Title: The Dresden Files RPG Book Quote Scavenger Hunt
Post by: iago on February 24, 2007, 06:13:46 PM
I figure dozens of readers of the books are better than one -- so I'd like to kick off a "book quote scavenger hunt".  In the RPG, we want to excerpt little bits from the books themselves (short stories, too!) in order to help illustrate the various skills and abilities we have in the game as expressed in the stories of the Dresden Files.  So I'm asking you, the fans of the Dresden Files, to lend a hand!

Here are the "rules":

- Quotes provided need to be no longer than 4 sentences -- these need to be tiny excerpts, not large passages.

- I need at least two such quotes per skill (list found below), for starters.  There may be a second scavenger hunt for other pieces later on (the supernatural abilities part of things is almost guaranteed to need some, once I'm ready for 'em).

- You're allowed to ask questions about particular items on the scavenger hunt list if you're stumped.  I definitely have a few ideas as to who or what might be appropriate for at least a few of these things.

- Anyone who participates and submits quotes is eligible for a "thank-you prize" -- a free PDF (electronic download) of my mini-rpg of surreal horror "Don't Rest Your Head" -- if I choose to use one or more of your quotes in the book (first come first serve logic applies if several people offer up the same quotes).

Sound good?  Okay, ready -- set -- go!

Here's the list

And just to be clear -- you can submit things piecemeal, or for the entire list, and I'd prefer you make the submissions by replying to this thread.

Thanks!

Fun! Let us begin...

Alertness:

Molly rubbed at her wrists, wincing. “Um. Sergeant? How did you know I was there?”
“Floorboards creaking when no one was standing on them,” I said.
“Your deodorant,” Murphy said.
“Your tongue stud clicked against your teeth once,” I said.

Two quotes for Driving (although it is a bit of an unconventional vehicle, but Survival doesn't seem quite apropriate either) if anyone has a better idea about what skill would be used to ride a reanimated T-rex through Chicago then you can use these quotes for that skill.

Dead Beat Chapter 39:
I didn't know this before, but as it turns out, Tyrannosaurs can really haul ass.

Dead Beat Chapter 39:
Here's something else I bet you didn't know about Tyrannosaurs: they don't corner well. The first time I tried to take a left, Sue swung wide, the enormous momentum of her body simply too much for even her muscles to lightly command. She swung up onto the sidewalk, crushed three parked cars under her feet, knocked over two light poles, kicked a compact car end over end to land on its roof, and broke every window on the first two floors of the building beside us as her tail lashed back and forth in an effort to counterbalance her body.

Stealth, sort of kind of. It also might be too much to use. I have a / where the wit just adds verve to it. :)

"I kept on moving toward my car, and heard footsteps growing closer, behind me. I told myself not get too jumpy. / Maybe it was just some other frightened, endangered, paranoid sleep-deprived consultant who had been called to the morgue in the middle of the night." - Death Masks, Chapter 5

Conviction - SF chapter 9
"I couldn't ward off off a vampire mosquito with my faith in the Almighty - He and I just never seemed to connect. But the pentacle was a symbol of magic itself, and I had plenty of faith in that.

Intimidation

Two options here, both from the same book and chapter:

Fear can feel like literal ice water. It can be a cold feeling that you swallow, that rolls down your throat and spreads into your chest. It steals your breath and makes your heart labor when it shouldn't, before expanding into your belly and hips, leaving quivers behind. Then it heads for the thighs, the knees (occasionally with an embarrassing stop on the way), stealing the strength from the long muscles that think you should be using them to run the hell away.

OR

"Yes," she murmured. "Wise enough to be afraid. To understand, at least in part. How does it feel, to know what you know, child?"
My voice came out unsteady, and more quiet than I would have liked. "Sort of like Tokyo when Godzilla comes up on the beach."

"All right. This is a figure of High magic. Three of them, really, one inside the other, like layered walls. Remember what I told you about magical circles?"

Kim nodded. "That they either hold something out or keep it in. Either magic energies or creatures of the Nevernever, but that mortal creatures can cross the circle and break it."

"You really need to work on your opening technique," I said.

For Performanace (though Rapport or Presence might also work).

"Some words have a power that has nothing to do with supernatural forces.  They resound in the heart and mind, they live long after the sounds of them have died away, they echo in the heart and the soul.  They have power, and that power is quite real."

Discipline/Conviction:
Storm Front paperback page 20
"The way magic works.  Whenever you do something with it, it comes from inside of you.  Wizards have to focus on what they're trying to do, visualize it, believe it, to make it work.  You can't make something happen that isn't part of you, inside."

Not sure exactly what category this quote fits, but it seems like good fluff for the RPG
Dead beat (hardcover) page 75 (beginning of chapter 8)
"Magic comes from life, and especially from emotions.  They're a source of the same intangivle energy that everyone can feel when an autumn moon rises and fills you with a sudden sense of bone-deep excitement, or when the first warm breeze of spring rushes past your face, full of the scents of life, and drowns you in a sudden flood of unreasoning joy... {about half a paragraph more}

More quotes later

"Thomas snorted, "So you started learning to pick locks? I thought you were playing guitar."
"This is simpler," I said, "and it doesn't make dogs start to howling."
"I might have killed you if I'g heard 'House of the Rising Sun' oe more time," Thomas agreed. "Where'd you get the picks?"
I glanced over my shoulder at Murphy and said, "Little bird."
"One of these days, Dresden," Murphy said, still subbornly faced away.

Weapons:
Never be afraid to try unconventional weaponry from Blood Rites Chapter 30
Kincaid reached into the van and presented me with a futuristic-looking weapon, a gun.  It had a round tank the size of a gumball machine attatched to the frame, and for a second I thought I had been handed a pistol sized flame thrower.  Then I recognized it, cleared my throat and said, "This is a paintball gun."

Effects of holy water on Black Court Vampires from Blood Rites Chapter 33
...they splattered into Mavra, sizzling viciously.  Silver fire immediately began chewing at her flesh wherever the paintballs struck and broke.  It ripped into her and happened fast, as if some hyper kinetic gourmet were taking a melon baller to her chest.

from Blood Rites, Chapter 12
Thinking back later, I couldn't clearly remember her facial features or her body, beyond a notion that they were superb.  Her looks were almost ertraneous.  They weren't any more important to her appeal than a glass was to wine.  It was at it's best when invisible and showing the spirit contained within.  Beyond mere physical presence, I could sense the nature of the woman-strength of will, intelligence, blended with a sardonic wit and edged with a lazy, sensuous hunger.

Fists (or alertness)

WN Chapter 2
With no warning whatsoever, Murphy moved, spinning in a blur of motion that swept her leg out in a scything, ankle-height arch behind her. There was a thump of impact, and the sound of something heavy hitting the floor. Murphy—her eyes closed—sprang onto something unseen, and her hands moved in a couple of small, quick circles, fingers grasping. Then Murphy grunted, set her arms, and twisted her shoulders a little.  There was a young woman’s high-pitched gasp of pain, and abruptly, underneath Murphy, there was a girl. Murphy had her pinned on her stomach on the floor, one arm twisted behind her, wrist bent at a painful angle.

