Title: Cold Days Book Club - Chapters 31-45 **MAJOR SPOILERS**
Post by: Priscellie on November 27, 2012, 12:12:39 AM
The Ghost Story Book Club seemed to go over well, so here's Cold Days' equivalent!

Welcome to the Cold Days Book Club!  This is intended to allow us to theorize and discuss as we read through Cold Days.   Discuss whats happened and how amazing it is.  Discuss what you think is happening in the current set of chapters.  Or even theorize about what may be about to happen.

The rules are simple...
You can discuss anything you want about Cold Days, so long as it does not exceed the chapter limit set for this particular thread.

Chapter Limit -- Do NOT discuss anything after chapter: 45

I feel remarkably stupid for not remembering that the Wild Hunt would be a factor. But not Harry master of improv, huh?

About here I got this feeling that this is all coming together.  This is Butchers BEST BEST work.  LOVE IT.

I concur.  While most all of the recent books, especially Turn Coat and Changes, have been excellent, I still feel that none of them quite equaled the peak of White Night.  Until somewhere in this set of chapters, when I realized Jim had, in fact, finally outdone even that masterpiece.  And by a not insignificant margin to boot.  I would love to discuss the details of what is going on, but that will have to wait, cause right now I have to read the rest of this book, forum discussion, food, sleep, and homework be damned!

Seriously, laying the personal smack down on Santa in order to hijack the freaking Wild Hunt to take on an army of outsider's laying seige to Demonreach.  The sheer ballsy badassery inherent in that senario is positively palpable.

Considering the conversation with the Mothers, I wonder if Harry's mantle as Starborn would have gone to Winter as well, if he had made it into the stew pot.

Also, during Harry's conversation with Mother Summer, she mentions that it is possible to stay ones self despite powers that mold you, and that she both is and is not referring to Harry. Could she be referring also to Maeve (maaaaybe) or Molly (definitely)? Harry always seems to have an easier time doing the right thing for himself after he has helped someone else do the right thing in situation parallel to his own.

No, the Wyld Hunt is just something that happens. It doesn't have to be summoned.

And Fix of course.

Was no one else wildly, fantastically happy to finally see the outer gates? See the Gatekeeper doing his thing? Magic Carpets? Awesome age old battle for the universe? thousands of dying fae and unlimited numbers of baddies? I started laughing maniacally and didn't stop for about ten minutes. Probably one of the cooler parts of the book.

The Outer Gates? Less fantastically happy and more 'whoa, whoa, whoa, holy cr*p'. Ages-old battle is freaky ages-old battle. But Rashid's flying carpet was unexpected and funny, yeah.

I usually only sort-of browse this forum, but I had to put this out there: Mother Summer said that Mother Winter hasn't left their cottage much anymore since she lost her walking stick. Might her walking stick be the Blackstaff?

That is the prevailing theory, gone into greater detail in atleast a half dozen other threads.

Quote from: Cold Days
"You are no true Knight of Winter, manling. Once I have decoured you flesh, and your manyle with it, I will bestow it upon someone worthier of the name. I should never have given it to Mab."

I want to discuss this quote from Mother Winter. Do we think MW means that she made Mab the WK and Mab than "worked up" to being Winter Queen? Or, did she just mean letting Mab pick the new one. I'm inclined toward the latter, but I've seen it mentioned in a theory that Mab became the Knight when MW lost her walking stick. Also, what do we know about who picks whom the mantle goes to? IIRC Maeve picked Slate, then Mab picked Harry, and MW implies that she would pick the next (although that could just be because she was going to kill him herself). Is it purely whoever the closest queen to the Knight when they die, or is there an order to it (ie Lady, Queen, Mother, Lady, etc.)?

I think that it means that as Mother Winter, she has ultimate authority over who gets the mantel, but left it in the possession of Mab to grant.

I got that impression too. For the Hunt to reach earth the one to lead it had to be summoned.  I assumed whoever summoned the outsiders also summoned the Hunt.  Or had someone else summon it.....probably Ace.     Also it is taking place on Halloween....remember Molly gave Harry his coat as a bday present.

No, the Hunt just tends to go wherever it wants. It only had to be summoned to Chicago specifically in Dead Beat.

sorry, but that makes no sense... I agree it might go where ever it's led in the NN.... but DB is all about how the Hunt works in the Dresden verse. There hasn't been a hunt every Halloween on Earth. Why would only Chicago require summoning.

And Cold Days is all about how Halloween is the big day where creatures of the Nevernever come out and play.

It doesn't need to be summoned to come to Chicago, I meant the Necromancers were summoning it to make sure it was in Chicago. Even if the Wyld Hunt comes to Earth every year, it doesn't do the Necromancers any good if it's in Scotland.

good point in that Halloween is a time when NN creatures come out to play and potentially to strengthen themselves.  But many NN creatures cross over anytime they want...doesn't have to be Halloween. And I got the impression the Hunt runs around in the NN whenever...not just Halloween.

If the Hunt doesn't need to be summoned to earth why does the Erlking say to Harry at the end of DB

Quote
Called you forth a mighty hunter tonight. One that has NOT walked this earth since time gone and forgotten. ...... because you pleased me with the calling of the old hunter, this night you may go free.
