Here's the deal:
I'm planning on joining a game that is supposed to start in late July/early August. Currently I have two character ideas though only one is relevant to the thread. The idea in question is a young Tibetan Monk on a journey of discovery who is stuck with a Temple Dog companion after it snuck away from the monastery to follow him. I know it is a very powerful "pet", that is the problem. How can it be handled aside from being outright ignored without it unbalancing things a little?
Someone suggested playing the Temple Dog with the Monk being the "pet" and while amusing I don't think that will fly.

Treat it as an Item of Power and go from there.
-
Or stat up the Temple Dog and treat the monk as an IoP that allows him to talk.
-
There are some half finished rules on here (http://www.jimbutcheronline.com/bb/index.php/topic,30475.0.html) for Companions and Minions that might be helpful in working something out.

Ah, thank you. I somehow didn't get that thread to come up in my searches earlier. I'll give it a look over.

You could ask the GM if it would be ok to give you an npc on your side. He would create the temple dog as a full character and just let him tag along with the rest of you. You would not get to control him directly, but I think that would be the most interesting way to do it, I think.

Actually...that's a pretty good way to do it. Give the monk a relevant aspect that he can invoke/compel to bring the dog into things occasionally. And it saves a crapload of messing around building the dog yourself.

I agree... pc the dog and make up the monk as the pet!
You sure got that feeling from Mouse about Dresden at times. But it does pose a question, what about the temple cats?

If you get a chance to look at Spirit of the Century and Spirit of the Season, there are some interesting FATE rules there for minons, pets, and sidekicks.

If anyone cares to help, I'm up for finishing the pet/ally rules in the linked thread.
But I lack the motivation to do it alone.

Pets and Immunity sound like fun projects to help finish to me.
I look forward to butting heads with you until we work out workable solutions ;D ;)

I'll step in from time to time. I'm already dealing with reworking "pets"/cohorts for my High Fantasy FATE conversion, and I've read the rules in SotC and Kerberous Club FATE. I can offer some ideas.