(If the whole thing is too long consider just using the part in bold)

Driving
PG Chapter 4
I wrenched at the steering wheel and the brakes, my body responding to things my stunned brain hadn't caught up to yet. I think I kept it from becoming a total disaster, because instead of spinning off into oncoming traffic or hitting the wall at a sharp angle, I managed to slam the Beetle's passenger-side broadside into the building beside the street. Brick grated on steel, until I came to a halt fifty feet later.

Here's an early one from Blood Rites:
Weapons (weaponed combat, swordplay, thrown weaponry, weapon knowledge)

"As I watched, one of them reached down between its crooked legs and . . . Well, not to put too fine a point on it, but it gathered up the kind of ammunition primates in zoos traditionally rely upon. The monkey-demon hurled it with a chittering scream, and it combusted on its way to me. I had to duck before the noxious ball of incendiary goop smacked into my nose."

Here's an early one from Proven Guilty:
Driving (driving, flying, boating, car chases, shortcuts, street navigation)

"Stars swarmed over my vision and I tried to swat them away so that I could get a look at the Chrysler's plates--but it was gone in a heartbeat. Or at least I think it was. Truth be told, my head was spinning so much that the car could have been doing interpretive dance in a lilac tutu and I might not have noticed."

EDIT: Ooo... and one from Dead Beat.Handy, if you don't want to say your real name:

Deceit (Falsehood, deception, distraction, misdirection)
"Who," said the man, his accent thick and British, "are you?"
"The Great Pumpkin," I responded. "I've risen from the pumpkin patch a bit early because Butters is just that nifty. And you are?"

Fun, Fun, Fun!

All of the following quotes are from Death Masks (in paperback)

Weapons
Holy water, a couple cloves of garlic, vials of salt, and iron filings filled the basket, intended to be door prizes for anything that showed up in an attempt to suck my blood, carry me off to faerieland, or sell me stale cookies. (DM, Chap 10, Page 105)

Scholarship
I found the box and pawed through it until I had found a vellum scroll tied shut with a white ribbon. I opened it and peered down  at the the handwritten calligraphy. It started off with the word Insomuch, and the syntax got more opaque from there. (DM, Chap 8, Page 84)

Resources
"Do you love money then, Mister Dresden?" … "I used to think I loved it. But now I realize it was just a dependency." (DM, Chap 7, Page 77)

Contacts
I'd come here to meet Mort and get some information from him. He'd come here to meet me, because he refused to be seen with me on the street. (DM, Chap 1, Page 5)

Alertness
I licked my lips and checked all the fire exits, just to be safe. No telling when you might need to make a speedy exit. (DM, Chap 1, Page 1)

Athletics
I did the only thing any reasonable wizard would have done. I turned around and ran like hell. (DM, Chap 5, Page 57)

One other thing I'd learned. Wheezy wizards aren't all that good at running. (DM, Chap 6, Page 58)

I can't wait to look for more...

Burglary
SF, p.64/65
"One of the reasons vampires, as a rule, don't do it - they have enough trouble just holding themselves together, outside the Nevernever. It isn't harmful to a human wizard, like me, but it can really impair anything you try to do with magic. Also, it just isn't polite."

"Still, it was my first Council meeting as a full wizard, and he was the Merlin, after all. And I did look pretty bad. Plus, Ebanezar shot me a warning glance. I swallowed a hot answer and took a stab at diplomacy."

Burglary
Dead beat 321 hardback

One hand darted in and plucked up an orange box.  Then he looked around and picked up a couple packs of batteries from the rack on the wall.  He hadn't touched a thing but what he had taken with him, and neither had I.  Without security systems, the only way we would get caught would be by fingerprints or direct apprehension.

Here are the rest of the list from my end.

Deceit
Summer Knight
"You should know, Mister Dresden, that my kind, from great to small, are bound to speak the truth." - Mab
"That hasn't slowed your ability to deceive." - Harry

Discipline
Proven Guilty
I pushed out every sensation but for the bathing, and without conscious effort my motions took on the steady rhythm of ritual, something commonplace transformed into an act of art and meditation, like a Japanese tea ceremony.

Empathy
Death Masks
Looking on someone's soul is something you never forget. No matter how badly you might want to. – Harry Dresden

Endurance
Blood Rites
Panting, I looked down at the box of whimpering puppies. A bunch of wet black noses and eyes looked back up at me from under a white dusting of extinguishing chemical.
"Hell's bells," I panted at them. "You guys are lucky Brother Wang wants you back so much. If he hadn't paid half up front, I'd be the one in the box and you'd be carrying me."
A bunch of little tails wagged hopefully.
"Stupid dogs," I growled.

Investigation
Summer Knight
"Too good to be true," I repeated. I drew the .44-caliber revolver from the desk drawer, leveled it at her, and thumbed back the hammer. "Call me crazy, but lately I've been thinking that if something's too good to be true, then it probably isn't.” – Harry Dresden

Lore
Death Masks
A cold chill started at the base of my spine and slithered up over my neck. I stopped and looked around me, reaching for my blasting rod. I extended my magical senses as best I could, tasting the air to see what had given me the shivers.

Might
Fool Moon
I smiled at him and contemplated his shocked expression to my own satisfaction. Then I drew in a breath, and my renewed will with it, lifted the rod in my right hand, murmured a phrase in a language I didn't know, and blew the tires off his f**king truck.

Performance
Grave Peril
"I still can't believe," Michael said, sotto voce, "that you came to the Vampires' Masquerade Ball dressed as a vampire."
"Not just a vampire," I said, "a cheesy vampire. Do you think they got the point?"

Rapport
Blood Rites
"Is that a puppy in your pocket, or are you just glad to see me?" – Karrin Murphy

Resources
Grave Peril
Mortimer Lindquist had tried to give his house that gothic feel. Greyish gargoyles stood at the corners of his roof. Black iron gates glowered at the front of his house and statuary lined the walk to his front door. Long grass had overgrown his yard. If his house hadn't been a red-roofed, white-walled stucco transplant from somewhere in southern California, it might have worked.

Scholarship
Proven Guilty
“But we’ve been tinkering with that stupid thing every night for six months. You’re growing a cowlick and buck teeth, by the way. You keep this up and you’ll have to retire to a home for magical geeks and nerds.” - Bob

Stealth
Fool Moon
Into the water went the ingredients: plastic wrap for sight; a bit of plain white cotton, for touch; a little deodorant for smell; a rustle of wind for hearing; a leaf of plain old lettuce, for taste; and finally I threw in a blank piece of paper, for the mind, and some elevator music for the spirit. The ingredients were boring. The potion looked and smelled boring. Perfect.

Survival
Death Masks
It came charging toward me, several hundred pounds of angry-looking monster, and I did the only thing any reasonable wizard could have done. I turned around and ran like hell.

