Title: Name the next book! (Unofficial Fan Contest begins!)
Post by: Griffyn612 on September 25, 2021, 02:08:39 PM
Conspiracy Theorist suggested Butcher might not be settled on the name of the next book (described as spanning the year after BG as Harry deals with the fallout of recent events).

CT suggested SPELL BOUND, which got my brain thinking.  I came up with HEAD CASE, FAMILY MATTER, and COURTING DISASTER, but I thought it might be fun to open it up to everyone to propose their ideas.

The Rules:

Just post your ideas, and I'll add them to the list. Votes can be changed as more options are added, but you can only vote once.

Well, as first up to the plate so to speak I'm for "Courting Disaster."   I think that is how it is going to be in more ways than one.

I voted for Spell Bound, but how about Tied Knot?  Drug Ring?  Veiled Threat?  Dresden titles are fun.

Sorry HEAD CASE is taken for Bob’s origin story, with Harry on a paternity case tracking down Bob’s parents. I hope.

The skull is literary a container for a talking head, and very neurotic (Bob’s second favourite ‘rotic’)

We need it at least as a novella, and Jim loves writing for Bob.

What about DEATH MATCH? Harry is marrying an apex sexual predator and is likely to end up in a fight to the death/duel leading up to his nuptials, better yet a wedding morning duel by someone from the White Court or White Council trying to derail the wedding, or something else Raith had already promised his daughters hand to.

I'm picking up Knot and Veil and even Ring, but how does Drug fit in?

I hadn't considered that as a Bob story, but that sounds fun! We will have to self-actualize it into existence.

Death Match sounds more like the wrestling book, but could fit.

That's "Mary Poppins!"  Hmmmm... Now that I think of it she may have a lot in common with Lara Raith. ::)

The addictive nature of whampires?  Idk, it's definitely the weakest on its own of those.  Depending on what else is happening in the book, it might fit better.

Shotgun Wedding. Hey, it has equal letters so it fits the naming convention lol.

Now  suppose these probably could run into some copyright, but...

Vampire Diaries
White Satin

Others:

Cast Away
Dated Diary
Chicago Wizards
Foul Fall
Winter's Warmth
Sweet Spring
(we already had Summer Knight)
Court Cases
Lady Love/Lust
Demon Dates

Or a bit negative:
Trauma tracks
Fears Alone
Downer Ending
Sweats Sorrow

I think I like Lady Love most, of these - even if obviously Lara is not much a lady not very loving... but I'm sure Molly can be woven in to make it fit :p

Most of these aren't really idioms or common phrases, though, right? I'd say Cast Away, Court Cases, Lady Love are, but the only one of those that gets close to plot adjacent is Lady Love, and that'd have more to do with Molly than Lara. I could see Court Cases being about issues between the courts, a la Lara and Molly, but Molly is playing ball as far as we know.

DATING DANGER
I don't think I've heard that as a phrase or idiom.

DANGEROUS PROPOSALS
COLD FEET
WEDDING JITTERS
These are apt phrases, although I'd argue INDECENT PROPOSAL is more common and still apt than DP.

Eh, Downer Ending seems like an idiom to me. And... was Cold Days or Ghost Story really that much more idiomatic?

Tha said I'm not gonna claim they were all brilliant :p

I'd say they were common phrases. Skin Game might be the least common, but other than that one, nobody has to guess at the meaning of each book title. I'm not sure that "Downer Ending" is common enough knowledge to be both a known phrase and also an illusion to the events of a book about a wedding and manhunt.

And besides, it'd be too much of a spoiler. He couldn't name Changes "SNIPER BULLET".  :P ;D

Let me know the context for these in relation to the wedding or hunting Justine and I'll add them.
I can see it all now.  ;D

OK, let's see:

FATE BOND:
Harry and Lara bound together by fate/Mab/marriage. Maybe destined to find and safe Justine and/or the baby.
Maybe forced to be together for a long long time.

