Title: DFRPG The Musical
Post by: Grogtard on September 23, 2010, 02:12:43 PM
Once again along time between posts here. But a crazy idea hit me last night. Go ahead build your characters and NPC's but here's the catch you can only use song titles for your Aspects.
Enjoy!

I used "Enter Sandman" as my Trouble for a Somnimancer (Sleep/dream focused Practitioner).

Read/listen to the lyrics of that song and tell me it doesn't describe some baddie in the Never Never.

Not just song titles... but song titles from ONE BAND - to tie it all together, y'know. Or one soundtrack. Extra refresh to anyone who pulls it off in awesome fashion!

Here's one made entirely from songs that were at least performed by the Beach Boys

Name: Peggy Sue

High Concept: Child of Winter  (she's a Changeling of the Winter Court)
Trouble: I Just Wasn't Made for These Times  (as a woman well past her prime, high technology -- like pushbutton phones, for example -- often eludes her comprehension)

Little Old Lady From Pasadena  (she's elderly now, having put off The Choice for nearly a lifetime; she also knows her town like nobody else)
Help me, Rhonda!  (he best friend, who's stood by her since childhood)
Little Deuce Coupe  (her car is quite a lot more than it seems at first glance)
Still I Dream of It  (Cassandra's Tears)
Strange Things Happen  (she has the oddest luck sometimes -- good, bad, or ... other?)

Red Court Infected inspired by Meatloaf.

High Concept: Bat out of hell.

 Trouble: Dead ringer for love.

Other aspects: Two out of three aint bad.
                        Wasted youth.
                        For crying out loud.
                        Life is a lemon.

Archibald "Archie" Walls (True Believer)
Inspired by Drowning Pool

High Concept: The Man Without Fear
Trouble Aspect: Sinner
Other Aspects: Love and War, Children of the Gun, Enemy, Reborn, 37 Stitches

Explanation: He was once a sergeant in the US military. Fought in the first invasion of Iraq, doing some rather terrible things at the order of a Denarian officer. Eventually, the chaplain of his unit led a mutiny against the Denarian. The chaplain died, but the rest of the soldiers were able to escape. They ended up at the Vatican, becoming foot soldiers in the war against the Denarians. Archie distinguished himself through his incredible courage and desire for redemption. Unfortunately, the Denarian officer has tracked down his former subordinates and is murdering them systematically.

Albia Tullius (Emissary of Power)
Inspired by Nightcore

High Concept: Forever Gamer
Trouble Aspect: Crazy Baby
Other Aspects: 21 Century Digital Girl, Forever Young, Temple of Dreams, Pretty Rave Girl, All or Nothing

Explanation: Born the year after the death of Christ, Albia grew up as a noble in ancient Rome. Her abiding passion was (and is) games of all kinds, especially those where money could be lost and won. She was so successful at gambling that she attracted the attention of Sors, ancient roman god of luck. He challenged her to bet upon the flip of a coin. If she won, she would be granted eternal youth and the patronage of Sors. If she lost, her body and soul would be torn apart. She gambled and won. And so she lived, blissfully free of maturity and responsibility, for two millennia. Until about a year ago. She got pregnant, gave birth, and suddenly had a lot more responsibility than she ever wanted. Albia currently lives with her baby in a luxurious suite in the Temple of Dreams hotel/casino.

If you would like me to explain the meaning of a specific aspect, just ask.

Inspired by of all the damned things, to the Soundtrack of Tenchi Muyo in Love! by Christopher Franke .

