Title: Dresden Files RPG ACCELERATED!
Post by: InFerrumVeritas on January 23, 2013, 12:11:25 AM
The DFRPG Accelerated is a stretch goal on Fate Core's kickstarter.  The idea is to have a more accessible, stripped down, and easy to get started with book for the DFRPG.  The cost? $10 as a PDF, or available to all backers $10 and up on the kickstarter, along with all of the Fate Core material in digital form.

It's one hell of a stretch, but well worth striving for.

Check it out, pledge if you can.

This is awesome. Fate Core looks amazing and I really hope DFRPG Accelerated gets funded! 8)

To put the kickstarter in perspective, donating $10 to it now, before it finishes, provides you with digital copies of all the core rules, the world-building kit, and the setting compilation.  The amount of materials you get is roughly equivalent to buying over $150 in books in many other games.  It also gets us closer to the Dresden Files RPG accelerated goal, which you would also receive if we get there.

Getting years of potential gaming for the cost of a premium sub sandwich is a pretty sweet deal.
It also supports the dudes who make the DFRPG (and, coincidently, pays the day-job of the cool guy who runs and maintains this website).

Yep, the people from Evil Hat are awesome. I've been a backer for a month now and the preview material they released is awesome. :D

And an extra $5 on top of that $10 (total $15) gets you a physical copy of the Fate accelerated book, which is probably gonna cost at least 15 when they decide to release it. And you get all that other stuff that Orladdin just said. So basically for the cost of one book you get the book and tons of digital copies of other stuff.

Me and two other guys from my gaming group (inlcuding the GM) are also backers now. I will spend 145$ (I want the Strange Quintet + Dresden Accelerated).

They have 6 days to get 80 000$. Might work, but I think it will be tough...

They've gotten 20k in the last day or so.  I'm betting they manage it. Also, very happy I invested $30 in this Kickstarter.  :)

They have gotten 7500 today so far and it is still going up. I bet they reach the 325,000 goal today.

Hearing about the possibility of what is essentially DFRPG 2.0, I finally put $30 behind this.  I would like to put more, but with how random my gaming group is, and that this is a good two years out, $30 is all I can justify.  But hey every dollar brings us that much closer! =)

I put $60 in.  I want the print book of the Core and the Toolkit.  I truly hope to see the FA version of Dresden.  That would rock.

There is no difference. I have no idea why they made one limited. My only guess is they didnt expect to get as much funding as they did. but you are still able to get books

I suppose it did start at a goal of 3k and we're all  hoping it hits 400 k.

It looks like they split the USA and international orders.  The "sold out" pledge is for both.  My guess is they got a lot more international orders than expected, and had to tack on the extra $10 for the international ones to compensate.
Title: Re: Dresden Files RPG ACCELERATED!
Post by: Lavecki121 on January 24, 2013, 06:10:22 PM
Maybe but the one that is limited has an "Add $10 if outside US" fine print on it.

The extra $10 are for international shipping. In the beginning, you had to add the $10 yourself if you were backing internationally, but they changed it to the system they now have. I guess for our convenience. :)

And I hope they (or do you say "we" in a case like this? It's the first kickstarter thing I backed.) reach the 400k. It looks pretty good so far, I think. Pledges are still coming in regularly, and there are bound to be some people who will pledge at the last minute. Gooooooo people!!!

Here's hoping that they don't damage the company with the extras... Seriously, look at all the pdf books they are giving anyone who pledges $10 or more.  That's got to eat into their future sales.

The "limited edition" backer benefits are either the Consultation-- which requires considerable effort-- or the ones with the dice.

As for damaging the company, with the exception of the core books I suspect that the price of producing each of the stretch goals was built into the stretch goals themselves, so at worst they're simply making the vast majority of their money up front. It's a sound business model-- you only produce what the customers want, and you make all of your money up front, so everything you sell after the funding campaign is over is long tail profit.

Look at the 45$ level - Fred's Ink...

Reward selection
Pledge $45 or more
FRED'S INK: You'll get everything in THE BOOK level, and Fred will personalize your copy of the game. Strictly a prestige item! Add $30 for each additional signed book you'd like to include, or $25 for each additional unsigned book without dice. Limit of 5 additional books of either type per pledge.

Ok, it doesn't say what that personalization actually means. But as far as I can make out from that it means that it will at least be signed.
Title: Re: Dresden Files RPG ACCELERATED!

Yes but we are talking about a limited $30 reward level that is just the book. It is between the $30 non-limited book reward and the $40 international non-limited book reward. This is what we are talking about
Title: Re: Dresden Files RPG ACCELERATED!
Post by: Sanctaphrax on January 25, 2013, 04:08:03 AM
IIRC...

