Title: Request help for finding recent topics here!
Post by: Serack on December 03, 2012, 02:38:24 PM
We have a great group here, and this sticky topic is dedicated to posts that say "could someone help me find a recent topic about this subject that I am burning to talk about?"  The idea being to both help cut down on duplicate topics, and increase the awesome sense of community we have here.

Here is an excellent example:

Anyone know if there is already a thread about Morgana's Athame? The one that Lea received at Bianca's party and that infected her? I wonder what happened to it and if there is a thread discussion out there already.

http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,35068.msg0.html#new

So if you have something you are burning to talk about, and you suspect there is already an active discussion about it but new topics are being introduced at such a rate that you are having trouble finding it.  Post here asking for help finding the appropriate topic for your ideas.

If a topic hasn't been active for a couple few weeks it is probably appropriate to start a new one, although it might still be productive to have someone help you find older topics on a subject so that you can read things previously discussed.

I think this is a great idea. Ive only been active on this board for about a minute compared to some of you and this is my first experience with the activity here after a new book comes out. At first when all the duplicate threads popped up, I tried on one or two to politely note the earlier and *still active* thread but I stopped because I felt like a presumptuous dick. But I really think having duplicate threads means possible brainstorming amongst members is lost because commenters are split among the threads. Since you've posted this sticky, the duplicate threads have not decreased, though its early yet. Do you think it would be worth a concerted group effort when we see a duplicate thread pop up on a topic being *actively* discussed elswhere to point the new thread to the old one?

Looking for info about the Molly pov short story and when it might be published. Is there  a short story specific thread? or section? In some thread I can't find now, someone told me the story would be in an anthology called Bombshells or will be titled Bombshells.... just looking for more info....like publisher, editor, expected release date...etc..or general reference area that keeps track of such things so I'll know when it will be released..

Is there a topic about the Bcouncil/Nemesis targeting Mother Winter specifically? Been thinking about it, didn't lea make a comment about trying to rid that which plagues us all, aka Death, which Mother Winter seems most similar to(also Cowl and the dark hollow)?

Sadly I didnt see one but I'm about to go to bed so felt like I should toss it here, thanks in advance!

It's based off a WoJ from GS
Quote
Is Lasciel going to make a comeback? The coin is still buried in the lab, right?
Her coin isn’t in the lab anymore. Her story is not yet over. However, both Lasciel and Lash appeared in Ghost Story, but not under those names.

I seek as much info as possible that deals with Nicodemus's knowledge of Nemesis.

I put together the major instances of Nicodemus talking about the BC in Serack's thread on cataloging some of the prophetical conversations.  It's not really a discussion thread, but if you're just looking for information, it should fit the bill.

Perfect! That was exactly what I was searching for, and I followed the trail of bread crumbs to the analysis of SmF in light of CD. Butcher truly never ceases to amaze me with the way he manipulates Harry and keeps him in the dark, an unreliable narrator: note how Harry assumes that 'contamination' = a member of the Church taking up a Denarius, but after CD, Nic's comments make far more sense as describing Nemesis. Dresden is so fixated on Denarians at the moment, and knows nothing of Nemesis, so his logic, which is based on a flawed premise, leads him to an answer that is far too limited in its scope. Most importantly, Nicodemus neither confirms nor denies Harry's assumption; rather, Nick's remark about common interests makes perfect sense in light of what we know about Nemesis and Empty Night.

I don't even know which thread would address this.... Mab or Molly thread.

In Cold Days, Mab said she was once human...which means she had a soul.
But, in Winter Knight, Harry says he's not worried about 'soulgazing' Mab because she is Fae and doesn't have one... So what happened to it?  Did it go bye-bye with her Free Will?

Early Woj seems to say Fae don't have it ... they can't act out of character...seemed to be reinforced in Cold Days.  But, isn't Mab's choosing of Harry as Winter Knight sort of a Free Will decision?

Where is it best to discuss this Soul/Free Will/Human-to-Fae issue since it affect both Molly and Mab (and probably other characters) ... I'm sure the topic is out there somewhere...likely in multiple threads.... help....  :-\

I well I am embarrassed, I can’t find the threads I know to exist. I would like a few Dresden Files–like reading suggestions please.