WINTER HUNGER:
Harry representing Winter. Lara representing the White Court's Hunger demon. Or it can be seen as hunger for Winter. Different interpretations apply.

HEXED GIFTS:
I wanted to do something with "hex". And I wanted it to be real words, so " Hex Wed" was out. LOL
The alliance and Harry as a "gift" to Lara, but she will soon find out that it won't work so smoothly, once Harry's point of view stands in her way.
And maybe literally hexed, because of magic-technology mismatch. I don't think the Raith mansion technology is wizard proof.

SLOW BURN:
Can be understood in different ways. Either Harry and Lara come to like each other (OK, somehow they do already, even if Harry is pissed about the marriage), so their "love" or more likely respect for each other and the understanding will grow slowly with time.
Or literally Lara burns when she touches Harry.

KARMA QUEEN
Past deeds come back to bite a queen. For example queen Lara: told Harry once that the WC will kill the wizards with love. Harry hasn't forgotten.
The queen could also be Mab (deeds related to Harry, Lara or older deeds) or Molly (what she did to Carlos or the recruiting mission in Cold Case; there is no need for the title to apply to Harry or Lara)

Other interpretations welcome.

Edit: also I didn't want to choose any titles containing variations of the words 'wedding', 'marriage' and 'date'

It has to follow the naming convention.  Two words that have multiple meanings with the same number of letters in each word.

Harry’s wedding night, and the celebration thereof with a dance orchestra.

HELLS BALLS

I really laughed when Harry let his Freudian slip around Lara. It was probably initially a misprint but I bet it was deliberately kept, it is pure ID Harry.

Pretty much ALL of these are better than 12 Months which sounds like a diet book “TWELVE MONTHS to get that bikini body”.

By the way, why haven’t we had the short story MOUSE TRAPS, a Team up between Mouse and Maggie to track down  the escaped Easter Bunny Maggie was entrusted with over the Easter holiday break. Again this needs to exist.

LEAP YEAR

The timeline has Storm Front occurring within a year or two of 2000 and the last story (currently) Christmas Eve is 14 years ASF, if Storm Front occurred in 2001 the timing is perfect and would have Jim finally set the timeline to rest, so to speak, and a lovely title leading into MM where he leaps between two timelines, and deals with the unusual structure,

Here’s another one WEDDING CRASHER.

Who invited the Outsiders? Justine turns up.

Harry’s nuptials are likely to be a slow car crash. You can see it happening but cannot stop it, nor draw your gaze away.

Seriously pretty much all of these are better than 12 Months, Jim might as well just pick one at random.

Threw my hat in the unofficial ring for courting disaster, but here's a few more:

Crippling Betrothal
Headstrong Engagement
Necessary Alliances / Unlikely Alliance (hits not just the marriage, but also the war alliance and other possible short-term alliances out of necessity, e.g. with the Merlin)
Starborn Unveiled (In addition to the wedding date, Harry has a 12 month promise on the Starborn secrets)
Ceremony Shattered (again can refer to both the wedding and any other ceremony that forms the plot of the book)

Ah yes, Mary Poppins  :)        (after writing this I saw that Mira beat me to it)
I agree it is quite an excellent title.

Among the other titles of this thread, my favourites are "Cold feet" and "Wedding Crasher". But for the first we would need Mab, Molly or Harry actually using ice to freeze someone feet, preventing them to move. For the second, it would only make sense if there is someone actually ruining the wedding which, to be honest, is quite probable. My candidates would be Eb, a released Thomas or someone nemfected (I would be pleased too if somebody stops the wedding). Or Mouse, protecting Harry from Lara  ;D
Stars and Stones, I really want Thomas back...

Well it’s how Mab cured Lea. By putting her in a block of ice.

How about

DEMON AISLE

Harry insists the ceremony is held on Demonreach, just in case of wedding crashers, remembering Will and Georgia’s nuptials being interrupted by Jenny Greenteeth.

