A few notes on Phoenix Comicon for those who aren't local and might be interested in attending.

The convention is growing (much as a lot of Comic Cons), but we've been doing a steady increase over several years so have not had the growing pains some cons have had.  Last year's attendance was 55,000.  This year is expected to be more.  We've expanded the exhibitor space from last year and have additional program space.

We will have close to 70 published authors on hand with three publishers exhibiting (Tor Books, Del Rey Books and Angry Robot).  The front page at http://www.phoenixcomicon.com currently has around 40 of the authors listed with 20+ more to come.

For the Books and Authors programming, I have four rooms dedicated to SF/F literature oriented programming (including a number of panels about writing), one dedicated to educational topics (for which educators can get learning credits), plus will also have panels in our larger event rooms.  We're also doing an evening Drinks with Authors event on Saturday night.

On the exhibit floor, we'll have an Author's Alley area with many of the participating authors having table space, signing table for those authors not doing a table as well as a larger area for the authors who will definitely draw a crowd.  Our bookseller is Mysterious Galaxy Books and we've expanded their space this year to accommodate all the books they will be carrying.

Jim will definitely be doing a solo talk and will be doing panels with other authors during the weekend. We're still in the process of putting together panel ideas.

For those interested in gaming, we have a large gaming area with many RPG and card games available. There's also plenty of comics guests, anime, horror, costuming, youth, actor guests, and various other things going on.

The hotels closest to the convention center are filling up, with the Sheraton being the one with the most rooms available.  Yes, it will be warm in Phoenix in early June, but the convention center and the hotels have very strong air conditioners.  The light rail also goes right by the convention center, so if you are staying elsewhere and you can get to it, you don't have to worry about parking.

Any questions you may have about the convention, please post them in this thread.

I am excited about this year's Comicon. Several more author's names have been added including Scott Lynch and L E Modesitt. I also see that John Barrowman and Nathan Fillion have been added to the guest list.

SCOTT LYNCH EEEEEEEEE

Calm down....  Bear will be there as well, so restrain yourself.

BTW, We've got almost the entire list of authors announced.  Now the trick is figuring out who goes on what panel.  We definitely won't put 10 urban fantasy authors all on the same panel like San Diego.

New user here!  Didn't see where it said if he would bring "Skin Game" for signing (and if he would be toting the books "in quantity.")  I am sure that by saturday or sunday, which is when I will be attending, that not many would be left if the number brought were reduced!

Looking forward to the con!

Jim won't be bringing copies to sell himself, but I expect there will be a designated book vendor at the con who will stock up in anticipation!  Lee probably knows better than I, though.

Yes, Mysterious Galaxy will be the bookseller at the convention and should have plenty of copies.  Jim is also doing the signing at The Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale on Thursday night and they should have some available afterwards.  I would suggest that if you are planning to go to Phoenix Comicon, it would be best to purchase your tickets in advance.

For programming, it looks like Jim's main solo talk will be early afternoon on Saturday.  He'll be doing other panels throughout the weekend but that will be the one where it will be all about Jim's work.

Yup! It's just a six hour drive.  Lots of quality audiobook time. :D

Hi all. Joined this forum just to ask for advice on this very topic.  How crowded do Jim's panels tend to get?  I'm considering my first "real" con attendance at this year's event in Phoenix, and it's because of several of the authors who are coming (Jim B. and Scott L. being top of the growing list -- very nice work, Mr. Whiteside!).  And by real con attendance, I mean taking off work (gasp) and going for myself to attend panels, not just taking my young son to show off his Joker costume on Sunday in the exhibition hall (we live in Phx).  But I'm dithering because I worry about taking leave time, finding a babysitter, and getting myself down there, only to get shut out of the popular author panels by other fans who have a much higher tolerance for and ability to get someplace early and camp out until the panel they want to see comes on. Is it not worth coming if I'm not willing to do the hardcore queuing thing?  What has your experience been in getting in to see Jim's panels at cons in other large cities?  Thanks for any advice you may have, including that I must not be a real fan if I feel the need to ask this question -- that will be most of an answer in and of itself.