Seems I can’t get out of being dragged along to the Mall of American this weekend with a gaggle of female family members. So I will likely just park myself in Barns and Noble and do some reading while the womenfolk shop.

Thanks people.

I listed some good reads in this recent topic (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,35798.0.html) and included a link to the 28 page sticky in the media forum that is dedicated to this subject.

Lilylis-- I think I remember on Elegast's Index of Theories thread that he has an entry for the theory that Elaine carried the infection to Aurora. I cant remember whether its under Aurora, Elaine, Infection or Nemesis. But you should be able to find it there. A lot of the theories there have a link to the thread with theory in it. I dont know if he's got a link for the Aurora-Elaine theory but its worth a look. Sorry I couldnt be more specific

Yes. It comes from an old thread by Serack, there's only a single line concerning Elaine, so starting a new one would make sense.

If a previous discussion has been autolocked due to being more than a few months old and you want to discuss something that had been mentioned therein, starting a new converstation is great.

Eventually, that topic will probably be moved into the DFRC, and even if it were not locked, if you just wanted to discuss a narrow aspect of that topic, it is better to do so within a new topic in the general spoilers section because that is where new discussion should be taking place.

I guess the key word here is "recent."  Starting new topics is generally only discouraged when there are already recent, active discussions on the same subject.

Hi! What I am looking for is a topic that handles the fact that Outsiders are eveything that come from beyond the border of faerie.
According to Harry NN is friggin massive and faerie is only the part closest to mortal world, it stands to reason most of the NN is considered to be outside. There most likely is a topic about this somewhere. Halp?

There have been tons of topics about Mother Summer's and Mother Winter's names, but has any1 seen a topic where they have included the snake and the hawk that appear in mantles of the ladies in the discussion?

Hey, with the revelations about the nature of Nemesis and when it infected particular people, I was wondering if there are any threads looking back at Lea's behavior after contamination?  I just finished rereading GP tonight, and realized it may have been painfully obvious that Lea had been changed from before to after the party.

I'm new here and REALLY enjoying the Dresden Files books! I've just finished book ten and feel like I missed what happened to Lash.
I know she did something to help Harry escape with the vampire "queen".
Is it explained anywhere? What did Lash do such that now she is "gone" (i.e. no more Lash shadow in Harry)? And I assume Harry no longer has hellfire capability? Bummer ...

thanks,

As Bob explained at the end of White Night, Lash is gone because she directed the damage from Vittorio's mental attack towards the sections of the brain she inhabited rather than the ones Dresden used. I can fetch the quotes explaining this if you wish.

As for whether she's gone for good, read on and find out.

I'll be the first to admit that it's a long time since I read the boards, and it's probably my own fault, but I am having trouble with the shorthand arcane initials in common use.  (SAI's)  Is there a complete list of these coded abbreviations somewhere, hopefully in alpha order, that I could print out and keep at hand while reading the topics?  I hope someone can help!  I have all the books in audio form and I've listened to all of them several times, but somehow a lot of the abbreviations stop me cold!

Looking for the WOJ on the list of who can take down Mab. The one that includes the point about the Whole White Court and if they did they woudl get her power.

Hmmm.  In terms of pure, raw power, several who have appeared or been mentioned in the books could pull it off, though neither side would really "win" as much as "continue to exist."  Plus, the sudden absence of Mab would do freaking HIDEOUS things to the earth.  But here's who has the necessary horsepower do it:

o   Titania--though it would be a coin toss.  Almost literally.
o   The Mothers (who wouldn't)
o   The White Council.  As in, ALL the White Council.  Every wizard on the planet.  And they'd need her Name.
o   Drakul.
o   Ferrovax.
o   The Red Court--again, ALL the Red Court, though their odds wouldn't be good.
o   The entire White Court--very, very long odds on that, but if they actually pulled it off, whoever took Mab would effectively control her power.
o   Cowl (if the Darkhallow had succeeded).
o   A union of the old Elders of the Black Court.  They were freaking scary until the Whites arranged to have them hounded down by mortals.

All of that, of course, assumes that Mab is standing there alone, outside of Faerie, and not commanding an entire nation, literally millions and millions and millions of nightmarish creatures of every description.  Which she does.

