I'm about to do a big wiki (http://dfrpg-resources.wikispaces.com/) edit.
I'd appreciate help, if anyone here wants to participate.
And if anyone has any specific suggestions for edits, I'd like to hear them.
So, wanna edit the wiki?
And do you have any ideas about what could make the wiki more useful?
-
I won't mind helping you out. I've been disappointed in the wiki myself.
-
You Got my help if you want it.
-
Awesome. There's a lot to do, it'll be great to have some help.
I just created a Sponsored Magic page. I also revised the Power and Item of Power pages. It was time-consuming and unpleasant, but it's done now and I feel good about that.
Part of the plan is for each Power to have its own page. That way we'll be able to attach tags to Powers, making it much easier to search the list.
Could you guys start making pages for Powers?
It's not difficult, but it takes time...like everything to do with the wiki.
Here's what you do:
-Highlight a Power.
-Copy it.
-Turn the Power's name into a link to a non-existent wiki page named after the Power.
-Follow that link.
-Click the edit button for the empty page.
-Paste the Power.
-Save your edits.
And then keep doing that until you've done it for every Power.
I'd rather not do that all myself, since it's a lengthy and repetitive task, so I'd really appreciate help.
EDIT: Just so you know, it's possible that the Power page will lag horribly. If it's a major issue, maybe we'll have to split the Power page into a bunch of different pages. Let me know if you run into any lag issues.

In other news, I have a new front page planned. Here's what I have in mind for its text:
Welcome to the Dresden Files Role Playing Game Resources Wiki!
This Wiki is intended to organize, store and present fan-made material for the Dresden Files RPG.
Introduction To The Dresden RPG: A spoiler-free introduction to the RPG.
Aspects: A compiled list of Aspects, sorted by type.
Characters: A list of characters that ranges from the serious to the absurd. Useful for both PC and NPC inspiration.
Downloads: DFRPG-related things that you can download.
Examples: Example combats. Example ward building. Example item crafting. Includes both actual play and examples designed for teaching newbies.
House Rules: Rules changes and player-designed sub-systems for handling all sorts of things.
Powers: Phenomenal Custom Powers! (Itty Bitty Refresh!)
Stunts: "The rules are more like guidelines, anyway."
Templates: Player-made templates to supplement those found in Your Story.
Travel Guide: A guide to the Cities and Locations of Earth and the Nevernever.
Those categories would be used for the navigation bar as well.
Does that sound like a plan to you?
-
One of the things that always bugged me about the wiki was the Aspect pages. They seem like kind of a waste of space, maybe others feel differently, but I've just never found them useful. There's no story or reasoning behind them and they lack examples of invokes and compels so they just become these bland lists.
-
Maybe you (or someone else) could go through and add some Invoke and Compel examples for each Aspect, then. Or at least for some of them.
I'm not too keen on doing that myself, but I think it'd be a worthy endeavour.
-
Mostly I'd probably just end up deleting the lists...
-
Please don't do that.
You don't have to look at the Aspect lists. You don't even have to acknowledge their existence. Just leave them there for the people who like them.
-
Yeah, I know.
-
If it helps, you can think of them as aids for the unimaginative, or the impatient.
-
Just a note I'll start on the Spellcraft Powers now. When I finish I'll announce the next.
Also, can we have a codified lexicon of what tags we want to use for the powers, since the current list of tags is more inclined towards characters? Right now, for the Hunger Magic power, I've got Vampirism, Spellcraft, Custom Power. Any others I should have added?
Edit: Also, should we try to make a custom power template as well? They pretty much have a template already, but it might be useful for others to add to the wiki.
Edit2: Also used the House Rules tag for Magical Healing since it gives an alternate way of doing it that differs from what the RAW suggests. Do you think this is appropriate, or is it redundant with the Custom Power tag?
Edit3: Any idea what tag to differentiate those Powers that give Refresh rebates from the rest? Right now I'm using Positive Refresh Power but that feels rather weird.
-
I'm currently working on the Stunts page, but I should be done within a day or two. I'll get to the individual Power pages then.

