Locus Magazine listed Peace Talks as having a May 2019 release date. This isn't gospel, just based on the publisher's printing schedule.
Update December 6th. An updated version of the publishers schedule through September 2019 no longer has Peace Talks listed.

If I was giving him maximum credit I'd guess that he got into some unhappiness with his publisher and for whatever reason isn't writing a new book until it gets sorted out.  Roc/Penguin probably owns all rights to Dresden as a novel, but he can get away with going to other publishers with graphic novels or selling Dresden merch b/c whatever contract they had probably sold rights to the novel series only.  Maybe even novels only for a period of time and hes trying to wait them out.  That would give him the benefit of the doubt on why he's supporting himself via comics, card games, and nic knacks for 5 years instead of writing a book.

If thats hot the case then well, hes probably just decided he has enough money that he can work 2 days a month by rambling at con panels then approving some junk to sell and not have to write anymore.  Which, TBH, has to be tempting if its an option.  I'm not sure i wouldn't take it if it was there.

There's a brand new update on the Upcoming Works page. http://www.jim-butcher.com/faq/upcoming-works (http://www.jim-butcher.com/faq/upcoming-works) As of December 6, 2018 Peace Talks is now at chapter 36 in draft form! The last 3 books were 51-53 chapters, so if Peace Talks is around the same length then its 68-70% done.

And yes, I ran to my bookshelf as soon as I saw this to literally count the chapters of the last 3 books.  ;)

Copy paste of the whole thing for the lazy among us.

"An explanation, so you can stop emailing complaints to the feedback box, which doesn’t reach Jim, and mainly just frustrates the folks running this site.)

Personal problems/life events spanning the past several years are what gummed up the works.

Got divorced, with all the fallout that comes from that
His dog died, who was “the brains of the operation” as Jim tells it
    Got engaged
Moved to another state to live with his fiancee
Had to live in an apartment with no private writing space for years longer than intended because the contractor setting up his new house has blown the deadline by a couple years at least

That latter bit made it especially hard for him to get traction on Peace Talks. Thankfully the house is finally inhabitable and Jim’s been back at work.

As of December 10th, 2018 the current draft of the novel is up to chapter 37. Progress!"

I was among those grumbling but I can understand all of this. A divorce alone is rough. Losing your dog is also a heartbreaker. Sounds like Jim has been deep in the crap, I can relate as my 2018 has been the same way. It'll get done when it gets done.

If anyone from Team Butcher happens across this thread, I'd like to say thank you.  As has been said any number of times, Jim doesn't have any obligation to his readers.  If he woke up tomorrow and decided he was done with Dresden, it would be a crying shame, but also his prerogative.  So, I don't think there was ever a need to explain the reasons for the delay with Peace Talks.

That being said, a little communication goes a long way.  While there's no need to explain the "why", maintaining an active dialogue as you've recently started doing demonstrates substantially more goodwill towards and respect for readers than radio silence.

I write this not to stir up residual frustrations on either side (though I'm sure there will be some of that.  Sorry,) but in hopes that if any delays arise in the future, you will remain communicative.  Even if the communication consists of "Day 7: stuff happened, no news. Day 30: still no news."  This, to me, is substantially better than "Day 1: stuff happened, no news...Day 328: *crickets*"

Nothing is ever going to keep everyone happy, but I do think this type of communication might have mitigated the concerns of much of the reader base.  I know it would have in my case.  So, I say again, thank you for communicating clearly and regularly with us and I look forward to reading Peace Talks whenever Jim is able to get it out.

Best regards,

HV

I too am very happy to see the semi regular progress updates and agree in theory with what you have said.

Though I also understand when stuff happens in life posting that kind of a status may be one of the last things on someones mind.  For me it would probably have been even below the last thing on my mind.  It would have been. @#$#$ all this stuff is going on and I am not even getting work done.  I just need to get a little something done so I can let people know. Week later still unable to get work done #$@$@#$@#$ I just need to get a little something done so I can let people know. With each week just getting worse and worse on top of everything else.  Admitting I was getting nothing done would have been admitting ahead of time to myself that next week I would again get nothing done.

