So, who all is planning on being here for this? I've been informed by my company that they're not approving of any vacation days in July, so I need to know if I need to mysteriously get sick that day or not. ;)

I believe I would personally be able to attend that day. I shouldn't be on-call that week, and it's after work hours. Plus, it's not too far from where I work (though I have this sinking feeling parking will be a royal pain nonetheless).

Not if you park in the (free) garage across from Barnes and Noble, I think it's Saks.  It's then a short walk over to Unity.

Well, somebody please video this for me. There's no way I'd be able to get there from Albuquerque.  :'( We're out here in the middle of nowhere where nobody ever comes.  :'( :'( :'(
Have fun everybody. Think of me here, all alone, missing everything, crying over my unsigned copy of Ghost Story....

(Have I elicited any pity yet?)

There's probably going to be another Virtual Signing this year, so you may have the ability to order a signed copy?

Oh gods, I'd love to be able to do that. I'd even be okay with owning two copies of Ghost Story for that.

Wouldn't I have to wait until AFTER the release date to get a signed book from a virtual signing? I've waited this long, I might explode if I had to wait longer!

Besides, I like giving my local independent book store my business. Keeps THEM in business....

Besides 2, the whole idea is to be in the presence of THE MASTER...... (will he be bringing a Mister stand-in so you can be in the presence of The Master?)

Now I'm just blithering....

:D ;D  I only know because I'm always stuck as the driver for any trip downtown.  And for several years that B&N was the closest one to the Northland. ;)

Well, I'm going to be there, but I have to save up my Nickels to do it.

Now I just have to decide who the second ticket will be for.  My father or my daughter... tough choice.

Get the best of both. Order GS from the virtual signing. That'll be your copy to keep.
Buy GS on release day from your local bookshop. Read it, then donate it to one of the libraries near you which haven't ordered it. (Yes, I know it seems beyond belief, but there are actually libraries which haven't seen the light and don't own all of Jim's works.)

$27.95 - that isn't chump change but it's roughly comparable to a casual dinner out for two.
Wouldn't you rather give up the one night at a restaurant to instead pick up a Burger King burger for each of you, then scurry home and curl up to read it?
And by donating, you could be spawning any number of future fans from that library offer, who'll become just as dedicated as we are???
And Jim's smidgen out of the two purchases will be going toward keeping him focused on what we want him doing, namely writing. No sense in letting him get dreamy-eyed about putting down the keyboard and finding something else to do in his life. Something less painful than writing, like bamboo shoots under the fingernails, or testing out beds of nails for mystical yogis...

Hey! I figured out how to quote!

This is actually a good idea, if I had the extra $27.95. BUT, that's actually not a dinner out, it's more like a month's lunches at work, or a 1/3rd a tank of gas to get to work, to make the money to buy the book, etc........  :'( So, somebody will just have to video the Q&A at one of the signings (or all of them....) and I will live vicariously through you lucky people!

I was originally planning on making a day trip out of the Kansas City signing but my only friend who is a Dresden fan can't get off of work. I don't think I'll be going by myself.

Maybe you can hook up with another Dresden fan on the boards who bought a ticket, but isn't bringing a guest?

Mystic!  You have to come!! I'm gonna be there!!!

Or, if you can't come, you have to find some time that week we can have lunch or something... I don't get in until Tues evening, then I leave early Friday.  No definite plans yet, except for the signing itself.

Well I finally purchased my book and 2 tickets.  I'll be bringing my wife.  I've missed the last three book releases/signing.  I'll be there this time ... argh!!

Anyone know about how long these usually last.  It doesn't matter, I'll be there the whole time, but I'd like to set expectations with my wife and kids.

I don't think I've spent less than 3 hours at any of the signings I've been to... and I think in some cases it's been closer to 5.

A lot depends on how early you plan on getting there and where you are in the signing line.  Especially with a venue this big, if you're near the end of the line for signing, count on hanging around for a few hours.

Hope that everyone tonight at the Kansas City signing has an absolutely great time and that you can successfully coax Jim into a long, juicy, interactive Q&A, and that someone can get it posted (onto YouTube or whichever media) as soon as you can. And the same good wishes to each of you who will be attending the signings in other cities as well, of course.

Those of us who couldn't work out clearing a path to make it to a signing this year are green with envy (well, green me, anyway!).

Enjoy, enjoy! And please, please express to Jim, make sure that he understands, that both the quality of his authorcraft as well as his goodnatured willingness to stay accessible to his fans really is noted and appreciated by us readers.
It can be hard, even for a superbly successful author, not to react to the occasional sharp-tongued critic or to some person who lobs inappropriate criticisms or stereotypes toward the writer or a piece of work. An approving mob of ten thousand readers who stay silent may be less clearly felt than just one or two vocal complainants.

I'm already planning a Cold Days signing trip for next year. Missing this year's is almost too much to stand. I don't think I could stand it again next year.

This was such a great event.  The Rainy Day Books people were very nice and well organized.  I was going to get video but did not charge the communication device/ phone on the trip from St. Charles to KC, so didn't get to do it.

Jim opened with the standard, "I assume my fans can read" line and answered a LOT of questions over an hour.  I even got my question in there about DC versus Marvel, which I knew would come down Marvel but was hoping to hear a little more DC love, interested factoid, Jim mentioned having been offered a chance to write for Superman and Batman but turned them down because he didn't feel like he loved the material enough to do it justice, unlike Spidey.

