Title: Winter Knight, Tam Lin and White Walker comparisons.
Post by: criolle on August 12, 2017, 08:16:17 PM
GoT is currently pretty much on every forum in the kingdom(s). I was wondering if anyone had noticed (or if it was just me) the resemblance between the Winter Knight and the White Walkers.
Tam Lin seems to have been a knight, injured in the forest. In exchange for healing his wounds, he was bound in service to the Woodland Fae. He would not be mistaken for a Noble Knight by any means. Many a young maid who wandered through his forest found herself mysteriously with child months later. Perhaps it was a toll he extracted for passage through his realm. SOME legends have it that the Fae were prohibited from interfering in the affairs of humans and the Forest Knight was their way around such obligation. They gave him power and required HIM to do their dirty work. In exchange they healed his wounds/injuries and turned away from his transgressions.
In GoT, it seems the Children of the Forest created the White Walkers--from men--to battle men for them. Their weapon is winter. They raise the dead to do battle. They have no noble side.
Harry is the Winter Knight. The Queen of Winter healed his wounds and his weapon is Winter. She raised him from the dead (sorta) to do battle. Harry seems to be having trouble controlling his less-than-noble side.
Did the authors steal borrow from one another or did they both read the legend(s) of Tam Lin?
.
.
I'll just leave this hear and hope I don't get flamed.

This will be moved, if not outright deleted as trolling(just my opinion, but it has the feel and is a 'drive-by' post) but you fail to realize what the all hero mythology is, or the fact the DF is by and large based around the idea all stories are simply different renditions of each other. But consider instead only the fact that both are writers and both went to college for it(I confess, I'm only assuming Martin's schooling). I'd say it's likely, especially when dealing with mythological make up, they actually drew inspiration from having read the same great stories.
Draws my mind to one vid about magical systems where one of the authors makes a point to ask about a handful of writers and if anyone in the audience has ever even heard of them, to a general reply of no. Then asking if his fellow authors have read them to a resounding yes. An that's the difference between reader and writer that Butcher and Martin share and you may lack, despite reading a bit on Tam Lin wiki :)
