Title: Thanks to all our great fans!
Post by: Robert Wolfe on April 24, 2007, 07:11:39 AM
Hi all,

Well that was fun!  I just wanted to post a brief note thanking all THE DRESDEN FILES fans, new and old, for being so supportive of the show.  I know I speak for David, Hans and all the other writers, Paul, Val, Terry and the rest of our amazing cast, plus all the directors, producers and crew who worked so hard bringing THE DRESDEN FILES to life when I say that you guys have made all the long days and longer nights worth it.  We're very happy with the ratings we got in a brutally competative timeslot and we've really enjoyed reading everyone's comments here and on other websites.  Thanks for watching, thanks for buying at iTunes, thanks for listening to our tree thud to earth in the forest.

I also want to salute all the hard-working folks mentioned above.  To Jonathan and Stef up in Toronto for putting together and managing our amazing crew, two more talented producers a guy could not wish for.  To David and all the writers in L.A. for sending one wonderful script after another up north.  To Alwyn, Franco, Joanne and their amazing teams for making us all look good week after week after week.  To Orst and his great drivers, especially Jeff, for driving my sorry ass around for four months.  To Clint and Darren and everyone at Keyframe for deliving terrific FX under a considerable time and budget crunch.  To Steve and everyone in post for putting all the pieces together at the end.  To our sensational cast and many talented guest stars.  And to everyone else who contributed to making THE DRESDEN FILES' first season so great.

And of course, thanks to Mark and Erik and everyone at SciFi for putting us on the air and to Kevin and Barbara and Sandra and everyone at Lionsgate for trusting us with making it for them.

And finally... last but not least... thanks to Jim for writing such great books and trusting them to Hans and me to bring to life.  And of course, muchas gracias to Hans.  ¡Lo hicimos, mi amigo!

Hopefully we can all do it again next year.  As they say in the language of my people:  God willin' an the crick don't rise.

Thank you, Robert!   You and your team put together a fantastic series that kept getting better with every episode, and the episodes you penned were among my favourites.  I wait with bated breath for news on a second season!

Excellent work on the series, Robert, from you and from everyone else. It was a little sad watching Paul close the office door at the end of the season; here's hoping we hear soon when he'll be able to open it back up again! In the meantime, good luck with your work on the 4400 (that's what you said was next on your plate, right?) and thanks for keeping such a good rapport with us going on the board!

I echo the "thank you back at ya" of the other fans here.  It's been a long while since I've had a TV show that I simply had to watch.  As a fan, it was a wicked fun season.  Looking forward to Season 2.

Yeah well.. I'm a sheep so I'll chip in as well.

Thanks for entertaining us every week, giving us laughs, maybe some tears and overall just three great months with a great new series. I can't express how much I wish for a second season.

Give our (as if I can speak for the rest of you guys, sorry) best wishes to the rest of the crew if you get a chance to see them. Hope to see you guys again maybe this fall :D

My sincere thanks to all concerned for their hard work in producing one of the best shows I've seen in a long, long time.  My hat is off to all of you.

And, Robert, thank you so much for coming on here and answering so many questions.  You've given us all a glimpse into the making of a series that we would never have gotten anywhere else.  In particular, you made me feel as if I was a part of it all, and that made watching the end result even more satisfying.

I had posted this in the Season 1 folder questions for Robert, but it more appropriately goes here -

It's only been 2 weeks without Harry and Bob on Sunday nights, but it seems like a lot longer than that.

I just wanted to add my belated thanks to Robert and crew for a great show. Hopefully we'll hear soon that we'll get more.

Yes, it was different from the books but I really enjoyed your interpretation.

You done good!

Thanks to you and the rest of the wizards who made this show a reality, I've discovered an excellent author, read the entire book series and totally enjoyed it, and found something on television that was good enough to stand up & be heard about!  The show is/was spectacular - you & everyone involved made it possible to look forward to Sundays instead of dreading them as the last day before returning to work. THANK YOU!!!
PLEASE let there be a Season 2!! (and if there's anyone else we fans can contact to make it happen, please let us know!)  :)

Robert, if you see this, I really loved reading your message to us, and I echo all that people have said here. The show helped me discover the books and I love both very much, and it has been a long time since I cared about any show. My passion is Babylon 5, but the last show I was a big fan of was Farscape. I also want to thank all those you thanked, and I hope to all the Powers That Be that we get more. I noticed we got some good ratings, so let's hope. I will be watching the SCi-Fi Space closely.I also appreciated your work in Andromeda, that was a great show until they canned you. I am a New Yorker, 56, and just wanted to tell you, Paul, Terrence and Val, and all else, much success and more of the world of Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. Love and peace to all, Connie Colvin