I do not know Jim (unfortunately as he sounds like he would be a fun person to know and might get me access as a beta reader :D )  so I have no idea what things were really like for him.  I am just going to hope the rest of his life is both long and good and that he enjoys writing so that he writes lots of things I can read.  If he ever stops writing oh well it will probably be better for my health to not stay up all night reading every time one of his new books comes out  anyway :)

This is all my speculation, but based on the last few books and how much longer each has been than the previous I'd guess this is a 55-60 chapter book, and he seems to be working at a pace of about a chapter a week so we should only be a month or two from a finished draft.

FWIW, 59 --> 60 is an increase in chapters of about 1.5%
If it wasn't "getting long" at ch.59, I don't see that it's doing so at ch.60

You are of course correct it was already long.  After all if 42 can express life the universe and everything then nothing should take 60 chapters.   ;D

I think it's simply that 60 = 42

(for large values of "42")

But you will have to.  ;) Just enjoy some other books in the meantime.

I have started reading another series with lots oft books. And when I'm done and there is still no Peace Talks, then I have planed to re-read another series.

And when the book is out, I most certainly will read it in two days and nights (hope I won't have to work ;)). Afterwards I will sit there staring into a void and decide to simply read it again, this time more slowly. And after that... nothing.  ;D

I am currently enjoying Master and Apprentice by Claudia Gray. With the hiatus in the DF I’ve fallen deeply into the void of SW. ;)

I read a new DF book super fast once to see what happens, then reread slowly for nuance and greater appreciation. And listen to the audiobook as well because James Marsters is amazing! Then I spend months debating about the book on here.

Define "finished."

Like "dead" in Dresden's world, those who understand the issue realize it's more a shades-of-grey than black-and-white...

Have all the beta's given feedback?  Has Jim handed it to his editor?  Has the editor given it back for any further revision?  Has the final draft been moved to proofing and galley stage?  Has a cover been commissioned?  Has the artist turned it the piece?  Is the art finalized?  Etc Etc Etc...

That's progress!

Last word I saw was "in the hands of the beta readers," so it's moving along.

And WoJ says his books these days get lots of pre-writing and edit-as-you-go effort, so I expect it doesn't need much from the editor.

woot!

Last post on this was about 3 weeks ago. I'm presuming that the early chapters needed some work because of the time lapse between start and finish.

Has anyone gotten any hints about where the manuscript is in the revision/editing process?

I suspect (quite strongly) that the editor/publisher intentionally keep things a black box.

Does anyone have the dates (did Jim reliably announce) for each book, when it went into the editor's hands..?

There has been no news since the 22nd of July.
I am posting this because often, when I posted something like that or just  thought about it, there was an update not long after the post.
So I am posting that to provoke said update. Does that make sense? For me it does.
I mean, it's October!!!

Currently I'm re-reading Dead Beat, because I wanted a dinosaur, and I will take my time and enjoy every bit of all the Dresden Files up until Skin Game.
And read other books in between.
But I would really like to know now, when I can spend my money on Peace Talks in 2-3 different versions (paper, e-book and maybe audio).

I have already successfully infected my neighbours and some friends and will continue to do so. Sadly some of my colleagues would be interested, but are too reluctant too try it in English. Cowards.
Because I said, I thought the books have to be read in the original language or else the best would be lost in translation.
But I won't give up.  ;)
I often tell them, yes, you are right, sometimes it's exhausting to read, but not because it's in English, but because you are not able to stop!!!!

Often I get asked "what do you read?" and when I say "Oh, it's about a wizard in Chicago" I can tell by peoples' reaction if there is a chance of infection or not.
I've always been trying to win over new readers of authors I like. And Jim Butcher is definitely in this category. Hello, Jim! Good work. I am a Dresden Files addict because of you.

