DF Spoilers / Re: so ... soulgaze? the Sight?
« on: December 18, 2024, 01:13:38 AM »
I am inclined to agree with this.  As for WOJs, yes, I know he is the author and should know what he is writing.  I of course respect that and love his work.   I worry that we can get too hung up on WOJs and it sometimes spoils the pleasure of reading the story and trying to figure it out for ourselves.  Especially on something like sight verses soul gazing because it can give too much away if Jim tells us too much.  That's why I think in the stories Harry is usually pretty vague about what others see when soul gazing him!  Susan fainted, Molly felt sorry for him and wanted him to take her to bed, Eb saw anger and great talent, no word on what Thomas saw, Marcone got ideas of what he might be able to exploit, and a couple of others mentioned just not feeling afraid.. I think it is revealing that yes, Harry saw Murphy with his sight at one point in Blood Rites and saw her as an angel, that was before he made her a Holy Knight for a day, but the two of them never got around to a soul gaze, or even made a point of doing it even though they were lovers.  I wonder what Murphy's take on Harry would have been had she been able to look really deep into him.  Having the gaze begin just as she was dying was such a tease!

Oh yes, it was terrible. Knowing that if that soulgaze had taken Harry would have remembered it all his life...and instead he will always remember the empty house. So heartbreaking.
And I agree with both of you about the fact that the wizards themselces probably are not aware of how subjective the gaze/sight is.
And yes, I have always said we have to take WoJ with some caution. For several reasons, including JB having the right to change his mind. But also, he has the right to hide some information for narrative reasons.

Yes, perhaps an example for Harry is a good explanation.

Dina, glad to hear your presentation went smoothly. Hopefully you set off a few light bulbs (with any luck, perhaps ones about transportation arrangements when Disney is in town). It has also mellowed out here, but in the opposite direction.

Thank you  :). And well, Summer is coming here. Days are moderately cool this week. I mean, the afternoons are quite warms, but the nights and early mornings are quite cooler. It is also sunny.

Also, no one wants the memory of whatever a completely gone warlock is fixed in your mind for ever. You only do it because you want to be absolutely sure you are not killing someone who has been framed or something like that. I suspect the Merlin did it because it came with the job, I can't think many people willing to do the soulgaze. Also, if there was a chance that the kid survived, it was not a good idea to have him seen your very soul.

So, soulgazes are partial, but true. So if what the Merlin sees is too horrible, is enough. It does not matter if you also love music and cartoons.

update: my part on the event went well. Thursday was another very hot day. Friday stayed working at home, so I stayed away of the Disney shenaningans. Today, we will see. At least, temperature is nicer.

I agree the two-way street is the main difference, but I believe there is some sort of WoJ about  soulgazes being also subjective and also changing according to the moment that happened. Ebenezer probably did not see the same thing that Butters would see if he soulgazed Harry after BG. I am not sure about the different senses. Pehaps Ramirez always hears music with soulgazing someone. A music he cannot forget.

I have wondered some of those things since the beginning.
I have the (unproved) idea that yes, there are wizards who are more insightful, as you said. Just like Harry is very good at fire magic, I think he is good at Sight and soulgazes.
I wish there were more talking about that in the books.
And, I need to say it, I want to see what people sees when they soulgaze Harry.

Oooh. I am sorry about your husband. I mean, part of the problem was, of course, that he waited so much. My hubby is like that and even worse, but I won't tell more details here. Only that I understand you and I applaud you for saying "enough". I  wish your husband a good recovery and if you refrain from the "told you so" you really love him  :) :)

New old sofa!! I will put a sweater in it. For some reason, I always found the idea of a sweater casually laying over a sofa so homey and cozy.

Today is a very hot day. To make things worse, we had an event at the university. All the research groups in our Department made a sort of meeting, it is something we do every five years or so. A person from each group does a presentation, telling the others what they are working in and with what methods. Results are better left out, as interested people can find the papers, but the methods can light a buln in someone else. By the way, I did the lecture for my group. But the thing is that the lectures were on a big classrom with no air conditioning! (due to malfunction, not the lack of i). And the place was very hot.

Oh, and we are struggling with Disney  :) The thing is, the authorities of the university decided a couple of years ago that they could rent part of our campus (the one normally used for sports) to events, for a nice sum, of course. And so, we have several days of an event, called Disney's magic Christmas or something like that. And due to that even, the buses stop entering (and leaving) the campus at 16:00. So annoying. Luckily today I left before 14:00 even, because I left just after the meeting I just told you about. But the Disney event will have functions every day from a week or so.

Traditionally, 100% means that Jim announces "the end". Which is actually the beginning of the publishing time (i mean, it is when it is no longer Jim's responsibility but the publisher's).

Regen! I've missed you so much.
I am sorry you were ill and I am glad you are feeling better. Hope you get super well soon.
Those birds are lovely! I am glad you could save one, sorry it left you so many "gifts". You are a good person for spending so much time to save one. I am sad for the other ones, but Nature is hard. And it is good that Lisa is better too. I imagine with Winter coming the kittens will rather stay at home.

Hubby told me about your exploits in Duo, so congratulations! And I think what you said about Norwegian makes a lot of sense. I once saw a video about oral Norwegian, and oh my God. That reminds me I've been watching a couple of videos about the Korean alphabet, which is, by design, super easy to learn. It is a very interesting story. Korean used Chinese characters, but the grammar was different, so it was super complicated.  And only a few people could read. But then, a Korean king decided to create a new alphabet that everyone could learn super fast.

The Hunger Demon never touches any body, it feeds through the host.
True, but still, Thomas would not be really touching Mab. At least, that is what I think. I have been arguing for years that Mab could not have Harry's baby because they do not do real physical sex.

119
Mira, I really not think that Thomas is powerful enough to kill Mab. Also, remember the sex scene of Harry accepting the job is something...mystical, i don't know. Harry did not have physical sex with Mab, I think. His body was still laying with a broken back. So I imagine if Thomas would be accepted as Winter Knight, his seduction powers and hunger would be irrelevant, because his demon would not be really touching Mab's body.

I came very late to this party, but I have a few comments I want to make.

As it was said, most white court are children of a human. I am not sure if it is possible for two white vampires to have a child, and I do not know if that child would be more or less powerful than a regular white court vampire. Also, I think Inari did kill her demon.

Justine: I do not think she was nemfected since the beginning. It would be very sad if Thomas has conceived a child with a shell body encasing Nemesis. I think Justine is still there, in her body.

Thomas being mortal enough because he was in love is a very weird statement and I am still not sure what that means. But I suspect the problem is that Harry thought the Knight had to be mortal, but in true it has to be "mortal enough". I think being in love is not the reason he is "mortal enough" but the proof that he is one. Which would imply that fae and probably red and black vampires and other things are not able to love.

Mab inability to lie is always complicated to me because I think that when she pretended to be someone else (in SK? I do not remember, when she pretended to be neighbour or something) she said a few things that were not literally true. I cannot check it now. But I do think when she said she would have offered the position to Thomas, she meant that. Thomas is a sub par choice, but he is still Margaret son and I have the feeling that is what Mab values.