i've never seen jim at a convention before but i have been to phoenix comicon before and they do a really good job at having enough room for the panels they are having.  the only panel i missed out on last year was john barrowman but that was only because the line was so long that i just decided to go to another panel only to find out they still had a lot of seats left.  besides that i haven't had any problems at phoenixcc in the past with making it into a panel i wanted to see due to seating.  hope this helps

Hi mcjanie, and welcome. I'm curious as well. I went to MisCon last year and had a blast. The panels had plenty of room and Jim was everywhere; chatting, mingling, just being very approachable and awesome in every way at that con. MisCon was my first con ever and I've been itching to find the time and resources to attend another. Phoenix Comicon will be my second convention, and in a much larger venue. I'm going to see the authors, especially Jim and absorb whatever writerly wisdoms I can from them in person. The comics, stars and cosplay are just a bonus. Hopefully the lines won't be horrendous. I'd imagine the rooms will be large enough, but with a convention this large I could be wrong. Crossing my fingers there'll be plenty of room.

This will be my first con as well and I'm really looking forward to it. My daughter has gone before but not me. I think she's just going on the weekend this year. I took the time off to go to the whole thing but we'll see.

Thanks, all, for your kind replies!  The ticket prices are staggered to go up this year the closer it gets, and I want to pull the trigger by 4/30 on which days I am going. But now they seem to have backtracked on the scheduling that had been listed for the author panels - several have disappeared, and most of the rest say "date/time TBA."  Sad face!!

If you go Saturday and Sunday it's the same price as the whole week. I figure I might as well get the week long package since I plan to go on the weekend for sure and even one weekday (or night) will mean I've come out ahead.

Omgomgomgomgomgomg!!!!

I just checked the forum for the first time in months and it's like my birthday and Christmas morning all in one! I could WALK to this convention! I've never been to a comicon, but this one will have Jim, MLN Hanover (Daniel Abraham), Kevin Hearne, Seanan McGuire and oh yeah, did I mention JIM FREAKING BUTCHER!!!!!!!

Ok. I might be a little overly excited. Going to buy my membership dealey thing now. Better than Christmas!

You live in downtown Phoenix? My work takes me from Central to 7th Street and from Adams to Fillmore. I haven't been to the convention center but I'm across the street at the Herberger Theater almost every day.

Yep! Live and work there. I work over by the downtown courts and live over in the Coronado neighborhood by the Barrio cafe. I'm about a 2 minute drive from the convention center! And I bought my signed copy of Cold Days from the Poisoned Pen where Jim will be doing the book signing!

So, howdy neighbor!! How excited about this are you? As I have no awesome costume, I will be the non-cool dork walking around in street clothes. Maybe we should see if any of the people from this forum want to actually meet up at the convention? Or is that weird?

The Barrio Cafe has a few dishes that I really love. The poblano pepper stuffed with chicken, spices, nuts and fruit (garlic, onions, pecans, apricots. I think there are a few more) is really good. I think it would be fun to meet other forum members. I often see them talking about it at other conventions. I assume we will be seeing most if not all of Jim's panels so maybe we could arrange to meet before or after one of them.

Oh, and for what it's worth I don't think I'll be dressed up either. There don't seem to be many roles for fat, balding middle aged men. I did threaten my daughter that I could wear a black wig and no shirt and claim to be Kull but she unfortunately has known me enough years not to be dismayed by my attempts at humor. She just laughs and says go for it.

A quick update for you all.

First of all, yes, we are trying to make sure everyone who wants to see Jim will be able to get into his panels. His solo talk will be Saturday morning and in the ballroom at the Sheraton that seats around 1,500 (where we will have several of the author guest solo talks this year).  One group panel will also be there on Friday. The rest will be in 500 seat rooms in the convention center, so those may reach capacity.  There's been lots of going back and forth with other programming departments over who gets to use the bigger rooms and we think we have it sorted out now. Its really been a big jigsaw puzzle this year with the number of authors we have and as the schedule comes together, pieces get moved around so I've held off publishing the specific day/time for those that might still move.

We are planning to do a signing each day, but those haven't been finalized yet.

I do want to note that our membership projections have gone up and there is the possibility that memberships may end up capped.  The price for the weekend does go up at midnight tonight, so if you want to save a few dollars, go for it.

We did announce some new guests of note, Paul and Storm, who will be doing a concert on Friday night with definite participation by John Scalzi and Pat Rothfuss (and possibly others).  You may have seen their video with George R. R. Martin showing up called "Write Like the Wind".

