Title: Kronos Sponsored Magic.
Post by: Lavecki121 on February 12, 2013, 07:56:19 PM
Just wanted a little help stating this out I assume it would look like this but just wanted some oppinions:

TIME MANIPULATION [-4]
Description: This is power granted from Kronos.
Sponsor: Kronos is the God of Time, as such he grants his scions the ability to move freely throughout time within reason.
Agenda: Kronos works to keep the timestream in working order. He uses scions who have the ability to travel along the timestream to stop annomolies from occuring.
Evocation: Evocations cast with time manipulation have the ability to distort time in a small area around the user or close to the user (speeding up or slowing down time).
Thaumaturgy: Rituals cast with time manipulation have the ability to open direct portals between time, effectively bending the timestream to meet in a certain point.
Evothaum: All rituals that may be cast with time manipulation may be cast with Evocation's speed and methods.
Extra Benefits: Characters with time manipulation have the ability to see time annomolies and can know if their own actions will have adverse affects on time. With this knowledge they are allowed to take trinkets outside of their own timestream if they would have no longer been missed by that era. ie: books from alexandria before it burned, art from dresden before the blitzkrieg.

I feel like a magic like this (which very use breaks the 6th law) needs to have that addressed. Do you gain lawbreaker on ever trip? For using the Evocation? This is the sort of thing that gets you killed in a right hurry if a Warden catches wind.

Well, it seems to only work for Scions of Kronos, who may or may not be under the juridiction. Coupled with the fact that it's apparently difficult to discern whether or not a chronomancer even exists, they're probably fine.

Also, are you aware that the scions of Kronos, are, canonically speaking, the Olympian pantheon?

I'd phrase the extra benefit as a Supernatural Sense, personally.

Not sure how the Evocation is supposed to work. It doesn't seem to include the standard suite of evocation effects.

What does it mean to open portals between time?

Might be appropriate to make this provide immunity to Lawbreaker. Wouldn't have to cost anything extra.

If you don't mind I'll clean this up a bit and add it to the list.

That would be great.

How's this?

TIME MANIPULATION [-4]
Description: This is power granted by Kronos, the God of Time.
Sponsor: Kronos, the God of Time, who grants his scions the ability to move freely throughout time (within reason).
Agenda: Kronos works to keep the timestream in working order. He uses scions who have the ability to travel along the timestream to prevent temporal anomalies from occurring.
Evocation: Time Manipulation evocations work by slowing down and speeding up the flow of time. This provides the normal set of Evocation effects, but with some funky desciptions; attacks might work by causing time to flow unevenly across the target's body while blocks might work by creating narrow slices of space where time barely moves.
Thaumaturgy: Time Manipulation rituals manipulate time. Straightforward time travel is their most obvious application, but not their only one.
Evothaum: All rituals that may be cast with Time Manipulation may be cast with Evocation's speed and methods.
Extra Benefits: Characters with Time Manipulation have a Lore-based Supernatural Sense for temporal anomalies. It can be used to detect disruptions to the timestream and to determine whether an action will cause such a disruption to occur. Some scions of Kronos use this ability to collect souvenirs from the past without changing history.

If it meets your approval, I'll update the list with it later today.

It looks a lot clearer in its wording, to me, than previous versions, while retaining the same essential effects.

You're very welcome.

And thank you for contributing to the list.

Actually, if you limit the power to only speeding up or slowing down time in local pockets, and recognizing temporal anomalies (which I like...), it shouldn't violate the Law at all. That kind of thing is even specifically called out in the RAW, so it seems like it should be fine. Unless they are specifically traveling forward or (more importantly to me) back in Time, I don't see the issue.

I would treat evocation as instantaneous decay, or reversal into a fetus, or just erase them from time.

I still see no issue with forward, since the law says only against.

I would treat evocation as instantaneous decay, or reversal into a fetus, or just erase them from time.

The first one at least. I think the others may have some issues, as i think they violate laws

Instantaneous decay works, but really you can make it even simpler.  Just take a page from the Time Monks of Terry Pratchett and keep their head locked in temporal space for about a millisecond.  Rotation of the earth will take it right off.  Of course this works on any object and can do damage pretty much precisely wherever you want...

So even without really fancy narrative you have a potential attack that can do all kinds of damage.

I think that still hits the first law though...

Oh yeah, definitely, if you use it on people.

I tend to come up with ideas first, worrying about whether or not it breaks the Laws is for other people.

I keep forgetting that the laws only apply to humans lol
