I'm compiling questions for a dresden files trivia quiz on facebook. I could do it the hard way and review all the books. But heck, I've got a brain trust right here! So I'm taking your favorite dresden trivia!

Tak, there are actually four Regional Commanders in the US, though we only know the names of two.  From Dead Beat:

She nodded again, more sharply. "Then I'm conscripting you into the Wardens as a regional commander."

I blinked.

"You'll be in charge of security and operations in this region, and coordinate with the other three American regional commanders."

These are excellent questions!  Thanks so much for posting them.

As for the Mavra question, however, I don't think she's necessarily the leader of the Black Court.  She's a very powerful member, but I don't think she's whatever passes for their Queen.

Question - I was re-reading DB and came across this (p392 (?) hardback) from when Morgan gives Harry his first check.  Morgan says:
Quote
But you may be required to participate in missions from time to time, and I will expect you to work with the other regional commander in America.  He operates out of Los Angeles.

This seems to imply that they're down to Harry and one other (Carlos).  As I thought about this, it occurred to me that when Harry first became a Warden, Morgan was one of the 4.  Then when Morgan took over the role of leading the wardens (due to Luccio's injuries), he was no longer a regional commander?  I also thought that in the battles, another one got killed.  But I skimmed back through DB and searched PG, and I can't find anything to back up either of these recollections specifically.

Are there other references to the regional commanders?  I don't have White Night, so I can't look there.

The part about Morgan i can answer. Morgan was elevated to the acting field commander leader of the Wardens. this was because of Luccio's little body incident. When he was elevated he became only the acting field commander of the Wardens, losing his title as regional commander.

I don't have anything specific from the books to back this up, but it's my feeling that there isn't probably a real hierarchy, as Wizards in a group are like herding cats.  The only titles that I recall having seen were Warden, Regional Commander, and Field Commander.

From the "four regional commanders in America" line, together with the comments about Harry and Ramirez being the two regional commanders in America, I'd been guessing that the other two regional commanders were in Canada, and by "in America", Luccio really meant "in North America."

What color is Harry's "blue" beetle?
Answer:  Powder blue, white, yellow, red, green, and primer grey

I found 3 quotes for this (Thanks, Priscellie for pointing me to FM!):

Fool Moon
The Beetle wasn't really blue, not anymore.  One of the doors had been replaced with a green duplicate, the other one with white, when something with claws had shredded the originals.  The hood had been slagged by fire, and my mechanic, Mike, had replaced it with the hood from a red vehicle.

Dead Beat
The car has had various doors and panels replaced with white, yellow, red, and green.  My mechanic, Mike, had managed to pound the hood more or less back into its original condition, which I’d bent our of shape while ramming a bad guy, but I hadn’t had the money to repaint, so now the car had primer grey added to its ensemble.

Proven Guilty
It’s a jumble of different colors, as my mechanic has replaced damaged portions of the body with parts from junked Bugs, but it started off as a shade of powder blue, and that had earned it the sobriquet of the Blue Beetle.

ETA quote from PG, to clarify that the "blue" is "powder blue," 'cause it's a fine piece of trivia  :D

in response to all the "number of regional commanders" questions, I think it's something like this...*deep Inhale*

It all starts with 4 regional commanders, when Morgan is promoted that brings it down to 3. Harry then fills this position bringing the total back up to four. this is when the war with the red court kicks into high gear and the other 2 commanders are killed, leaving just harry in chicago and Carlos in LA, so there you go everyone is right...*whew*

Quickie edit to remove spoiler for White Night.  --Priscilla

Uilos is correct!  While she doesn't appear in Grave Peril, Molly makes a quite memorable appearance in Death Masks.  Not only does she give Harry the idea to tie Susan up to "bleep" more safely, she tricks Sanya into prank-calling a bunch of businesses, thus endearing her to me forever. :D

As for Madrigal Raith, while he is mentioned by name in Blood Rites, he doesn't actually appear until Proven Guilty.  I'm not sure where you're getting Death Masks.