Weapons
Dead Beat
The next morning my brain was throbbing with far too many thoughts and worries to allow for any productive thinking. I couldn't afford that. Until I knew exactly what was going on and how to stop it, the most important weapon in my arsenal was reason.
I needed to clear my head.

Loving the quotes, folks.  Some of them are more "thematically" about the idea of the name of the skills, rather than examples of the *mundane* skills themselves being used, but they may end up as fodder for the spellcasting chapter...

Keep 'em coming. :)

Survival: (FM 5) "The compass needle shuddered, spun wildly and then swung to the bloodstain on the dome like a hound picking up a scent."

Contacts: (FM 11) "The demon straightened its hideous form and said, in a perfect Oxford accent, "Quite. You understand, I must observe the formalities." Then it took a pair of wholly incongruous wire-frame spectacles from beneath a scale and perched them upon the beaklike extremity of its nose. "You have questions?"

Intimidation: (FM 30) "Uh. Hi guys." I said a bit lamely. "I"ve got your boss. Put the guns down, take your belts off, and walk away from them nice and slow, or I kill him."

Yep. Fool Moon is the one book I have near at hand.  ;)

All right, here's the update and tallies.  We've got a few gaps.  Stuff that still needs some solid quotes are in bold.  This won't line up one for one with the quotes folks posted above because some of the quotes I didn't feel were connected with the right skill, in terms of acting as examples of the skill in use in the books.

Y'all have done a great, great job so far -- but this thing isn't over yet.  Let's see if we can knock those boldfaced ones off the list!

Might - Summer Knight Ch 22

My older brother rolled a tractor and it pinned him, broke his hip, and caught on fire. I picked it up and threw it off him, then dragged him back to the house. More than a mile. I was twelve.

Stealth (or maybe better for alertness)?
PG, beginning of chapter 14
"Who are you watching for?"
"What?" I said. "What do you mean?"
"You rubbernecked so much on the way here, I'm surprised your shoulders aren't bruising your ears"
"Oh, that.  Someone was tailing me tonight."

Might (PG 306)
She was in great shape, but no one's exercise program includes running up several hundred feet of spiral stairs in full mail and helmet carrying a big-ass hammer and a sword.

Presence (PG 380)
I'd gained the moral support of the Council present there tonight, and I'd wielded it against him like a sword, chopping off his options and maneuvering him into bending to my will.

Weapons (PG 326)
The top of his jump was about ten feet off the snow, and when he came down he held the saber in both hands.  The iron weapons sliced cleanly through the ogre's breastbone and filleted the monster, splitting him open like a steaming baked potato.

Here's Michael swinging his sword, for Weapons, (Grave Peril, Ch. 5):

Michael shouted, and swept Amoracchius at the spirit. The great blade bit into her back with a wooden-sounding thunk and made her arch up, screaming in pain. It was a deathblow.

Here are some more.  I think these are new, but I didn't check this time to see if they've been posted already.
FYI: For convenience, I have stripped out most of the books' formatting by running the text together and ignoring paragraph boundaries.

I love this image of Murphy that Harry sees when he looks at her through his Sight!
Presence
The door burst open. Murphy came through it, her eyes living flames of azure blue, her hair a golden coronet around her. She held a blazing sword in her hand and she shone so bright and beautiful and terrifying in her anger that it was hard to see.
(Grave Peril, chap 13, page 105)
If you want more of the quote, it continues:
The Sight, I realized dimly. I was seeing her for who she was.

Here are two about the Archive.
Presence
I extended my senses gingerly toward her. The air around her fairly hummed with power, different from what I would expect from another wizard, but strong all the same, a quiet and dangerous buzz like that around high-tension power lines.
(Death Masks, chap 10, page 108)

Presence
The girl had power. She had a hell of a lot of power. ...text omitted... She regarded me with implacable blue eyes I suddenly did not want to take the chance of looking into.
(Death Masks, chap 10, page 109)

Empathy
I looked in Susan's eyes and saw hope there for just a moment. (Death Masks, chap 14, page 145)

Empathy
The insult relieved me a little. If he was able to be a wiseass he'd probably be OK. (Death Masks, chap 9, page 103)

Empathy This could also work for Investigation.
I stared at him for a minute and got a hunch, a solid intuition of which I was completely sure. Denton was hiding something. He knew something and wasn't talking.  Don't ask me how I knew it, but something about him, about the way the veins bulged in his forehead, or the way he held his neck so stiffly, made me think so.
(Fool Moon, chap 2, page 22)

Investigation
"I snuck downstairs so I could listen to Dad tell Mom what had happened. "  ...text omitted...
"Do you eavesdrop on every private conversation you can?"  ...text omitted...
"No one says anything interesting in a public conversation, do they?"
(Death Masks, chap 15, page 156)

Investigation (The last sentence could be cut; it would fit into Alertness.)
I kept my head down, my hands in my pockets, and walked toward the harbor. I didn't rubberneck around, but I tried to look at everything while moving only my eyes.
I didn't see anyone but I couldn't shake the impression that I was being observed.
(Death Masks, chap 12, page 121)

Might
Michael picked me up as though I weighed no more than one of children. (Grave Peril, chap 31, page 287)

Stealth or Burglary It would work for either.
I put my hands on the grate and pushed it as gently as I could. It slid soundlessly from the wall and I set it one side. ...text omitted...
I needed only a few seconds to creep out, and nip the Shroud and get back into the vents. ...text omitted...
I slipped out of the vents, thinking silent thoughts. A long stretch put my fingertips on the tube's carrying strap.
(Death Masks, chap 19, page 211)

That's it for the moment.

A few more...

Weapons
Michael stepped over me and Sanya, Amoracchius in hand, and shouted as he lunged forward, both hands driving the weight of the sword at the closed steel door. The sword went through the door, sinking almost to the hilt. [text omitted]
Michael drew the sword back out of the door. Blood gleamed wet and scarlet along the length of the weapon's blade.
(Death Masks, chap 31, page 332)

Here are a couple with Harry using his staff in a non-magical capacity.
Weapons (maybe Fists as well?)
Just as I got to chapel's door, it swung open and two men come out, both of them snapping clips into submachine guns. One of them didn't look up in time to see me, so I checked him in the forehead with a double-handed thrust of my staff, getting my whole weight behind the blow. His head snapped back and he dropped.
(Death Masks, chap 31, page 333)

Weapons
The other gunman started to bring his weapon up, but I batted the weapon away with a sweep of my staff, then snapped the end of it hard against his nose.
(Death Masks, chap 31, page 333)

Fists:
Proven Guilty 238

"He had bruises on his face, on one arm, and the knuckles on both his hands were torn and ragged.
Micheal's son had been throwing punches.  It hadn't done any good, but he'd fought."

Weapons
Proven Guilty 85
"He brought the sickle down on Rawlins.  The cop managed to catch the force of it upon his long flashlight. Sparks flew from the steel case, but the light held. The maniac twisted the sickle, so that the tip plowed a furrow across Rawlins's forearm. The cop snarled.  The flashlight spun to the ground.  The maniac raised his sickle again."

These are all from Summer Knight. I've edited them to leave just the dialogue.