High Concept: Operative A

Trouble: The Rhythm of Cause and Effect

Other Aspects:

Come to the Rescue

The Power of Love

Power Booster

The Future House

Kain's Return

I have no idea about a story for this one.
Title: Re: DFRPG The Musical
Post by: Lanir on September 27, 2010, 07:25:48 PM
High Concept: A Little Priest - Sweeney Todd soundtrack
Trouble: Sympathy for the Devil - Rolling Stones
Background: Damaged - Blue Oyster Cult
Rising Conflict: Rocket Queen - Guns 'n Roses
The Story: Behind Blue Eyes - The Who
Guest Star: Get Right With Me - Depeche Mode
Guest Star Redux: On the Rise - Dr. Horrible's Sing-Along Blog

Not sure they all fit the particular character creation step they're in but you get the idea. Most of the song lyrics would apply as well. Your basic corrupt churchman. Sadly it doesn't take supernatural power to do this so it's up to you if he's a front man for some Big Bad or if he's just a sick little monkey swinging out there alone.

Band: Metallica

High Concept: Symphony of Destruction
Trouble: The Thing that Should Not Be

Other Aspects:
Disposable Heroes
Damage, Inc.
My Apocalypse
Am I Evil?
Hero of the Day

Submerged Power Level. Warrior/monster/wizard/mercenary thing-dude?
Whatever it is, it would probably be fun to play in a darker leaning, personal horror oriented game.

Could you fine fellows please explain:

The trouble aspect of Crimson Overcoat's character?

The trouble aspect of Lanir's character?

Everything about Lanodantheon's most recent character?

Sir Oswell (Mortal w/Items of Power)
Inspired by Hammerfall

High Concept: Knights Of The 21st Cenutry
Trouble Aspect: On The Edge Of Honour
Other Aspects:  Stronger Than All, Hammer of Justice, Legacy of Kings, Any Means Necessary, A Legend Reborn

Explanation: Sir Oswell, king and champion of a great land, died almost a thousand years ago. His spirit endures through his weapons and armour. Recently, he was able to acquire a body after his great-something grandson was born without a soul. He moved into the baby’s body and began his quest to prove himself a mighty and honourable knight once again. The mighty part is going great, but he’s having some trouble with the honourable part. The 21st century has no place for someone like him, and he has been forced into a number of unpleasant compromises.

I really want to make a character based off of MC Hawking's music, but I can't find a good high concept.

This character brought to you by Billy Joel.

Template: Focused Practitioner
High Concept: Ex-Con Blue Collar Wizard [I chose not to conform to the song lyrics for this one, because the HC is specifically supposed to be related to the Template]
Trouble: Angry Young Man
Background: Uptown Girl
Rising Conflict: An Innocent Man
The Story: Only The Good Die Young
Guest Star 1: Shades of Grey
Guest Star 2: Keeping The Faith

William Joel is a former member of the White Council, stripped of his status after being framed for the (entirely mundane) murder of another wizard--who just happened to be his wife as well. Convicted by the mortal authorities and sentenced to prison, William languished in prison for 25 years, basically never growing a day older because of his Wizard's Constitution. When he was paroled about six months ago, he immediately recovered what magical equipment he had managed to stash before his imprisonment and began rebuilding his magical skills--which is why he's statted at 10 Refresh and not what he would have been before he went to prison. Forgotten and forsaken by the Council, William now works as an antique vehicle mechanic, specializing in old war-era jeeps and motorcycles.

Background: William Joel did not kill his wife. He doesn't know who did, but he's going to find out. Will grew up in Brooklyn during WWII and wasn't found by the White Council until his early teens; when he was finally found, though, he took to spellcasting with a vengeance, often taking unique views vastly different from the more tradition-bound members of the Council. He fell in love with Christie Brinks shortly after his graduation to full-fledged Wizard and they lived happily for a long time.

Rising: William took a trip in 1985 to do some research in the then-Soviet Union on some Czar-era ruins of mystical importance. He took the Ways to get there, and when he returned his wife was dead, killed with one of William's own ritual knives. Mentally destroyed, he called the police--who promptly arrested William for the murder. Because William had used the Ways, there was no travel record of him being gone, and he had no alibi a mortal detective would believe. The White Council investigated and found no evidence that William used magic to kill his wife, so the Merlin left him to the tender mercies of the mortal judicial system. William Joel wouldn't see the outside of prison walls for 25 years.

