DFRPG / Catches for Natural Animals
« on: September 20, 2012, 07:23:47 PM »
In some of the custom characters and NPCs that I've seen on this board, specifically for various were-people, their recovery/toughness powers have been attached to a Catch.  I'm wondering what the general understanding of the board is for that situation.  I tried to search for a thread with this topic specifically, but I came up empty.

NOTE:  The OW Lycanthrope has Inhuman Recovery with no Catch.  Do you view this as an essentially undiscoverable Catch [+0] or as literally no Catch possible or existing?  How does this effect your consideration about a Catch for, let's say, an elephant?

DFRPG / Refinements for Focused Practitioners
« on: February 13, 2012, 06:47:11 PM »
Hey everyone, I posted on this topic quite awhile ago and I was wondering if positions have changed any. (Particularly given Mort's performance in GS)  I have suggested running with a houserule that allows FPs to use refinements to boost their abilities, but limiting it to -1 or -2 Lore instead of at their Lore level.  It just makes sense to me that FPs should be really badass at their discipline, and not get shown up by jack-of-all-trades wizards in their area of expertise.

EDIT: I should have mentioned that we generally cap the number of Focus Items/Enchanted Items one character can have.

DFRPG / Wererhino: The Catch?
« on: December 20, 2010, 09:31:54 AM »
For species with natural armor of some kind, like the rhino's Supernatural Toughness or the bear's Inhuman Toughness, would a beast shifter need to take a Catch?

Something like... chemical weapons?  Or a particular disease?

DFRPG / Upgrade a Supernatural Power
« on: December 16, 2010, 05:38:25 AM »
Any other prospective GMs out there, would you allow this?

Supernatural Powers:
Inhuman Strength [-2]
Human Form [+1]
   Supernatural Strength [-2] (the difference)
   Hulking Size [-2]
   etc

DFRPG / Catch: The Trappings of Winter/Summer
« on: December 16, 2010, 05:32:28 AM »
In the books, everyone with this catch only has Inhuman Recovery, and thus can only net them +1.  But in general, what would be its max?

It's an everything-but catch so that's +0
Only a special class of "people" can access it +1
Surely every clued in person knows that you fight Summer with Winter and vice versa +2
Theoretical Maximum: +3

Is this correct?

DFRPG / Knight/Emissary of Santa Claus
« on: December 15, 2010, 08:39:01 AM »
It being the season, and Jim having mentioned Santa at DragonCon, I've been thinking about what would make for a good character based around EDIT:a servant/representative of Old St. Nick, using his themes.  He'd need Marked by Power of course, and perhaps Unseelie Magic, but what else would make for a great themed character?  I have a few ideas, but I'm mostly interested in what you guys cook up.  What do you think?

DFRPG / Focused Practitioner vs Wizard
« on: December 12, 2010, 11:28:40 PM »
Besides the cool thematic reasons, are there any mechanical benefits for choosing an FP over a Wizard?

As the rules stand, it seems like even a pyromancer would be schooled by a wizard with fire as a specialization.  You can't even take Refinements for specialization, as a Channeler.  This may be only my impression, but I always thought ectomancers and pyromancers, etc., should be better at their particular element than a wizard would be.  But for just an extra -1 makes the sorcerer/wizard gets 2 extra elements and a specialization, plus the potential for even greater influence over that particular element by adding Refinements.

That seems odd.  Why wouldn't an FP at least be able to purchase Refinements for its element?  What do y'all think?

DFRPG / Expanding the Power Level
« on: December 11, 2010, 11:50:05 PM »
How game breaking would it be to introduce Game Power Levels beyond Submerged?  Something like:

Reef Dive (12 refresh, 40 skill points, skill cap at Fantastic)
Deep Sea (14 refresh, 45 skill points, skill cap at Fantastic)

Would that make Pure Mortals without a ton of stunts useless, or flood the game with fate points, or weaken the choice between free will and power to the point where it doesn't matter?  I'm curious if any board members knows Evil Hat's reasoning behind capping refresh at 10.

DFRPG / Catch Ideas
« on: December 09, 2010, 03:15:46 AM »
Even after reading the section in the book a dozen times, I'm still not clear how determine the value of a Catch.  How about we provide some more example Catches and try to puzzle out what we think their value should be?

Weapons Forged with Magic
Suspension Above the Ground/Floor
Running Water
Meteor Rock (thank you Smallville  ::))
Left-handed people
People born in a month ending with -ber (don't ask)
