Title: How would you make psychokinetics in DFRPG?
Post by: Conor on April 02, 2013, 07:09:41 PM
Hi folks,

I was talking to someone who was interested in doing a psychics campaign using DFRPG rules, with the psychics themselves being mostly divided into telepaths and telekinetics/psychokinetics.

(Nobody ever uses 'psycho' instead of 'tele' for telepath, huh. Anyway)

The movie Chronicle http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1706593/ (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1706593/) is a good example of what he's interested in for the kinetics, thinking probably 7 refresh characters.

Does anyone have any suggestions about what might be a nice way to build that?

Cheers!

Channeling (Spirit) is probably the way I'd do it.

Though in a MMX game, one player had a psychokinetics power that let them do physical maneuvers using the game's equivalent to the Conviction score.

Psycho Mantis did. ... Granted, he's the only one I can think of, but still.

This. For the most part, anyway.

Channeling (Spirit) is a good way to go with the kinetic side of things that are shown in the movie (the talent show, teeth pulling, launching people/things, etc).

At the same token, you could also claim that any power the character takes, such as Wings (for the Flight side of the film) or even a modified Thaumaturgy/Evocation (weather changes and lightning bolts), are "powered" by the psychokinesis that the character acquired.

As far as I can tell, the powers are already there and anything could work; you might just have to change the "flavour" of it to fit the setting.

Yeah, we did a super-quick playtest using Channelling and it actually seemed to work fairly well.

And sorry Mr Death, I was making a play on words that if you used psycho like in psychokinetic for telepath, you'd get psychopath.

Thanks for the responses guys!

Channelling (Spirit) could work, but it has some baggage that might not be appropriate. Do you envision psychics using focus items and veils?

So I personally would use the Telepathy and Telekinesis custom Powers. They're on the list (https://www.dropbox.com/s/eclun6icxi51vk7/Custom%20Powers%20Master%20List%20%28V3%29.odt?dl=0), and if you head over to the Generic NPC thread you can see my take on some psychics.

EDIT: Scratch what I said about the list; it's not up-to-date. Telepathy and Telekinesis:
