Title: "Awaiting Approval"?
Post by: xebo on May 14, 2012, 02:45:56 PM
What does this mean? What conditions cause a thread to need approval? What does that imply?

Don't worry about it; usually just a glitch.

It means that for whatever reason, the message tripped a spam trigger.  The next time a mod gets online, he or she will give it a look, then approve or delete it.  The slight lag is annoying, yeah, but it helps us keep a lid on spam!

Sometimes bots get in a post, and if members hit links they can be exposed to malware, porn etc.  The approval adds a layer of protection for you all.  I personally check for this twice a day, so unless there is a problem, the wait should never be a long one.  If you do experience a problem or a longer wait?  PM me.  I look at my PMs at least twice a day as well unless I am off line.  (Then I am in a cold sweat.  LOL)

I have had this happen to me several times.  I have a work around that allows me to post what I want when I want without having to bother the mods for approval.  It happens to me pretty much any time I start a topic that has a URL in the body.

First I copy all the stuff I wanted to post in the topic that is "awaiting approval."  I usually do this from the edit screen since it probably has code in it that doesn't copy well otherwise.

Then I start a new topic with the intended title and some filler text in the body.  (if you ever see me post "nt" it means "no text", it's my standard filler.)

Then I go back and edit the new topic, pasting the material I copied from the topic that needs approval.

Finally I remove the origional topic so the mods don't need to bother with it, and I get the satisfaction of knowing my gawdawfulimportant thing I had to say is said immediately rather than having to wait a full 2 minutes, or however long it takes blaze to check for it.

Edit:  Speling isn't my strong point.

Thanks Serack, I feel stupid for not having thinking on that before. Eh, if I open a new topic whatever with just the filler and then I edited it with the text with the link, is the same, right?

Yah.  Frequently when I get hit by this, I've spent 10 min writing up something that happens to contain a link.  Which makes the copy/paste steps kind of necessary to avoid spending another 10 min rewriting the post.

I understood, but my case (the one CWG mentions) is different. Is a thread that opens every week and has an introductory post. So I only need to copy it from the previous thread. Another option is dong the thread except for the link part, and add it later. Thanks again!

If there are two, delete one, CWG.

Steps 14 and 15 in my explanation in reply number 15 are an attempt to describe how to delete the extra post.  The "Remove" button is in the same area as "Reply" and "Quote"

Really, you don't  have to do the copy/paste parts if you initially start the topic knowing that you will have a link in it that will need approval.  I wrote the "guide" with the assumption that you have already generated the post without considering the "Awaiting approval" whammy, and now have to go back and rebuild a new one without the wammy.  If you are posting expecting to be hit by the "wammy" and want to avoid it, you could always start with step 5, go through to step 11, then just type what you want your post to say, with it's links.

I would include this "guide" in my older forum code advice thread (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,31158.0.html), but the "awaiting approval" function serves a purpose, and I only wish to support subversion of that function so far...

Interesting,

I just posted a new topic in the internets section with links in it, and forgot to post filler text without links first to avoid this problem, and it went straight up without awaiting approval.

Maybe administration quietly played with this function somehow.

Edit:  Just had another topic of the type that used to get hit by this wammy go through (7/5/12)