There's a REASON that when Mab said, "Sign these Accords and abide by them," people listened. :)

Here you go.

Is there a thread talking about blood and iron. I just finished Cold Days and was wondering about how iron effects (sp) the fae. If iron does is blood just not concentrated enough because there was lots of blood splatted on the fae also how does that work for the "rawhide" made up of flesh and blood.

The theory goes Vamps every 3, fairies every 4, and Denarians/Archive every 5.

The counterargument is that fairies and vamps both appear show more often than that, if usually not as plot-central.

There's no complete thread that Im aware of, though the topic has been broached in several other ones.  The general consensus on DR was, I think, that it is likely too hostile to matter at present, given what Nic said about it in SmF and also the island's purpose is.  That being said the Council traitor in TC was able to open a way on the island itself, but may be like Cowl's Way in WN where only a person like him psychologically can open ways to that region of the NN.  In either case the idea is that whatever protections the Island has are likely far more potent than anything Lea would bother with.  It is my personal theory that her Garden now connects to the Guest Quarters in Molly's place, which Harry said feels very similar to Home to him, which is what it would take to link to the same place.

Regarding his old house and the castle that is now on it, that is pretty solidly Marcone's.  His home is completely gone, and any magical connection would have bee purged by the fire.  Its entirely possible, btw, that the fire removed the relevant connections to link that location to Lea's garden, and so now it could not connect to the same place because it has changed too much.  Between that, the very real monetary investment, and the fact that enough people now live there to build a solid threashold, I dont think Harry can make any real claim to it other than "I used to live here and hate change so Gimme."

Also, the whole importing a Castle into a major city is straight out of Gargoyles, which is one of the cited inspirations for Dresden, or at least Marcone, Morgan, and Murphy.  I would be surprised if the endeavor will be purely for the obvious fortifications.  In Gargoyles they move the castle to break a 1000 year old curse by bringing it "above the Clouds."  I very much hope there is similarly an underlying motivation for the BFS HQ.

Has anyone started a thread about the SG book trailer yet? I wanna talk about how that differed from how people imagined the books. (I, for one, never thought about Harry rolling his R's in his pseudo-Latin spells.)

I'm looking for a (maybe not so) recent topic pertaining to Listens-to-Wind's offer of `anger management help' and any possible theory threads which that could involve.

A combination of things in SG and what I've heard about PT (book 16) have got me intrigued.

Thanks.

There is a list compiling all the various instances of Harry Naming Things (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,40120.0.html) yes, but nothing relating to Goodman Grey.  Interesting thought though  :)

Not that I can recall, and a search turns up threads w/people talking about the SoI, id-Harry, or Harry/Murphy dreams, but not one thread specifically based on the Molly/Blue Beetle dream sequence.

I was wondering, has anybody speculated as to whether other Norse gods, such as Thor or Loki, might be lurking in the background behind Odin? Also, now we've met Hades, what about other Greek/Roman gods like Apollo or Artemis? Is there existing discussion about this, and if not which would be the most suitable board to host a thread?

Well, the appropriate forum would be the 'spoilers forum' as Hades entered the picture in SG, after all.

There's one thread discussing about whether Odin is Thor here. (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,40421.msg1984734.html#msg1984734)
No one specific thread about Loki, although the potential of Goodman Grey as Loki or Odin has been discussed here. (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,41909.0.html)

No thread particularly based on Artemis or Apollo...but several on Hades & Mother Winter & no threads seem to cover the topics you specifically asked about, that I can see.   :)

However, forum member wardenferry419 did a really cool list of comparisons &/or suggestions (future books) here (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,39743.msg1957033.html#msg1957033), under the thread title of "Possible Patterns".  That thread is now locked, however.   :-[

Super cool post; glad you pointed that one out! We could do some fixing now that SG's out. But it's pretty cool how close those summaries were! Wrong character becoming the new KotC, wrong context for Lash and/or Lasciel, but pretty darn close. The subjects were right on the money! How much had Jim already revealed at that point?

Can we either resurrect that thread or I start a new one on similar lines?!

Hmmm, most of the child topics would be over a month old... Here's one of the best that I know of (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,41327.0.html).

