If I had a uterus I'd offer to bear your children!

Seriously, as I said on rpg.net, this is one gaming product I can read cover to cover.  Now that I am aware of the danger of reading the side notes while eating/drinking, I think it will be ok.

I came into work at [REDACTED] on my day off to get it printed out so I can go over it with a fine-tooth comb.

First pages look good, just memory intensive for our print server.

I'll read through it this afternoon, take copious notes and post either monday night or tuesday morning.

EDIT: Woo-hoo SoulCatcher! 500 posts!

I for one can't wait to see the final version when the "? ? ?" section of Our World has something in there!

90% of it is great so far, but I've got these weird sections with blue, mirror imaged text that's kinda killing the flow at points. May be a function of using Foxit instead of Adobe to read the pdf. Anyone else having this problem?

That said, loving the content so far.

Love it so far. Been waiting for this game for a while. Now my only problem is I have a Mage game I've been running with DF influences but now I want to run this game!!! This is my first real intro to the FATE system. So far I'm loving the magic system. I've been skipping around reading different parts of the game trying to wrap my head around it.

I just might have to run this game soon not sure yet how. Luckily a real slow day at work today so I've had plenty of time to read. Everything I've read so far has been fantastic.

I'm only beginning to get into this thing, but I'm blown away by what I've seen! The writing, the art, the layout- everything is as good as I've seen in an rpg book. No kidding.

Maybe the best compliment I can give it is that can tell it's a labor of love. I've got lots of RPGs but very few that fit that description.

I'll post more later-I've got reading to do!

That sounds unique to your experience.

It seems to be limited to when I use Foxit to open them. In Adobe the text just looks like someone used a blue highlighter on it. I'll hiss about Adobe being the devil later, book is excellent.

The 'in play' examples as things are introduced is a much better primer than the 'here's the rules, now this is them all being used at once' style some of my other favorite games use. No really arcane terminology and the side-banter is pertinent without being dry.

I have seen many games based on licensed properties. I have seen over a dozen game based on book series, comics, anime, movie sagas and most of them have the same thing in common, they all suck. They are not necessarily bad games, but they either A) Did not do enough research/ made stuff up based on assumptions, 2) too broadly focused and doesn't quite capture the feel of its license, 3) Is too narrowly focused and can capture the License and nothing else, or 4) isn't fun at all.

When I first heard about TDFRPG, I took it lightly because of all the failures I've seen in the past. When I started to see the preview content, I was fairly convinced, but still iffy.

When I saw the Baltimore chapter, power list, and Rick Neal's QA, I was sold.

This morning, I found my anticipation well founded and my Easter money from Grandmother well spent.

Being so close to the Author, the designers have really put a lot of effort into the book and into the research. There are times in my read-through I found reference to stuff in the books that I forgot about like Abby in White Night. The artwork is high quality and from various sources and capture the various crowning moments of awesome from throughout the series. I had several burst of adrenaline that kept me up til the early hours after seeing things like Chauncy, the Scarecrow and other favorites realized.

Being based on an already existing game system, the game is not too narrowly or broadly focused. If used as-is, the game will do TDF or an assortment of related ideas very easily. Since FATE has different iterations and interpretations, you can use elements from other FATE games to add missing elements into you games as desired. For example, I could use another FATE game's vehicle rules in TDF if I wanted and it wouldn't necessarily break the game.

I haven't determined fun factor yet, but already it looks promising. Why? Because I have spent the past few hours when I should be sleeping playing the game-within-a-game, City and Character creation. That is the mark of a FUN ASS GAME!!!!

Other notes include things like.....I can't think of many complaints. Having been around so many dang Min-Maxers for so long I tried to break the game at creation several times and found myself head off every single time. A fifth complaint about many RPGs, not just RPGs based on licensed properties is that they aren't tested enough (As a former Game Tester myself, I consider this a personal bias.) and a few loop holes fall through the cracks. I thought, "I'll just take multiple Items of Power and get a load of discounts" only to read that I had been head off.

Bravo..... ;D

OMG LOVE!

We only ordered the Your Story for now (everyone in the group pitching in $10 so we can easily afford), but I'm seriously buggin' the hubster to order Our World too.  want, Crave, NEED!  (Like I will give up getting a new phone in order to get the book now)

For someone who has never actually read an RPG manual before (I know, I know.  Typically hubby or BIL just made the character for me or told me what to add), it's very easy to understand and follow.  The comments from Billy, Harry and Bob are fantastically hilarious.  I have a character I write and have for a while that I think I will be able to easily turn into a PC for this.  I'm super excited and we're gonna give it a go this Friday.

I've decided to be cruel to my son, who graduates from HS this May.

I'm *not* going to give him the books as a graduation present.

He'll have to wait until November, for his birthday. :o

I'm just gonna chime in and agree that the books are spectacularly awesome, I almost couldn't be happier. The only thing I haven't been completely satisfied with (only about 85% satisfied) is the character stats for some individual characters (I think Marcone should have Fair Fists and Great Weapons, just for example), and I've literally never been satisfied with character stats in an RPG, the fact that these have come close is phenomenal.

Really, you guys have gone above and beyond.  I've never read a manual before because I just got so lost.  This one I get and I love it.  I'll be up way too late tonight reading.

As a long time MAGE fan, I did not know if this game would unseat the WoD as my go to game for modern sorcery/urban fantasy. Considering what I saw with SotC, I just thought it would be good to mine for ideas.

Just after reading the magic section, I came to realize THIS is the magic system I was looki g for all along.

Congrats on hitting the homer. You most likely made a hardcore WoD fan drop his d10s for Fudge dice.

So far I really like the marginalia, it really makes the text faster reading and draws attention to important parts well. So far I've mostly read the core FATE stuff but I think that this version does a better job of explaining the basic concepts than SotC does.

