Figures. My best friend lives in the Chicago area and that would've been a perfect excuse to get on a plane. So, naturally, she and her fam will have moved by then.

Excellent. I was hoping there'd be a Chicago signing.

:'(   No sign of Australia huh? Sigh.. I'm so alone out here.

( Although on a happy note I recommended Storm Front to someone who appeared really interested so hopefully a new Dresden convert ! )

This was...unexpected.

Still very, very excellent for myself, but didn't expect a second signing in the area after being blessed with one last year.

Might spend the seekend up there since I haven't done that in a while.

Yay!  I guess Chicago can get some extra love because it IS the setting for the Dresden Files.  The whole family will be in costume there with our 2.5 month old dressed as Toot Toot.

(this puts us in the running for either best or worst parents.  I will let you decide)

I vote best.  When I eventually have kids, they will be costumed in geek splendor at the slightest excuse.

I have a quick question on asking Jim spoiler laden questions.  At signings if it safe to assume everyone has read the previous book?  For instance I want to ask
(click to show/hide)

Would that be something acceptable to ask in the Q-A or should I wait until getting the book signed to ask in semi-private?
Title: Re: Signing in Chicago, IL (Skokie) 11/30/12

Might be best for semi-private.  Or before you publicly ask your question, ask if there's anyone who hasn't read Ghost Story, to ensure you don't catch anyone off-guard.

Better yet, phrase it without specifics.  Ask Jim when he decided the identity of the killer and the circumstances.

Kinda glad it isn't in Chicago proper.  Friday nights up there are traffic intense, to say the least.  Not overly familiar with Skokie, but I'll be up that way early in the morning to scope it out, get my book/number then probably catch a flick, depending on my mood and what is showing nearby.

Not planning too much ahead of time other than showing up, honestly.

Shibby, you're from Kalamazoo?  My wife and I both went to K College.  I think Skokie is far enough that hotels shouldn't be that much of a problem.

are you near - Cincinnati ? Lexington ? Louisville ?
I'm driving from Cincinnati, Ohio to the Kansas City Cold Days signing & can take 1 or 2 passengers. NO SMOKING, no people who smoke. Why K.C. when Chicago is closer ?  CHAIRS in an auditorium (K.C.)   :vs:  hanging from the ceiling in a bookstore (Chicago).
IF ya wanna ride, send Facebook friend request to - Mary Bridgeford (Ohio) & reference on message-     Cold Days book signing in K.C.

Kalamazoo, eh?  Me and the GF are driving in from the Detroit Metro area.  Unfortunately we're making a long weekend out of the trip, so carpooling isn't an option.  :-/
... But it should be a kickass time!

Does anyone know whether or not there's any McAnally-Like pubs nearby?  That'd be a fun detour after the signing for more conversational hangings-out.

I know some places, but I don't think they are terribly close to the Skokie area.  I'll check into it.

I'll be at the Chicago event!  We'll be getting in just in time for the signing on Friday night, but are going to spend Saturday wandering around town - we'll likely hit some of the sites mentioned in the books again.

We're staying at a Holiday Inn Express in Arlington Heights.  Probably about a 20-25 minute drive from the signing (dep on traffic), but decent rates.  And free breakfast!

Hi All.

I posted this in the main 2012 Signing thread, but thought I would ask here as well.

I am planning to get the book for my boyfriend to get signed.

I know that I have to purchase it from Barnes & Noble, but does that need to be a brick and mortar store, or will an online purchase be sufficient?
Title: Re: Signing in Chicago, IL (Skokie) 11/30/12

You can call and ask the store.  I called about buying a book at another Barnes and Noble (because who can wait 3 days, really?) and they said it would be fine as long as I bought the receipt with me.  So I imagine ordering from BN online would be ok, but best to double check

This. Always a good idea to check with the specific store. And (I hate to have to say this, but it's needed) get the name of the person you talk with, because I've heard a few stories of the staff person at the event claiming a different policy. Not many, but still.

Thanks guys.
I'm lucky because there are 4 B&Ns within 20 minutes of me, so if I can't get the book one place, I'm sure another will have it.
I'm hoping that once the 27th rolls around that I can do the "pick up in store" option.

That would be great!  I'll be with at least 2 other people, probably wearing matching "Order of the Large Cooking Pot" black t-shirts.  Otherwise, you'll be able to find me by looking for my 6 ft. tall, rail thin, 14 yr old daughter!

We won't get there until about 90 minutes before the signing, because we're not leaving here until a little after noon.

Just as am FYI...

Just talked to the bookstore.
The ticketing for the signing begins at 9:00 AM tomorrow Friday 11/30.
That is when you show your B&N purchased copy of Cold Days (with receipt) and get a ticket (numbered) for the signing.
There will be only ONE ticket allowed per person (so you can't get multiple tickets and give them to others).
The signing itself is at 7:00 PM CST.
If you do not have a ticket, you will not be allowed into the store for the signing.

Alas, I was kind of expecting that.  Thanks for the update, I'll see if I can talk my wife in letting me go to KC, but that doesn't seem likely either.  :'(

I seem to remember somewhere that there was a way you could order a signed and personalized book?  I looked in the store link but didn't see one.

Thanks again for the update and I hope he feels better soon.

My understanding was that folks who were going to attend the Chicago signing would be sent signed bookplates, though I might be mistaken.  I'll poke Jim and ask.

To answer your question, you can order signed books through Jim's local independent bookstore, Dog Eared Books (http://www.dogearedhalf-pricebooks.com/).  Call or email them, and they'll give you the skinny.  I'm not sure how often Jim goes over to sign for them, and it may take a while for the order to be processed at this stage, given all the hubbub of the holidays, but things should calm down in the new year.

This would be pretty cool, if it could be arranged.  How would this be handled?  Would it require me do dig out my receipt or something?

His default dedcication on them should be "Sorry I missed you! -Jim Butcher"

I figured if we could provide the receipt, they would go from there.  I heard from Priscellie that a reschedule probably will not happen.   :(

I was actually speaking with folks at the store today about the upcoming Brandon Sanderson signing, and mentioned this one to them. I was told that they don't see it happening, but should a tour happen for his next book, they will get on the list for it.

Is there an official say in what is to happen? I would gladly contact Dog Eared Books for something I guess. The problem is that I already bought the book... if I had to buy another copy...it will be kind of a waste. I know that this is like 2 weeks later but I kind of had high hopes to finally see Jim live, so I ordered a book through Barnes and Noble so I could go to the signing. I could have bought the book from Dog Eared Books, but I figured that I would rather meet Jim and let him sign it than to have it virtually signed. Is there going to be a replaced date at all for anywhere near Chicago? Or should I just wait until the next year and have Jim sign 1 copy of Cold Days and the new one?

I saved my receipt also. But the question comes down to, how do we get these book plates if Jim is not coming to Chicago? He can't possibly track us all down...

:( I think I lost my receipt last week, after buying the book on release-day at the Skokie B&N, I hope I can still get a signed book-plate

It would be a bummer if kc got rescheduled and IL didn't get any love

I mean, the stories are based outta Chicago, that's gotta count for something!! Lol

Not gonna happen, alas.  KC was easy to reschedule, because Jim lives half an hour away.

Ah, I thought you were talking about the tour stop.  Book plates are still a question mark.  Not sure how that's going to work.

Should I give up on the book plates?