The Story: Six months after his parole, William works as an antique car and motorcycle mechanic by day and trying to regain his magical expertise by night. When another wizard ends up slain on his doorstep by dark sorcery--using the same knife that killed his wife-- William must re-enter the supernatural community that has forsaken him in order to clear his name before either the mortal police, Warden Harry Dresden, or the actual murderer can put him away for good.

Guest Star 1:
Something involving William having to return to Brooklyn-- and the descendants of the mobsters he grew up alongside-- to get the job done.

Guest Star 2: Something about a crisis of faith, angry with God for all the bad crap that has happened to him. [Building towards taking True Faith powers]

And another character brought to you by Creedence Clearwater Revival.

Template: Were-Form [Alligator]
High Concept: Bad Moon Rising
Trouble: I Put A Spell On You
Background: Born on the Bayou
Rising Action: Mustang Sally
The Story: Run Through the Jungle
Guest Star 1: Heard It Through the Grapevine
Guest Star 2: Tombstone Shadow

Basic concept is African American Louisiana boy gets cursed by voodoo priest into the form of an alligator, but manages to figure out how to control the magic and change back and forth to human form.

Could you fine fellows please explain:

The trouble aspect of Lanir's character?

Based on his other aspects this one is about the character having the appearance of being holy and having to lie to cover up his excesses. Much like the song, he probably has his fingers in all sorts of pies but in his case it's all to cover his own arse. I guess if you really wanted to you could read it as him fitting the Emissary template somewhat by being tied to some dark power. But why blame ancient cosmic evils for things that can adequately be explained by selfishness, poor judgement and an talent for self-delusion? :)

Could you fine fellows please explain:

The trouble aspect of Crimson Overcoat's character?

The idea that I was kicking around for this character was a former soldier, probably Vietnam, that was exposed to some sort of otherworldly something, probably outsider tainted magics that fundamentally changed his being. He became something of a living engine of destruction. Despite his normal appearance, his reputation and his presence combine to creating a general sense of wrongness about him, the leftover touch of whatever outsider taint brushed him. Something deep inside him is pushing him towards an unknown and uncertain goal.

ummmm.... i shall try this....  ???

temp- Alchemist and Divinator, within the bounds of The Laws, of course. A magical con-man... with a past.
HC- Liar
Trouble- After the storm

Other- White Blank Page, Little Lion Man, Thistle and Weeds, Winter Winds

i think thats right..... Band is Mumford and sons, by the way.  :)
and an extra detail on the trouble would be that my man, a fine specimen by the name of Kyle Carmen, was a wizard of the court who worked a day job as a pharmacist, and selling placebo drugs to gullible customers (he's just trying to help ;) ) when he sells the fakes to an angry gang of magical baddies who blow up his life and his cover (shootouts in a CVS for example). he tries to handle things but ends up blowing up their hideout with them still inside. the mortal authorities are now looking for a terrorist. so he joins a circus, working in the sideshow and selling drug- potions on the side, hence the 'after the storm'.

yes?

Everything about Lanodantheon's most recent character?

Okay.....truth be told the character was just made out of the blue using song titles from the Tenchi Muyo in Love! (the first Tenchi Movie) soundtrack by Christopher Franke. I picked the aspects because the titles...sounded like Aspects.

Here's my attempt at a coherent story to explain them:

High Concept: Operative A (A as in Alpha) in game terms an Emissary of Power

The Operative thinks he comes from the Future or more specifically a Possible future, maybe of an entirely different Earth with a different past. He has theories about his identity. He might be an agent from Mnemosyne, the Titaness of Memory or Chronos the personification of Time. He might also be from a Future Blackstaff, trying to maintain the timeline. Whatever his origin, he knows his purpose, to preserve and protect the timeline and the Free Will of humanity.