You might want to mention Mac, as well.

I would argue that Molly was a Minor Character in Death Masks and a Major Character in Proven Guilty.

However, by no means do I consider myself infallable. Corrections shall be construed as to be Constructive Criticism.

I would also count Nicodimus (Death Masks) as a Major Character, even though he was only in that book.
Being a Denarian leader is no joke.

Here's a Trivia Question that everyone is welcome to add to.
And should Villian Characters have a seperate Question?

Name all the Minor Characters in the Dresden Novels, and what Book they appear and what book they “fade out”.
storm front - fool moon - grave peril - summer knight - death masks - blood ties - dead beat - proven guilty - white night

Another Question might be  - do we count least Characters, such as Spike?

For starters, what are your standards on "Minor Characters"?  XD

Anyway, Rawlins' first appearance is in Dead Beat and I believe Stallings first appears in Grave Peril, not Fool Moon.  And Bianca first shows up in Storm Front.

Where does Bianca appear in Storm Front? I think that she is mentioned in there, but not actually encountered....
I would have to read the whole story to find it, and you might be able to answer quicker than I can find it.
=============================================================================================================
Humm, I suppose that I now have three terms - Least Character - Minor Character - Major Character.

Although Spike played the part of "Thug's Aid" in Storm front and "Dead Clue Person" in Fool Moon, he was forever a Least Character.
Someone that Harry was aware of, but did not really affect him much.

I suppose that I would consider a Minor Character someone that Harry interacts with more then once, but does not really have a lot of impact on Harry - or the Story.
Harry encounters the Carpenter Family as a Whole (I forget which book) -  Molly as a Minor Character in Death Masks, and Molly as a Major Character in Proven Guilty.

I would also say that Charity is a Least Character until Proven Guitly, where as the Minor Character of Avenging Mother she rocks!!
But, does her status change to Major Character? I would say, "Not yet."

As for Rawlings - You are forgetting the Battle of S.I. in Fool Moon - where everyone went up against the Loup Garu.
We met a lot of the Characters that were supporting Murphy in the Fight Against the Monsters.
They may not have had much mention, but they were there. Like being Least Characters, promoted to Minor Characters when the Story focused on them.
A bit extreeme on the point, but the Q was - "When is the first time you see these people?"

Major Characters are those that we see interacting with Harry a lot, and make an impact on him, and the Story.
Like with Nicodemus - although Harry only encountered him in Death Masks, Old Nick really made Harry realize the Truth of his Life, and face those facts. Old Nick changed Harry - and not just because he gave Lashiel to him.

As for Lashiel, I would have to say that Harry keeps her as a Minor Character; someone that is there, but does not control him - or change the Story.
=============================================================================================================
Now - my Question would be do we list each catagory - Least Characters - Minor Characters - and Major Characters?

I don't know if I would want to list every Character that Harry has ever encountered.

I think you're taking this particular trivia question a bit further than it needs to go. :D

As for Rawlins (not Rawlings), he wasn't in SI at that time, and he is not mentioned by name until Dead Beat.  Micky Malone, who we learn in Grave Peril took part in the battle with the loup-garou, isn't mentioned by name either.  Your question is about appearance, and being mentioned by name (or description, as Ramirez is in Summer Knight) is the only way of judging that.

As for listing every character that Harry has ever encountered, you'd only be reinventing the wheel.  Just wait until the RPG comes out... *drools*

I know this is from several pages back, but just wanted to point out that "The Blue Beetle"'s colors are a 'moving target'.  Remember, it started out 'blue', then the one door was replaced with a green one, the other a red, the hood, white, etc... but the poor Beetle has been beat up several times since then and has even had the entire interior replaced.

SF and FM references, as far as 'current' timeline is concerned are out-of-date.  Thus the question would have to be 'in SF, what colors were the Beetle's exterior panels?' or something.  Otherwise there will be something like 9 different 'correct' responses.