Any other questions, post them here.

You ROCK, Lee!

I remember a NYCC a few years back, when they boneheadedly shoved a panel that had Jim Butcher, Brandon Sanderson, and four other immensely popular authors in a room that seated 200.  Each one of those six authors could've filled that room five times over!  And it was scheduled at the same time as the other amazing-sounding SFF author panel, featuring Seanan McGuire and other awesome people.  There were a lot of disappointed fans at that con.  I'm glad PHXCC knows its audience!

I bought my event pass tonight before the price went up so I guess I'm in for sure. The Sheraton ballroom sounds like a great idea. Now people can just line up to get good seats rather than waiting to get any seat at all. Now I have to figure whether to spend the money to park downtown or ride the lightrail in.

Thank you, Lee!  The update is much appreciated, as is your scrapping for room assignments with the other departments. Just bought the full membership and am really looking forward to the author panels that are shaping up (Scott Lynch too? squeee!). Really great work on the con this year, thank you so much. You guys keep exceeding all reasonable expectations, and should be very proud of yourselves. See you all at the Jim show!

I'm heading up from Tucson, as well, and hopefully I'll make it to the Poisoned Pen on Thursday to avoid the long lines for signings at the con. It's gonna be a lot of driving...

Here's Jim's page on the Phoenix Comicon's website.  It shows which panels he'll be attending.

I can't seem to find any info on when any guests will be available for autographs, so I don't know if or when Jim will be signing there.

I haven't heard anything about that. I got a couple of books signed today. That was fun. I finally got to meet (as in "Hi. Nice to finally meet you. Goodbye.) Priscellie. Of course I'm going to have to change my name to Aahz now so she'll know who I am. I got to meet Anne Sowards as well which was fun. Of course I immediately called her Amie. I'd like to blame it on my old and abused eyes not being able to tell the difference between nn and mi but I've actually heard people call her by name before. I'll have to come up with another excuse for my mental lapse. I'm planning to be at the spotlight event tomorrow as well as the signing. I might even make a panel. I asked the people in line around me if any of them were on the board but they all looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language so I I didn't say any more.

I was racing around Comic Con the last two days and I had to leave early yesterday to drive back to Tucson. I was hoping to make it up again today, but it's not in the cards. I saw Cenphx briefly in the hall as I was racing out to my car and I believe at the Magic Systems panel - but by the time the smoke cleared you were gone.

The Magic Systems panel was a lot of fun, as was Jim's Saturday morning spotlight. He said we WOULD get a definitive answer about Mac before the series ends! I asked Jim what he'd like to see in Star Wars VII, and he said he'd love to see Han Solo being a jealous husband and grumpy father. I'd love to see that!

Unfortunately, I couldn't make it to the signing line, but I'm glad I still got a couple signatures on Thursday. Hope you all have fun today at the con!

I hope I didn't post this somewhere else already. My brain is still reeling from the con. I'm probably going back to day but I haven't decided for sure. I somehow overlooked the magic systems panel and missed it but I went to the Setting and Place in Urban Fantasy panel and laughed until I nearly cried. I don't know that I learned much about setting and place but Heather Brewer was hysterical and once she got warmed up Vicki Pettersson was funny as well. Jim was trying to stay quiet but Heather kept drawing him into the discussions and he had his usual humor. It was a lot of fun.

At the end, the authors were all asked where they were going next and they all replied that they were going to the drinks with authors event so my friend and I wandered over there. It was a blast. Jim was surrounded the whole night so I only got to speak with him briefly but he was charming as usual in spite of posing for dozens of pictures and being hemmed in until I'm surprised he could breathe. I got to speak with quite a few authors most of whom I've never read but all were very nice. It was a fantastic event. I even got another chance to talk briefly with Anne Sowards and Priscilla. Everyone was friendly. There are a couple of authors whose books I am going to have to try just because they were such incredibly nice people that I feel I should give their work a chance. Of course my brain was overheating and I usually thought about what I should have said or asked about ten minutes after I walked away from someone.

Now I'm trying to decide whether to go back today. I'm tired but I'll probably go. There are a couple of panels that look fun and my friend never got his copy of Skin Game signed so I might go to one of Jim's signings. I have a copy of Fool Moon that I wouldn't mind getting signed myself.