Trouble: The Rhythm of Cause and Effect

He is not supposed to be in this time, but he is making an impact on it nonetheless. He has vague memories about where things may go if unhindered. When it goes different, it causes ripples in the timeline, ripples he can sense. He can also predict the extreme outcomes of events. But they may be specs of futures that may no longer come to pass.

Phase 1[Where Do You Come From?]:  Come to the Rescue

Alpha remembers nothing of his own past, other than it is not from here, now, in this time. perhaps his memories were removed so that he would be less likely to harm the timeline. Alpha always seems to know where he needs to be to save the day.

He would appear in whatever City the game is set in a few years before the campaign begins as a fully-grown clean slate.

Phase 2[What Shaped You?]: The Power of Love

Alpha found the love of his life, a love he must protect. But time is a funny thing.

Phase 3[First Adventure]: Power Booster

Alpha has a ....Power Booster...thing. I'm not sure what it does in game terms, but it is definitely an Item of Power.

Phase 4[Guest Star]: The Future House

The Future House is Alpha's point of Contact with his sponser. It's a term used for a structure, usually a House that will be in the "Future" or whatever where Alpha's sponsor is.

Phase 5[Also Guest Starring]Kain's Return

All this time, Alpha has awaited and prepared for the return of "Kain" whoever the hell that is. It could be an ally and future plucky side-kick or some Demi-God looking to rip through the fabric of the universe.

That's the best that I can do.

It may sound odd, but when I hear "Father Figure" by George Michael, I think of Harry and Molly. I know she has a father, but since he isn't a wizard, he doesn't really have the capacity to aide in her training. Harry, to her, is an older authority figure, whom she is obviously smitten with, and there is just loads of sexual tension there. Love it.   ;D

Here's the musical treatment for the Hero de Burgh

High Concept: Crusader

Trouble: It's Such a Long Way Home (once you begin the good fight it's hard to leave it)

Other Aspects:
The Girl With April in Her Eyes (his first love)

Old-Fashioned People (The ones who taught him and set his feet on the path to greatness)

Something Else Again (he's learned that things are never what they seem)

I Had the Love in My Eyes (he is sometimes blinded by the feelings he has for his current love)

You and Me (the ultimate buddy team up)

Just in Time (when it was the darkest he came through - just in the nick of time).

Name of his first story: The Devil's Eye!

All songs from the same artist and album - it's a good album from a great artist.

all from Nine Inch Nails, all from One album: Year Zero

High Concept: "The Good Soldier" ill fight this war, just as they trained me to do...
Trouble: "Me i'm Not"  you cant really sell your soul... can you?
Where do you come from: "My Violent Heart" "There are bullet holes where my compassion used to be, and there is violence in my heart"
What shaped you: "The Warning" the council gave me one warning. and thats all i will give any one else.
What was your fist adventure: "The Greater Good" they tell me it is all for the greater good, but how can i kill them all?
Guest Staring: "Vessel" They say i am a vessel of hope, of power but really " I let you take me from within "
redux: "The Great Destroyer" "I Hope they cannot see. the limitless potential living inside of me, to murder everyone"

When i was growing up i liked to make things and like all kids i thought swords and kifes were cool. my father helped me make my first knife right after my tenth birthday, it was the sharpest knife my dad had ever seen or so he said. that knife would cut through near anything and it would every once in a while make a nice dent in trees when i wanted to show off.
One day while walking home from school me and a friend saw some guy trying to fix his bike down between two houses. we went over to help him out, he only needed to put his chain back on. when me and my friend got closer he pulled a gun on us, my friend tried to run. all i heard one one shot. the next thing i know the police are there and asking me if i am allright. i wouldn't let go of my friends body. they asked me later what happened to the man that shot my friend, they said his entire chest had been shoved in, like it had been crushed by a rock. all i could remember was stabbing him once in the chest.
A man in a grey cloak stopped by later that week, he asked to see my knife. when i gave it to him and told him how right it felt stabbing that man. he got really quite, like he didnt know what to say. he took me away that night, and i ended up meeting the council, turns out killing a man with a magic knife doesnt break the first law... but it comes really close.
i spent the next 10 years becoming a warden, apparently there was a war going on. all of the stuff they had me doing, i couldn't take it, i wasn't strong enough to be what they wanted. then i was offered some help. you cant really sell your soul ya know. its not real. but that man gave me an old nickel for it. that man said it was made from real silver. i dont know how or why but that coin helped, i was strong enough now, i could finally help out for the greater good.
My teachers said we were like vessels the first day they met us, empty and waiting to be filled. if only they knew what would fill me up. well its time to fight the war. i just hope they cannot see the limitless potential living inside of me to murder everyone.