*grins*  My thanks to all of you who made this wonderful series!  As a huge fan of the books, I approached watching this series with much trepidation, but you guys pulled it off brilliantly and I am now utterly hooked on it.  I really do hope that Sci-Fi renews "The Dresden Files" for a full 5 year run (to start with, at least).  *crosses everything that will cross*

Thanks for putting up with us, giving us all that yummy insider info and joining in in our rabid fan-ness! Thanks for staying so true to the spirit of The Dresden Files that we love so much! Thanks to everyone you mentioned, thanks especially to the actors who brought our characters to life and the writers who made a world for them to live in!

Thanks for being so kind and patient with us as we griped, moaned and asked way more questions than any sane person should.

Thanks for clogging up the forums so badly on the premier night that I couldn't log on to save my life!  ;)

Thanks for being a regular face in this little pocket of cyberspace despite what I'm sure was a rediculously hectic schedule.

And thanks for being a really cool guy! ^.^

Geez Robert!  You scared the bejeezbus out of me.  I thought you had word there was no season 2!  We owe you a huge thank you and to the cast and crew for bringing Jim's vision to the small screen!  It's been a thrill to see Harry and his world come to life.   Sundays are not the same now that the season is over.  We're just waiting, hoping and praying for a second season..we'll keep the faith and the light on for you.

Oh yeah, and if you see that Mr. Cage guy, tell him thanks for me - OK.  ;0)

Hi Robert! I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed watching The Dresden Files on the Sci Fi Channel. I'm still hoping the network will get enough support from loyal fans like myself to request for a second season. Well, your show was so cool and I would rather watch it than any day time soap opera any day! I've already signed an on-line petition for season two and I hope the letters I will sent will make a huge difference. The show deserves another season because I'm into the whole science fiction/fantasy genre & it's a great escape from harsh realities of daily lives. Any way, I'm really rooting for The Dresden Files to return!!! Great job putting together a talented cast & crew!!!! :)

Robert, I haven’t watched TV like this in years. The Dresden files rocked.

Thanks Robert for helping to produce such and awesome show. And who is the Jim Butcher fella? He wrote this stuff? Awesome...I’m going to check into his books. (I usually listen to books during my commute, but I notice they have them in audio)

I came here trying to find out when the Dresden Files would be coming back. I learned that there will be some info soon (may/June) and I expect it will be back for a second season. Why wouldn’t it. It was the best series on.

Initially I was interested in Battlestar Galactica but for what ever reason I could not get into that show. I watched the first 8 hours of 24, but ultimately I was thinking, so he get tortured, escapes, blown up, tortures someone else, a nuclear bomb goes off in LA, calls his mom....and its not even noon. Um....ok!@

The Dresden files were very cool. I had a standing date on Sunday eve to check out the new episodes. The only other show I was interested in was Deadwood. I hope you don’t get pummeled like they did.  Now I’m back to taking care of the family, gaming and playing my French horn, but Ill be keeping an eye out for seasons two.

Keep up the good work, Eric

From your lips to God's ears!  Head on over to Buzzy Multimedia for the audio books.  Up to book four is out on audio!  I just finished up listening to book 4.  I'm almost done with Jim's latest book release and dying that I have to wait a year for the next one..

And like others I have to say thank you too Robert, for giving us a show that I was glad to have advertised to my friends. That I was glad I'd said 'Watch this when it starts' even before I'd seen any of it. That could have back fired on me, but it didn't because you produced a quality show.

So thank you. ;D

Thank you for a brilliant beginning for a new series, "The Dresden Files".  The scripts are very good, the acting is superb, and the cast melds well together.  The production is wonderful!  I'd been reading the books, and heard that Dresden would be making its debut on television.  I have been there for each airing and each re-airing.  Each episode brings more depth to each character.  I had not expected the series to directly follow the books and novels.  Television/broadcasting is too commercialized for that and time compresses with the funding that is necessary.  I am not an avid TV watcher.  However, when something is well done, I will tune in.  There are so few programs of worth any more.  I sincerely hope that you will extend this series out for at least three or more seasons.  My best regards to you and everyone affiliated with producing such a well-crafted series.

Three or more seasons? That remains to be seen. Honestly, you'd think TPTB could get of ftheir collective fundement and give us some news.I think that every other series on Sci-Fi knows what's going on except us.  Hells bells, the goverment works faster. This is torture, tortment and travail, all rolled into one large, icky bundle.