Addenda to earlier response:

These books are as much the page-turners as Jim Butcher's original novels. Every example, every new term, every new mechanic doesn't make the rules more complicated, but more flexible and I keep wanting more.

The presentation is unbelievable. I knew the entire book was presented as being "in-Dresdenverse" but I didn't realize how well done it was until I found myself reading material so I could read the side notes. This is the first book that I don't want to skim.

Good job, Guys!

OK, I've only been able to great through the first 20-odd pages, but I'm loving it! The graphics are great, and the notes keep making me laugh - my wife was wondering what was going on last night, with all the giggles.

I like that the notes are in three different styles, which makes keeping track of some of the threads fun. ;D

If I didn't have to go to work, or help my wife with chores, I would have been finished reading by now. However, both activities help me buy more stuff, like new RPGs and novels about some wizard in Chicago.

Very nice.  I concur with everyone that said it's just plain fun to read.  Stayed up way too late reading it.  I absolutely love the "voice" of the writing.

Went through "Your World" this morning deleting the "stained notebook" background from all the pages before printing to save ink.  Printed it in 13 folios of 8 folded legal pages each, worked out perfectly.

Now after drawing on a few d6s a la this page: http://www.fudgefactor.org/2001/12/01/babys_first_fudge_dice.html (http://www.fudgefactor.org/2001/12/01/babys_first_fudge_dice.html), all I need is to lure in some unsuspecting friends to get this party started.

Some 3-4 years ago, when I was browsing the web for FATE stuff, I found the Dresden Files site.
I was a bit excited by this, because I love FATE and urban fantasy.

When I read in January that the RPG would be published in June 2010, I started reading the novels. I finished all 11 of them in 6 weeks. At first, I was reading 3 a week, and slowed down later on to one novel a week. First this was intended to be a "research excercise" for playing the game, but the novels are page-turners.

Now, I finally have the PDF on my computer and my iPhone. I keep switching between the two devices to just keep on reading at every opportunity. I've read a lot of RPG rulebooks since 1987. I am deeply impressed by the quality of the writing. It is a joy to read and not a chore, like so many other rulebooks.

DFRPG did two things: finally get into the Dresdenverse, and introduce me to an elegantly written, well thought-out game system.

Great job!

You can use applications like Good Reader (.99) and a wireless network to move .pdf files onto your iPhone or iPod touch (yay for reading at work!).  The .pdf scales perfectly with this application so other than having to move it around more due to screen size limitations, it's just like reading it on your computer.

Exactly like SoulCatcher says. I use GoodReader for this. There is also a free version that you can try out before buying.
But I am very happy with GoodReader. I even consider not do a print-out of the book(s) because of this.

as i said on the DFRPG's homepage, the PDFs are awesome.

i played a lot of games (since the 1980s) but there was never a FATE game, but the rules are very easy and logical, i really love the aspect system.

the presentation is great, what you have done with the backstories, the comments between harry, bob and billy - just great.

can't wait to begin playing...

I can't say much for the Changes spoilers but some of the things I've read in the margins have me cocking my head a little.

I just sent out a company wide email to get people interested in starting a campaign! I really don't want to GM, but I have very little choice. Besides, I think it will be more fun to create a world with 4-5 other people, instead of trying to make the whole damn thing myself.

Greetings

My copy of the pdfs arrived from Leisure Games today on a CD.  Excellent service and excellent content.
I've read the first couple of chapters so far and am very impressed as mch by the style as by the content.

The two books will probably rank as my most expensive single RPG purchase but I am well content on the evidence of the pdfs.

We're gonna give character creation with DV virgins, who are also new to giving their characters a background and some kind of initial relationship to the others, a go tomorrow night.

Of the 8 of us 4 have read the books, 2 of us(who've read the books) have backgrounds already working for our characters and a total of 3 of us know what we want to play.

We'll let you know how it goes.  We're all excited.  And pretty sure we'll be adding Vol 2 to our order...

I pre-ordered last night and downloaded the PDFs.  These are great.  I particularly like the second book with the character stats.   It could also be useful as a convenient companion book for the novels themselves  (At least up through Small Favor) and the game can be modified for online text based role playing games (which I do often).

The Harry / Billy / Bob commentary is great.  The illustrations are fantastic.  I love them.

The one flaw I see is in the bio / stats for Lea it hints that she might be in love and that's why her kiss burned Thomas.  I thought this had been debunked here on the forums or am I mistaken?   Also in the bio itself it says that she's in love or someone's in love with her. I thought it had to be both ways for it to burn Thomas?

No but seriously these books are amazing. The only problems I have with it are the fact that I won't be able to play right away and that everytime I open the pdfs I get another idea for a character I MUST play. and yet I cannot stop reading, tis a vicious cycle.

Greetings from Germany :).

I've become a big FATE and Evil Hat fan over the last year or so, but even considering the already high Evil Hat standards this game is impressive. I really love the new write-up for social conflicts, the city creation sounds awesome and even that I had no idea what the Dresden Files were before, I had to find out that they are the heck of an RPG setting :) (and actually the game made me order Storm Front ;D).

The only part where I felt a little bit left alone are the rules for fallout (p. 257). Love the concept (and the take on magic in general), but I guess could need a few more guidelines / examples there.. but maybe that's just me^^.

Can't wait to try this one out^^. Hopefully I won't neglect my SotC Campain too much because of it :D..

Well, there's also how my reading the pdf on my Palm does horrible things, but that isn't the books fault.

Still, Your World is so much fun even for just reading. Can't wait to get the hard copy and pull together my friends for a game!

If the fact that I've been inundated with requests to join the play-by-post game I started this morning, are any indication, people are loving this game.