So please, dear editors, enable an update, a release date or something. Anything.

Thank you.

There has been no news since the 22nd of July.
I am posting this because often, when I posted something like that or just  thought about it, there was an update not long after the post.
So I am posting that to provoke said update. Does that make sense? For me it does.
I mean, it's October!!!

RB

It made sense to me and I am hoping it works.  It has been long enough now that I think our hopes for a pre-Christmas release are getting unlikely :(

Don't trust any date that doesn't come from me, Jim, or Jim's website. His publisher hasn't set a date yet. It'll be at least another couple weeks before that happens.

Speaking from (probably shared) experience, the last fifteen minutes are spent staring at the clock, yelling at it for not going faster. I am also doing this to the calendar. You say it’s a bad idea, I say that I don’t care, I’m doing it anyway.

Hello, you all. Is there a reason why I can't open Jim Butcher's website? I've tried several times every once in a while for hours.
I hope it is being updated with news of a certain release date and maybe cover art or something like that.

OK. Correcting myself. There it is again and I can't see any change. Damn.

I'm getting really tired of chasing all over the internet for news.  I'd like them to make  news come out at one place, and for Butcher(or his reps) to speak in one voice.

I don't wanna hear about the trailer, since, as with everything else with this series, it isn't done.  I don't want to hear about the TV show because, what TV show?  The site admin for the main web site, Fred Hicks I assume, can't seem to do something as trivial as follow upon the primary Twitter feed, with an announcement that the server is fixed on the main web site.

I'd like the publisher to get with the program and get it done.  It isn't like they didn't know this book was coming since it's been in the pipeline for 5 years. It really doesn't matter when it comes out.  What matters is that they set a date. Even something as general as "Coming next summer 2020!!!!".  And then stick with it.

Perhaps I'm being unreasonable but can anyone in Mr. Butchers organization do anything but tease?  I'm starting to think that I need to go back to my old way of finding new content, wandering up and down the aisles of my favorite book store looking at cover art and finding books that I can actually read.  There was a certain magic to that.

So both amazon, a danish bookstore and some other place has set the release date to 16th of April. Is that just because one of them guessed and the others are copying?

I totally agree. I got really excited with Priscille's tease and also again when the main website went down. I thought it went down because of major Peace Talks news.

I am still kicking myself that I was too sick to have a chance at the thing that got a select few people access to the first few chapters of Peace Talks years ago. I understand that Jim likes teasing us. But personally this has gone on for too long for it to come acress as good natured at this point and is getting to feel almost cruel.

All I want is a relase date. Yes it would be nice if the first few chapters were released for everyone. At this point I'd be willing to forgo that in favor of just a relase date. I just want the book already.

I totally understand all the life obstacles Jim faced. I was just hoping for some more urgency to get Peace Talks out. It feels like they're dragging their feet.

I'm also not as forgiving at this point of creators stringing fans along since I've been burned by basically all my major fandoms right now. Dresden Files is the only one left standing now, and that's probably another part of why this endless teasing bothers me so much. I can't stand it when people are stringing me along.

End of 2019 seemed possible as a release time for Peace Talks when it was finished. Maybe now they're going for end of 2020? Maybe I should just forget how much I want to read this and move on with my life, picking up future books when (and if?) they come out?

I'm just tired of this endless anticipation. The teasing is making me apathetic.

I don't know about saxo and risingshadow but amazon have been using that release date for a couple of months.  Since before we even got the confirmation on Jim's site that the first draft had been completed.  So i'm guessing that they have plucked that date out of the air and the others are following suite because they also don't have a concrete date, but feel the need to put something there.  This is pure supposition though, I am most certainly not in the know!

At this point, I don't think it's still Jim; not any of it since "The End" tweet.  It's the publisher.  Jim (or Prescielle, or other "insider" sorts) are giving info when/as they get it, as they are allowed to release it.  But the publisher is in the drjvers' seat at this point, and the next book is coming out when they decide; just info about the release is coming out when they decide.