How were the numbers?  Viewers, ad revenue, cost per show, that sort of thing?  Heck, how are the DVD pre-orders going and how is it doing in re-runs now?

I'm nearly finished watching the Dresden DVD's with two more episodes to go.  Awww nuts, it's so depressing knowing that it ends there since it has been cancelled.

I was so excited when I saw the DVD in the video store, I snapped it up right away regardless of the cost. I was simply overjoyed that I had spotted it!

It's because of the tv series that I became hooked on the Dresden novel series.  Now that I have gone through nearly two books, the show makes a heck of a lot more sense and carries a deeper meaning for me.  It is a lot more intimate and I feel so sorry for Harry after he has been through so much and gets so little in return....

You know, it makes me want to be his friend, sit by the fire and lean against him, while listening to him ramble on how his day went.  Wish I could that for him....

Heck, I just want to give Harry Dresden a big hug.

Many thanks to everyone involved for bringing Harry to life, he is such an awesome guy!

I tell you this, not because I think it makes me any diffirent than any of you, but just to let you know HOW MUCH I ENJOYED WATCHING Disc 1,2, and 3 of season one that I have just finished viewing, having found, at the video store.
I have spent the last 2 hr.s registering, and being 'found' by registration on my dial up computer, just to
THANK JIM BUTCHER, Paul Blackthorne and the all the actors, directors, camera persons, and all the crew, for this serries.
I don't know how to personally write the 'big-wigs' on line, or Mr. Butcher, but I am a hard working person who thinks you should take the time to thank people for doing great things !
I can't afford the Sci-fi channel, so didn't know Dresden existed!, can't afford high-speed internet, (it costs more when you live out in the country), so can't watch the Podcast, or watch any extras, or write very much...since it takes too long to send and receive.....
But I want to let them know somehow ....that I am facinated with the series, and I'm doing my part to spread the news about it; and will be buying Jim Butchers books that started the series!
Thank you...everyone, especially Jim Butcher, for your facinating immagation, and puting it in print! Can't wait to find more of The Dresden Files at the movie store and get your books!

Thanks for the series, I very much enjoyed it but I may have a bad directory on disk two.

Seriously, it was a fine series,  and I hope  it finds a new home.  It probably won't but maybe the petitions and DVD sales will help. I guess SciFi wants to do it's weakly disaster/ Ghost reality show more than drama.

Ok, I'm probably going to upset a lot of people now. I recently bought the DVD set, having not had the chance to see the series on Tv (we don't have Sky, just Virginmedia). I've been an avid fan of the books for two years now, and was pretty darned excited about the series.

Underwhelmed is an exaggeration. I was so disappointed. I'm pretty fed-up ith the way things are 'adapted' for TV. This wasn't so muc an adaption as a complete re-write. It lost all it's charm, it's wit and, for me, it's interest. By the time the final disc froze due to some technical problem, i had given up caring. I know broadcasters whinge about we 'fanboys' who restrict their creativity by demanding continuity, what really, what's the point of creating something if people are going to say: I don't like that, let'sdo it like this instead.

Urgh, sorry people, I've just needed to get that off my chest. On the plus side, it hasn't stopped me reading the books, though I confess I'd give the series a wide berth in future.

It's odd.  I saw the series first.  Took me a while, too - I couldn't get past the title, "The Dresden Files."  My brain kept telling me it was a series about war.  Either that, or an American series set in Germany which seemed just strange.

I finally got round to watching it, and I, too, was underwhelmed.  I like to give things a chance, watch a few episodes before making a judgement.  Well, I watched the whole 12 episodes of this and was still underwhelmed.  Well, that's not quite true - I finished the series feeling very sad that I wouldn't be seeing Murphy or Bob or the various members of the supporting cast again just when it was finding its feet.

Then I read the books - I was cautious and only got the first two to give them a chance.  A few days later I bought another one.  The following day I bought all the other ones I could lay my hands on!  I think it's fair to say that I LOVE the books.  And you know something?  Reading the books has made my appreciation for the series grow.  I know that they're completely different kettles of fish - blonde / brunette; skull / ghost; diplomatically challenged loyal, faithful wizard / smooth, sophisticated (well, relatively), promiscuous (see previous parenthesis) hocky player.  Somehow, though, the love of the books has smoothed over my annoyances with the TV show 'til now I can take each on its own merits.  (Except Paul Blackthorne, who's still a bit dull phlegmatic.)

