Title: Possibility for active chat on Forums
Post by: Sorryman105 on April 26, 2008, 12:11:05 AM
It was suggested in the forums that we might start up an active chat feature for the forums. I'm not sure if this would actually crash the forums or is even possible but any consideration for it?

I have no idea what it is. But if you're talking about something like AOL instant messenger... I would suggest using AOL instant messenger. :)

I'm not entirely sure, either, but I imagine what they have in mind is kind of like IM, but through the site.  Many businesses will block IM, but not the website, so people were talking about a kind of real time chat feature hosted by you.  I'm not a programmer, so I'm not sure how you'd even do it, but personally don't see how it would be feasible.  Y'all have enough going on.

Are we talking like, a javascript chat room? Dunno if that would be easy to implement or not.

If someone can find a free, not-hosted-on-this-site chat service that does these things, I'll happily *link* to it from here, but I think that's about as far as we can go with our current server solution.

Looking into it, I'll get back to you. a quick google search turned this up: http://www.freejavachat.com/

I created and uploaded this to my webspace, it's Java based IRC, all my website does is hold the code which runs off freejavachat.com's servers. It's the closest thing to free IRC I can find, and doesn't require you to download a IRC client, just to be able to open this webpage and have Java Running.

Give it a shot, if it works and you like it, bookmark it. :)

That doesn't look right, John. For one thing, there's no place to register. Take a look.

You should not need to register. Just type the nickname you want in the box and press connect. That's all i did and it took me right into the room. If it gives you an error about not being registered or something, let me know.

Nope, it works after all. The registering thing threw me. There's no place to register.

But I'm in now. Coolage!

Well that sucks, I figured the Javascript would overrule that, but i guess not.

There may be no solution for people who surf while they're at work. :-/

And for those of us who already use an irc client, what is the channel you have set up named?

Also, is the server ircstorm.net?

---EDIT---

Answered my own questions here.
For the IRC users out there:  IRC://irc.ircstorm.net:6667   channel: #jimbutcheronline

If anyone is interested in using an IRC client to get there, let me know and I can set up an FAQ or something somewheres on the use of IRC.