I saw some suggestions that maybe Penguin is trying to fit the release into their schedule so that this doesn't cannibalize other lines' sales, nor those lines cannibalize PT.  They may have quarterly revenues they want to balance.  There may be a prior commitment by Marsters, in conflict with recording the audiobook, and they're trying to coordinate that.   Etc etc etc.

Agreed. I tried to think about the release from a money making point of view, though I admit, I don't really have a clue, just what I think.
October would have been good for selling.
In January people still read their Christmas books (maybe even bring them back to the stores, if they are not interested in reading them) and maybe won't look out for new ones, except us fans, but there may be new readers/buyers that go into bookstores or browse through the internet in search of new stories. I wouldn't do that in January, because I would have to wait for my finances to recover. That would happen in February at the earliest point. There is nothing else in February. Most people will have read their December books and be ready to buy new ones.

So I think, we might have to wait at least until February. And maybe longer, if it is true that they wait for the audio release.

I thought Jim had mentioned at an event that the publisher was really eager to get the book out ASAP once it was done. Its been a while so i don't remember which con panel it was that he said this.

The good news is I've had more time for my reread. The bad bews is I'm about halfway through Changes and there's no info.

Hello, Olmer.
I think you will have to wait until the book is published. Maybe then your bookstores will have information about when translations will be out.
How long did it take with the previous books? Or are there even Russian translations yet?

According to some guy named Jim Butcher (but what does he know), Peace Talks out in July, followed by Battle Grounds in mid October. Basically, the thing got huge, and he had it suddenly swerve in a new direction, mid book, and his editor said "make it two books", so he did. That took time, but they will both be coming out this year.

... followed by Battle Grounds in mid October...

Late September (29th) in the USA.
1st of October in the UK (and, I presume, the EU (at least in English)?).

I have no info about translated editions.
Maybe go straight to Tor.com to ask?
Title: Re: Peace Talks Update

I am in the EU and I can pre order both the UK and the US edition on my iPad. The US edition is more expensive (10.99 vs 13.99 euro) and the UK version has a more colorful cover. The same for some European web shops like this one:

https://www.bol.com/nl/s/?searchtext=jim+butcher&searchContext=media_all&appliedSearchContextId=&suggestFragment=&adjustedSection=&originalSection=&originalSearchContext=&section=main&N=0&defaultSearchContext=media_all

(22.99 and 24.99 euro)

I do not know why I can get both and why the US version is more expensive. I do know that I can get the ebook on release day as soon as I press the button and for half the price of the real book and nobody has to wait for the delivery guy.

Sorry for the double post, but I have looked again and you seem to be right. The paperback version of Battle Ground is due in September 2020 on amazon. But Peace Talks will come in April 2021 as paperback.

Weird. Could be a mistake made by amazon. I didn't look for Battle Ground paperback at first, because I assumed it would be after Peace Talks anyway.
I have preordered both e-books. I can wait for the paperback. But this is confusing.

Yes. I believe, the date for the paperback PT is correct: April 2021. Because I compared the .uk and .com websites, too. But the BG release date of the paperback version must be an error. I'm sure it should be June 2021.
But secretly I hope the BG date is correct and the PT paperback will be out the same day as e-book and hardback. One can still hope ;)
I definitely want them as paperback, too, because I like to lend them to friends. And also because only the best books make it onto my shelf, too, and not only as data you can't touch or smell.

Just wanted to pop in and apologize to the people I tried to reassure during the 6 year wait. I never should've defended Jim, and the shitstorm story I wasted time reading shows. I am so, so sorry I ever had any faith or trust in Jim, much less hope that he'd be able to write a good book after so much time off. Shame since I loved this series.

Good news is I'm now used to living without new Dresden Files and I've picked up some new books during th wait.