If you know the creator of the Power, it's probably worth putting a Creator: Name tag in there. (KOFFEYKID wrote Hunger Magic).
Maybe also a cost tag? Like -1 Power, -3 Power, and so on.
Some kind of "seal of quality" tag might be good too. Feel free to tag Powers that you think are good enough to use with "Locnil-Approved" or something.
Edit: Also, should we try to make a custom power template as well? They pretty much have a template already, but it might be useful for others to add to the wiki.
I don't think we need a template, since pretty much everything is copy-pasted from the forum. Don't know if a Power has ever hit the wiki without being posted to the forum first.
Incidentally, what's up with the line breaks between the trapping names and the trapping effects?

Seems redundant to me, but it's your call.
Edit3: Any idea what tag to differentiate those Powers that give Refresh rebates from the rest? Right now I'm using Positive Refresh Power but that feels rather weird.
I usually call them Rebate Powers.

Credit where credit is due, I suppose.
Good idea.
Nah, seems a bit too much. I might add a "Possibly Over/Underpowered tag for Powers that struck me as such, though.
Well, if we're trying to revamp the wiki anyway...
Not sure what you mean.
I think I'll just use it for Powers that explicitly contradict the rules - as in, it replaces the guidelines or whatever.
Good name.
-
Stunt list update is mostly ready. I'll be updating the stunt page tomorrow unless somebody points out something wrong with the stunts I've prepared.
Not sure what you mean.
Here's Rote Reliance from the page you set up for it:
Rote Reliance [+1]
Musts: At least one rote spell.
Description: You aren’t very good at improving with your magic, preferring to stick to a few well rehearsed and known spells.
Skills Affected: Conviction, Discipline, Lore
Effects
Improvisational Block
You suck at casting any spell you haven’t worked out ahead of time. When casting non rote spells, consider your Conviction and Discipline to be 2 steps lower than the actual ratings.
Total Reliance [+1]
You are totally reliant upon a few well rehearsed spells. The only spells you can cast are rote spells. When casting such spells you must roll to control the power as if you were casting them normally.
And here's Rote Reliance on the main page:

You seem to be using a slightly altered format...I'm not complaining here, but I want to make sure we're formatting Powers the same way for consistency's sake.
I was planning to copy directly from the Power page with no edits, but I can go with your reformatting if it increases readability or something.
So...what kind of reformatting are you doing, exactly?
-
Finished the Stunt section. Will get back to Powers tomorrow.
-
Okay, the Powers page is just too damn laggy. Seems either Wikispaces or my laptop can't handle a page that big.
I'm splitting it up into category pages.
-
Finished splitting up the Powers page.
-
Turned every Power name into a link to a page for the Power. Most of those pages are still empty, though.
Anyway, I'd like to revise the front page and navigation bar tomorrow or the next day. Here's what I have planned for the front page:
Welcome to the Dresden Files Role Playing Game Resources Wiki!
This Wiki is intended to organize, store and present fan-made material for the Dresden Files RPG.
Introduction To The Dresden RPG: A spoiler-free introduction to the RPG.

The categories on the front page would also be used for the navigation bar.
Does that sound like a good plan to everyone?
Is there anything on the list that you think doesn't belong? Is there anything missing?
-
Front page looks good. Also:

I was planning to copy directly from the Power page with no edits, but I can go with your reformatting if it increases readability or something.
So...what kind of reformatting are you doing, exactly?
Just a basic reformatting, bolding the headers of the parts of the Power, using italics to separate the name of the effects form the mechanical effects. Bolding optional add-ons which may or may not cause Refresh. Line breaks to split up the text, make it easier to digest each bit while separating distinct points from another.
Hpwever, there should be no problem with direct copying. I just altered it a bit to make it more readable, I suppose. It's one of the quirks I have.
-
Just to clarify - once the Powers are all properly put into their own subpage, are you still going to leave the write-ups in the categories page, or will you replace them with a brief description of the effects? Or something else entirely?
-
Ok, made some progress on updating the Spellcraft Powers. Added some new tags for reference - Mental Stress, Sponsor. Should be self-explanatory.
Also, Sanctaphrax, something I need to point out. In cases where two Powers have the same name, you might want to name them Power and Power (Alternate Version), like I do, or something. Currently, you name them the same - with the end result that both link to the same page, so when one is updated the other version is lost.
Edit: On a related note, the first Minor Magic entry should now link to http://dfrpg-resources.wikispaces.com/Minor+Magic+%28Alternate+Version%29, so could you edit the hyperlink? Thanks.
-
Okay, the Powers page is just too damn laggy. Seems either Wikispaces or my laptop can't handle a page that big.
Oh, and I'm afraid it's probably your laptop.
-
Front page edit will be delayed because I have a lot to do right now and it's not at all urgent.

