May I just say so that it can be passed along to the powers that be how thrilled I am that the KC signing is with Rainy Day Books again?!  Not only does it support a local bookstore, they run the smoothest signings I have ever seen.  The venue is comfortable, they have a great sound system so it doesn't matter where you end up you can hear everything, and their method of numbers for the line makes the wait be something pleasant.  They call you up in groups!  No waiting in line for hours, even if you have a really late number you can just sit and talk or read until it's your group and then you stand around for 15-20 minutes.

I will have to drive in from Omaha, NE to get to this signing so I have to plan when I'm going to leave for this.  How early do people start to arrive for a book signing like this?  How long do you think it will run before its done?

I really don't remember if your number is based on the order of pre-order or when you get to the venue for pick-up.   I'd say call the store, they are very nice and very helpful about these events.  Where you fall in the order really affects the time you need, and might change your mind about how early you want to be.  Maybe an hour to an hour and a half for the Q&A, depends on how much he riffs on the questions, then a short break while he girds his loins (well his wrist anyway).  Figure on at least 500 at the signing if last year holds steady.  They call up groups of about 50, and each group is maybe 20-30 minutes before the next group gets called.  I rolled out around 9:30 last time I think.

At least it's an easy drive, many a time I've driven up to Omaha for a show at the Sokol Underground. ;)

You'll want to look for the free parking that's about a half block before the Unity Temple, it's almost across the street from Barnes and Noble.

Does anyone remember from last time, how kosher it was with them to have previously-purchased books in the signing line?

They don't have a problem with it.  But if you have more than Cold Days and one other they like you to wait until the end so it doesn't hold up the line.  I've seen people with 6 or 7 things, and as long as you wait, and his wrist hasn't fallen onto the floor, then it's not a problem.  Although a big please helps too. ;) ;D

I will be making it to the Chicago signing, and hope to hit a couple of the Dresden sightseeing stops with my daughter and a friend who didn't make it the last time.  8)

Alas no Donuts though.  I asked Sharon and she said they were trying to eat more healthy.  Maybe I'll bring an apple.  Make that two, so Jim can take one home.

Yes, I'm just going to run by for it.  I already cancelled the babysitting helper so I'll only have 20 minutes to get there grab it and get back to the skating party.  I'm not going to wait until the rescheduled to read it...two days has been bad enough! ;)

The folks from Rainy Day Books (those who set up the KC signing) said that they talked to his publicist tonight and set the date for the kc reschedule. It's obviously very tentative as we haven't heard from Jim or his wife as to how he is doing, but they needed to lock down the site ASAP. They'll send out more info as they get it.

An upsetting, miserable day for both Jim and Shannon, my prayers are with them both. Here's hoping and trusting that Jim's medical team can ease and resolve it as soon as possible. Sheer misery.

No matter what one's mind may have intended to do, once in a while one's body just plain jumps the queue and outvotes all the other person-pieces. Laid out dog sick is absolutely a rotten thing to have to go through.

Driving to the Plaza for this event was a horrible experience for me.

Please do not hold future events in the busiest part of town, where I have to look for buildings with no street numbers, while dodging pedestrians, in the dark.

When I know it's going to be someplace unfamiliar, I always look it up on google maps first, streetview is great for finding "no so random" buildings... :)  (Hint from an out-of-towner who doesn't particularly like driving in large cities.)

I'm pretty sure the venue is determined by the host Rainy Day Books, and I know that the Unity Temple on the Plaza is their go to venue for when they expect a large turnout. It seats 1200+ and is connected to a parking deck. I know traffic is bonkers there but I'd rather be patient with traffic and pedestrians than get shoe-horned into a rather modestly sized (though still awesome) book store.
I don't know about street numbers, but it does have a lighted Unity sign after dark and the tower is visible from quite a ways off during daylight.

I only got transplanted to KC for work about a year ago, had mixed feelings about it, but when the realization hit I'd actually be able to make it to signing events as long as I live here that was a big fat check in the plus column.  :D

Feel better soon Jim!

Unity looked like it would have been a great venue for a Q&A, I hope to make it back for another one one day. I got the call from Rainy Day about 2.5 hours into my 3 hour drive, very nice people by the way, finished the drive because I wanted the book! A big thanks to laura118b for pointing out the free parking garage a block and half away. And poor Jim, hope he feels better soon, he deserves a vacation.

You're welcome.  I didn't realize there is one that attaches to Unity on the right side when looking at it.  I haven't driven in from that direction before.  Man, did I get turned around inside of there coming in from the back.  If you park in the attached garage you come in a floor off by the organic restaurant.

Wow, no kidding too soon.  I called Rainy Day and they said he's gone back in the hospital.  They are hoping to know more around the 13'th.  They said they are trying to work on getting some books signed for the people who wanted to give them as Christmas gifts, but they don't have any idea yet about him speaking.

At least it's the hometown event, it's makes it far easier to hope it doesn't get cancelled out right.

And here's a good holiday wish...get better soon Jim, being that sick is a horrible way to spend your holidays.

Well, after two trips to KC from Wichita, to see Unity Temple and other Jim Butcher fans, but no Jim Butcher, I'm pretty certain I can't make a third.

Several reasons for that, including some mentioned above.  Foremost, it's especially difficult for retail employees to get time off from work during the holiday rush.  Next, Country Club Plaza is bad enough to reach during a typical rush hour, but during the holiday season, only the diabolical would suggest it.  And though RDB's staff was there to advise us on the 29th that the signing wasn't happening, they DID say the 11th would happen, and there was nothing on the website today to indicate otherwise.

