Title: Topic/post upvote
Post by: Serack on December 13, 2013, 03:48:54 PM
Given: I know the administration is buisy and thus suggestions like this might not be doable.

I would love to have a button or some such to show how much I like a particular post or topic.

A quick and ignorant search for something like this that might work with our forums revealed...

like button mod (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=3029)
5 stars based post rating system (http://custom.simplemachines.org/mods/index.php?mod=2234)

You don't think that will start a trend of people creating alternate accounts to upvote their posts?

I hadn't envisioned it as a competition, although I did think of it as a bit of an indicator of significance for curating archival purposes.

More along the lines of, I wish I posted that!  I'll "upvote" it instead.

See this post (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,39948.msg1963918.html#msg1963918) for my inspiration.  Notice the timing.  I went straight from that to the suggestions section to post this (I got a little side tracked responding to the tapatalk post)

Was about to suggest the same thing, you beat me to it.  If it's possible in the code to add a Like Button (something Ive been seeing mentioned in threads more and more) and used that as a measure for what should be preserved in the Reference Collection or Display Case/Nostalgia Nook, it would be awesome.  But not being a Coder Ive no idea how easy that would be to implement.

"The building was on fire, and it was my fault."

This post is why we need Like buttons.

It's a recurring gag.

I did some research of old topics requesting more mobile support on the forums and came across this post from Prisc, which helps splain why things will likely remain status quo (and a good status quo it is)

Nope, sorry.  We make a point to install as few mods as possible.

Mod as in people or Mod as in code modification?

Code modification - the packages that you can download from the SMF website.  You can add some pretty awesome features to the boards, but they're not particularly vetted, so I think they're leery of installing them onto such a highly trafficked board.

(ETA:  We're also several patches behind the most up to date version of SMF.)

Sometimes you want to advertise a new project and a new post doesnt cut it... It would be nice to have the possibility to change the topic title by editing the first post like in many other forums. What do you think?

Unless I am mistaken, that is what happens. The OP can do it.

Ole,

Even though it says there is a similar topic, if you scroll down, you can still post it.  Just look for the Submit button.