For either Presence or Rapport (making a good first impression). Both are from chapter 4:

Harry: 'Hey, I'm supposed to wear a robe. we all are.'
Ebenezar: 'Somehow I don't think a plaid flannel bath robe is what they had in mind.'

Also for Presence or Rapport:

Harry: 'My cat used my good robe as a litter box.'

And for Scholarship (languages) from chapter 5:

Harry: 'What?'
Ebenezar: 'Well. First you said, "I am a sorry excuse, Merlin, a sad long day held me. I need me a different laundress.'
Harry: 'What?'
Ebenezar: 'That's what the Merlin said. Then you said "Excuses to you for my being dressed and I also make lately."'
Harry: 'Goddamned correspondence course. Maybe you should translate for me.'
Ebenezar: 'Happy to.'

This could easily be edited down a little more and still give a pretty good impression of Harry's scholarly skills.

I'm loving these later additions though.
Title: Re: The Dresden Files RPG Book Quote Scavenger Hunt

Deceit
I kept my duck blind of a smile in place, and mouthed appropriately polite phrases in the right spots.  My cheeks had already started hurting. (Death Masks, chap 19, page 197)

Deceit
(I know this next one is too long; I'm sure parts could be dropped.)
Then I reached into my pocket and dropped a quarter on the floor near him. "There's a pay phone on the other side of the parking lot, past a patch of broken glass. You'd better get yourself an ambulance." I turned and walked out the door without looking back. ...text omitted...
The Russian grinned. "Was that a quarter you gave Cassius?" "Yeah." "For the phone?" "Yeah."
Michael noted, " Phone calls cost more than that now."
(Death Masks, chap 28, pages 301-302)

Discipline
The lights and the noise made it a little difficult to keep my concentration, and I felt the spell I'd woven around me wobble. I closed my eyes for a second, until I had it stabilized again. (Death Masks, chap 1, page 1)

Discipline?
There are things you can't walk away from. Not if you want to live with yourself afterward.
(Death Masks, chap 14, page 145)

Endurance
The cold grew more intense, more painful, I couldn't escape it. I panicked, thrashing wildly, dull pain flaring in my bound limbs, and away into numbness under the cold.
(Death Masks, chap 21, page 228)

and a little later.
I didn't have much energy. After a few minutes,  I hung panting and hurting and too tired to struggle any more, the water only getting colder, bound limbs screaming.  I hurt, but figured the pain couldn't get any worse.  A few hours went by and showed me how wrong I was.
(Death Masks, chap 21, page 228)

Fists
Benn didn't give us any warning. She just moved, fast and hard, stepping toward Murphy. There was a quick blur of motion. Murphy's hands got there before the blow landed, and she turned, somehow levering Benn's weight off from her legs and slamming the grey-maned woman into a wall.
(Fool Moon, chap 2, page 20)

Intimidation  I like the childishness in this one.
"Hi, " I said in a loud voice, and stepped up to my door.  I towered over Blandman. And I had a great big gun in my hand, even if I did keep it pointed down at the floor.  "I'm Harry Dresden." (Death Masks, chap 4, page 42)

Intimidation or possibly Contacts
"Ventas servitas," I hissed, nice and dramatic, and threw some will at the door. Sudden wind slammed it shut right in front of his eyes. He squeaked, and backed up several paces, staring at the door, then whirling to face me.
I used the remnants of the same spell to push out a chair opposite me. "Sit down Morty, I've got a few questions." (Grave Peril, chap 10, page 83)

Michael had gone to his wife and crouched down beside her. He got his arms underneath her and lifted her as though she were a basket of laundry. Like I said before, Michael's buff.

Here are more quotes.  I just can't seem to stop myself.

Alertness  This one is hilarious. I hope it holds up out of context.
Thomas's senses evidently didn't compete with mine, because the Black Court vampire was up to its shoulders in the Beetle before he choked out a startled, "Holy crap!"
(Blood Rites chap 3, page 21)

Investigation?
Think. If I were an arrogant, psychotic demon-collaborating terrorist out to trigger an apocalypse, where would I be?
(Death Masks, chap 31, page 331)

Athletics or even Fists
I made like a ballplayer, slid in feet first, and planted the heel of my boot squarely on the end of the demon's nose. I'm not heavily built, but I'm most of a head taller than six feet, and no one ever thought I was a lightweight. I kicked the demon hard enough to make it screech and veer off.
(Blood Rites chap 1, page 2)

Craftsmanship
I'd done some makeshift repairs with several one-by-sixes, some hanger wire, some cheap padding from the camping section at Wal-Mart, and a lot of duct tape. It gave the car a real postmodern look: By which I meant that it looked like something fashioned from the wreckage of a major nuclear exchange.
(Blood Rites, chap 1, page 11)

Lore
People don't believe in the supernatural these days. Supernatural things are scary. It's much more comfortable to rest secure in the knowledge that no one can reach out with magic and quietly kill you.
(Death Masks, chap 1, page 3)

Might
I was about halfway there when something ripped the steel doors off the school inward, against the swing of the hinges. A loud low bellow erupted from inside the building, and then a Kong-sized version of the chimp-demons came stomping out of the doorway.
(Blood Rites, chap 1, page 4)

Here's a couple for Rapport:

"Modern living might suck. And the world we've made can be a dark place. But at least I don't have to be there alone.

I put an arm around Nick's shoulders, and grinned at him. "It's like I keep telling you, man. You've got to have faith."

-Restoration of Faith

"Oh," I said. I rubbed at my jaw. "You think I should have gone four-color?"

Bob stared at me for a second and said, "I have nightmares about hell, where all I do is add up numbers and try to have conversations with people like you."

-from "The Vignette"

And one for Deceit:

"I held on to a flash of bad temper. "The point," I told Bob, "is to have an advertisement that looks solid, professional and reliable."

"Yeah. Advertising is all about lying," Bob said.

"Hey!"

Intimidation
I felt cold stone flow into the features of my face, into the timbre of my voice.
...
The change in tone hit her hard. She blinked at me in surprise for a second, lips parted but empty of sound.
...
She stared at me in utter shock.
...
I leaned closer, staring coldly, and she leaned away, declining to make eye contact. "Now buckle the f*** up." She did.
(Proven Guilty, chap 9, page 59, hardcover)

Investigation
There was a large splotch of [blood] on the floor, and it had been smeared around when it had been making the tile all slippery. There were a couple of different footmarks on the floor, outlined in blood, and more smears of it on one of the sinks, where the victim had apparently tried to pull himself up off the floor. It looked fairly gruesome, which wasn't really a surprise. There wasn't as much blood as there would have been at, say, a murder, but there was plenty all the same.
(Proven Guilty, chap 11, page 77, hardcover)

And another one for Rapport
"Give me a ride home?" I asked.
She already had her keys in her hand. "Do I look like your driver?"
"Thanks, Murph."

Endurance: (I think Harry's ability to see things thru is just as important as his ability to take a head shot.)

Hope twitched somewhere inside me... "Yeah? What did they say?"

