DF Spoilers / Re: Does anyone think Harry isn’t the original Merlin?

I ... guess this is a further riff on "Sword of Truth" (the sundial statue "Life"?)

I'm pretty sure that Jim pretty-rigorously avoids politics (as Harry, he denigrates all politicians equally, just as politicians, without ever calling out specific policies).

And your own remarks in themselves seem to be straying well-into the explicitly-disallowed territory... even if you're "just making a joke" or "forgot the /s" or whatever.

I don't think so, nothing political in referring to other fantasy series, and the Dresden Files is all about war, peace, good, and evil... You really can't discuss the Dresdenverse without getting into those things, the world has been thus since the beginning of time..  In my opinion no one's toes politically or religiously have been stepped on..

Jim says Mirror!Harry is allied with Mavra; and that he summons alt!Harry's to die in his stead, when his own foes have him cornered and are about to kill him.

Which is really weird, context is everything, it's just from we know of Mavra, what we have seen, what we know of Harry, I cannot see Harry allied with Mavra under any circumstances.  As I said, context is important, because for even that Harry to do that he had to have been screwed up long before we meet him in the series.. Not saying there isn't something so dire that he must, but then you have to wonder if instead of a Star Trek Mirrormirror scenario, it will turn out to be more of a Skin Game double, double cross...

I don't think we know the form(s) of Justine's mental illness, no (noting that multiple-diagnoses are very much a thing).  It's not clear to me that Jim does, himself.

I doubt Jim will specifically write it as "hallucinations" though -- that really muddies the whole "free will" issue, which is thematically-important to the Dresdenverse.

Why would it?  You think that Nemesis cares about "free will?"  And though not by Nemesis, but by one of the Fallen, Lasciel was perfectly happy to use a hallucination, i.e. Shelia to seduce Harry into taking up a coin.  The taking of the coin itself might be an act of free will, but getting him to that point goes against his free will, as we saw Harry's reaction once he realized it.  Why wouldn't Nemesis use Justine's mental illness to produce hallucinations to fool her into accepting an Outsider take over of her person? Do you think Justine was really thinking clearly when she agreed to that?

Tho I do notice this accounting of the situation is 2nd-hand, so it may be misunderstood (or even active disinformation by the Rampires).

I don't necessary _expect_ to see this in Twelve Months.  But I think it would be interesting it JB went that route.

Imagine if on the other time line, because of Harry's choice, the Red Court managed to get enough of an advantage to break the White Council.  So there's either no Council over there, or it's weak and in disarray and can't fulfill its purpose.

It could serve as an illustration to Harry why the Council is so important, why even his allies like Eb and Injun Joe and so on refuse to risk disrupting it.  Seeing a world without the Council might give Harry a little different perspective on this world.

Yes, everyone is so excited about the prospect of seeing an "evil Harry,"  but Jim has been there done that with an "
evil Bob."  I agree with you if it is about Harry making the wrong choice at the end or towards the end of Grave Peril, it's the consequences of that that is important.  I think back to what Shiro told Harry about his decisions at and after the party and after that led to the Red Court declaring war on the White Council before they were ready to fight that war.  So many things flow from that decision, the duel, Shiro's death and asking Harry to be the custodian of the Sword of Faith, Eb dropping a well aimed satellite, the conception of little Maggie, the wiping out of the entire Red Court..

It's not the sex itself that helps the condition, it's the feeding.  Sex is just bait and the channel the Raiths like to use to get the energy.  They can feed in other ways, like Skavis and Malvora do.  (IIRC, JB once said that in theory a WV could feed on the warm and fuzzy feeling from petting a kitten, though he added that the WV would probably sparkle if they did it, so he might have been joking about that).

The White Vampires feed on emotional energy, which is also life energy.  Justine in her manic state generates too much positive energy, in the depressed state too much negative.  The emotions are the energy and vice versa.  When Thomas feeds on Justine, it takes away those excess energies, leaving her more or less 'normal'...as long as he doesn't take too much or too often, of course.  In that respect, a manic depressive is the perfect prey for a WV with enough self control to limit their take, because they can be fed on without hurting them, and even to their benefit.

(Ignoring the potential issue of supersex addiction, of course.)

And yeah, once Thomas couldn't feed on her any more, one would expect that she would either revert over time to her manic/depressive state, or have to use medication to control it.  Which might be where Nemesis got its hooks in.

Do we know for sure that Justine's illness was manic depression? As we know there are more than one type of mental illness.  If Justine suffered from a form of schizophrenia for example, hallucinations possibly could be the perfect avenue for Nemesis to enter. Can you imagine if Justine was hearing voices for example how easy it would be for Nemesis to become one of those voices?