Harry would be walking a demon up the aisle on a Demon Isle.

OUTLAW IN-LAW

Harry is forced into marrying one of his former adversaries.

I really like this one, really punny, and matches earlier themes of detective fiction, as well as having a nice symmetry, it can apply equally as well to Harry outlawed by the White Council as to Harry marrying Lara.

Power Couple: As a term it can have both positive and negative connotations.  Plus, whenever I hear that two very famous people are dating I don't expect it to last.  If they get married I usually expect it will end in disaster.

There are two great examples from real life I can point to.  The first was way back when Ben Affleck was dating Jennifer Lopez.  I have to admit if I could come up with something as horrible as Benifer by combining Harry and Lara's name, I would.  The second occurred a few years later when Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie were married.  I wasn't surprised that neither relationship lasted, though I was a bit surprised with how long Pitt and Jolie remained together.

Bann Sidhe.

Bann (is the intention to marry in Christianity). A Banshee or Beansidhe is a Celtic wailing spirit, a Fae in the Dresden Files.

Good Year

Could work because of the irony. A "good year" is also a harvest term as well for a productive harvest, a particularly high quality crop. The irony being of course Dresden has a terrible year...and at the end feels like he is about to be harvested.
Title: Re: Name the next book! (Unofficial Fan Contest begins!)
Post by: Conspiracy Theorist on January 02, 2022, 02:35:15 PM
Bann Sidhe is a bit lopsided but still better than Twelve Months and Good Year is a bit tyred, but let’s try

“STAG DON’T”

“Harry realised he had made a terrible mistake in asking the Erl King to organise his Batchelor party as he scrambled to avoid the Wild Hunt.”

Or

“LAST DAZE”

“Harry has to snap out of his funk as he is marrying into the lethal White Court.”

I like this, punny, references the impending loss of his freedom to matrimony and his mental health issues, as well as fits in a temporal reference which is the ONLY thing Twelve Months does.

OR

“LONELY KNIGHT”

“Harry’s wedding night is a sham, alienated from his brother and his grandfather.”
Title: Re: Name the next book! (Unofficial Fan Contest begins!)
Post by: Yuillegan on January 04, 2022, 12:30:11 AM
It is a bit lopsided, I admit.

I like STAG DON'T but I can't see the other two being actual titles.

Truth be told, if it isn't TWELVE MONTHS then I doubt we will guess it here. But it's fun to try!
Title: Re: Name the next book! (Unofficial Fan Contest begins!)
Post by: Conspiracy Theorist on January 15, 2022, 11:49:22 PM
We have been concentrating on the wedding or the length of the narrative when perhaps we should be looking at the year long search for Justine and her child with Thomas.

“Harry knew from personal experience what it was like to have your child abducted, for his brother Thomas trapped in Demonreach he could do no less than than to rescue his child and love from Nemesis in a case far too close to home.”

MISSING PERSONS

Referencing not only the missing Justine and Child but the “missing” Thomas, the whereabouts of the Titan,  the estranged Eb and the lost Chandler, the dead Murphy (and Hendricks), Wild Bill, and Yoshi, as well as everyone who died or was lost in the Battle of Chicago as sub-plots these are the people he lost and the people he is missing, family and friends, fellow citizens and fits in very nicely with the noirish flavour of the series. Harry would constantly be called upon in his professional capacity as Wizard of Chicago to “find” people missing in the Battle of Chicago by desperate loved ones.

Jim is likely doing this as an examination of grief and loss and effects on mental health, Harry likely suffers from PTSD, grief, depression, Survivor guilt and impostor syndrome. This plays into all of this.

This also fits in with Christmas Eve where Harry gets the accounting of the lost and injured from Mab, ‘missing persons’ indeed.

This is my current favourite.

The Portmanteau name title would be

Last HaRa

A pun on Last Hurrah of course and Harry and Lara .I love puns and the pain they inflict upon other people, there must be a nerdy White Court Vampire who lives on this.
