powers".

It is for an NPC, I am just trying to enhance my understanding of how the different magic things work, because half of what I may do one of my PCs may turn around and ask "How did you do that?"  and I want to be able to give a metagame answer that makes sense in case they want to try something similar in the future.

That would be cool, but how do you set up a permanent portal thingy then?  Thought nature fought against those things.  Not familiar with the Demense spell/idea.  Wow, great ideas, still would like to know about the actual transformation, the illusion/glamour idea, and now the Demense idea.

This is close enough to a panther.  If we use Conjuration skill, my home approach to this is +7 shifts for medium animate, then 1 shift for every skill and 2 shifts per refresh point, so

High Concept: Mountain Lion
Other:
Silent Killer
Scaredy Cat

Skills:

Superb: Stealth,                              1 x 5 shifts
Great: Athletics, Fists,                      2 x 4 shifts
Good: Endurance, Intimidate,             2 x 3 shifts
Fair: Alertness, Survival,                   2 x 2 shifts
Average: Discipline, Might, Presence,  3 x 1 shift

Powers:

Claws [-1]                                      2 x 1 shift
Echoes of the Beast [-1]                   2 x 1 shift
Inhuman Strength [-2]                      2 x 2 shifts
Inhuman Speed [-2]                         2 x 2 shifts

Total Refresh: -6

Stress:

Mental: OO
Physical: OOOO
Social: OOO
Armor: 0.

So 45 shifts to summon the "panther" using conjuration.  If we add another 2 shifts, we would get a handful, 4 shifts would give us maybe a dozen, 6 shifts would give us enough to fill central park if I remember correctly.  So call it 49 shifts to summon 12 panthers, again using my homegrown method to calculate the cost based on what I remember from conjuration and what I came up with earlier.  Hmmm...add in 12 shifts for lasting a mortal lifetime?  Something similar could be done for the apes, snakes, and birds.  Maybe 244 shifts as an approximation to get 1 dozen panthers, 1 dozen apes, 2-4 dozen snakes, and probably 4 dozen birds.

Maybe the transformation is done first, then the conjuration.   So, how would the transformation work?  I really want something permanent, not an illusion at this point.  However, now that you have my curiousity aroused, what would it be for an illusion?

DFRPG / Transform Cafe into Forest
« on: November 24, 2010, 09:28:44 PM »
One possibility I see in the future of my game is that an Aztec Shaman will want to avenge his sister's death by luring the PCs into a jungle terrain with animals and so forth.  There is a restaurant called the Rainforest Cafe that some of you may have heard of, just imagine some real plants, lots of plastic trees, a waterfall, fake stuffed animals that occasionally move and emit animal noises, live fish in cylinders, amid the eating area, bar, and gift shop.

If the shaman wanted to change the Rainforest Cafe into a "real" jungle with "real" animals for a mortal lifetime, assuming he was going to perform ritual sacrifices in the restaurant to accomplish this, how would he accomplish it?  Transformation magic through thaumaturgy I assume.  Would he have to have Sponsored magic and ring up a huge debt then pay it off with the sacrifices, or could he do it "on his own" using the sacrifices?  By the way, do you think a reasonable "size" for the restaurant would be 12 zones (3 zones by 4 zones?)  Would the effect start in one zone and spread, or would we need to add 24 shifts (2 per zone expansion, no books with me right now)?  How many shifts of power do you think it would take to accomplish this?

DFRPG / Re: Triggered Ward question
« on: November 23, 2010, 12:30:03 PM »
I would think it would be two different wards.  Add 2 shifts for a condition to trigger the wall ward.  Given the size you are talking about, it would probably need 2 more shifts to cover that much area as well.  Oh, and don't forget to add more shifts to make the ward last longer than until next sunrise, even though it hasn't been triggered, the construct needs to last for a while.

DFRPG / Looking for ideas
« on: November 21, 2010, 12:55:08 PM »
I have a basic idea of an archeologist that discovers an artifact or deciphers some runes that possess him into setting fires with human sacrifices at specific locations to eventually summon a demon, however, that seems almost too cliche to me.  Anyone have alternate story idea(s) that involve arson?