And because there is a confluence in Chicago -- all of the same "dark powers" that Harry noted are still coming to bear, there -- I think Michael will more-often be Guided to Murphy's aid, than he originally was in the first few books.

Or not, Michael wasn't guided to her aid in the first few books..  I go back to the original assumption that everyone seems to have, and since I don't keep up with them I don't keep up very well with WOJs, is the other Harry is an evil counter point to our Harry.. If nothing if changed because of that, shrug of shoulders, Harry in the other universe is evil..  However I don't think so.. If one goes by "It's a Wonderful Life," all matter of things go wrong because our hero was never born... One prime example is at the age of 10 he saved his brother, who grew up to in the Medal of Honor because he saved hundreds of men on board a ship if I remember correctly... If he hadn't been saved, then not just he would have died, but the hundreds that he saved would have died, and maybe hundreds more children who would have done great things were never born.... It goes on and on like that..  It isn't about the now evil Harry, it's about the wrong choice that was made that really screws things up in both timelines.

DF Spoilers / Re: The Erl King a Vassal of Winter?

One can be closely allied with, but at the same time not be the subject of..

Here is the definition of the term vassel;

Quote
vassal. noun. vas·sal ˈvas-əl. : a person in the Middle Ages who received protection and land from a lord in return for loyalty and service.

This really doesn't fit Kringle nor the Erl King, neither really needs land from or the protection of Mab.  Though they have both been loyal to a degree to her and of some service to her, in my opinion the term ally is better applied to both.

It's in the chapter immediately following the one where Susan dies; Harry talks about the fallout from the destruction of the entire Red Court; so, not in-the-moment stuff or stuff Harry personally saw/experienced; but Harry telling us about things that he heard of, broadly.

That doesn't mean anything as far as something "human" remaining in the fully turned.  Bianca the main example we have was full
RCV, nothing human about her, but she appeared human to the eye and could be very charming, so could others in the world, but that doesn't mean that anything human remained of them...

Remember:  at the point of divergence, it's the exact same Murphy, with the exact same attitudes.  So yes, there may be some suspicion/distrust, just as she wasn't yet to the point of trusting Harry.  Also remember:  Murphy doesn't need to "call Michael for help" in order for Michael to show up via his own guidance.

You are assuming that nothing around Harry changes, that all the people around him remain the same..  That's the mistake I think, because Harry's choice and his change in this other universe doesn't happen in a vacuum.

So long as he wears the Kringle mantle, he's subject to Winter.
But he appears able to put it on and take it off at will.

More like an associate of Winter or with Winter, I doubt that Kringle would take a direct order from Mab for example, or that she would give one.. I think they actually agree on a lot of stuff, I also think because of his multiple mantles that he is way too complex to be a subject.

RCV's are inhuman.  They're like insects that have a parasite eat its way out of them, killing them.  The half-turned Red is still human, but the full Rampire kills the host during birth.

I think you just made my case,

but the full Rampire kills the host during birth.

Dead, is D-E-A-D,  nothing remains of the host..

I believe that there is an old WOJ that states that Lara's control of the White Court is slipping because Papa Raith is becoming more unstable. We know that some of Twelve Months will be dealing with the White Court. I think it is conceivable that there will be a loss of control of Papa Raith and Harry will have to help Lara set herself up as the White Queen. She will no longer be ruling from the shadows. This could dovetail nicely with a hunt for Outsiders in the White Court that other posters have mentioned.

No hint of that so far, however we haven't heard a word from the other branches of the White Court since "White Night," so it is possible that the Raith family will find itself on the outside looking in.  Lara may find herself with her father incapacitated, Thomas and Justine now gone, isolated and she may have to turn to Harry, and not from her usual position of strength.. Or with the help of whatever is protecting him, Papa Raith makes a huge come back, plus perhaps many in the family didn't like the fact that she chose to fight against the Fomor in the battle for Chicago.  Then there is Toot and Za'Gard, they haven't forgotten their treatment at the hands of the White Court, I doubt they will remain passive in all of this.

Michael doesn't often introduce himself as a "Holy Knight," though:  he just steps up to help.
And Murphy actually has amazingly-good "people-sense."
It'd make good sense in both Doylist & Watsonian terms.

If Michael is guided to aid her in time of need -- and I allege that (in an Evil!Harry universe) this is likely to happen -- Murphy will take the help, and (cautiously) begin trusting Michael, as he becomes a good source of supernatural intel & an ally in protecting Chicago.

Will she?  Or will she take the attitude that whatever it is, it is a law enforcement issue so some civilian carpenter can butt out?

It would be interesting to see how Kringle interacts with the Mothers.  JB said at one point that pretty much everybody in Faerie is subordinate to the Mothers, but is Odin?  I mean he's not exactly 'of Faerie' in his own identity...

I doubt that he is because he is a "god" in his own right.