As to Demonreach...  I think there is a reference topic discussing parallels with the Hebrew concept of "the deep," And I have an old pre-CD theory that it is where the benevolent powerful beings of Navajo belief went (and where the Skinwalker should have gone but chose not to, thus becoming malevolent)

It's called Peace Talks so searching for that might be helpful: I'll leave it to forum gurus like Serack to pluck the WOJ links out of thin air "just like magic" ;)

I did attempt to add this to the Wiki but the resident dog-in-the-manger didn't like me being "speculative" (based only on a post on Jim's website and Jim himself saying so on Reddit—quote of the day "what is this Reddit thing?") and nixed it. :'( Maybe things have cooled down sufficiently we can try again?

I have noticed that a number of readers don't like the way the Winter Knight's mantel hammers the rape/kill message to Harry.  It is more than a little disgusting no matter how Jim tones down the description of what the mantel is doing.  Even though Harry found a new and creative way to channel the mantel's impulses in Skin Game for his own purposes without letting it control him, the Winter Knight's mantel is a nasty piece of business.

Contrast this to how Lashiel's shadow affected Harry.  In Death Masks Harry just heard a voice and some laughter before he sealed the coin up in concrete and some spells.  In Blood Rites there was a monologue where Harry says he thinks he used to be a better person in the past.  I think that was a subtle clue that Lashiel's shadow was talking to Harry's alter id.  Harry involuntarily calls up hellfire but little else happens.  In Dead Beat Harry make the choice to call up hellfire and he meets Lashiel's shadow.  In Proven Guilty we see Harry becoming angrier.  In White Night he almost loses control of his new found anger before he figures out how to handle Lashiel's shadow.

The way Lashiel's shadow worked was subtle, everything occurred behind the scenes.  The Winter Knight's mantel is overt and many readers find it disturbing.  I'm not sure how Jim can make this situation any better, other than finding a way for Harry to ditch being the Winter Knight.

I think this is another reason why the last two books haven't been as popular with many readers as the earlier ones were.

I think some readers are upset by the idea of everything in the supernatural world having some kind of mantel.  Like, if Mab and the other Queens of Faerie have mantels, perhaps the Leansidhe has a mantel, perhaps Eldest Gruff has a mantel, Odin has a mantel, the Gatekeeper has a mantel.  The idea of everyone and everything having a mantel can be more than a little annoying.

However, I'm talking about something which Harry is actually dealing with; and it is something that many readers find disconcerting, at best.

However, rethinking about how Jim might handle the situation, instead of Harry finding a way to ditch the Winter Knight job, Harry will receive training from LTW which allows him to either ignore or transcend the urging of the Knight's mantel.  I think that might make Mab realize she will never bend Harry to her will and also decide she no longer wants Harry to be her Knight.  What would happen after that I couldn't guess, but it's one way for the situation to be resolved.

Agree.

and also decide she no longer wants Harry to be her Knight.  What would happen after that I couldn't guess, but it's one way for the situation to be resolved.

Disagree. As I've said before elsewhere, I think Mab wants an Ender - an intelligent commander who can destroy the enemy, who thinks for himself, but at the end of the day reports to her. Also, as much fun as she has with Harry, I think her best idea for how to de-Knight him would be to kill him and she'd have no qualms if that was what she thought was necessary. Seeing as how Harry's narrating the series, unless he's doing so as a ghost from the other side, I don't see it happening that way. I see him maneuvering or negotiating his way out at some point. He's getting smarter and wilier book by book.

Is there a thread discussing the similarities of magic?  Specifically whether the type of magic used is a result of tthe element itself vice the result of teaching.  Ex:  Molly is outstanding at creating veils.  Does that mean that she inherited this gift from Charity or is it specific to her alone?

I ask because I've noticed a particular pair that uses the same t type of magic:  Elaine and Thorny.
Title: Re: Request help for finding recent topics here!
Post by: Quantus on January 20, 2015, 07:54:48 PM
I cannot recall any thread discussing how particular talents (ie viels, certain elements, etc) are passed.  There have been long ones about how the Magical gift itself is passed, mostly focusing on the whole random vs matrilineally, etc.  We know that there is /something/ specific about a person that affects whcih types of magic they can use; Luccio is the perfect test case for that, but now that you mention it Ive never seen the why/how of that part discussed.  Per WOJ magic talent is in most ways just like any other natural born talent;  it still takes training, a no-talent person can still train decent skill, and a prodigy can still suck without practice, etc.  So my guess would be that it is an odd and inexplicable mix of Nature vs Nurture, just like talent at sports or music.