I approve.  :)

I felt silly during my break time listening to OverClocked Remixes so here's a guy inspired by The Secret of Mana Soundtrack and again, the aspects just sounded cool.

HC: The Little Sprite

Trouble: Fear of The Heavens

Phase I(Where did you come from?):  Fond Memories

Phase II(What Shaped You?): Into The Thick of It

Phase III(Your First Adventure): Steel and Snare

Phase IV(Who's Path Have you Crossed?): The Dark Star

Phase V(Who Else's Path Have You Crossed?): The Second Truth From The Left

There are so many cool sounding tracks, I may just do more of them.

Thank you for your approval. I hate to ask you this again, but what kind of character do you have in mind for those aspects?

Anyway, if there's going to be a game using these characters we'll need a bit more variety. Operative A and Sir Oswell cover combat pretty well and odd jobs decently, but the group still needs a social expert and a magical practitioner. I think that stats for William Joel and Albia Tullius should solve that. Stormraven's character can pick up any odd jobs that Operative A missed.

I'll probably stat up William Joel and Albia Tullius sometime this week.

Thank you for your approval. I hate to ask you this again, but what kind of character do you have in mind for those aspects?

I'm not sure what kind of character I had in mind with this.

Here's an attempt at a cohesive story:

HC: The Little Sprite

The Little Sprite is....a Sprite, a faerie about the size of a 10-year old human child (my best estimate of the SoM Sprite's size) He's a type of Wyld Fae who's been given a degree of free will. He doesn't have a name currently, but he'd get one in the First Adventure collaboration phase if actually run.

Basically, the Sprite kid from Secret of Mana.

Trouble: Fear of The Heavens

It's not paranoia unless there are superpowerful things trying to kill you. "Heavens" in this case is more figurative. If the the Little Sprite lived in the underground or still does, the Heavens could mean the surface world.  Actually, I'm going to run with that.

Phase I(Where did you come from?):  Fond Memories

Ah.. the past. Life was good. Mum was nice to me. Dad taught me to be brave. THe surface was this unknown thing that was scary and wondrous simultaneously.

Phase II(What Shaped You?): Into The Thick of It

...Then the damn sewer was flushed out. I was forced out of my home, which is now lost. I am alone and in the middle of...everything. But, if I must fight, I must fight.

Phase III(Your First Adventure): Steel and Snare

The Sprite is particularly skilled at traps. Some of them are quite unorthodox, especially for faeries since his parents had the unpopular tradition of using the bane, hence the name of the aspect.

Phase IV(Who's Path Have you Crossed?): The Dark Star

Mum and Dad gave the Sprite on thing to hold onto and to promise never to let it fall into mortal hands, The Dark Star. It looks like a spherical piece of metal, but possesses powers beyond mortal control. Obviously an IoP of some kind and can be used to justify almost any collection of powers.

Phase V(Who Else's Path Have You Crossed?): The Second Truth From The Left

The Sprite can do sleight of hand and Silver Tongue stuff like it's going of style. And that's without his Glamours.

I shall follow this up with some Chrono Trigger.

