DFRPG / Potions Anyone?
« on: September 07, 2011, 02:44:06 AM »
This may be a silly question, but I didn't find anything directly related on the resource boards so...
What I would like to know is which potions have been most useful or most entertaining during play?
Also, how often do you actually spend time on the list of ingredients?

DFRPG / It didn't work? I do it again!!!
« on: March 27, 2011, 08:43:46 PM »
So…  Two player characters encounter an unknown threat and engage in combat.  The opponent appears able to shrug off their initial attacks.  One player then begins to vary his approach while still relying on the same ability. The other, proceeds to repeat the same action, over and over, evidently convinced that all he needs is the right roll and grows frustrated when this is not met with success.   What should I do?
I don’t want to stop the game to suggest that he try something else.  There is a lot of tension at this point and the other players are all caught up in the action.  Also, I don’t really feel that I should have to explain the opponent’s abilities and defenses.  I want the PC’s to figure them out on their own.

DFRPG / Gamemaster Evaluation
« on: February 18, 2011, 05:08:36 PM »
I have debated posting this, but two sessions of hostile reactions from the same player have me concerned.  What I need to know is how do other gamemasters rate their own performance?

Usually, I like to listen to my players between sessions. If they are eager to talk about what is happening, are pestering me for clues on their plans or theories, and are looking forward to the next session, then I think I am doing well.   In addition, I like to place an emphasis on role-playing: character interactions, conflict and growth, instead of simple monster slaying.  However, when I recently presented the groups True Believer with a moral dilemma – a test of Faith – the player was far from happy with me.  Ironically, other players whose characters are facing threats to their family, job or freedom all appear to be enjoying the game.
To paraphrase one player: “My character hates it, but I think it’s great.”   So… how do I know if I’m doing this right or not?

DFRPG / How to conduct a murder investigation?
« on: February 08, 2011, 12:51:17 AM »
Any suggestions on how I can conduct a murder investigation to make it more realistic for my players?

The background is as follows:
The mutilated body on a man in his mid-thirties was discovered by hikers.
The man is regestered at a local hotel. His car is still in the lot.
He came to town to see his ex -- one of the player characters.
He was seen drinking with her in the hotel bar following a local festival which they attended together.
The coroner estimates the time of death to be 20-30 hrs later.

DFRPG / Blessed Bullets???
« on: September 30, 2010, 11:12:41 PM »
Well, my players have correctly concluded that their next antagonist is demonic in nature and are making plans and preparations.  What caught me by surprise was when one of them informed me that he would bless four magazines of rounds for various firearms. ::)  I’m not sure how to respond to this.  The character is a True Believer and I have previously allowed him to bless water (making holy water) using traditional prayers.  They have also encountered a saint’s medallion and a blessed silver crucifix, so these things do exist. But, I am not sure how I want to handle the issue of bullets or other mundane (i.e. no refresh cost) weapons.
Perhaps if he wanted to get a set of etching tools and engrave the Seal of Solomon on each of them, I would find that a more reasonable idea/investment.  So, at the risk of sparking a lengthy religious debate, I don't need to know so much where God stands on the issue of bullets as what I should  allow in a case like this?

DFRPG / Up To Their Waists In Demons
« on: September 28, 2010, 09:23:45 PM »
I am somewhat worried about the threat posed by the next story arc I have planned. I currently have six PCs at "Up To Your Waist" i.e. 25 skill points, skill cap - great, and base refresh of 7.  I am planning to pit them againt a demon similar to Kalshazzak, the "toad demon" from Stormfront, but I am worried that this might be too much for them to handle.
I have done the calculations for a mixed group from Scaling the Opposition in YS and the creature comes out as Challenging which sounds like what I have in mind, but I am still concerned.
This is a realitively new group of characters, and all of us are new to the FATE system. So far they have defeated and destroyed a WCV who was newly arrived and a handful of his minions.  By the end, one PC was hospitalized, several were injured, and one was suffering from a moderate case of depression.
Again, this seems reasonable, especially considering that the player of the hospitalized character [He had his guts ripped out by a ghoul.] refused to use either concessions of fate pionts to avoid or mitigate that outcome.
So, am I worrying too much?  What sort of threats should they be able to handle, and how much damage is it fair to do to them in the process?
