That is exactly what i did for my martial artist, make Breath weapon based of fists.   The other thing to consider might be something like "Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki" (Heavens Gliding Dragon Flash), which is his ultra fast step in technique.

Stunt
Amakakeru Ryū no Hirameki
You may move one zone as part of a weapons attack without taking a supplemental action. Take a one stress hit due to the extreme acceleration required.

something like that, though that might not be enough of a cost to do so... not sure.  but you get the idea
Or if you are going powered route anyway, remove the penalty. A -1 power to let you move one zone while attacking does not seem overpowered to me.  And this would be move in keeping with Kenshin type character, HE moves fast, never did anything at range i can remember.

Thanks.  That does round out the character a lot better.

Went with rapport as the great since that did let me get rid of unflappable.
And the Item of Power bonus is only 1... just looks off because i use a spread sheet to build so looks weird when i copy it over.

Does the idea of his temple actually being in the NeverNever world?  It is a stronghold there, and they occasionally send emissaries to the world to see how things are going and for the monks to learn and whatnot?  Though... this might mean taking emissary of power... it kinda fits well with my idea of a trouble "unaware of the mortal world" he only knows about it through what they let him read at the temple....

Hey, thanks for the help.  Moved a bit away from the feeding dependency and just went with it as my trouble... seemed simpler to me....

If people are curious and want to help me out a bit.....character that came from these ideas is below.

Aspects
High Concept
Guardian of the Temple of Light
Trouble
     Mysical Abilities Require Ki
Background
     Warrior Monk   Self Evident
Rising Conflict
Guardian Dieties   Symbols of his being a “guard” of them temple, they enhance his offensive and defensive abilities
The Story
Journey to the west   Sent out to travel and see the world, help people, etc
Guest Starring
      Vow of Poverty   Obvious
Redux
Katsujin Ken    Oath not to kill

Superb   Fists
Great      Discipline, Alertness,  ??
Good      Endurance, Might, Conviction
Fair      Prescence, Lore, Scholarship
Average   Resources, Empathy,    ??

What should 3rd great and 3rd average skills be? i can't figure out what would round him out....

Mortal Stunts      -8   2
Unflappable                   -1   stunt, you may use discipline to defend against social attacks
Return Strike           -1   As reposte, but for fists

Powers
Item of Power           1
Guardian Dieties      Silvery Black skin tight metal guantlets, symbols of the guardians of the temple.
Weapon: 2
Ryozan Blast          -2   As Breath weapon, uses fist skill instead of weapons,  force effect

Powers (his own, not items)
Seikuken                  -1   You may use fists to defend against ranged  attacks in all situation where athletics would apply.                       Mysical Training          -1   Due to your training at the temple, you Attack and Defense rolls with fists are made at +1

Ryuusei Seikuken          -1   2nd Level of Seikuken.  When taking a full defense action, gain an additional +2 to the Roll.  This technique requires a calm mind and as such can only be used when such an aspect is in place, this may be done through a declaration (either by spending a fate point or a discpline roll)

Korui Nuki                   -1   By concentrating all his stength in his strikes, all attacks that rely on muscular force are done at +2 on a sucessful strike, this is raised to +3 when breaking an inanimate object

Inhuman toughness     -2
inhuman recovery          -2
catch                          3   Mortal Fists, Research-able   (idea is for the temple to be a known force, and the only time they seem to get hurt and take damage is from a better martial artist then them...)

How does this all look?  I am considering doing away with the toughness and recovery all together... not sure it fits.

DFRPG / Mystical Martial Artist help.
« on: August 05, 2010, 01:28:25 AM »
So, working on a martial artist/mystical monk type
2 questions.  Would allowing Breath Weapon to be based on fists instead of weapons break anything? Ie.  Extend energy past his body?? ( I don't think so, but input is good right?)

2nd Question, With Feeding Dependency i want to make it be something more like Ki/Sleep dependency.  Instead of eating something, it is that he needs sleep and rest, using his powers makes him tired... and if he fails the check he simply passes out until he gets enough sleep.  How should the power be changed? It doesn't seem quite right... Stressful situations shouldn't trigger it for example...
Going to try and modify the tattoos of St Giles somehow to, something like "monk training"... but haven't figured out how to word it yet...

Any help is appreciated though I am sure will have more questions later ...

but i'd not allow an IoP silk shirt to have an inherent armor bonus.

Valid argument, but you might want to re-think the "silk" arguement.  16 layers of silk stops bullets, lol.

I would just go and say it is an "armored leather jacket"

Something like this maybe.

« on: August 01, 2010, 12:28:38 AM »
So! If he has Toughness and Recovery powers as a result of holy energy, what would a good catch be?

I would actually say Holy Energy, so that others emissaries of good and whatnot can injure him....or things from people/creatures that are good. Or even just pure mortals?

Yes item of power is unbreakable except for specific specific means and yes it can provide armor, that is covered under the it is what it is.

Hm, going to have to rethink the catch thing i guess then.
thanks for the magic arrows, i thought zone effect was 3 shifts

okay, so magic can only effect ONE trapping of a skill at a time then?

Would this work for a capture type spell, Offensive block 6, 3 shifts to duration? Is that all it would take to prevent them from doing things? (don't want it to be damaging)

On catch value, so how about making it an out of combat heal only? So you don't get to clear minor consequences? He could only have it operate while sheathed? Would that work for a catch?  What value might that be worth?
What would say w sheathed + meditating be worth?

and wow that was a barrage of questions, ... maybe i should just take out some refinements and have less limited healing? i mean, right now he is kind of an insane starting character anyway....

Oops. Okay, that should be clearer now

Did i go wrong somewhere in this calculation?
I think part of the problem i have is that i think the catch really needs to be worded/worked a bit differently for recovery, since it is not Bypassing toughness per-say, but saying what he doesn't recover from...i could change it to magic perhaps, since as you can tell he is essentially a weapon user....

Catch Calculation
Protects against everything +0
Bypassed by something anyone could reasonably get access to.  Anything being removed/cut off the body won't heal, limb, ear, hair, finger, head, etc is my basic idea for the catch +2, and swords or something that can do that are pretty easy to get.
Something researchable, +1 (background for the character is he comes from a family of swordsmiths and enchanters, and they often make sword of healing and the like)

Edit: Would something like sword must be sheathed work as a catch also?? So the recovery won't actually be usable in combat unless he can sheath it?

Lol, none.  2 refinements, all to enchanted items.  and the ones from thaumaturgy also.
4*3 = 12 slots.

Not switching focus items, instead having focus items to have stronger enchanted items, which i currently have 12 slots of, lol.

since it isn't an item that is carried, really fine for it to be a "workshop" focus items anyway, it's not like you need it in the field like you do for evocation foci.

Edit: and yes, entanglement is perfect for that, thanks.

edit2: sort of, this just applies the ASPECT right? it doesn't actually perform a block to prevent them from doing things? or am i misunderstanding something?