I know i have given my view here many times over.  I guess it's because I'm the only fan who hasn't drifted over to John T. Folden's  Dresden Files' forum to the point of out right abandoning this one.  Despite how this forum looks now there are many of us out there who did love the show.

I love the books and the show.  Yes, there were many changes done for the show. Think about it though.  How could the show be truly intriguing or interesting if it was the same exact content as the books? At the time there were only eight novels in print.  If each episode was an abridged adaptation of one of the novels they would have run out of content very quickly.  Not to mention certain things are just impossible to translate on television.  And it would have been predictable.  We would all know what is going to happen next.  And certain things (Let's be realistic here) simply would not work on television- a polka animated dinosaur, even if you used Jurassic Park effects is still a polka animated dinosaur.  Sure it's funny.  It's one of the best scenes in the books but it would not work well on TV.  The same can be said of a talking skull.   Terrence Mann is a very accomplished stage actor with a fan base all his own.  And Trading in an over caffeinated talking skull with no real personality of his own for the snarky somewhat tragic ghost was (in my opinion) one of the better aspects of the show.  The show's version of Bob has at least two active fan clubs.  A 'heram' and a community on Livejournal.   I'm sure there are more but those are the only two I've bothered to read messages on.

I find it funny when people ask things like 'Where is Mouse?' and 'Where is Thomas?' yet the Storm Front story (the only one really close to the books) is episode eight (and then the two hour 'movie' shown at three AM a few months ago) which means even if the show as following the books we should not have seen Mouse or Thomas yet.

I wish we had seen Season 2.  I wanted to see those flash backs of Hrothbert and Winifred that they were planning. And there was a chance Thomas would have appeared in Season 2.   The show was just getting good and had so much potential.  Imagine if they had canceled Buffy The Vampire Slayer after it's very short first season when all they did was monster of the week stuff.  Compare it to season six or seven and the show is virtually unrecognizable.  Highlander the series was the same way, you didn't even find out about The Watchers until Season 2.

I have read The Dresden Files novels and I still read them as they come out.  Nearly every change for the show had it's own purpose.  Yes, it's different from the books but the heart of it remains the same.  Harry Dresden is still Harry Dresden.   It's a different universe from the books but the basic idea remains the same, the feel of it.  And I feel many of the changes were good choices.   I am a book collector.  I understand the need for changes in adaptations.  I know the reality of the entertainment beast.   There, in fact, is only one book adaptation I truly loathe and that is Queen of the damned.  That is very simply the worst vampire film ever made with or without the book the title and character names came from.

Harry was a blue collar hero- a good guy who also was fighting for basic survival, a rarity in the world of fantasy and science fiction.   He was a rare good guy. You don't see Heros like that on TV anymore.   The last hero even remotely like Harry was Duncan Macleod on Highlander the series.  Sure they were very different as far as personalities and abilities (and even financial state) but they were true heroes.  We're in very cynical age where there aren't any truly great heroes anymore, people who do the right thing because they know it's right and fight for what they believe in.  We need that now more than ever.  We need to remember that people like that can exist.  Characters like Harry Dresden have become rare in television.  The Dresden Files was a breath of Fresh air on the SciFi Channel.  I miss it.

Unlike you I actually love the show but this is one thing we can agree on. I had my misconceptions too.  They advertised this show very poorly.  I wasn't going to watch the show at all.  Before it aired the few advertisements I had seen made it look like some cheap detective drama having to do with cases in the supernatural.   Another (yawn) Night stalker.  And I was already reeling in disgust from Stuart Townsend's version.  Is there anything that man touches that he doesn't ruin? the only reason I watched The Dresden Files was because someone talked me into it.  I was not going to watch it at all.   She talked me into it and while she was on the phone with me I turned it on and watched.

I saw the opening and the name Terrence Mann came up and I was like 'Wait.  I know him. Where do I know him from?'   When he finally came on screen my reaction was 'Oh, my God!  It's Dr. Frank N. Futter!'  In 2001 I had been to Broadway to see the revival of The Rocky Horror Show.   Terrence Mann had just taken over the role of Dr. Frank N. Futter.  I had seen and heard Terrence Mann in other things before then such as the cast album for Les Miserables (which I have loved for years) and as Oberon in the animated series Gargoyles but The Rocky Horror show was the first thing to come to my mind.  It was so surreal to see him there.  The first thing I did was retrieve the old playbill to make sure I was right and needless to say I was.  Before the word ghost was uttered on the show I noticed the manacle bracelets on Bob's wrists and I actually did ask the words 'Is he a genie?'  The thought that he might be a type of genie lingered for a chunk of the first episode because of his being bound to the skull and being able to be called back into it, much like a genie into his lamp.  Later this became very funny to me when in a later episode I heard child Harry ask the same thing.