His smile widened. "That the White Council's unyielding policy is one of nonnegotiation with terrorists."

Hope's corpse went through some postmortem twitching.

Investigation:

"Hey!" I protested. "Are you selllng me on eBay?"

Crane winked at me. "Ironic, eh? Though I confess a bit of surprise. How do you know what it is?"

"I read." I told him.

Deceit:

"...deceitful, wicked, clever girl. If this works I'll buy you a pony." SK 311
Empathy:
The attack was a bloody, brutal, violent, reprehensible killing. Cain's brother Abel probably never saw it coming. As I opened the door to my apartment, I was filled with a sense of empathic sympathy and intuitive understanding. For freaking Cain. DB 1

Fists:
I don't hit girls. DB 256
Guns:
"Nasty. Anyone who knows their way around a kusari is a tough customer."

"Damn right, we shoot him."
Intimidation:
"If anything happens to Murphy and I even think you had a hand in it, f*ck right and wrong. If you touch her, I'm declaring war on you. Personally. I'm picking up every weapon I can get. And I'm using them to kill you. Horribly." DB 389
"I gave you a chance."
"Mouse, kill him" DB 338
Might:
The ghoul let out a scream and stared up at Sue in naked terror, covering his head with his arms. Sue ate him. Snap. Gulp. No more ghoul. DB 356
Rapport:
"What was that about?"
"Erlking, big-time bad guy. Wanted to eat me."
"Why?"
"Well. I met him." PG 324
Scholarship:
"What's with that?"
"Just covering his head with his arms? Didn't he see the lawyer in the movie?"
"Those who do not learn the lessons of history are doomed to repeat them." DB 356

Resources I found a whole bunch.

My stomach made an unhappy noise. It was almost as empty as my wallet.
(Fool Moon 1:1)

The walls [of the lab] were lined with wire racks, and I'd filled them with Tupperware, boxes, bags, tubs, bottles, cups, bowls, and urns. Most of the containers had a label listing their contents, ingredients for any number of potions, spells, summonings, and magical devices I had occasion to make from time to time.
(Blood Rites 5:34)

Hot water. Ye gods. There are no words to describe how good a hot shower feels after several years of living with no water heater of your own.
(Blood Rites 20:152)

I guess if [he] could afford a house that size, he could afford a water heater to match it, because I ran the shower as hot as I could stand for almost half an hour and it never got cold.
(Blood Rites 20:153)

The house we finally pulled up to had multiple wings, multiple stories, and couple of faux-castle turrets. It had cost someone eight digits, and could have doubled as the headquarters for the villain in a James Bond movie.
(Blood Rites 18:139)

I had enough to cover [the bill], but only because I managed to find a couple of quarters in the various pockets of my duster. I left the money on the table. There wasn't enough for a tip.
(Blood Rites 23:189)

I got a couple of quotes.

Investigation
Death Masks pg 123 (paperback)
"I watched as she put the phone down and casually let the nightgown fall to the floor.  I watched a little more.  I wasn't being a peeping Tom.  This was professional.  I noted that she had some intriguing curves.  See?  Professionalism in action."

Intimidation
Proven Guilty pg 150 (paperback)
"I walked into the place looking like I was hoping to kick someone in the neck because it was a hell of a lot easier to discourage potential predators ahead of time than it was to slug it out with them when they followed me out afterward."

I'm doing some rereading I'll probably have more soon.

Most of these involve firearms finesse or intimidation with guns.

Guns or Athletics?
[She] had the reflexes that were depressingly common in all three vampire types, and she darted out of the way of the flames. She leveled both guns at me as she did, blazing away like those Hong Kong action movies.
(Blood Rites 16:119)

Guns
{I} drew out a great big Dirty Harry Callahan number that weighed about seventy-five thousand pounds.
(Death Masks 4:41)

(I'm not quite sure where this fits, if anywhere, but it does involve a gun.)
"If you like, think of the precautions as a compliment."
I folded my arms. "Because nothing says flattery like a gun to the head."
(Blood Rites 10:76)

Guns or Intimidation (I couldn't believe that no one suggested this one already.)
"So I'd use a rifle at a thousand yards. The bullet outruns its own sonic boom, and you'd never even hear the shot. You'd be dead before you realized what happened."
(Blood Rites 10:78)

Intimidation
Apparently a gun held to the back of my head engenders a sense of fellowship and goodwill in the depths of my soul.
I cooperated.
(Blood Rites 10:74)

Murphy put the mouth of the riot gun against [his] spine and said, "How good is that armor?"
(Blood Rites 31:263)

"If you make any noise or start to get up, I'll probably twitch, and this trigger is pretty sensitive. My gun is pointed at your nose. The ensuing cause-and-effect chain reaction could be inconvenient for you."
(Blood Rites 10:75)

Fists (Ah, philadelphia, maybe this one belongs in Rapport? ;) )
My vision went red with rage and I hit him in the face for the second time in six hours. He fell to the floor, twisted his hips, and swept my legs out from under me.  I hit the ground, and [he] piled on to me; going for an armlock. I got a leg underneath me and sank my teeth into his arm as he tried to get it around my neck. I pushed up and slammed him against a wall with my body, and we both staggered apart.
(Blood Rites 21:163)

Edit: 'cause I forgot some.

Lore
Proven Guilty, ch 34
"I have someone who can help. Only she's totally unable to help me."

Murphy scowled at me, then said, "You're enjoying this. You just love to dance around questions, and spring surprises when you know something the rest of us don't."

"It's like heroin for wizards," I confirmed.

Conviction
Storm Front, ch 24
A man's magic demonstrates what sort of person he is, what is held most deeply inside  of him. There is no truer gauge of a man's character than the way in which he employs his strength, his power.

I was not a murderer. I was not like Victor Sells. I was Harry Blackstone Copperfield Dresden. I was a wizard. Wizards control their power. They don't let it control them. And wizards don't use magic to kill people. They use it to discover, to protect, to mend, to help. Not to destroy.

Bit of a grab bag of quotes this time.
(Book, Chapter: Page#)

Investigation (deduction, insight)
And I felt worse, a moment later, when I looked out the car window at the full moon and realized something that I should have put together an hour before -- the real killer or killers were still out there.
(Fool Moon 13:118)

Might
The walls shook around the beast, as though its very presence was enough to make reality shudder. Bloodstained drool spilled from its foaming jaws, and its green eyes blazed with hellish fury. The thing had laughed off bullets fired into its skull at point-blank range.
(Fool Moon 18:177)

Performance or possibly Deceit
I didn't know if I could kill him, but there was no reason to let him think I wasn't confident about it.
(Death Masks 1:13)

(Not really sure what category this one belongs in, if any. My initial thought was performance.)
Thomas's grin had so much life that it was practically sentient.
(Blood Rites 19:145)

Stealth
We started a game of shadow-haunted hide-and-seek in the little garden, Tera and me against the agents behind us. She moved like a wraith, in utter silence, smooth and steady in the black shadows and silver light of the moon overhead.
(Fool Moon 13:122)

Weapons
But even with centuries of experience, I doubted any of [the vampires of the Black Court] had ever been hit with a water balloon.
Or with a holy-water balloon.
(Blood Rites 3:20)

I can't believe no one's posted this one yet:

Burglary:
"Wait a minute. Where did you say this thing was stolen from?"
"The Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist."
"In northern Italy."
He nodded.
"In Turin, to be exact."
He nodded again.
"Someone stole the freaking Shroud of Turin?"