Here's an attempt at a Hard-Core Spellcaster. Courtesy of Chrono Trigger. I decided to use none of the Time Travel related songs because that overlaps with Operative A:

HC: Jolly Ol' Spekkio

First you have to ask yourself, what kind of a character has his Name is his High Concept? My money is on Jolly Ol' Spekkio.

He has free will(otherwise he wouldn't be a PC), but he hasn't said whether he is human or not. What is known is that he is a Magister for Hire. He particualrly likes to teach burgeoning Wizards how to use magic....for a price.

Trouble: Mystery from the Past OR  The Hidden Truth

Spekkio's past is a mystery to everyone except him. Particuluarly where his magic comes from and how he got it. This problem keeps biting him in the ass.

Phase I(Where did you come from?): Rhythm of Earth, Wind, and Sky

Spekkio's magical talents relate to the elements in their most primal forms. Also reflected in his personality, which....goes with the flow.

Phase II(What Shaped You?): To My Dear Friends

Spekkio likes to be around his friends. In fact it was his friends that made him become a Mage for hire and a teacher.

Phase III(Your First Adventure): Huh!?

Spekkio has a knack for...awkward moments. Both being involved in them and causing them. Either way, someone is left going, "Huh!?"

Phase IV(Who's Path Have you Crossed?):Yearnings of the Wind  OR Strange Occurances

His primal control of the elements and his other magics has greater side effects than normal. This strange Mage seems to attract weird things.

Phase V(Who Else's Path Have You Crossed?):Battle

Spekkio is a Combat Mage. When battle is joined, there you find him...(Which would be a cool aspect name on its own. I'll have to save that one.)

Those characters look good, but I think I'll stick with William Joel and Albia Tullius as magical and social support. Spekkio seems like a submerged character, and I'm not sure how to stat a were-lion. The sprite also looks interesting, but I'm not sure how to stat him.

I would do the were-lion just like a werewolf, maybe increasing his speed and making sure his bite and claws would do more damage. He'd definitely have Pack Mentality, too.

Here's William Joel. With him, we have a fairly complete group of Chest Deep characters. You could run a game with them, although you'd need to find a city for them to play in and a reason for them to associate with one another.

Here you go, thought I would join in! All the same Album too, heh.

Robby the Reluctant Redcap

Template -  Changeling

High Concept -  Nowhere Man (A drifter with no home, and thus at home wherever he needs to be, blending in wherever.)

Trouble -  Michelle (picked up a baby left in a dumpster, raising her like his own. He has to protect her, and she also serves as his conscious, keeping his murderous side in check)

Where Did You Come From? - Norwegian Wood (His earliest memory is walking through a great old Scandinavian forest as a toddler, and feeling strangely at home. Ever since then he has always been more comfortable in a natural setting, and tends to hang out in large parks or quiet woods. He is an expert woodsman and trapper as well, excelling in the hunt)

What Shaped You? - You Won't See Me (Robby realized that with a little concentration, people just look right over him. He didn't realize he was using Glamours, but it certainly made it a lot easier to survive on the road or in the nasty parts of cities. He's gotten to the point where he is so used to being overlooked that he almost is surprised when someone pays attention to him.)

Your First Adventure - Run For Your Life (When a child predator kidnapped Michelle and drove off, Robby realized that no matter how far they went or how fast they ran, they couldn't escape him. Or the knife he suddenly felt so comfortable with. When he picks his prey, they are never going to get away from him.)

Who's Path have You Crossed? - Think For Yourself (When Robby found himself tempted by the power of Winter, it was only the steady, calming words of The Summer Knight, Fix, that convinced him that his destiny was his own to choose. He isn't ready to become a mortal, but his path is his own)

Who Else's Path Have You Crossed? - I'm Looking Through You (Robby lost a vicious bet, not knowing that he was being duped by a coyote spirit in human form. While working off his debt, he learned how to tell truth from lies. Now it takes a hell of a lot to fool him, but he has the unnerving tendency to ignore courtesy and simply respond to people's intentions, rather than what they said to him.)
