Apologies Peregrine, I don't often go into the non-spoiler Dresden board, hadn't seen that you did the same thing.

You forgot Smex too.

Hadn't forgotten, was hoping to avoid it. Still gives me nightmares

PG = Proven Guilty (book 8)
Might want to turn off bb code there, like this [nobbc](book 8)[/nobbc] (note that I used it twice so you could easily copypaste the visible text into your post).

Or cheat by simply inserting a space after "8". Faster. Just as unnecessary as the no-bb-code code, so speed works as well.

I like it. I've been lurking around long enough to recognise most of the acronyms but I don't belong to any forums but this one and occasionally find myself saying, "What?" when presented with a new one.

Thanks.

ILG = Industrious Little Gnome. This was bestowed on our own Priscellie, who first came to Jim's (JB's ;) ) attention by assembling a TDF timeline and has since proven to be an invaluable right-hand women for him, to the point that many people think she's Jim's publicist :D .

WttJ = Welcome to the Jungle, the original DF Prequel Graphic Novel.

Edit:  I might recommend breaking the book (and WttJ) acronyms out into their own section, and maybe throw in a Color for the section titles.

Although I don't get exposed to the discussions enough, I have seen HIB before and had to have it explained.  GC can also be Grey Council.

I haven't seen most of those others used in convo.

Edited OP to ask that only actively used abbreviations be listed here.

This is why I would pay attention to the usage of "GG" after the release of GS to see if it has staying power.  It might only be used for the prerelease of chapter 5 and then never again.  OTOH, (heh I used another acronym) "Grey Cloak" was used within the first few chapters of WN, and percisted through the book until he was named in the final battle.

EBG might fall into one of the slightly obscure ones, but I know it's turned me for a loop a few times (which might be explained by it's obscurity).  I'm concerned that the dresden files section is getting very crouded, which is partially why I suggested that you break out the acronyms for the works out into their own section.  You might also consider making a section for "Obscure DF character abreviations"  For toons that showed up in one book and were gone like EBG.

Oh, I'm pretty sure I've seen HHWB's boss, as named in BR abreviated... isn't  he, Lord of Slowest Terror?  Hmmm pretty sure I never had a mental double take at "LOST" though...

so this really isn't used much around the boards due to lack of... well, fangirls and fanshippers, but idk, I thought it may be helpful too? It's helpful around fanfictions for the most part, anyway.

Hari-Kari: Harry/Murphy Shipping, as coined by Priscellie :D
"Pink Court": Thomas/Susan
"The Spanish Inquisition"/Marlos: Molly/Carlos
Drolly: Harry/Molly

(mostly grabbed from Priscellie/this thread here: http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,20073.15.html)
...that's about it, the current 'known' nicknames for these fanshippings, mockery or not. Someone may shoot me, but I ship... ships, so yeah. xD

This made absolutely no sense to me... So I went to the linked thread.  And now I understand it, but wish I didn't.

Edit:  Jaeh, I was going to recommend that you edit your OP in the linked thread, so that it listed all the popular "ships" that percolated out of your thread, but I see that you can't...  Oh, and it looks like it's about to decay!!!  I'm recommending (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,19206.msg1172111.html#msg1172111) that it get saved from that fate to Prisc.  You might want to start a Redux version of this thread and list the popular ones that came about from the original, and maybe even maintain it as new ones... evolve.

Post by: Jaeh on July 19, 2011, 03:24:20 PM
at the risk of cluttering this thread with fanshipping and reminding the boys that girls actually exist ( :P , haha), I think I might just start a redux of that shipping thread... at some point. soon. I'll list down all known shipping for DF, from the most "vile" to the most popular.... and add to them as time goes on. :D

I don't even like that pairing, dammit.  It squicks me beyond Harry/Mavra*. Mentor-cest of any type does.

But if you're gonna make a mashup of two names to indicate a pairing, you might as well make it not sound like some sort of unholy combination of a streetcar and that thing I use to move cinderblocks, bags of sand/clay/gravel or anything else that's a PITA to carry.

*Well...not quite. But it squicks me almost as much because it's slightly more plausible, and because I can convince myself that Harry/Mavra shippers are joking.

And I don't wanna go into the shipping lanes, thankyouverymuch. They're scary.  ;D

The t's are lower case to differentiate from TT.

I suggest we wait a week or so to see if it has legs, but it probably will stick around.

Also you missed:
WG or TWG = White God or The White God, Uriel's boss.

Which I have seen used a few times since I put it up here.

I have to admit that the at times heavy use of acronyms are what has kept me from writing too much on boards like this....There are alot of them that really makes sense when it comes to very long names like (DFRPG = Dresden Files Role Playing Game) but I just think that some of them are a result of rather extreme laziness:p....It can't be that energy demanding to write NeverNever...

Not a criticism, just an observation that it makes it a little intimidating for new users

The DF section is getting huge.  I'd like to reiterate my recommendation that the acronyms for the books get broken out into their own section.

Maybe brake up the rest into Characters, Groups, and Places.

Also there are some that are outdated.  The one I have in mind is GG for Grey Ghost.  That pretty much went out of fashion shortly after everyone had finished Ghost Story.