Death Masks, pg 27-28
If needed, it could just be pared down to the last line.

Conviction:

“For the sake of one soul.  For one loved on.  For one life.”  I called power into my blasting rod, an its tip glowed incandescent white.  “The way I see it, there is nothing else worth fighting a war for.”

Grave Peril, p.267

Weapons:

The old man’s sword was not reflecting light.  It was emitting it.  The water-patterned steel of the blade glowed with a steady silver flame that slowly grew brighter.

Death Masks, p. 63

Performance:

Nipple erection on command- now that’s method acting.

Grave Peril, p. 25

Burglary
Butters: "No you have to buy the expansion for that...maybe we could go back and get it?"
Harry: "One little burglary and you've gone all habitual." (Dead Beat, 347)

Also, I know someone already posted it, but I just want to second the following suggestion.

Intimidate
"I walked into the place like I was hoping to kick someone in the neck, becease it was a hell of a lot easier to discourage potential predators ahead of time..." (Proven Guilty, 150)

Deceit or Burglary:
I walked in wearing a hat with an FTD logo and carrying a long white flower box under one arm. I nodded to an aging security guard at a desk and went on past him to the stairs, my steps purposeful. You'd be surprised how far a hat, a box, and a confident stride can get you. -Summer Knight, pg 130

Fists:
So I took a calculated risk, used my free hand, and hit him [Morgan] as hard as I could in the mouth.
I think the blow startled him more than anything. He took a step back, letting go of my arm in surprise, and just blinked at me. He put one hand to his mouth, and when he drew his fingers away, there was blood on them.
I planted my feet and faced him, without meeting his eyes. "Don't touch me." -Storm Front, pg 81

[...]I drove my fist at his nose as hard as I could. I don't carry a lot of power on my own when I punch. But when I added in the kinetic energy stored in the ring, my fist became a battering ram of bone and flesh, flattening the man's nose in a gout of blood, and sending him sprawling to the ground six feet away. - Fool Moon, pg 83

Presence::
Marcone was a civilizing influence on crime-and where he operated, it was more of a problem in terms of scale than ever before. An extremely shrewd businessman, he had a battery of lawyers working for him that kept him fenced in from the law behind a barricade of depositions and papers and tape recordings. The cops never said it, but sometimes it seemed like they were almost reluctant to chase him.  -Storm Front, pg 24

Gentleman Johnny Marcone didn't look like the sort of man who would have my legs broken or my jaw wired shut. His salt-and-pepper hair was cut short, and there were lines from sun and smiling etched into the corners of his eyes. His eyes were the green of well-worn dollar bills. He seemed more like a college football coach: good-looking, tanned, athletic, and enthusiastic. The impression was reinforced by the men he kept with him. Cujo Hendricks hulked like an all-pro player who had been ousted for extreme unnecessary roughness. -Storm Front, pg 31

Resources:
I tried not to look over her shoulder at the calendar I had hanging on the wall, and the red circle around the fifteenth of last month. Late rent. Need money. Even with the fee from today and what I would make in the future, it would take the city forever to pay up. -Storm Front, pg 43

Cha-ching. Five hundred dollars would take care of last month's rent and a good bit of this month's, too. I could get into this bit with nervous clients wanting to preserve the anonymity of their checking accounts from my supposed sorcerous might. Cash always spends.
"That will be fine, yes," I told her. I tried not to fondle the envelope. At least I wasn't crass enough to dump the money on my desk and count it out. -Storm Front, pg 46

First, the money. It was all in fifties, which always look new even when they're years old because they get so little circulation. There were ten of them. I put them in my wallet, and trashed the envelope. -Storm Front, pg 47

He [Bob] was rocking back and forth on his jawbones in excitement. "Now, just a teaspoon of powdered diamond, and we're done."
I rubbed at my eyes. "Diamond. I don't have any diamonds, Bob."
"I figured. You're cheap, that's why women don't like you. Look, just tear up a fifty into real little pieces and put that in there."
"A fifty-dollar bill?" I demanded.
"Money," Bob opined, "Very sexy."
I muttered and got the remaining fifty out of my pocket, shredding it and tossing it in to complete the potion. -Storm Front, pg 97

I went to one of the cafes inside, sat down, and ordered myself a cup of coffee. I had to pay for it with change. Most of my money had gone into paying off last month's rent and into the love potion I'd let Bob talk me into making. Money. [...] I didn't want to get out of hot water with the White Council only to lose my office and apartment because I couldn't pay the bills. -Storm Front, pg 131

Marcone was on the up and up. He was offering me a dream job, with virtually no commitment, and as much money as I could want. There was even a clause that specified that I would not be asked or expected to perform any unlawful acts.
With that kind of money, I could live the life I wanted. I could stop scraping for every dollar, running my legs off working for every paranoid looney who wanted to hire me to investigate his great-aunt's possessed cow. I could catch up on reading, finally, do the magical research I'd been itching to do for the past few years. -Fool Moon, pg 90

Resources or Driving: On the other hand, I didn't have much choice. I didn't have any money for a cab, even if I could get one this far from the city. I didn't have a car. I was in no shape to walk anywhere.  -Fool Moon, pg 152

That's it for the moment....  Will do more searching, and will post more in a bit.

Investigation:
Death Masks Pg 123 (Paperback)
“I watched as she put the hone down and casually let the nightgown slide to the floor. I watched a little more. I wasn’t being a peeping Ton. This was professional. I noted that she had some intriguing curves. See? Professionalism in action.”

Lore:
Storm Front Pg 103 (Paperback)
“Wizardry is all about thinking ahead, about being prepared. Wizards aren’t superhuman. We just have a leg up on seeing things more clearly than other people, and being able to use the extra information that we have to our benefit. Hell, the word wizard comes from the same root as wise. Congratulations, Iago!

I'm starting my retabulation of the quotes.

And FYI:

Unsure of the book but:
Mechanincs: "I called my mechaninc Mike, he's the Jesus Christ of mechanincs, and he said the Beetle was ready."

I'm not gonna be able to use that one.  I need exact quotes with book citations.  FYI.

I'd really love to get some specific book titles to associate with these two.  Could someone supply?

Rapport-

"No, sometimes I'm asleep."

and

"Who the hell are you?"

Hey guys!  By and large, y'all have knocked it out of the park (holy crap, the amount of resources quotes were incredible).  There are just a few more things I'd love to see.

SKILLS THAT COULD STILL USE ATTENTION

I would adore getting just a little more effort on this short list:

HANDING OUT THE THANK-YOU REWARDS

I'll be posting shortly with a list of names of people I'll want to contact me for their free Don't Rest Your Head PDF.  If you made it into my quote-file, you'll be on the list.  If you think you submitted something valid and I missed you, speak up, once the list is posted!

