Title: Apprentice spoilers and thoughts.
Post by: edf on January 22, 2026, 09:40:27 PM
Eb mentioned that he's had 3 dozen apprentices.  Doesn't it seem odd that none of them have stepped up to help out in any way?  Perhaps some were on the strike force to save Maggie, but none have shown any solidarity to Harry.  You'd think that Eb would have socialized him with what would presumably be his allies.

It is odd. Another one of the so many weird things in this book.

We don't know how many of them survived and how many of them are loyal to the Council. As far as we know, Justin could have been one of those apprentices. We simply do not have enough information.

Justin's master was Simon.  That much, at least, was mentioned in Summer Knight.

The rest, though, yeah, you're right, there's not much grounds to speculate on.  Given the skill set Ebenezar would be the ideal teacher for, I'd guess quite a few of them probably wound up in the old guard of the Wardens and/or the 'brute squad' at Archangel, so I can buy most of them being dead by the story era.  But out of a pool that large, there pretty much have to be some still alive somewhere.

Likely a few on the grey council, which would explain Eb compartmentalizing Harry from even meeting them outside of that content - better operational security if he doesn't know them at all.

Ebenezer saying he has had 3 dozen apprentices is explained by his time as the Chief of the Wardens. A wizard goes through regular apprenticeship, decides to become a Warden, then get shipped off to Eb for a year or two of OJT. We know that Wardens get trained by the Chief of the Wardens per White Knight. Eb probably spent decades, or even a century, as a veteran Warden so he had plenty of time to do it even if he did it one at a time. It even explains why Harry was allowed to become a Warden without any official training. He spent years with Eb, he's a licensed PI, and has clear success performing the job of a Warden so he's got a GED in Warden training.

Thank you both, I had forgotten the details.

Harry was pretty untrusted by the wardens most of his life, and he didn't trust any of them until much later in the series.  It seems like Eb would have socialized him among his warden allies to reduce the chance he'd be beheaded.