Still, Id be interesting in seeing that discussion  :)

Not specifically, at least not for a while that Ive seen, mostly just because we havent gotten anything new on that topic for a while.  The closest thing I know of is a thread a while back about having fae ancestry, which eventually led to a theory of how latent fae blood might be the source of Mortal Magical talent

There is no such WOJ as yet.  It is a commonly presented theory, based on the master/apprentice lineage that McCoy has leading directly to the original Merlin, but that is the only thing hinting at such a relationship, and it's requires that either all such magical lineages are kept to blood relations (unlikely), or B) McCoy's family, specifically, prefers to keep it in the Family and also keep that fact secret.

Nothing like that that I can recall or find right now, but that's far from definitive...

Jim does say something about the blood being important, but he says so in a way that suggests it's part of the act of sacrifice, rather than that heredity makes any kind of difference.  "Gave Demonreach blood" is different than "Gave Demonreach his blood."

Need a WoJ. He's asked about things/people not being what they first appear to be and he says something to the effect that there are a number of things/people that aren't what they appear to be... and suggests that we might find some of these out in the future.

A link to that comment would be very useful.

With all these plots that are going on, with Mab and Lea obviously playing games against one another, with archangels sticking there nose in, with vague supernatural entities that live on islands, how are all these conflicting interests, where Dresden’s getting pulled in different directions by all of them, how are they going to play out in the future?

I know that a lot of the folks that are generally perceived as bad guys aren’t necessarily, there are several who are currently perceived as good guys who aren’t necessarily, and we’ll continue to have those fall out over the next several books

That's one I hadn't seen. I was thinking of another one, in a video I saw where he's being asked -- I think it's about Mac's 'secret identity' -- and he gets a little evasive and smirks a bit as he admits that there are several characters running around that aren't all they seem.

I mean, this one is good, and thank you...but it's not what I was looking for.

I thought I saw something about a WOJ stating that Harry was planning on keeping Bonnie away from Bob. I've tried searching the forums and came up blank. Anyone know if this is a thing?

Hello guys. I used the search function in the forum and google to try to find a topic about Harry's guitar playing skills, but couldn't find anything. Does anyone know if such a topic exists? Would it be okay to create one and talk about if it will show on future books?

It was extremely recent, something to the effect that he'd have a traditional Father-holding-a-shotgun conversation with bob at some point.  Iirc it was because she already has waaay more knowledge than she knows how to manage responsibly, and Bob is not a good role model for Responsible.

First:  Welcome to the Forums!
Second:  I dont think so, not currently.  The forum has an auto-delete feature that cleans out old threads periodically, depending on the sub-board.
Third:   Certainly!  Sounds intriguing.

I'm trying to find a recent topic in which there's a WoJ that the Jotunn were the previous defenders of the Outer Gates. Anyone know where I can find either the topic or better yet the youtube video or AMA where Jim says it?

It's a common working theory around here that the Jotunn were the previous defenders of the Outer Gates, but I doubt it's been confirmed by WoJ.  It would have made a big splash in the threads that hasn't happened.

There was a really good write up on the meaning of Water in magic and how it was understood as a classical element, the author later did a short write up for the other elements in the same thread as well. Can't find it despite using the search option. Anyone got a link to that thread?

there was a thread a while back regarding Lacuna being the Tooth fairy... I was looking to see if any of the discussions touched on who would have been performing her duties while she is in service to Harry.  Does she have a relationship like Leann & Mab where someone would step in and cover for her?  If so, who?   Or does anyone care?
Title: Re: Request help for finding recent topics here!

Classically speaking, I think Tooth Fairies were a race of fae, not an individual like say Santa Claus.  Though I think they were also more sinister (tooth trolls), so it may or may not apply.  Given that she was bound to somebody else's service before Harry, Im guessing there is no conflict of responsibility, either she can get away enough to accomplish it or there are others to take up the slack.  In fact, I think Winter Law and/or Fairy Nature would require her to, Harry doesnt have the power to make her break previously standing oaths.