Hm, okay.
Dunno if I like the bolding of optional add-ons, but the rest sounds good to me.
Oh, and I'm afraid it's probably your laptop.
Huh.
Well, it's not an issue anymore since I split the page up. So I suppose it doesn't matter. But thanks for letting me know.
Just to clarify - once the Powers are all properly put into their own subpage, are you still going to leave the write-ups in the categories page, or will you replace them with a brief description of the effects? Or something else entirely?
I'll be leaving them in the category pages. A bit of redundancy harms no one.

I did that on purpose for Reality Marble. If you notice that anywhere else, it's a mistake.
I'll fix the Minor Magic link.

I modified Tengu Magic's Evocation choices to include a "strange fireballs" option to be used as I'd read about Tengu burning down various Buddhist temples and that they could cast "strange" fireballs so it seemed to fit. I'm treating it as a Spirit Evocation with Photomancy options mixed-in personally. I though you should know, since you're in charge of the site's updating project. It would look something like this:
Evocation: Tengu Magic evocations take the form of various ninjutsu involving veils, powerful gusts of wind, and strange fireballs. The fireball will burn objects like a normal flame but it is treated as a usage of Photomancy for doing so.
-
I'll post that the Sponsored Magic list thread, and when I next update the Sponsored Magic list it'll get added to both list and wiki.
But first...what does "it is treated as a usage of Photomancy for doing so" mean?
-
Done:
Updated the main page. Included the planned categories plus another new one called Magic, for spells and enchanted items and things like that.
Updated the Templates page to include way more Templates.
Created a Downloads page.
Reformatted the Aspects page slightly.
To do:
Finish individual Power pages.
Create individual Template pages.
Revise tag system.
Create FAQ.
Add more stuff to the Travel Guide.
Create Magic page with organized sub-pages.
Create House Rules page.
Create Examples page.
Get the various character pages organized.
Add more characters to wiki.

Never mind. I was looking through the thematic Thaumaturgy section and saw that Photomancy has a tendency to be used as fire evocations and though I'd try and work that in there somehow.
-
Okay.
I'll add the version of Tengu Magic from the wiki to the Sponsored Magic list next time I update.
In other news, I wrote up a FAQ (http://dfrpg-resources.wikispaces.com/FAQ). Please read it. If there's something missing or something wrong, either edit the page or tell me about the problem.

Took care of the Magic page and its sub-pages.
Left some spells out, though, so if you're looking for something to do feel free to add more spells to the wiki.
Still looking for comments on the FAQ (http://dfrpg-resources.wikispaces.com/FAQ)...reposting the link because I think this post will start a new page and I don't want people to miss it.

Made a House Rules page. It contains a bunch of broken links, but all but one of them are to Power pages. So those'll get fixed when we finish making the individual Power pages.
The other broken link is to the Chase Rules page. Wasn't sure what to put there, since the chase rules are admiralducksauce's thing, so I PMed the admiral.

Finished making Power pages.
Didn't do much formatting and I didn't bother with tags, though, so there's still plenty of work left to do.
To do:
Create individual Template pages.
Revise tag system and apply the new tags.
Get the various character pages organized.
Add more characters to wiki.

Finally finished making Template pages. It was a lengthy and unpleasant task, and I now feel a great sense of personal grievance towards anyone who has written a Template.
On the bright side, I'm in the home stretch of this wiki update.
To do:
Revise tag system and apply the new tags.
Get the various character pages organized.
Add more characters to wiki.
-
Made a Characters page, deleted the old character pages.
Only two tasks left. Unfortunately they're both really big.
I could really use some help with tagging pages and copying characters onto the wiki.
To do:
Revise tag system and apply the new tags.
Add more characters to wiki.
-
Revised the tag system and applied the new tags to the wiki. (Mostly. Pretty sure I missed at least a couple of things.)
It was a big job, but I found some workarounds in the wiki software that made it easier.
Almost done...
To do:
Add more characters to wiki.
-
Fixed every broken link on the Character page and moved Deadmanwalking's animals onto the wiki.
Not done adding characters, though.
Help, as always, would be appreciated.
-
Added some Worm (http://parahumans.wordpress.com/) characters.
Also posted a thread to RPGnet, which brought in a whole pile of views.