I closing in on 50 and this was my first con but I'm glad I went. I'll have to start planning to make this a yearly event.

Both of those sound like a lot of fun, I wish I could have gone! Did you make it to the Comedy's Hard panel on Friday? That was one I was very sad to miss, but the drive took a good two hours and just figuring out the layout of the con was ridiculous!

It was my first con as well (other than some small single focus events - X-Files and Buffy back in the day), and I had a blast! It was confusing and crazy and ridiculous, but quite fun. I realized that in the realm of nerds, I am a VERY SMALL nerd. I mean...there are fandoms at the con that I didn't even know existed. Plus, I am completely oblivious to the whole anime thing, which had a very strong presence.

That was you? I heard the question but I didn't pay attention to who was asking. Jim talking about Hans stunning his daughter's unsuitable dates made me laugh.

That was me! I thought it was hilarious, as well. I'd love to see overprotective Han! I figured Jim would actually have more ideas, but he seemed slightly flummoxed by the question.

I think that he was getting too many questions from too many different angles, everything from comparing Buffy the Musical to Dr. Horrible's Sing a Long Blog to which three fictinal characters he'd like to spend time with (I totally nailed this one. I said, "Lara" just seconds before Jim gave the same answer.  If you asked him that one on one and he had time to think about it, I'm sure he would have more ideas.

My first Con as well. I was only going to go for one day and have instead been here every day. It's been beyond amazing. I have been following Rothfuss and Sam Sykes and Myke Cole and Jim to every panel they are on. No matter they are talking about, it has been incredibly interesting and funny.

Right now I am awaiting Jim's panel on how to keep a long running series interesting and I can't wait for the Writing Rogues panel this afternoon.

For anyone who did not make it to the Author Batsu panel run by Sam Sykes, you missed out on one of the funniest things I have ever seen. Anytime one of the authors laughed, they had to do a shot of salsa. Rothfuss wore a wizard's hat throughout, Scalzi had on a lucha libra mask at one point. Myke Cole laughed while doing a shot and inhaled the salsa. Then he threw up.

I can't believe how great this whole CC was. Completely worth the time and money.

Aw, crap...  I've been looking at the Phoenix Comicon events, and the Spotlight on Jim Butcher ends 30 minutes before the Spotlight on John Barrowman starts...  My wife will want to line uip early for Barrowman...  This may cause... friction.
Hey Fleegle!!! It's was great meeting you at Jim's panel!

Yeah, that's true, there was a huge variety of questions. Having gone to the signing on Thursday and watching every YouTube video of past Q&A's, I really appreciated the diversity. It was a fun crowd. There's only so many times you can hear, "Did you really plan 20 books from the beginning? Do you play the Dresden RPG? Will we see the Jade Court?"

I agree with that part - I was glad to hear different kinds of questions. But I don't know how any of these authors are running from panel to panel to signing to event, all while answering questions and talking to people who come up at the end of the panel. Jim's been super gracious and engaging throughout. Kudos to them all!!

I haven't heard anything about that. I got a couple of books signed today. That was fun. I finally got to meet (as in "Hi. Nice to finally meet you. Goodbye.) Priscellie. Of course I'm going to have to change my name to Aahz now so she'll know who I am.

There's a costume shop in LA called "Aahs." The first few times my sister mentioned it, I always thought it was called "Oz." My brain must've started overcorrecting itself. :D

Lol. That makes sense. I was afraid you might be referring to the character Aahz from the old MythAdventure books by Robert  Asprin and Jody Lynn Nye. He was a demon from the Perv dimension.

I never made it back to the convention today. Too bad. I would have liked to attend the panel on writing Rogues. I am not all that interested in writing rogues but it looked like a really fun group of authors.

btw Priscillie I have a lot better stories if you ask me about dogs.

Wanted to throw out a thank you to Jim for signing my reproduction of Bob on Saturday morning.

I co-manage the Phx Comicon Fright House and used him in our witch room as part of the display. Thought I'd share a pic.
Can everyone see the easter egg I threw in as well ?

I had a blast. I'm glad I managed to make it to one of the signings and recieved nothing but complements on my attempt at a Maeve cosplay.