After questions the signing began, there were over 500 fans in attendance so that was a LOT of books.  My place in line feel right about in the middle, after Jim took a short break to get ICE on his freaking hand and wrist to sign more books! He was apologetic about it, but man, he is just so freaking COOL to go through that much effort to connect with the fans.  My wife and I have been lucky enough to see him a couple of times before this and it has always been a great event.  I look forward to next year!

It was so much fun catching up with some folks I know!

I've typed up my notes from the Q&A, but I haven't been on the forum much since the redesign so I don't know where to post them now.  Is there a section for that?

Post em here and I'll port em into your old topic if you like.

edit:  Or post them in a new topic in the spoilers section.  I would recommend the sticky in the spoilers section, but something this massive will probably generate a lot of discussions, and I'd like to try to keep some of that bulk out of that long term thread.  Either way, I'll be copying them into a topic in the WoJ section as well.

Thanks, Serak!

First, for your visual delight... a pic!   ;D

I'm next to Jim.

Here's what I got from the Q&A:

Q.   Will there be another Dresden TV series?
A.   “I’m willing to forgive Hollywood.”

Q.   In Even Hand, we learn that John Marcone is not his real name; does that have significance?
A.   It would certainly have significance if someone were trying to use his Name for spellcasting.

Q.   Will there be a 7th book in Alera?
A.   If Jim were to go back to Alera, it would be years from now.  The book would be a couple of generations in the future to see how things turned out.

Q.   Would you like to see either series in an animated movie or anime?
A.   This is actually how Jim sees things as he’s writing them.  Also, it would be very cool because as an animated movie, it’s a lot less expensive to blow things up.

Q.   Is there a real or historical person or place that you would like Harry to ‘interact’ with but you haven’t been able to yet.
A.   Yes, but he is going to use them, so he won’t tell what they are.

Q.   Are there any big clues that no one has picked up on yet?
A.   At least one person has picked up on every clue, but no single person has put it all together.

Q.   What did you base Harry’s character on?
A.   Jim put together a list of classical popular wizards (e.g. Merlin) and classical private eyes (e.g. Sherlock Holmes), then listed common traits of each.  For example, great wizards are great because they seek knowledge; most great private eyes mouth off to exactly the wrong person at exactly the wrong time. Using that list of characteristics, he created Harry’s personality.

Q.   Will we learn the history of Jack Murphy and why he killed himself?
A.    No.  That would require that he actually killed himself.

Q.   What’s the biggest cliché you’ve used?
A.   A wizard throwing a fireball.

Q.   Will Harry ever jump through time?
A.   That would require breaking a law of magic.  And it’s not like there are 7 books planned, one for each law of magic.

Q.   In the RPG, there is the option of creating different Harrys based on Harry having made different choices.  Is that just for the RPG?
A.   No, and it will actually come into play in a future plot line.  Considering a book called “Mirror Mirror.”

Q.   When did you know Maggie existed?
A.   Was seeing a lot of complaints about LKH’s books, and one in particular said, “It’s just BDSM sex, it could never be relevant to the plot.”  And Jim thought, “Hmmmm…”

Q.   If you could go back and do things differently, what would you change in books 1 and 2?
A.   Would probably throw them out and completely rewrite them.  But that would probably end up in disaster.  There are a lot of things that have come out of mistakes.  For example, a physical therapist told Jim that based on all the injuries Harry had suffered at a certain point in the novel, he would have needed surgeries, physical therapy, etc.  That issue led to defining how wizards’ bodies heal better/faster, and it also linked in nicely with the fact that wizards live so much longer than normal people.

Q.   What actors would you choose for Harry and Thomas?
A.   Favorite choice for Harry would be a 1970s Harrison Ford.  Of current actors, would choose Captain Tight Pants (Nathan Fillion) for Harry, and Bryce from Chuck for Thomas (Matt Bomer).

Q.   Why did Ghost Story get delayed so long?
A.   There was such a large part of the book during which Harry really couldn’t communicate with anyone; since dialogue is the easiest part to write, it took more time to work through the narrative.  Also, parts of the plot turned out differently than originally planned.  Finally, there were some personal changes that took some adapting to.

Q.   What do you read?
A.   Robert Parker, Harry Connely, Benedict Jacka, Brandon Sanderson, Percy Jackson series, Harry Potter series.  Many others he’s sure he left out.

Q.   What genre would you like to write in?
A.   True SciFi…working on a project that is kind of Men in Black meets X-men on the moon.

Q.   Do you figure out the end of a book before you start writing?
A.   “If I’m smart.”  Usually has in mind the ending, 1 big ‘special effects’ scene, ½ dozen sarcastic comments, and a few smaller scenes.

Q.   Did Dresden maintain domain over Demonreach when he died?
A.   Read Ghost Story.

Q.   What other short stories are you considering?
A.   Currently 2/3 through the 2nd book of a Bigfoot trilogy:
      - B is for Bigfoot (elementary school)
      - I was a Teenage Bigfoot (high school)
      - Bigfoot on Campus (college)

Q.   Was Harry’s mom related to Morgan LeFay?
A.   No, LeFay is simply a mark of honor.  And a mark of insanity.
