DFRPG / Re: It Came from Cthulhu...

No, these guys are from the Delta Green side of things. So I think allowing 3 Stress should be sufficient. Believe me, brutality and terror are already par for course. No one likes to come to my games without three characters already made. I just really want to try the Dresden-esque creation process, as well as phase aspects and Fate points. I think I will use the suggestion of clearing out mental consequences by taking permanent Aspects - I like that a lot.

Oooooh, it's been a while sense I last played me some Delta Green. You guys have fun for me  ;D
Please do work on the insanity mechanic. I'm thinking it will need a bit of tweaking for a proper Cthulhu feel, but my hope is that giving players a bit of control will create a dynamic where they can chose to either fight the insanity (keep short term consequences, take the risk of filling all consequences and going off the deep end) or embrace the madness (Take an insanity aspect, increase overall chance of survival). One kind of character would stay generally sane, until they go out in a blaze of mad fiery glory, and the other character could last an entire campaign, but by the end would be a total dysfunctional wreck.

I'm afraid that if I were to run it 'as is', it may be too easy to start sliding out of one's mind.
No. In my experience fate is a much more heroic and lenient system compared to CoC. If these are hardcore CoC players then they will expect nothing less than total brutality. It's part of the genera.

My advice:
Put a low cap on stress related skills- stress tracks should be short. CoC has a very different pace compared to Dresden. If you get hurt you need medical attention. To bad the doctor is a cultist.
Give players the option to clear out serious mental consequences by making them permanent aspects. That way players can stack up on loads of fun phobias and delusions. Embrace the insanity.

A convention center. Plenty of crazies around to blend in with.

DFRPG / Re: Dresden Themed Fate "Tokens"
« on: June 30, 2010, 06:07:42 PM »
I remember a Fate thread on rpg.net about running star wars with Fate. One suggestion was to use black and white (or red and blue) fate tokens. The white tokens are normal fate points, dealt with in the normal way. The black tokens were pit in the middle of the table, within easy reach for everybody. These were dark side points, and you could use as many of them as you wanted, absolutly no strings attached  ;)

As for what I will use, it's not themed, but I have some really nice, well weighted poker chips. There's something amazingly satisfying about feeling the weight in your hands, clicking the chips together, and throwing them at players.

Check your evil hat account. Fred it putting up UPS tracking codes. Honestly though, it doesn't help at all. I've digressed from waking up in the morning idly wondering if the books will come, to refreshing the tracking page every 10 minutes just in cast they magically teleported to my doorstep.  ::)

Wait, what? Order 1922 out of 1600?

Does this mean I won't get a first edition?

I can't tell if you're serious, but no, I think you'll be ok. I've heard some other people say that they thought that the order numbers were a few hundred off. One guy said he was sure he ordered within the first 20 minuets of preorder, and he had order number 300something. So assuming orders didn't start at #1,  and 1600 is a rounded down number, you're probably at the tail end. Or you have to wait 4 more weeks for the next printing  ;D

DFRPG / Re: Optional dice rolling system for those without Fudge Dice
« on: June 29, 2010, 01:36:24 AM »
A good probability program, for anybody interested. I already plugged in 4dF, 1d6-1d6, and 2d6 centered to 0.
http://anydice.com/program/11a

As an aside, I've found fudge dice to be a subjective thing. My group used them for a few sessions, then decided they didn't like them. It wasn't anything big, but 4dF creates a very sharp and predictable curve, which just didn't fit the groups love of zany, off-the-wall action. As players they decided that they actually liked less predictable rolls, where there was more chance to succeed and fail dramatically. 2d6 fits the players a lot better, and works in the rules as long as it is used consistently.

I swear Fred has mentioned UPS, but I really don't know...
For those who don't obsessively fallow Fred's twitter feed, little bit of bad news this morning
"So, Fedex delayed the refill shipment of packing material by 1 day. Bit of a hiccup for the warehouse, but they're back"

The Evil Hat webstore has to be manually updated by Fred. Fred is currently at the DFRPG release at Origins, so many people will get the books before the store is updated.

Fred's twitter, 21 hours ago:
"Update from the warehouse is they have a few hundred shipped out, but this is out of a total of 1600; going as fast as they can."

So I don't know, let's say they're shipping ~400 orders a day. Gestimate that, then add in UPS shipping time from a factory in Navada to your house. Maybe give 24 hours for Murphy's Law and general unluckiness. It all ads up to one thing- TOO LONG.

Which begs the question - how Canon is this? For instance, the blacked out part after the pyramids in Egypt definitely refer to a scene in Changes.

Does the fill and explanation in the book equate to WOJ status?

From what I understand, most of the setting material in the DFRPG was written by a really cool guy named Chad Underkoffler, who did a lot of reading and research to get to know the Dresden canon. Everything he wrote was reviewed by Priscilla, who is a alpha reader and generally knows everything. When something was ether unknown or too vague they would go to Jim for answers.

So I don't know if it's WOJ. Stuff like the exact mechanics of feeding dependency aren't going to be *exactly* like in the book. But I think that the flavor text should be considered canon, because Jim would potentially say something if he objected to part of the text. Either that or he would just rub his hands together and laugh maniacally. This is Jim we're talking about...

DFRPG / Re: WotC OGL WTF?
« on: May 30, 2010, 03:30:03 PM »
Additionally, Evil Hat Productions is made up of some very cool people who like to see their work rethought and expanded on by others. Their use of the OGL is what makes Fate based games like Diaspora and Legends of Anglerre possible.

On a side note, I remember a DFRPG conversation where someone suggested that WotC was actually ran by the council, and that they defused ritual magic by disguising fragments of rituals as Magic the Gathering cards.

DFRPG / Re: Minions (zillions of them)

Actually, sponsored magic would work great. My original problem with it was that sponsored magic comes from a greater power that feels you're working in the power's best interest. You have total control of the imps and don't owe favors to anyone, so it doesn't quite fit. But the imps aren't the source of power, the original demon is. You could take sponsored magic and keep the demon in the picture as the sponsor. Sure, the demon doesn't have any direct control over the imps, but with 10,000 imps around it could easily track the PCs and know where they are and what they're doing at all times.  Add in the kind of trouble PCs always get into, opportunities for misdirection and the temptation of power, I bet that demon would just have a field day!