Italicized portion is most relevant.

Discipline:
It took Molly better than twenty minutes to focus her mind for the comparatively simple spell.  Focus of intention, of will, is intreral to any use of magic.  I'd drawn myself up to focus power so often and for so long that I only had to actually make a conscious effort to do it when a spell was particularly complex, dangerous, or when I thought it wise to be slow and cautious.  Most of the time, it took me less tahn a second to gather up my will-- which is critical in any situation where speed is a factor. White Night, pg 24.

Empathy is my favorite SotC skill, so I feel compelled to take a stab at a quote.

[/li][li] Empathy: This is mostly taken care of -- but in Storm Front, when Harry's on the phone with the chauffeur lady, he does a number of Empathy-like things, and that's glaringly missing.  I'd love it if someone could hit this one.

I didn't see anything when he was on the phone with her (she shut him down too quickly), but during their face-to-face there were a bunch.

1. Storm Front (CH 10 page 127)

"She took another drag, and this time I saw a small shake to her fingers, one she quickly hid. Just not quickly enough. She was nervous. Nervous enough to be shaking, and now I could see what she was up to. She was wearing the alley-cat mask, appealing to my glands instead of my brain, and trying to distract me with it, trying to keep me from finding something out."

2. Storm Front (CH 10 page 128)

"I'm not inhuman. I can be distracted by a pretty face, or body, like any other youngish man. Linda Randall was damned good at playing the part. But I do not like to be made the fool.
So, Miss Sex Goddess. What are you hiding?"

3. Storm Front (CH 10 page 128)

"Her eyes were roving about now, nervous, like a cat who has found herself shut into a closed room."

4. Storm Front (CH 10 page 129)

"She pressed her lips together and shook her head. She shook her head and she lied as lied to me as she did it. I was sure of it. She was closing in, tightening up, and if there was nothing she could tell me, she wouldn't be trying to hide it."

And a Discipline one:

Storm Front (page 127)

"Her expression promised to show me things that you don't talk about with other people, if I would give her half a chance. Your job, Harry. Think about your job."

Since no one has given Deceit quote for Thomas here goes:

So let me get this straight.  You want me to help save the girl, overthrow the dark lord, and defend the innocents terrorized by dark magice," I said.  "And you want me to do it because you're my long-lost half brother, who needs somenone noble to stand beside him in a desperate battle for what's right."

He grimaced.  "That phrasing has way more melodrama in it than I would have used."

"You've got to be kidding me.  That's a really lame con."

"Give me some credit, Dresden,"  He sighed.  "I know how to con.  If you were really just another mark, I'd have come up with a better story."

-Blood Rites, Chapter 21, pg. 165-166

Another option:

"The night is young," I said.  "Give me one good reason why I shouldn't kill you like the lying treacherous vampire sleaze you are?"

"Because you can trust me," he said.  I want to help you.

I snorted.  "Why the hell should I believe you?"

"You shouldn't." he said.  "Don't.  I'm a good liar.  One of the best.  I'm not asking ypou to believe me.  Believe the circumstances.  We have a common interest."

...and on the same page...

Michael shook his head.  "He's a liar, Harry.  I can tell just by being this close to him."

"Yes, yes, yes," Thomas said.  I confess to it.  But at the moment , it isn't part of my agenda to lie to anyone.  I just want her back."

-Grave Peril, Chapter 31, pg. 294 (both quotes)

Fantastic; thanks for the follow-ups.

I'm thinking I also remember something in Grave Peril -- around the 300's in terms of page position -- with Lea riding a horse?  Could someone track that down for me so I can grab it for the Survival skill?

Survival, short and to the point. Rest of the time, she's pretty much just sitting there.

Grave Peril (Ch33)

"Lea laid a hand on her horse's neck, and the savage beast calmed."

Title: Re: The Dresden Files RPG Book Quote Scavenger Hunt

Survival (animal handling)

From Grave Peril chapter 21

“One of her hounds appeared out of the darkness, and crouched beside her, fastening its dark eyes upon me. She laid a fond hand upon its broad head and it shivered in pleasure.”

From Blood Rites (chapter 3)
“It was the insane little notched-eared pup. He ignored me, still growling, and started shaking his head back and forth violently. ‘Good thing we had a stowaway. Vamp might have gotten us both.”

From Grave Peril (chapter 7)
“But it didn’t feel right, to not have Mister run up to me and bowl my shins in greeting. That should have been enough to tip me off.”

To bad dress isn’t under a category, there are some really good quotes for that.

I think driving could be an alright suggestion for Sue ??? No, convection sounds a lot better. I hope my suggestions help but, I can't wait for the game.

Yes I agree the paint ball gun is a great wepon but most stores don't sell holy water filled paint balls!

Dead Beat

Weapons :
“I’m fresh out of vorpal swords,” my father said. He reached into the pack and tossed me a miniature candy bar. “ The closest I can get is a Snickers snack”(p113)

Survival:  (Animal related)
The Erlking flung himself up onto the black steed’s back and let loose an eerie cry. When he did, all the howling music of the dogs, primitive and fierce, seemed to congeal into flashes of lightning that leapt up from the ground and into the clouds. For a second there was silence, and then the screaming winds warbled and whistled into deeper, more terrifying howls than any dog had ever uttered.(321)

Deceit:
“Why, yes,” Cowl said, and what sounded like a genuine laugh bubbled in his voice. “We smile at one another and play nicely all in the name of Kemmler’s greater glory, of course. But we are all planning on killing one another as soon as it’s convenient.(323)

Blood Rites

Investigation:
“I’ve narrowed it down.” Bob said.
“How narrow?”
“Uh.” the skull said. “It isn’t in any of the strip clubs.”
“Bob!” I demanded. “You were running around strip joints all day?”(176-177)

Survival:
“He’s the dog with no name. Like Clint Eastwood, but fuzzier.”

White Knight

“No force in the known universe can make a gang of folks naming their organization in Latin do much of anything on time. If they’re all there by four, we’ll know there’s some kind of black magic involved.”
            -p. 41
“You can get more with a kind word and well-applied kinetomancy than with just a kind word.”
            -p. 146
“Torrents of flame, blasts of force, and impenetrable bastions of will were sort of my thing. You will note, however, how seldom words like torrent, blast, and bastion get used in conjunction with terms that denote delicacy and precision.”

Craftsmanship, specifically, quotes involving Mike the mechanic:

From Blood Rites, p. 360:
Monday afternoon I got the Blue Beetle back from my mechanic, Mike, who is the automative repair equivalent of Jesus Christ himself. Either that or Dr. Frankenstein.

From Storm Front, p. 62:
Mike is a super mechanic.  He never asked questions about the burns that slagged a hole in the front latch or the claw marks that ruined both the doors. You can't pay for service like that.

From Fool Moon, p. 11:
Mike has declared that the VW bug is the easiest car in the world to repair, and so that's what I drive.  He keeps it running eight or nine days in ten.  That's phenomenal.