Great timing on this.  Is there already a thread on who the "Brit" in demonreach is?  One that lists out the WAG's that have been made?  Because we know 2 things from WOJ:  It is not merlin, and someone has already guessed it online.  Seems like it might be worth it to get a list and take a poll.

Hi and welcome!
Go to the DF Spoilers section. Read a little the thread titles (at least the newest ones) to see if someone has initiated a thread on the same subject of you and if not, begin you own hthread with a title like "A theory about Peace Talks" or something like that. If for some reason you have read the first chapter. evey comment about that should be spoiler tagged.

No recent discussion thread that Im aware of.  There are WOJ's relating to it if that helps, and the actual mention of it in the Books happens in Ch 15 of SmF.

Quote
#387 “You mentioned that all of the Knights of the Cross were of royal heritage. Why is this? Does being royal make you more qualified to be one of the Knights?”
It doesn’t make you qualified, so much as it makes you /responsible/. It’s a small but important distinction.
I’ve seen a well-done argument that defined goodness, in the Dresden stories, as power balanced by responsibility–and evil as power without accompanying responsibility to restrain and control it. I liked it.

Roger...thanks...I'm re-reading Small Favor now...I know Sanya and Shiro were both descended from Royalty...I don't remember if Michael knew he was...or if they were going to research it...if it was a pre-requisite to being chosen as a Knight then I wanted Murphy to be descended from Royalty because I wanted her to be the wielder of the Sword of Faith (probably not going to happen now)...but now Butters is a Knight...so is he also a descendant of Royalty?

At the end of SmF Harry gave molly geological homework, she found that her line goes back to Charlemagne. No word on Murphy, Susan, or Butters (though the argument could be that Susan had linage back to The Red King, if that counts).

Nothing specific or recent that I know of, though the topic does come up from time to time in various discussions, usually of fate, branching universes, implications of Death, or speculation of the extents of Gard's power/insight

there was a really awesome thread about Harry and his moral delima's some time last winter? Really compelling stuff about how/why the coin he picked up was kept hidden despite his apparent good intentions. the reality of keeping things swept under the metaphorical rug for appearance sake vs actually confronting his own corruption. a Really meaty OP. I would have sworn it was already nominated to be moved to the reference but, I found nothing there and wanted to nominate it myself. but now I can't find ;( help?

Everyone’s chatting about Cowl and Kemmler all the time, but this is far from the only mysteries about the Dresden Files.  I’ve only been here for about two months, so I’m curious – have any of these topics been discussed at all in length?  I’ve searched and not found anything.  I’m not really looking to start new topics (well, except for the unlikely event that no one’s discussed it and it’s a really good topic) but am really just curious to know what the general consensus is on these things, and if there’s any really juicy fan theories.

There was originally one other item on this list, but I found the discussion on Thorned Namshiel’s coin.  Interesting discussion – I had certainly considered everyone in the helicopter, but had not considered a member of the Fomor as a possible recipients, nor that Mab might have snagged it and have it on ice somewhere.

-   What really happened to Milwaukee in 1994.
-   Presuming it’s not “nothing”, what lies beyond the Outer Gates.
-   Mother Winter and Summer’s most powerful name.
-   What the curses “Hells Bells” and “Stars and Stones” actually mean.  I actually find the implication of which curses are used by which people to be really interesting.
-   What allowed Malcom Dresden to contact Harry during Dead Beat, and why he hasn’t spoken since.
-   Any metaphysical significance to Harry’s Halloween birthday or Thomas’ Valentines Day birthday

At one point or another I've seen them all discussed or joined in myself. you wanna hear about one of them, make a thread for it. I doubt any random discussions on them were saved. I can think of at least one example for each of hthose off the top of my head though.
*Milwaukee vs PT, Mab closes the circle on an entire city for instance.(hope te see that one in PT repeated)

I thought HARRY dug it up at the end of one of the books and gave it to Forthill. It seems to be someone's will that those things are in circulation ... and it could be both sides' will. I am sure Forthill did not release it, but I am also sure the Denarians have Vatican contacts.
