Title: Writing Influences
Post by: jeno on February 20, 2011, 02:08:53 AM
What authors have had the most impact on you? Whose writing do you drool over? Is it for technical/language reasons, or for characterization or plot or storytelling?

Gerrald Durrell for his command of the language and ability to make me laugh.
JB for creating compelling, believeable characters and his mastery of snark.
James Schmitz for creating wondrous worlds filled with decided characters and doing excellent female characters.

I've gone back and started reading Hemmingway's short stories again--more for his mastery of the language than his rosy outlook on life and true love.

I'm starting to look for masters to study under for my next two reading projects: character development and world building.

Jim, obviously.

Also Trudi Canavan for her Black Magician Trilogy.

Dean Koontz, in particular Cold Fire.

Christopher Pike, his books framed my teenage years.