From Grave Peril, p. 124:
My mechanic, Mike, who can keep the Beetle running most days, hadn't asked any questions.  He'd just replaced the parts with pieces of other Volkswagens, so that the Blue Beetle  was technically blue, red, white, and green.  But my appellation stuck.

I'm not sure it fits perfectly, but I don't remember it being mentioned before;

Performance
'Okay, then. Someone get a pizza and a Coke and some dice, but I want it understood that I'm going to need thews.'
Billy blinked at me. 'What?'
'Thews,' I said. 'I want big, bulging thews, and I don't want to have to think too much.'
-Summer Knight, second-to-last page

I just find the idea of such a quote in an RPG amusing.  ;D

Well, if things are still being looked at for acceptance, I wonder why no one has offered this for Stealth:

Stealth:
"Do you have any suggestions of where we should start looking?"

Marcone ignored the sarcasm, flicked a switch on the sight on his rifle, and pointed it negligently at the tree line. "Over there ought to do."

The red dot of the laser sight settled onto a leaf six inches to the left of my head, and the thready pulse of fear in my chest turned into an icy white streak of terror.
Fool Moon: Chapter 29

Not needed apparently, but this "weapon" quote stuck with me as the previous situation.

Weapons:
Murphy snarled, crawling on her hands and knees, dragging the chain saw with her. She lifted it again and drove it at the creature's head, engine racing, blade singing through the air. The chlorofiend screamed in protest and frustration, lifting the stumps (hah hah, get it, stumps?) of its arms in feeble defense. Murphy tore through them with the chain saw, snicker-snack, and then drove the blade directly between the chlorofiend's glowing green eyes.

Summer Knight: Chapter 21

I'm surprised nobody's posted these.

The first is pure unadulterated
Craftsmanship:

"She [Charity] put the hammer over her shoulder, balancing its weight with one arm, and turned to me. She looked ferocious, so armed and armored, and the heavy black stain around her eyes didn't do anything to soften the image. Ferocious, hell. She looked competent-and dangerous.
Everyone just stared at her.
She arched a golden eyebrow,'I make all of my husband's armor,' she said calmly, 'as well as his spare weaponry. By hand.' -PG, 326

Discipline:

"I opened my eyes and everything came into a brilliantly sharp focus that discounted the existence of anything except myself, my magic and the ritual awaiting me. It had been a long, wearying preparation, and I hadn't even started with the magic yet, but if the spell could help me nail the bad guys quicker, the hours of effort would be well worth it.
Silence and focus ruled.
I was ready.
And then the F**king phone rang about a foot from my ear." -PG, 53 (paperback)

Another:

"Stupid phone. Stupid car crash. I tried to think positive, because I read somewhere that it's important to do that at times of stress and frustration. Whoever wrote that was probably selling something.
I picked up the phone and growled, 'Screw thinking positive,' into the headset.
'Um,' said a woman's voice. 'What did you say?'
'Screw thinking positive!...'" PG, 54

This one's from Small Favor, So I put it in spoiler tags.

-Small Favor, pg.52

Empathy:

"'Morgan,' I said, 'Stars and stones man. Please don't do this. She's a child. We should be helping her.'
My words slowed him, and he froze in place for a terrible heartbeat. Then he closed his eyes and swallowed, his face twisting with nausea. He opened his eyes again and whispered, 'Step aside, Dresden. Please.'" - PG, 444-445 (Paperback)

Resources:

"'Wizarding doesn't pay much,' I said, 'You'd be surprised how much stuff I get from Wal-Mart.'" -PG, 182

Another non-Spoiler from Small Favor and it might also work for Discipline:

Might and Rapport, I think:

p. 354 of the softcover of Summer Knight:

I stretched out my hand, adrenaline and pain giving me plenty of fuel for the magic, and called "Ventas servitas!" Wind leapt out in a sudden spurt, seizing the Unraveling and tearing it from Aurora's fingers, sending it spinning through the air towards me. I caught it, stuck my tongue out at Aurora, yelled, "Meep meep!" and ran like hell.

For Investigation, from "Death Masks":

Butters cleared his throat and said, "The germs are gone."
"Germs?" I asked.
"In the samples I took from that body. I ran all the checks again just to make sure, and better than half of them turned up negative."

For Fists, from "Blood Rites":

"Hey, Stallings," she said, loudly enough to be heard by the whole gym. "What just happened here?"
The older opponent grinned and said, "O'Toole just got beat up by a girl, Lieutenant."

For Burglary, from "Summer Knight":

You'd be surprised at how far a hat, a box and a confident stride can get you.

For Might, from "Summer Knight":

With one hand, he casually lifted a sofa that had to weigh a couple of hundred pounds and peered under it. I drew back from the door again. Fisticuffs, bad idea. Definitely a bad idea.

Doubtless more to come...

THis could be Intimidation or Presence, depending on how you look at it

"Predators respond to body language. I walked like I was on my way to rip someone's face off."

Dead Beat Ch.7

Investigation

"They might have been Heaven-on-wheels when it came to taking on bad guys in a fight, but they weren't investigators. They couldn't run these thieves down the way i could"

Death Masks Ch. 9

Endurance(kind of)

"I answered it and Morgan, half his face covered in blood, gasped 'The Wardens are coming. Hide me. Please.' His eyes rolled back into his skull and he collapsed.
Oh.
Super."-Turn Coat, page 1

Maybe a little long, but the best book beginning of all time.

Rapport and kind of Fists

"An intercom on the wall near the camera clicked and buzzed. "He's got a point," said Rawlins' voice. "I can't see it all from here. Move him a couple of feet to the left and give me about thirty more seconds before you start on his nads. I'm making popcorn."-Turn coat, p.229

Ok, i know Running is not listed as one of the skills that still need quotes, but i just love this one for running, so i had to drop it here.

Small Favor, Chapter 44

"Now, I’m not as strong as those really big guys, like Michael and Sanya. I don’t do swordplay as well as folks like Nicodemus or Shiro. I don’t yet have the magical experience and know-how to outfinesse the really experienced wizards and sorcerers who have been hanging around for centuries, like the Gatekeeper or Thorned Namshiel.

But I’ll take any of those guys in a footrace."

Lore: From Last Call:
She muttered to herself. She poured some of the beer out into the beaker and held it up to the light from a specially prepared candle. She scrawled power calculations on a notebook.

And twenty minutes later, she said, “Hah. Tricky, but not tricky enough.”

Not sure if this has been mentioned yet, and I know I'm late to the party, but here goes...

I'm resurrecting this thread because I accidentally fell across it and think it's pretty cool and that people would have fun reading it.  So it's more of a bump than an addition to the thread.   In fact, it might even help new players use skills for their games.

Besides, there's been several more books published since this thread was last updated.  So it might be fun if people wanted to keep adding to it...obviously, there's no prize any more.  :P

Intimidation, from Skin Game

“For a second, I wanted very badly to know a spell that would let me melt through the floor in a quivering puddle of please-don't-kill-me.”
