Most of us knew it was coming, but now it's official.

Sad, but official...   :'(

Here's to Jim!  May this year bring him Peace, Prosperity, Success to his next venture, and more Persecution of that Putz, Harry Dresden!

I heard Jim state this at the signing. It's sad that I won't get to see him around, he's a great guy to talk to, and an amazing public speaker, but he deserves some R & R.

What?!?!  Where did I put my torch and pitchfork?

*Deep breaths*  Alright.  I do love watching his Youtube Q&As after a book comes out, though.  I'd be satisfied with an interview or two (or maybe a public appearance somewhere close to home? *nudge, nudge*).

Here, you might not have seen this update to the interview list

First Update in a while.

These don't have much about the Dresden Files per say, but the Geeks Guide has some really cool anecdotes about Jim's father, and the NY Times profile says a lot about how Jim's EmberMUSH days helped hone his craft.

The Geek’s Guide to the Galaxy phone interview (http://io9.com/5843677/jim-butcher-opens-the-dresden-files-in-episode-45-of-the-geeks-guide-to-the-galaxy)
NY Times profile (http://www.nytimes.com/2011/09/24/books/jim-butcher-one-of-the-authors-from-ambermush.html?_r=2) (focuses on Jim's time playing AmberMUSH)
Short Story Geeks phone interview (http://shortstorygeeks.com/2011/09/episode-eleven-jim-butcher-interview/)

BTW we are lucky.  The first thing Rothfuss says at signings is "no videos or audio recordings, I don't want this on youtube"

I think Rothfuss gets nervous about how he sounds on recordings. He almost didn't put up a video of him reading to his son for Heifer International because he was afraid of how it sounded :D.

That was because he was reading a book to his OMGADORABLE son, and he was unaware his voice jumped an octave in those conditions. :D

He's been to Canada a time or two, but never beyond that.  He doesn't travel well, so overseas isn't really in the cards, as far as I'm aware.

Personally, I'd be happy if Jim didn't bother with convention appearances at all from now on.  The short story side has been fairly productive & I suspect the later release of Cold Days, has more to do with Ghost Story getting released rather late into the year.  (Compared to what was planned.)

If Jim needs self fulfillment, the Internet can provide a better experience than most conventions, since you don't need to dress in clean clothing, you have more time to consider your responses & you can take a bite into a sammie, between posts.

(Or worry about the lack of deodorant smell.)

Plus, airports can get stressful, especially when there are issues.

I know fans like a meet & greet, but I think Jim has well earned the right to cut back on this sort of thing.

Keep in mind that Jim LIKES doing cons; remember, he's a fan as well. It's just that going to so many of them together wear on him, as it would on anyone. But he's also savvy in regards to PR—authors benefit greatly from having a physical public presence, especially one as amiable, entertaining and interesting as his. It's what really hooked me into his books; I saw him at a con in '07, and between him and Shannon, I moved from simply liking his books a lot to thinking they're extremely good people who deserve our support. It's always a good thing when you can help reinforce people doing right.

It's a balance, in the end: between his own fan-ness and keeping a public image, there's got to be a happy medium.

^^^^^
THAT

I first met Jim in 2010 at NYCC ( Along with Shecky,Priscilla, and well MOST of the Mods) and it's hard to explain just meeting Jim the man, not the "product" had a VERY positive impact on me as a man. I met Shannon January 2011 at a con with Jim and seeing the two of them together you have a model of what a marriage SHOULD be.

Like Shecky said Jim LIKES cons as a fan Himself, but as a Professional they are draining EVERYONE wants to stop him on the show floor to sign something chat ect, and he never says no, bu he really just wants an hour to browse for himself. I have actually been part of a group "shielding" Jim so he could have a little time to browse and geek out and it was always "Let Jim have an hour and he'll be happy to chat and sign stuff after over at X place" Jim is THAT guy. They kicked him out of DragonCon for being a FIRE HAZARD so he took the line outside and signed there!

I can't say this enough I LIKE his work, but I LOVE him as a person, I love Shannon more, but then again so does he  ;)

I totally agree too.  I've been to many book signings in my life from Stephanie Meyer to Clive Barker, and I've had a wide variety of experiences.  Some neat, some disappointing and even some mortifying, but none of them even compare to the one I went to to see Jim.   I had just been sent home from Argentina with a back injury, and you could say that I was pretty down.   Well, my best friend in an effort to cheer me up told me that Changes had come out and that the author would be signing books at a B&N in LA.  Now, at this point, I had only read the first two of the series and that had been about a year before.  I would have read more but circumstances prevented me.  So I just didn't really know what to expect, but it sure wasn't what I got.  We didn't really even talk about the book all that much or at least not that I remember.  Someone got him to tell the story of being cursed by a witch doctor in Brazil, which is an absolutely roll-on-the-floor hilarious story.  It was all such an emotionally uplifting experience that has never been repeated by any signing before or since.  I remember walking out of the store not only with my first real smile since I couldn't remember when, but as a fan for life.  It really made a big different at that time in my life.  And that's not even mentioning the staggering amount of books he signed that night.  Very few people asked him to sign only one book, many had a box, and he never turned them away.  Now that's generosity.  A man like that deserves all the respect his fans can give him including time off.