Here's what the DF section would look like with my suggested edits:  (I didn't get rid of GG, and I lumped places and groups together because appart the catagories would be half the size of the others)

Dresden Files

The Books (and other works)
AM = Depending on context of post either Aftermath (short story) or Ancient Mai
BAT = Big Apocalyptic Trilogy - The final 3 books of the Dresden Files (should be books 23, 24 & 25 if I remember correctly)
BR = Blood Rites (book 6)
CD = Cold Days (book 14)
DB = Dead Beat (book 7)
DF = Dresden Files
DFRPG = Dresden Files Role Playing Game
DM = Death Masks (book 5)
FM = Fool Moon (book 2)
GP = Grave Peril (book 3)
GS = Ghost Story (book 13)
PG = Proven Guilty (book 8 )
SG = Skin Game (book 15)
SF = Storm Front (book 1)
SK = Summer Knight (book 4) (or the actual summer Knight)
SmF = Small Favour (or Favor, depending on region ;)) (book 10)
TC = Turn Coat (book 11)
TDF = The Dresden Files
WN = White Night (book 9)
WttJ = Welcome to the Jungle, the original DF Prequel Graphic Novel.

Characters
Al - Alfred (Demonreach)
AM = Depending on context of post either Aftermath (short story) or Ancient Mai
BM = Bolshevik Muppet
CF = Chlorofiend
DR = Demonreach
DV = Dresdenverse
Eb = Ebenezar
EBG = Eldest Brother Gruff
Eeb/s = Red Court Assassins
GC = Depending on context of post either Grey Cloak or Grey Council
GG = Grey Ghost
GK = Gatekeeper
HWWB = He Who Walks Behind
HWWB4 = He Who Walks Before
LtW = Listens to Wind (Injun Joe)
SK = Summer Knight (book 4) (or the actual summer Knight)
TTH = Time-travelling Harry
TWG / WG = The White God
WK = Winter Knight (rarely used for White (vampires) King)

Groups and Places
AT = Arctis Tor
BC = Depending on context of post either Black Court (vampires) or Black Council
BCV = Black Court vampires
Blampires = Black Court vampires
DR = Demonreach
GC = Depending on context of post either Grey Cloak or Grey Council
Jampires = Jade Court vampires
JLC = Justice League of Chicago
KotC - Knight(s) of the Cross
LC = Little Chicago
LoOn = Lords of Outer Night
LtW = Listens to Wind (Injun Joe)
NH = Nickleheads (The Denarians)
NN = Nevernever
Rampires = Red Court vampires
RCV = Red Court vampires
SC = Senior Council
WC = Depending on context of post either White Court (vampires) or White Council
WCV = White Court vampires
Whampires = White Court vampires
WK = Winter Knight (rarely used for White (vampires) King)

I've made the change, and you were right, it does look a lot better and easier to use. :)

I'm also thinking of dropping the following due to age:
BM = Bolshevik Muppet
CF = Chlorofiend

GG has been dropped, once we found out it's identity it seemed to go out of use.

The thing is, that list is more attuned to me specifically.  Even I haven't used AA more than once or twice this year (probably more times in these 2 posts than the rest of the past year all together).

I'll consider splicing it in, but I'm not sure of the best way to go about doing it, and I would be more comfortable if others contributed to it first.

I also think it sounds like a good notion. Also, it's actually 123456789blaaa. No 0, no h, and 2 more a's  ;).

Heh, ok, I fixed it.

There was little trimming, and a bit of organizing.  But yah, I agree that it was an improvement :)

Added TWC (TWG / WG were already there.)

TWC = The White Christ.  First used by Mab in book, use of this term and TWG helps insulate our fictional theorizing from RL religion thus hopefully avoiding potential offense when we use our understanding of RL history, religion, and lore to influence how we understand the DF backstory.  Not respecting this boundary could lead to "TT (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,14461.0.html)" so this slang term is a very handy way to make it abundantly clear that one's comments are deliberately being applied to the fictional DF and not to real world beliefs.

OG?  I keep reading stuff like "OG Merlin" and understand it means essentially "original", but what does the "G" stand for?

I've always heard it as Original Gangster.  Though that may not be what is meant here.

I've seen it used as "Original Generation"

I suspect the word 'Gangster' isn't meant to be taken literally anymore. OG as 'Original Gangster' refers to someone who was a founding member of a gang. So OG, in the broad sense, refers to an original member of something, possibly even the founder.

For OG Merlin it's just a way of saying the Original Merlin/Merlin the Original Founder of the organization [White Council].

I've taken "OG" to literally mean "Original Gangster" and to have a meaning something along the lines of "Street Legit."

So during theorizing I've started using a few acronyms for... alternate versions of characters in theorized future story lines.  Specifically the Mirror Mirror (MM) book and the theorized Time Travel book.  So I'm going to start cashing potential acronyms and slang for these characters in this post, but won't add them to the official dictionary until we get closer to the actual books and the predominant slang becomes more solidified.

The terms:
MMcone=MM Marcone
PGH=Proven Guilty Harry
TTH=Time Travel Harry
Yrrah=MM Harry

From what I've seen, Yrrah has largely been replaced by -Harry, /Harry, !Harry, and ~Harry.  I thought most had decided on -Harry, but then the others keep popping up.

Ah, I'd missed that evolution.  There's time for it to drift elsewhere anyways.

As if we could ever come to a consensus around here.   ::)