(( and if I'd kept reading, it was covered further... this'll teach me to read and reply when I'm unfocused ))

However:

ETA:

For starters, what are your standards on "Minor Characters"?  XD

Anyway, Rawlins' first appearance is in Dead Beat and I believe Stallings first appears in Grave Peril, not Fool Moon.  And Bianca first shows up in Storm Front.

Along with this - keep in mind Jim's definition of 'minor' character.  He doesn't tend to through characters into the story 'willie-nillie'.  There's almost 'no such thing' as a "minor character" in the Dresden-verse.  Just b/c they get a tiny mention in one book, doesn't mean they won't make an appearance again later.  Think: Butters, Elaine, Molly, etc...

As Harry has said, White Court vamps are the closest to humans because they have a incubus living wthin. In other words the human body is home for 2 souls: human and demon. Because that's the living arrangement, any wizard can soulgaze a White Court vamp.

It is possible that a Whampire that has allowed their Inner Demon to take control of them might not be Soulgaze-able.
- or perhaps one would never want to do so. I mean, would Harry really want to soulgaze Vittero ?

I came across the answer to the blue beetle in... the first book. Do we need the most recent? Specifics, specifics...

We dug out the specifics up to PG... and WN only referenced blue, red, yellow, and green.  Is there more in SmF?  (You'd think I'd have taken note of it, but I can't recall)

Tak, there are actually four Regional Commanders in the US, though we only know the names of two.  From Dead Beat:

Umm, I could be wrong here, and I hate to necro the post (I seem to have developed a bad habit of doing that...), but I think that by the end of Dead Beat/the beginning of Proven Guilty there are only 3 regional commanders, (one of them is presumed to be dead, due to the Red Court offensives) including Harry and Ramirez.

Mac's Place.

Ok, I can only recall two places where a full description of MacAnally's Place is given - at least not without re-re-re-re-reading the entire series, which I will do in a few months anyway, just not right now.

Note: I am only inlcuding the important parts, and not everything.

Storm Front. Chapter Five.
"Mac keeps a player piano."

"When you walk in, you take several steps down into a room with low clearance and ceiling fans."

"There are thirteen stools at the bar and thirteen tables in the room. Thirteen windows, set up high in the wall in order to be above ground level, let some light in from the street."

"Thirteen mirrors on the walls."

"Thirteen wooden columns, carved with the likeness from folktales and legends of the Old World."

"The colors are all muted, earth browns and sea greens."

"Mac makes his own beer, ale really."

"Mac does all his cooking on a wood burning stove."

Small Favor. Chapter 15
"There are 13 tables in the room, & 13 wooden pillars, each extensively carved with scenes mostly out of Old Wolrd fairy tales.
The bar is crooked and has 13 stools, and 13 ceiling fans."

8.  Name the different objects Harry used for finding things ("Windup duck", "Pentacle", etc)?

Yes, I thought the Beetle was a given, and yes, I did use the books to look up some of the answers.  Mostly it was for names and spelling.  I mean how many "L's"  are in Lilian? Is Alicia with an "S" or a "C"?  I especially used it to pick up some of the names of the more obscure Denarians.  Guys that only get mentioned by name once and all end in something-iel.

Here's some for you:

1. How many spells has Harry only used once?

2. How many Loup Garou victims can you name?

3. Who is Howard Fairweather?

Molly's hair was sky blue and cotton candy pink in PG, bleach blond in WN, it goes back to her natural blond in SmF, and it's sapphire blue in TC.

The monsters that show up in PG are Hammerhands; Jason Voorhees...I mean "The Reaper"; an Alien; Scarecrow; Genetically enhanced creatures (baboon and cat) and Bucky the murder doll.