I was lucky enough to be able to attend a couple of his signings. They were both a blast. At the first one I even got a few minutes to talk to him one on one. I doubt that he would remember it but it certainly made a lasting impression on me. Having said that I think doing the convention and signing circuit every year could get grueling. Even more so if he decides to start a second series again. I would rather have a happy, healthy and well rested Jim (I left that second comma out just for you Shecky) writing the books that we all love. I hope I get the chance to attend a convention or a book signing again with him there but there's no rush.

I thoroughly enjoyed the two signings I attented for the Dresden Files. Jim was generous with the book signings, as someone mentioned before, and was just a friendly and interesting person to speak with. I would love the chance to be able to just sit down with the man and talk casually and pick his brain (and not necessarily about the Dresden Files).

I've had the pleasure and it's worth every second. We talked about everything BUT his work, geeking out about books he loves and him telling me,STERNLY, that I had to watch Stargate SG-1. You will hear me and Shecky say Jim (and His wife Shannon) is more then a great author, hes just good "folks". Having been able to just "hang" with him had a very positive effect on me, personally, in a time when I really needed a bright light. I'm also very honored to have been able to tell him so as well.  :D

Jim and Shannon were both incredibly generous several years ago at Romantic Times to meet with a contingent of fans that included a group from the Charlaine Harris fan club.  All of us who participated in that gathering came back feeling we had just met two really good new friends.

Jim and Shannon were part of Rachel(Starbeam) and my wedding(they signed a copy of CHANGES used in the ceremony), not only THAT they sent us a card for our first anniversary. Who else do you know of that will do that for fans, granted fans who have had the chance to hang out with them several times. A few of the times we saw Jim it was an "off" day for him and you would have NEVER been able to tell. Just a great couple, very talented and so down to earth and approachable. I can't say enough.

Jim will also be doing an AMA ("Ask Me Anything") on Reddit (http://www.reddit.com/r/dresdenfiles/comments/10v4vh/mod_message_jim_butcher_ama/)'s /r/fantasy section on November 20th.  The AMA will be posted that morning, and folks will have all day to come up with questions and "upvote" the questions of others, so the best ones bubble to the top.  Jim will start answering questions around 7pm or 8pm Central.

Much obliged Ms. Priscellie!  I'll definately be hitting the Skokie-Chicago signing.  Planning to record again as well, if allowed (or can do it covertly enough)

Recording is almost always fine; just be careful if he does any readings from the book. Spoilers are Bad Things. :)

Agreed.  Although, I have yet to be at a signing where he does a reading.  They have usually gone straight to the Q&A, which is cool of course.  However, should it happen, I'm a fair hand at editing and/or chopping the spoiler material out prior to posting on something like you tube.
I'm hoping to ask him about his new series, myself.  Get some details, such as it were.

If his face doesn't light up when you mention the new book, I'll be seriously shocked; he seems to be having an absolute ball writing it.

Awesome :)  I do have a ton of things to ask about the Dresden Files, of course, but I'm afraid I would edge into the new book territory.  I plan on having read it at least twice prior to the Friday evening signing.

Arrrg!!! The closet one is in Kansas City. That's like 20 hours away!!!

*thinks about whether or not a plane ticket would be worth it.*

Air Tran is having some sales from DC to KC...maybe from other cities?

Hi All.

I am planning to get the book for my husband to get signed.

I know that I have to purchase it from Barnes & Noble, but does that need to be a brick and mortar store, or will an online purchase be sufficient?

Call the store and ask.  I think B&N.com should be fine, but best to make sure, so you're not taken by surprise!

Pre-sale numbers?  MGRB aren't putting the book on sale until Tuesday morning.  I know the first numbers go to the riders of the San Diego Butcher Bus...

I was speaking about the people who get the book at B&N, or how ever they get the dead tree verison.

Title: Chicago Book Signing
Post by: sequestris on November 29, 2012, 06:06:19 PM
Just as am FYI...

Just talked to the bookstore.
The ticketing for the signing begins at 9:00 AM tomorrow Friday 11/30.
That is when you show your B&N purchased copy of Cold Days (with receipt) and get a ticket (numbered) for the signing.
There will be only ONE ticket allowed per person (so you can't get multiple tickets and give them to others).
The signing itself is at 7:00 PM CST.
If you do not have a ticket, you will not be allowed into the store for the signing.