At least a dozen other people likewise didn't get the message.

I don't blame Jim Butcher for any of it. Getting well is all I ask of him.

If there's a chance he'll ever make a trip to Wichita or OKC, perhaps I'll get my chance for an autograph.

But, as long as Rainy Day Books is involved, there's not a snowball's chance in July Texas heat that I will.

The heck?  That's deeply messed up.  I'm bringing this to Jim's publicist's attention.  RDB never should've given folks the idea that the event had been confirmed, because it never was.

However, I would point out that we stated pretty clearly on the December 6th news posting on the website that the events hadn't yet been rescheduled: "Hopefully, he’ll be able to reschedule one or both of the missed signings soon. We’ll get you that info as soon as we have it!"  Also, there was no event listed for the 11th on Rainy Day Books' (http://www.rainydaybooks.com/event/2012/12/12/month) website.

Um, I don't know what to say.  Like my post above said Rainy Day very specifically told me that the 11'th was not happening.  Even at the first "signing" when I went to pick up my book they made it clear that they were hoping for the 11'th but to check with the store first.  They told me, and everyone else that was in line at the same time, to sign up for the newsletter or call the store for more info.  That's how I found out he'd had to go back to the hospital.

cheshirecatsith, I'm sorry this happened to you, but I've never had anything but good experiences with RDB in 20 something years of living in KC.

Edit because I can't spell worth a crap at 4:30 am. ;)

That's exactly what I heard them say at the original event on 11/29 as well. I've been following this thread and the RDB website every few days since.

Best wishes to Jim to get well soon!

That's nice. That also smacks of saying, "nuh-uh, because I was there and they said this," when you weren't there with me, and didn't hear what the woman told me. Either on the phone, at RDB at 5:45, OR at the venue, half an hour later.

I'm sure nobody in the KC area thinks a whole lot about heading downtown after work for a book signing.
Someone who lives in Omaha, St. Louis, or Wichita? They're out of luck.

Same from me.  Again, I don't hold him responsible.

But all the same, I essentially spent over $100 for an unsigned copy of Cold Days.

Perhaps if I put it and my galley of Turn Coat on eBay, I can recoup my lost wages and gas fees.

Nobody said that to you at all.  And heading to the Country Club Plaza at Christmas is a big deal for anyone, in Kansas City or not.

I don't know who you talked to there, but the four people I have dealt with all said the same thing, that they hoped it would be the 11'th but it wasn't confirmed with Jim's people yet.  You can look back and see that I posted that on the 8'th.  They have been clear at every step that they didn't know, and would pass along info as they got it.

I'm sorry this has left such a bad taste in your mouth, but if the number of people that mistakenly thought the signing was on again was only about 12 out of over (given my line number) 300, I don't think that really points to a huge problem.

Poked Jim to confirm this was legit.  Huzzah, it's on!

I'm signing a ton of bookplates this week, I assume for Chicago.  The KC event is real.

I'm glad to hear this is happening. Can someone make sure to record it and either post a transcript or put it on YouTube for those of us unable to attend? I promise to make cookies for whomever is nice enough to do this!

I'm very glad that Jim is feeling better and that the event has been rescheduled but I can't help but be disappointed that a 3 1/2 day notice just isn't enough time that I can get approval for leave from work to drive to KC.  :(

Any word of Jim possibly coming by Chicago in the next 6 months?

Nothing to be done about that, unfortunately.

Yeah i was a bit taken back by the short notice. I'm goign to try to make it though since i only live 20 minns from the Plaza. Unfortunately, not everyone who planned on coming are as lucky as me.

I want to try and do this with my iPad, if it's allowed. I have no other camera. It seems like all the other locations (and Jim) are cool with it being recorded, so i'll give it a shot.

Yeah, it sucks.  I wish Rainy Day Books had announced it before yesterday.  Nothing to be done, alas.

Not going to happen, alas, but my understanding is that he's planning to hit Chicago in the "Skin Game" tour, whenever that ends up being.

I'm also planning on making just an audio mp3 recording like last year.  I'll send it on to via WOJ to anyone who wants to transcribe it.

Yippie!!  I'll be there.  Now I have to try to formulate my question like I'm talking to a member of the Unseelie court.

You might call RDB, see what you can do there. I'm sure they'd be willing to arrange something.

Sadly, I won't be able to make it. It's too late to do a scheduled vacation day, and I don't want to a.)burn a sick day so early when I'm not sick, and b.)leave my team at work down 1 guy on a day that's often pretty busy.

I tried sending them an email, but haven't gotten a response back yet. I'll try calling them when I get off work and can use my phone.

Hey, if someone is recording, be sure to send a shout out to the SHOV!

I just start my digital recorder and let it roll.  Last signing I zapped a link to the great and powerful Serack and he found someone to transcribe it.  So as long as it gets transcribed you can read it no problem.  I could post it whole somewhere but it's a huge file, and slicing it up is too big a nightmare for me.

So I guess the guest admission pass doesn't let the guest get their book signed too? This a pain.

It was AWESOME.

Jim is great.  The venue is terrific, and Rainy Day Books does a great job.

Thanks everyone.

Had fun, and Jim released some details about the steam punk series and the next Dresden Files. I will review the video tonight and upload it tomorrow to YouTube and link it here.

Sorry this took so long. Sick baby in the house took priority ;o)

There are two parts, and for some reason the stupid iPad glitched and didnt catch the last 5 minns of the Q and A or about 10 mins in the middle. I apologize

Also, the place was actually packed. i was surprised with the short notice and the fact the weather had turned bitterly cold through the later half of the day locally.