I believe that Molly uses it on Luccio in TC ("You hit like a girl")
Others I seem to remember:

Harry (named so by Murphy)
Maggie Le Fay (Luccio in TC)
Murphy (Raith, Rawlins)
Georgia (Billy in FM.  I remember it shocked me a little)
Female FBI cop (Murphy in FM)
Bianca (Thomas in GP)
Marva (Harry in GP)

Others I'm pretty sure of:
Wife of Shadowman
Feline Phobophage(Harry)
Susan (Tara West?/ Cassius?)
Deirde (Susan)
Lara / any of the crazy ladies in Blood Rites/
Tara West (Harry)
Lash (Harry)
Madrigal (Thomas)

Need to check:
Murphy's sister? (by Murphy)
Maeve? (by Fix in GP/ Slate in SK)
Justine? (Madrigal)
Elaine (Molly)
Skavis/Priscilla (Elaine)
WC vampires in the deeps
Titania
Denarians in Shedd/on island (Maybe Nicodemus?)

Technically:
Rawlin's mother
Murphy's Ex-husband's mother
Papa Raith's mother
Justin Dumorne's mother
Marcone's Mother
Morgan's Mother

Probably yes - Harry mentions Susan's replacement in PG.

11. Can a female Wampire give birth?
Yes - we have evidence in White Night. "Cesarina Malvora" is young Vitto's mom.

12. Is there a basement lab in the new building where the Chicago Justice League meets?

There very probably is a basement - such things are usually kept when building new structures, unless you need to fill it in for structural purposes.  It probably no longer functions as a magic lab though.  That said, if there *was* a lab in the building, you'd probably either want it on the top floor (in case anything goes boom), or deep underground (in case anything goes boom).

13. How many members of the White Council are there?

Low thousands.

There is no official number, but we can get a bunch of estimates based off of a number of sources in the books.
- Number of people you can cram into the convention room in SK.
- 200 Wardens * "only about 1 in 5 have combat magic affinity to begin with".
- 1 Council-class wizard in Chicago (around 1 in 3,000,000 mortals) = 2300 Council-class wizards worldwide.

- 1 Council-class wizard in Chicago (around 1 in 3,000,000 mortals) = 2300 Council-class wizards worldwide.

as to the number of wardens, they lost around 3/4 durring the war,

Also there are atleast 2 council class wizards in chicago, Harry, and his apprentance Molly, not counting all the council class wizards that harry smoked in chicago through out the years, (victor sells, and the shadow man for instance) plus there is the possibility of the children of members of the ordo that may have the talent to become wizards, and just havn't manifested it yet. most of the ordo kids we saw were VERY young when we saw them.

Also what if Harry is wrong when he sais that most wizarding ability is inherated Maternally, we have no Idea who his grand mother is, could be she wasn't a wizard or a middleing practioner at all but just a mere mortal. before he could find out from his grandfather, he kind of got SHOT IN THE CHEST. and if this is the case, maybe baby maggie will become a council class wizard.

also with the athama knnn, I doubt that she gave the athama back to Lea, because it was causing lea to have too much power. I am not sure I am rembering this correctally, I dont want to look it up, but I want to say that Lea as powerful as she was already, when she got the athama, she increased in power to almost that of Mab herself, and somewhere it sais that Lea is second in power only to Mab. which to me means that she is even more powerful then the winter lady, however I am inclined to believe that the mothers are even MORE powerful then the queens, but they are bound in some way to not use it as they can

Seeing as I am a lurker deluxe and hardly never ever post anything I'll probably get this wrong so I ask forgiveness in advance... Toward the beginning of this string a few years ago it was asked how many people Harry had Soul gazed with. I'm pretty sure one was missed. The Leader of the Streetwolves from Fool Moon.

Now then...if that was already stated and I missed it completely I humbly apologize and retreat once more into the shadows.

Do we know what Harry's eye color is?  I was discussing this with someone the other day, as they thought he had green eyes (like Harry Potter) while I had the impression that they were brown or blue.  Then I realized that I didn't really know for sure, and started to wonder if it had even been mentioned.

All I can remember is a reference "I always thought I had my fathers eyes" but assumed that was a tongue in cheek reference to Potterverse. Might have to ask the mods unless somebody can remember the colour of his father's eyes.