Seeing Terrence Mann as the ghost drew me in.  I loved the character almost immedately.  Discovering that Harry Dresden was a wizard was the next thrill for me.  The commercials didn't even mention that!  It's like they wanted to make the show look like it was something it wasn't.   Less than a month later I found myself buying all The Dresden Files novels from a Barnes and Noble and I devoured them.  I loved the books.  I grew very attached to the character of Thomas but I was actually a little disappointed that Bob of the books was nothing like Bob of the show.   I honestly perferred the show version.  I do love both though. I would have probably over looked the books if not for the show.

Even into the seventh or so episode the commercials were still somewhat misleading. I recall the one for Soul Beneficiary.  'And the number one suspect is BOB!' (cutting to a clip of Bob just standing there looking stunned).  That was probably the most misleading commercial since the commercials that aired before the premiere.

Though The Dresden Files did have very, very good ratings I think if they had advertised it properly for what it really was they might have had an even bigger audience. There are people out there who still never knew it existed and those just discovering for the first time on Hulu either because the original commercials turned them off (as they almost turned me off) or because they never saw the advertisements at all.

TDF was simply an incredible show. I am in shock that is was not renewed. It had better ratings than Sci Fi's flagship show BSG yet there is no Dresden Files on? I love the books and I loved the show. I enjoyed them both for different reasons and wish that I still had the series to watch on TV between books.

Yes, I remember reading that at one point (for at least one episode) Dresden had higher ratings than Battlestar Galactica but The SciFi Channel wants us to quietly forget about that.   I agree with you completely.  I enjoy both for different reasons.  I love Thomas of the books and Bob of the show.

I love both the TV series and the books. I saw the TV show first, which probably gives it just a bit of an edge, but then I went out and immediately bought all the books, which I enjoyed thoroughly. I'd probably never have discovered the books at all were it not for the show, so I owe it a very large debt.  :-*

There are elements of the show I liked better (Bob, definitely), and elements of the books I liked better (the Blue Beetle, more of Mister, etc.), but I see no point at all in vilifying either one at the expense of the other, nor in denigrating their respective fans. Many of us liked both, and have no problem with the conflicts and differences there-in. We're grown-ups. We can deal with it.  :)

I could easily say the same.

Mister is in Storm Front and in a deleted scene from Rules of Engagement that's on the DVD.  As for the Beetle, realistically Paul Blackthorne is a big man and they'd have to fit him in there with equipment.  It would have been very difficult.

I love Bob of the show and Thomas of the books.

Now we have Harry et al. of the TV show and Harry et al. of the books and Harry et al.of the comics and (soon) Harry et al. of the role-playing game.  It does make defining canon difficult, but as a fan, I'm not sure that's a bad thing.  It gives us lots of iterations to play with in costuming, etc., without someone really jumping down your throat for a "non-canon" costume.

In contrast, I belong to a Star Wars club and when you realize how canon has solidified in 30+ years (what with the extended universe and animated stuff and videogames, not to mention the 501st and the rebel legion on costuming), it's really hard for a newb to keep track of, and rather off-putting sometimes.

I would suggest that the slightly different versions of Harry and those around him make the canon that much more realistic and three dimensional than it might otherwise be.  I for one am different depending on to whom I'm speaking, as I modify my behaviour and thought processes and means of expressing myself, conciously or subconciously to address the requirements of that individual or group.

It's one of the reasons I hate speaking on the phone to someone whilst being overheard by another for whom I'm a slightly different person.  And, in fact, until those two people meet and realise what the deal is, I feel like I'm being pulled in different directions.

The one area where I think the show would be better would be for Harry to have a bit more emotional energy.  But I keep saying that, so I'll stop. :)

I find it funny you feel that way because I have a friend who insists that show Harry always seemed like he was on the verge of hysteria.  I felt Paul Blackthorne captured all the aspects of the personality quite well.

Dear Mr. Wolfe,
The show died an untimely death--and I only got to see in on YouTube, because Of circumstances which made it difficult to watch it in 'real time.'  I really liked what I saw, and wish there were more.
Please, Mr. Wolfe, Jim, keep options open for at least a TV movie about  Harry Dresden!
I love seeing him 'in action!'
Thanks for all your hard work.
Peace,
Tina