They limited the original book pledge because they wanted pledgers to specify whether they were USian or not. The idea was to cut down on the number of times they'd have to say "we need more money for shipping because you didn't read the fine print".

So they limited the pledge at the number of backers they had for that pledge, made two new levels called THE BOOK (USA) and THE BOOK (International), and encouraged people who had pledged at the THE BOOK level to switch their pledge to one of the new levels.

Befoere I make my first ever kickstarter purchase, though, I need to ask - Is DF Accelerated giving anything new to those who already have both DFRPG books?

We'll go briefer and broader on the setting, and take a fresh look at new ways to implement the ideas of the setting in a Fate Accelerated way...

Yes.  It's basically a Fate Accelerated version of the game, with a section on how to use it together with the standard DFRPG rules.

Current owners of the Dresden Files RPG should not worry. The game will not become irrelevant. While it won't be required in order to play Dresden Files Accelerated, we will be looking at ways that you can use copies of the DFRPG books to enhance your DFAE experience!

Still - Fred is taking the profit from the orders for the basic system to make the other books (good idea) but then giving away PDFs of those books to anyone who coughs up $10.

We're looking major supplements, call it 1000+ pages of professionally produced PDFs (with art and lay) - that he's giving away to 9100+ customers for $10.  A huge value, but I hate to think what this is doing to his bottom line.

For a mere $10 you get PDFs of the basic rules and:
The Fantasy Adventure (Tower of the Serpents)
Kriegszeppelin Valkyrie
Magic system toolkit
Wild Blue
Court/Ship
Burn Shift
Fight Fire
No Exit
The Ellis Affair
CrimeWorld
White Picket Witches
Timeworks
Extras Toolbox - 40,000 words all told (~130-160 pages)
Camelot Trigger
Shadow of the Century
Fate Accelerated Edition
Do: Fate of the Flying Temple
Fate System Freeport Companion
Young Centurions RPG
The Day After Ragnarok
Sally Slick and the Steel Syndicate (Novel)
Strange Tales of the Century, and
Dresden Files Accelerated (note that $20,000 will be going straight to Jim)

Each of those PDFs could go at the $5 - $10 range (more for the larger books), so that's a lot of profit that they are leaving on the table.

Yes and no.  This way gets FATE to 9,000+ people.  It strengthens the brand.  As long as the goals were priced with some profit in it, most people should be pretty solid.  9,000+ players of a system before the system is released/on launch is much better than almost any other RPG gets.

I mean, as of right now, they're averaging about $43 per person.  That means that people who pledged a lot are paying for people who didn't.  Even without the $20,000 Jim gets, they're still at $40+/person average.  Not bad for a game system.  And they have products to sell later and a massive fanbase to spur those sales.  If we look at something like GURPS for reference, a lot of those settings would barely sell anyway.  You'd really be at FATE Core+Toolkit for most, with a whole mess of Accelerated (Fate or DFRPG) thrown in.
Title: Re: Dresden Files RPG ACCELERATED!

Besides which many of the people will buy the actual books of the PDF's they like.  Fate just got an amazing boost and a significant amount of free money out of the deal.  Besides which they showed that they have a HUGE fanbase.  I see big things to come given that outside of the Mistborn RPG I may never run a nonfate game because my experiences have been so stellar with groups and Fate.  It meshes with my personal style very well, and most of what I've seen of Fatecore made changes I'd half made in my campaigns anyway(never used social conflicts because I didn't like them.  Messes with how I like social things to run.)  The free stunt idea is one I personally enjoy because stunts can do a lot to give character, which helps noobie gamers quite a bit.
In short YAY!

I think Evil Hat's marketing strategy is pretty smart, personally. The best way to look good is to be good.

As evidence, I present the results that Evil Hat is getting. They're pulling in oodles of money. And I've spent more than a week's rent on this Kickstarter, so clearly this stuff works on me.

Don't forget processing fees.  Between the two,  Kickstarter and Amazon (or Paypal for those who used that) take roughly 10%.

You bought a consultation?

And we're done. 10 098 backers, 433 275 dollars.

Awesome! Congrats to Fred and the Evil hat crew. This project was worth spending money on. :D

It's actually settled out at slightly more than that:

10,103 Backers and $433,365 in funding.

Presumably from a bit of last-minute stuff that took a little while to process.

No, I just have really cheap rent. I got a sextet.

A consultation would have cost me roughly a month's rent.

Yeah, I share the house with three other people.

And we're getting a really good deal.