Only answering the ones I don't have to look up in the books (which would be cheating.  Also time-consuming):

1.   What is the name of Harry’s car?  The "Blue Beetle"
2.   Where did Harry get his staff?  Carved it from a lightning-struck oak on his grandfather's Ozark farm.
3.   What color are “Gentleman” Johnny Marcone’s eyes?  Green
4.   What is the name of Harry’s preferred pizza delivery service?  Pizza 'Spress
5.   How many Sidhe queens are there and what are their titles?  Six--Mothern Winter, the Winter Queen and the Winter Lady; Mother Summer, the Summer Queen and the Summer Lady
6.   Who is Harry’s godmother?  The Leanansidhe
7.   What is the incantation for Harry’s fire spell? There's two--"Fuego" and "Flickum Bicus"
8.   Which of Harry’s spells uses the incantation “Vintas Servitas”?  Air (Wind) spell
9.   Mavra is the leader of what supernatural group?  Black Court of Vampires
10.   Who owns the only Sword of the Cross that has never been reforged?  Michael Carpenter (well, now Harry does...)

14.   What characters have appeared in every Dresden Files story so far?  Karrin Murphy.  Toot-toot Minimus. All I can think of...

17.   What is Harry’s full name?  Harry Copperfield Blackstone Dresden

19.   Who is the current Summer Knight?  Fix
20.   What unusual weapon killed a Black Court vampire during Blood Rites?  A frozen turkey
21.   What are Ebenezer McCoy’s two titles within the White Council?  The Blackstaff was one of them.
22.   What nickname did Harry give The Archive?  Ivy
23.   What was the wine poisoned with at Bianca’s masquerade party?  Vampire venom
24.   How many ingredients does a potion have? Five
25.   Which guests received gifts at Bianca’s masquerade party?  The Leanansidhe, the Dragon (whose name escapes me), Harry and--I think--one more

LOL, just figured out to work the "spoiler" function on the original post (I am only slightly less computer-savvy that Harry) so I can see how much I got wrong.  But I do disagree with a couple of the "right" answers too--"flickum bickus" comes to mind, because Harry occasionally still uses it.  Therefore should have been included with "fuego".

It really depends how you count it:

Storm Front:
Kalshazzak:  Is he considered '1' or '0' (Harry "took him out", but he didn't actually die).
Scorpion:  It's a construct, so never really alive, but maybe counts?
Victor Sells:  Technically, Kalshazzak got him, not Harry.

Total 0 (0-3)

Fool Moon:
McFinn: 1
FBI agents: 0?  Technically they killed each other, with Murphy picking up the spare.
Street gang: 0?

Total 1 (1-3)

...I submit that it just gets more complicated from there.

If we're talking about who has the highest bodycount outside of Harry I'd like to nominate Tessa for the Black Death and IIRC the Rwandan genocide (among other things).

Post by: Griffyn612 on November 06, 2013, 12:33:48 AM
For that matter, Nicodemus has been around longer than Tessa, and he's tried to go the plague route at least once in modern times.  Who knows how many he was involved in.

And can we discount any of the Vamps?  I mean, the Red King has to have a massively impressive kill-count.  Think of all the sacrifices over the years, and he suffers from an abnormal bloodlust as well?  That guy has to be up there in individual/commanded kills.

Individual kills is probably Ebeneezer, but we don't know how long Kincaid has been around, do we?  If he's been around a couple hundred years, he's going to have some impressive numbers.  Maybe not on Eb's level, thanks to some of Eb's bigger hits, but personal kills?  Maybe near the top.  Along with Mavra.

And when we are talking about body counts, are we talking about human, human and human like, or are we talking about sentient?

Don't forget that no matter what upstart being might be trying to up their numbers, I'd think the Queen of Air and Darkness, the Winter Queen would have taken out more folks from freezing related deaths than anyone.

4) Where does Ebeneezer live?
5) Who are the "normal human" signatories to the Unseelie Accords?

Since it's not his real name, he (Marcone) probably pronounces it however he likes.  Which is probably more like the American "Cap-own" rather than the Italian "Cap-own-ay".  Whichever sounds more "mobster".
